Why hand-written can become a trend? The first research project for our team work is Handwritten topic when the MA course began in the first day. There are six members in our team work and for my work, I focus on the research of website. Why hand-written can become a trend on the website? The reason is that the hand-written style is an effective method to present a brand or a person’s personality, so it is still popular in this generation. Jessie (2017) mentions that hand-written style gives people comfortable, friendly and approachable feeling and show the personal character as well, but problem is that it is sometimes difficult to read it. However, that is the feature of cursive typeface which is like decorative letters or block letters. Similarly, according to Fox (2018), hand-written style is popular and overwhelming in 2018. This aesthetic generation is focusing on simplifying, so it seems that hand-written style is not suitable for using. However, this writing is attractive to consumers which shows personality,
individuality and authentic expression. This way is appropriate for small handmade business or larger brands on individual expression. Furthermore, Giardiniere (2015) reports that there are two different categories of fonts. The fonts are scanned from printed fonts and imitate scripts or hand writing. the former is traditional carved letters or a scan from a printing press, but the latter is usually drawn by hand, then scanned. Wedding invite is suitable to choose a hand-drawn font or a script font. Making a big headline or typing up a paper is appropriate to typeset the graphs. However, because of digital age of fonts, designers experiment to combine the different fonts and blur the lines. To summarise, in spite of the fact that hand-written is traditional or old style, it is not old-fashioned in the digital age because the features of the typeface are personalised, identified, attractive, and classical.
An example of hand-written typography from "We Are Island" 5
Lyrics on YouTube films Some good example from youtube, there are many lyrics of song that uses hand-wrriten style to present on the videos. Thus, this form causes audience to feel more personalized features.
6
Wedding's font on the website Wedding is only once in most people's career. In order to create a profound memory, desiners use the hand-written style as well. When people see the website or images, this can deepen their feeling and be more classical moment.

Branding on the website Some good example from youtube, there are many lyrics of song that uses handwrriten style to present on the videos. Thus, this form causes audience to feel more personalized features. 8

The Log-O-Rithmic Slide Rule: A Retrospective 14 July – 7 October 2018
Introduction of exhibition The exhibition of Trix & Robert Haussmann is designed for architect and product designer. When I walked in the exhibition room, I saw there are many wooden products and building structure artefacts in this event. Thus, I think product designer and architect are the main audience. Another one is focused on the issue of globalisation and consumerism. I think it is successful on reaching the audience due to precise materials presenting on the artefacts. Furthermore, the visualization of brochure is quite effective because it shows two different patterns and each one can represent the main feature of the exhibition. However, I consider that the exhibition is too difficult for most people to realise the meaning of the background, so it may miss many audiences. I recommend it is better to introduce the main idea on this exhibition first when people visit the event. It is a useful way to assist people to understand the exhibition.

Trix & Robert Haussmann
Introduction of this artwork “Choco Chair” is an extremely creative and modernist artwork by the designer, Trix and Robert Haussmann, but the chair does not have any function. I think most people think how they can sit on the chair and may feel it is unsafe and dangerous. From this perspective, I guess that the purpose of Trix and Robert Haussmann is to create an unstable atmosphere not only a chair. According to Waterman (2018), “Choco Chair” look like as its name because it seems like chocolate material and melt on the floor. Although it does not have any function, as a visual object is beautiful. However, the aim of this creation is that the designers want to present their concept of critical Mannerism and against architecture’s firm classicism,
12
as described by Nottingham Contemporary (2018). The Designers attempt to give audiences a completely novel feeling through intense visualisation. Generally speaking, a common chair has four stable legs, whereas this chair’s legs look like a melted liquid. I can feel this chair has a temperature or the ground is extremely hot. Thus, the work can change how people regard a chair and break common impression of chair. I acquired that if I hope to create a unique object, I can choose different ways by colour, shape, material or people’s feelings to generate the ideas and broke the existing cognition. This is a successful tip to develop an outstanding artwork.
Introduction of this artwork The Log-O-Rithmic Slide Rule, this artwork is radial, symmetrical and aesthetical object. The installation art is a combination of wood and mirror which is a really conflicting artwork because the two materials are represented to different features or feelings, but designers choose them and put them together. There is a space of rectangle which is like a door. I guess that the meaning of the door is the concept of leading to a novel and innovative thought and the broken mirror is the symbol of a completely new and unconventional value. Therefore, the main purpose of this artwork is to reflect the functionalism and absurdity of the building in their generation as reported by Nottingham Contemporary (2018). In this work, I learned that it is an effective method to present a conflicting notion through the strong contract of material. However, it is quite dangerous way because there is a big possibility to create an unreasonable creation. In my opinion, I do not like the combination of wood and mirror.

PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP In printmaking workshop, I learned three different printing methods which are debossing, embossing and collagraph. I am familiar with debossing and embossing because I saw many designed artworks which are applied on the cards or package. Yet, I never know and hear collagraph before which is the first time that I know it in the class. After the introduction of this workshop, I keep researching three printing patterns.
Embossing
15
WHAT IS EMBOSSING AND DEBOSSING? Debossing and embossing are similar printing techniques. Both are used to imprint impressed or depressed images onto paper to increase their effect. According to Ingram (2017), embossing is when designers raise a logo or other patterns to create a 3D image. This raised design is produced by pushing a metal die into card stock, paper (or other chosen material) from the bottom. The raised area can have foil or ink applied to it for increased effect or it can be left unfoiled or unprinted (i.e. known as a blind emboss). Debossing is the opposite of embossing as users make an indent in the material. A metal die is stamped onto the front of the material causing depressions that leave a (debossed) imprint of the image on their card stock, paper (or other chosen material). People can choose to leave the debossing as it is (i.e. known as a blind deboss) or fill the indentation with ink. Both embossing and debossing can be used in combination with foil stamping and offset printing to impact on a design and add depth. Dies can be multilevel, sculptured, single-level or with bevelled edges to produce noticeable, diverse designs.
Debossing
PRACTICAL WORKING Before the practical workshop, I think debossing and embossing are complicated process, but it is not difficult for doing this. Firstly, we need to prepare some images and thick paper. Then, cut the image on the thick paper by laser machine. Bring all the cutting shapes of paper to the workshop. Secondly, prepare some rosaspina paper and cut an appropriate size for printing. In the workshop, put the rosaspina paper in the clean water around 10-15 minutes. Take away rosaspina paper from water and use dry paper to dry it. Thirdly, we can start printing the images. Put the cutting shapes of paper on the rosaspina paper and do heavy press on them through molding machine. Finally, we can get the perfect debossing and embossing cards. I love the effect on the card because it can lead our artwork to be more unique and outstanding.

WHAT IS COLLAGRAPH? Collagraph, the word is come from the Greek word koll or kola which the meaning is graph, glue and the activity of drawing. It is one of printmaking skills in which materials are applied to a rigid substrate, such as paperboard, cardboard, metal or paperboard. Collagraph plates can be cut into shapes, then, combined with different technologies like intaglio and masking. Different tonal, line qualities, textural effects, colour mixes and embossing can be achieved in this way (Mayoux, 2018). In the class, our lecturer introduced a master of collagraph who is Sara Amos. I am curious her artwork and I search it on the website. The following image is her works which is really amazing works. She used many different shapes or materials to print on the artwork. It is quite diverse shapes to combine in one picture. Also, I feel she picked some traditional or oriental elements in her works. For me, the two artworks have a similar feature. Both they have trait of warrior in the painting which look like Japanese style. Thus, I consider a combination of material which is interesting way for creating novel work. PRACTICAL WORKING Collagraph is quite similar to debossing and embossing due to both they have to prepare same things. The first and second step are same. The difference is we can add more shapes on the cutting paper. Also, we can use craft knife to cut any shapes. Then, the cutting paper need to vanish first and wait to dry several days before starting the workshop. Because I do not have the step, my artwork is not successful. The reason of vanishing is to make the printing look better. The third step is same debossing and embossing, putting the rosaspina paper in the clean water around 10-15 minutes and taking away rosaspina paper from water and use dry paper to dry it. Then, we start to mix the black pigment and a little bit oil together. After that, smear black pigment on the cutting paper by gauze. And use the other clean gauze to erase the extra pigment. Finally, Put the cutting shapes of paper on the rosaspina paper and do heavy press on them through molding machine. Then, we can finish collagraph work. Because I do not vanish in my work, my artwork is not successful. Thus, my image is totally black and not clear to see the picture on the card.

RISOGRAPH WORKSHOP Hassell (2018) describes that the main feature of risogrph printing is that the printing work is unpredicted in the final outcome. This printing can bring surprising to designer. Additionally, it is suitable for small amount of printing because mass amount of printing mostly requires a regular standard on the printing result. Thus, risogrph printing is appropriate unique creation. The other feature is when we start printing, the printing machine only can print one colour at a time. If the printing image has four colours, people need to print the same paper for four times. The acting is the main reason why people cannot control each picture to be printed on the precise place. However, the unperfected mistake causes the perfected method of creation. When our lecturer helps us to print the pictures, I can find each paper which has slight difference on it.

IDEATION WORKSHOP In ideation workshop, I think the most important thing is to learn how to think creatively. The most interesting part is practically doing somethings.
A
B
22
In the first part of the work, six students in a group, Trevor sends a piece of paper. This paper is folded into six equal parts and the goal is to draw an interesting character on this piece of paper. We are able to feel free to draw this paper. The limited thing is that each of six students can only draw part of it. For instance, one of classmates draws a head, another one draws the main body, another one draws the thighs, the other one draws the foots, but each classmate cannot see the other students has drawn. The paper must be covered and cannot be seen by the next classmate. This is like a relay race and we have to complete the character together. We can open the paper and see what the character looks like until the final person finish to his/her painting. I think this is a very fun way to create a new character because we cannot expect it, but this situation will always bring surprise to people. I think this method that is really helpful for everyone to inspire our creativity so that our work can be different and unique.
In the second practical work, it is very similar to the first phase of the implementation. Each group of students will get a piece of paper with a word. This paper needs to be folded into several equal parts. Everyone can watch one word written by the previous person and associate a new word then write it on and pass to the next person until final person finish to write a word. Then we can open this paper to see all words. I think this little game is very suitable for the creative story because these words can form a meaningful and unique story. In the third stage of the practical work, each group will get a sentence and use this sentence to start thinking about any idea.
We got the sentence is “Revolving Door Repairer”. Then, we used “mind map” to put any ideas on the big paper and recombined into a new concept of brand and company from our brainstorming. We used this concept to think about packaging design and logo recognition. I felt very interesting in the process because it was a very special way to create a brand and packaging. I think I can use these methods to make creative ideas in future projects. wThe creative ideas of these three parts are very meaningful. In the future Project, I think I can use these different ways to create the design. These methods can bring my work more special or crazy.
23
THE SEMANTICS OF DESIGN WORKSHOP
SEMANTICS
24
In this session, the learning point is to focuses on what is semantics. Although I do not learn graphic semantics before the class, I think this workshop has a very strong connection with the product semantics of my university study. From my previous study, we need to consider and analyse the appearance and shape of a product because the shape of the product will affect how people use a product. Thus, a good product design shape is quite important. The shape will convey the semantics to the audience. I think there is the same concept between semantics of product design and graphic design. All the graphic or shaped symbols in life have their meaning in order to convey the exact information to people.
these patterns on the paper. Our goal is to redesign a packaging for this drink and this appearance of the packaging need to match three adjectives. At the end, we chose the shape of the infinity as the appearance of the bottle because we think it is in line with dynamic, sparkling and fruity.
In this practical work, six students are being a group. Chris sent a bottle of drink to each group. We cannot realise what the drink inside the bottle because this is a bottle of transparent drink, like Sparkling water. We need to drink directly to know the taste and feeling of this bottle of drink. Afterwards, we discuss with my group members to write down some adjectives. The purpose is to describe what the feeling of this bottle of drink is, so in many adjectives, our group selected three words that we think are the most representative. The three features of this drink are dynamic, sparkling and fruity. Then, we began to think about what kind of pattern can express these three adjectives and draw
THE FINAL OUTCOME
I think the quite interesting part of this lesson is to directly feel the taste of the drink. For this taste, we can design a new packaging through the abstract adjective into a concrete appearance. This practice teaches me how to use the semantics of design to innovate our works. I can experience a real feeling to convey and present the idea to audience.
25
ROLLER DESIGN THINKING WORKSHOP
UI X UX 26
In this workshop, the main focus is to learn user interface & user experience. The interface design is not strange to me because there are two semesters of interface design courses in my bachelor degree. The first semester is to learn how to design application, visual interface and operating procedures. The second semester is advanced user interface design. In this session, we need to create a smart device as a product which can be connected with a mobile application or user interfaces are available on the product. Although I have studied some of the interface design, this workshop allows me to compare the teaching methods of Taiwanese and British designers. I think this workshop is also a great experience for me to observe what the differences are. What taught us in this class is an interface designer, Ryan. He taught us to set our design goals with 5W before we start designing the app. The first point is who, who is going to use this app? The second point is what, what kind of problem am I trying to solve? The third point is where, where is the app used? The Fourth is when, when do the audiences use the app? Final one is why, why do the audiences need to use this app? After we have defined all the issues clearly, we can create our ideas and find some solutions through focusing these questions.
It's very interesting in the practical work. Ryan gave a piece of paper to everyone and there are 32 circles on it. We have to think about any interesting patterns in five minutes. The purpose of the work is to let all participants for a warm-up. Afterwards, we enter the actual app design and design thinking. There are five students to be a group. Our topic is to design an e-learning app and help children learn effectively. Thus, we need to use 5W method to set the goal. Our audiences are children between 5 and 12 years old, parents and school teachers. The core issue is to make children more interesting to read books through an e-learning app and to help them remember the knowledge from books more effectively. Then, we set up at home, school classrooms or educational workshops. We believe that the most appropriate time to use the app is the period of the parent-child and the school’s study. Why do you want to create this app? In terms of parents, we believe that the app can reduce their pressure on education. In terms of children, e-learing can make them happier to learn and read. In terms of teachers, electronic products can become teachers' teaching tools and they are more convenient to teach children. In terms of the earth, It is also more eco-friendly to the environment. In the next section, we need to set up a detailed persona, for example, set the age of a child, personality, hobbies, motivations, goals, quote...etc. The purpose is to empathise the role who faces the difficulty. We need to set up three characters who are children, parents and teachers. Next step, we began to think about the appearance of the app interface. We can imagine what features and functions are needed and draw these ideas. Although we did not really complete the app design, I learned a lot of useful design methods in the process. For example, I need to empathise a person’s feeling to consider the problem. Furthermore, I have to define the problem first, then solve the problem. After I have drawn the idea, I need to test these concepts. Also, I found the method is quite similar to product design. Thus, this class helps me to review product design and interface design again, but the important thing is to innovate an app.
27
BRIEF PROJECT 1.
Extra Ordinary
I chose “Extra Ordinary” as first brief project. The topic is quite abstract to me because I cannot really realise the meaning of background. When I researched something on the website, I found an interesting video. The creator recorded some boring thing. For example, the falling leaf, the moving water…etc. He collected many simple records and add the different emoji on the object. Everything becomes lively and more interesting, so the boring records became quite funny and vivid. I feel the animation is really outstanding. Thus, I got the inspiration from this film. I think I understand what “Extra Ordinary” is. The definition of “Extra Ordinary” for me is to find the most boring thing in the life and attempt to make the boring thing to be more interesting or special. Therefore, I started observing many trivial things in my life due to developing every simple or boring thing.
28
The topic of Bubble I used the mind map to consider what thing I did in the life. Then, I picked six boring things. There are flipping book, moving bubble, photography, swiping smartphone, changing cloud and shadow. Finally, I decided to develop the moving bubble because bubble is quite relaxing to me. I hope to deliver the relaxing feel and make an attracting video to everyone. I was observing different bubble, for instance, beer and soda. The bubble is moving from the bottom to the top and from emerging to vanishing. The process is quite fun, so I was thinking how I can make the process become some differences.
29
The creative creature I think I can create a story in the bubble world, so the story may have a character. Sarah has one session which is taught how to create a character. I drew a quite strange cat and I used the creation to add in my brief project. I have a hand-drawing sketch first and I use illustrator to re-draw in the laptop. The next step, I thought the story needs to include bubble and cat. I imagine the cat is swimming in the bubble and really enjoying in the life. Thus, I start recording different videos to experiment which outcome is better. At last, I choose a glass and put soda in the glass. In order to see the clear bubble in the film, I put a flashlight under the glass bottom. Because the bubble was becoming more beautiful, I decided to use the record.
30
The medium what I found Yet, I did not put my character in the video, so I have to choose a special method to present the interesting video. I found an attractive skill which is flip-book machine on the website. The structure of machine has a combination of many images and when someone is flipping the structure, it can show a small animation. I think I can hand-make the creative machine by myself, so I research and start doing the device. It is really difficult than I imagine it, so the process is quite tired. Finally, I finished my artwork.
The final outcome
31
Reflection of this work Although I spent so much time finishing my work, I am not really satisfied with the final outcome. The main reason is when the flip-book machine is rotated, it does not show an obvious animation. I reflected the reason of the problem is that the character in the image is not big enough and the background of the image is too dark and unclear. In addition, I do not use a high-quality printer to print out, and I guess it is better to use thicker paper to print it because it can show a clearly dynamic screen when I rotated the device. If I have a chance to do again, I will avoid these problems to create a better one. After this assessment, I use limited time to create a small video in order to see the successful animation and I am satisfied with this time. Therefore, I also improve the character because I hope to draw a cuter than previous one.

BRIEF PROJECT 2.
Mind the gap
In brief project 2, I chose the topic “mind the gap”. In Sarah’s lecture, she introduced the topic. I got an interesting concept from the image from Matilda by Quentin Blake (1988). I got an inspiration from the image. The illustrator’s picture is that a character is flying from the window, but the image stops at the moment. The method is to cause audiences’ curiosity. Thus, People will hope to know what the story happens next step, so they read the next pages. This tip can also bring the surprising feeling or unexpected result for audience. I chose the concept to develop my idea because I think it is a playful means to use in designing something.
Image from Matilda by Quentin Blake (1988).
SURPRISE
Thus, I got the main idea which is related to folded concept for me. I started researching some artworks and I found out some similar idea. There are some designed cards which have folded concept. When someone opens the card and look the other page, the person can notice that there is different image and message on the card.
34
A l l t h e s e wo r ks a re q u i te attracting to my attention. From these works, I found different folded variety. The most interesting idea for me is 3D book by using folding method. I quite like the 3D book concept, but I found many people use the way to design some images. Thus, I do not choose it to apply in my outcome and make a 3D book which needs to spend much time to do it. 3D book
2D card 35
In the further research, I find Jacob's Ladder is a really unique structure to show the surprise. Because this toy is flipped, Jacob's Ladder can present different images. Thus, I decide to use it to create my outcome. I start learning how to make a Jacob's Ladder, but it's really difficult structure. Because when I attempt to make it out, I make mistakes so many times. The structure is quite confusing me.
The wrong model / testing many times
36
A poor skull-man story
The other challenge for me is to consider a story. Although I found an interesting method to present the picture, I need to think an interesting story. Because Jacob's Ladder is combined with different images to become a story, the whole picture is quite long. Thus, the first idea in mind is bungee jumping. I decided to choose the topic to develop my images. The first researching picture is a crocodile want to eat a man, I feel the story is better than only bungee jumping, but I would like to change the character because I do not think to use the same character to re-drew again. Therefore, I consider a skull-man’s story and I create the different roles in the story.
37
The different characters in the story
38
The outcome story The final outcome in Jacob's Ladder which is showing two story in two sides. The first side story is a skull-man flying with a kite-man, but a monster cuts the line. The second side story is connecting with the first side, so the broken line makes the other skull-man drops on the floor and become a delicious food for the skull-dog. I use the Jacob's Ladder to connect the two side story and make a surprising result for audience when they play Jacob's Ladder.
Reflection of this work The most important part for me is to make Jacob's Ladder which is quite complicated and take much time. The other point is to learn to create character and describe a story. The part of me is the first time experience to do it. I feel I can do it better next time. Finally, I consider Jacob's Ladder is a really mysterious structure and it can be applied in many position, for example, graphic design, product design, interior design‌etc. I think I still can use the structure to create something in future.

When I make the final outcome, I am keeping making mistkes in the process.

CASE STUDY 1.
Taiwanese graphic designer: Aaron Nieh
Introduction Aaron Nieh who is one of the most famous graphic designers in Taiwan. He has experienced various design contests and got many awards in his design career. Furthermore, he is good at making packaging design on books and albums. Many famous singers in Taiwan have collaborated with him before for creating their albums. I intend to research him as one of my case studies the reason is that he has done many successful graphic design projects that is very valuable for me to learn how to carry out a project. Thus, it is quite important for me because I consider I probably make a package design in my MA project.
42
Album design: Senses Around
This project is one the most outstanding works in Aaron’s career. This packaging is designed for the Music Album "Senses Around" of singer Yoga Lin, published by HIM Music Co., Ltd. Taiwan. This album utilises two different pictures (quiet listening / violent sound) to present the contrast between perception of sensory organs and environment noise. Connecting them becomes a meaningful piece of communication, responding to the idea of this album, as reflected in its
name. The album is also provided with a new packaging concept unusual cover size and lyrics pages presented as posters, to make the subject stand out when being displayed in record stores and while unpacking at home just before listening to the music. I find the concept of the project that uses the senses to create the album. This makes me consider I can use the method of sensory design to develop my MA project.
43
4 EMOTIONS' EYE
44
According to Aaron's team, this exhibition poster series describe four emotions that humans feel: joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure. The idea is that “Eyes are the universe” is explained by the “waves of the universe” and aims to present that feelings are “subtle exists” and that humans are just small inside of them. Due to magnify these feelings and emphasis their overwhelming potential, phosphorescent pigments were used in the poster background, which bring a soft and pleasant feeling in a dark environment. Aiming to present
these feelings visually, square patterns and an array of fine line are distorted from different angles and deformed into various directions to form multifaceted amorphous shapes. Each pattern hides the shadow of a human being who seems to lead to these waves and whose size, in relation to the poster, vivid depicts the effect that the thus portrayed fe e l i n g s h ave . T h i s v i b ra n c y becomes even more obvious in the dark when the poster, thanks to the special coating, starts to glow. Statement by the jury, the design of this poster series depends
exclusively on lines that get thicker or thinner as a visual means to explain emotions. The realisation itself is highly interesting and positively captures the attention of audiences. That the posters start to glow as soon as it gets dark further enhances their charming effect, turning these highly descriptive patterns into interesting eyecatchers. wFrom this project, I can think about different materials to express various emotions because correctly presenting emotion is significant in my MA project.

CASE STUDY 2.
Highly Sensitive Person
Dr. Elaine Aron summarise the core trait of HSPs by acronym “DOES”. “D” stands for “depth of processing”: Phenomenal ability to deeply analyse absolutely everything. “O” stands for “overstimulation”: Get quickly overwhelmed by the world around us. “E” stands for “Empathy”: HSPs feel what others feel. “S” stands for “awareness of subtleties”: HSPs are like a finely turned senor and they can pick up on the minutest things.
What is the meaning and trait of highly sensitive people (HSPs)? The term of highly sensitive people is from psychologically specific word. The psychologist, Elaine Aron, is the first person to research HSPs issues. Aron (1992) reports that high sensitivity is a normal trait and there are 15-20% of the Psychologist: Elaine Aron population who are HSPs in the world. Additionally, biologists have found it in over 100 species. The trait is a kind of survival strategy, being observant before acting. HSPs are more aware than others of subtleties. This is mainly because their brain processes information and reflects on it more deeply. They are also more easily overwhelmed. If they notice everything, they are naturally going to be overstimulated when things are too intense, complex, chaotic, or novel for a long time. This trait is not a new discovery, but it has been misunderstood. HSPs prefer to look before entering new situations, they are often called “shy.” But shyness is learned, not innate. In fact, 30% of HSPs are extroverts, although the trait is often mislabelled as introversion. Moreover, it has also been called
inhibitedness, fearfulness, or neuroticism. Some HSPs behave in these ways, but it is not innate to do so and not the basic trait. Finally, sensitivity is valued differently in different cultures. In cultures where it is not valued, HSPs tend to have low self-esteem. They are told “don’t be so sensitive” so that they feel abnormal. What are positive and negative points of HSPs? According to Ni (2017), there are many positive aspects of being a sensitive person (such as greater ability to listen and affirm, greater empathy and intuitiveness, better understanding of others' wants and needs, etc.). However, they often have negative feeling or emotion Psychologist: Preston Ni because it could be many reasons from their life. For instance, they may often consider and analyse many trivial things or people’s behaviours and responses. These will cause HSPs to have a panic daily life, so it may bring mental issue to them. Therefore, this mental problem can affect their health and HSPs also have many difficulties in the life.
47
24 Signs of a Highly Sensitive Person - Research by Preston Ni Category One: Sensitivity About Oneself 1. Often has difficulty letting go of negative thoughts and emotions. 2. Frequently feels physical symptoms (i.e. stress or headache) when something unpleasant happens during the day. 3. Often has bad days that affect eating and/or sleeping habits in an unhealthy way, such as eating or sleeping too much or too little. 4. Often experiences tension or anxiety. 5. Tends to “beat oneself up” when falling short of own expectations. 6. Is afraid of rejection, even in relatively minor situations. 7. Compares self with others often (in physical, relational, social, work, financial, or other scenarios), and experiences unhappy feelings from negative social comparison. 8. Often feels anger or resentment about situations in life or in society which seem unjust, aggravating, or simply annoying. Category Two: Sensitivity About Others 9. Often thinks/worries about what others are thinking. 10. Tends to take things personally. 11. Finds it difficult, when triggered by relatively small unpleasantness with people, to just “let it go”. 12. Feels hurt easily. 13. Often hides negative feelings, believing they are too strong, turbulent, embarrassing or vulnerable to share; keeps a lot of negative emotions inside. 14. Alternatively, often discusses negative emotions with others because there’s a lot of “drama” in one’s life. 15. Has a hard time accepting critical feedback, even when it's given reasonably and constructively. 16. Often feels like people are judgmental, even when there’s no strong evidence. 17. Often overreacts to real or perceived slights and provocations. 18. Often feels awkward in group situations and feels unable to be oneself. 19. Feels self-conscious in romantically intimate situations; excessively worries about partner’s approval; is unreasonably afraid of being judged or rejected by partner. Category Three: Sensitivity About One’s Environment 20. Feels uncomfortable in large public crowds, in a room full of people talking, or when too many things are occurring simultaneously. 21. Feels uncomfortable when exposed to bright lights, loud sounds, or certain strong scents. 22. Startles easily at sudden noises, fast traffic, or other unpleasant surprises. 23. Often feels upset when watching or reading negative news in the media. Dislikes “shock” entertainment. (i.e. intensely scary or violent shows) 24. Often feels unhappy when following people’s posts on social media.
48
How does HSP overcome the mental problem? 1. Accept you don’t need fixing. 2. Embrace your nature. 3. Don’t force yourself to fit in. 4. Seek out positive experiences. 5. Use your nature to see all the details. 6. Don’t let yourself become overwhelmed. 7. Be comwpassionate towards yourself. 8. Take time for yourself.
Researching some video is about mental issue of HSP I use the keyword of Highly Sensitive People to research some videos on websites. I found HSP issue is quite popular now because there are many youtubers via recording video and summarise HSP topic. Then, giving some suggesting for audience. Also, there is an expert who is talking the subject on the TED talk. Significantly, I found there are two youtubers presenting the video through illustration by English and Chinese language which is important for me. I may use the referance to think future idea which could create a character or figure to show a real situation and how to solve the mental issue.

CASE STUDY 3.
ALESSI: Italian Design
As I mention in case study of HSP, I intend to develop HSP issue, so I start exploring some happiness-commodities because I hope to use a product to present in my final outcome. Then, I found ALESSI product seem to have this feature. Thus, the reason of this case study is to research the design concept of ALESSI brand.
“A true design work must move people, convey emotions, bring back memories, surprise, and go against common thinking. - Alberto Alessi
51
ALESSI MISSION Founded in 1921 as a “Workshop for the processing of brass and nickel silver sheet metal, with foundry”, Alessi has always stood out for the high quality of its products. In almost a century of history, the company has gradually evolved to become one of the leading “Factories of Italian design”, capable of applying its expertise and excellence in design management to many different product types. Open to change and international development, Alessi at the same time has a strong bond with the traditions and cultural background of its area and continues to be synonymous with handcrafted objects produced with the help of machines. Alessi’s mission is now one of translating its quest for the most advanced cultural, aesthetic, design and functional quality into mass production. Designer products are the result of the constant reconciliation of art and industry, of the “Immensity of Creative Potential” and the needs of the market. The company is committed to a design approach in which the most advanced expression of international creativity is always balanced against the desires of the general public. Alessi has been described as a “Dream Factory”, which uses its products to make people’s dreams come true, providing them with the Art and Poetry that they seek.
ALESSI Juicy Salif Citrus Squeezer
IS IT A SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT? Lemon squeezer is the most classical product which is designed by Starck. The product is quite famous because of its outstanding appearance, but many people express the function of the product is not effective on squeezing lemon. Thus, the squeezer is located in a strange direction. Most People buy the cool tool is not for using it. People prefer to collect it as an artwork. Therefore, Starck seems to create a successful and unsuccessful product because in terms of conveying the emotion, he’s work is attracting to audience’s mind. I think it is very significant point for me to utilise the same method for innovating a product. The important thing is not focusing on product’s function, but using the way to attract people to notice the issue of Highly Sensitive Person.
Philippe Starck is rumoured to have said: "It's not meant to squeeze lemons, it is meant to start conversations."
52
OTHER ALESSI PRODUCTS Additionally, I find more various ALESSI products and interestingly, they have the similar style. Although each gadget has different function and appearance, all of them look like a colourful and attracting toy. I consider that is ALESSI’s identification and ALESSI is really good at interacting with audience via semantic shape. When people use their products, they can feel these tools are vivid and convey emotion for audience. Kitchenware research 53

ALZHEIMER’S PROJECT
55
I want to introduce a mental issue about Alzheimer’s disease. I think most people may not be familiar this issue, but I guess people seldom see a successful design for presenting physical disease. I found this project on the website which is designed by “Studio Dumbar.” They are a design group in Netherlands. I really love this poster design because I can quickly realise the key of the design point. The poster’s font is not complete and obvious. The artwork is like to show the feature of Alzheimer’s disease which is patients’ memory is disappearing little by little. Thus, I consider that the image is successfully visual communication to the society and the designers achieve their goal. From this project, it is really inspiring me a lot although the topic is not direct to link the highly sensitive person because two issues are quite different features. However, I can keep this design method to apply in HSP topic. This designed idea is I should find what the main trait of HSP is, then using the main finding to develop my project. I also need to think what thing shows on the final outcome that can connect with HSP trait and people can quickly understand the idea at first glance. This will be very important concept. If I keep the idea, the final outcome would be presented successful and I can achieve to convey the information for people. VISUAL REFERENCE Studio Dumbar, n.d. Alzheimer Nederland [online]. The Books of Highly Sensitive Person
57
SENSITIVITY IS A KIND OF TALENT This book brings me a lot of inspiration not just for this MA project. I have re-recognized from me who person I am and I think I am also a HSP. In this book, it accurately analyses the core HSP. There are many contents in book that directly point out my traits. This is so touching my heart and unbelievable because I have never been so clearly aware myself before. Furthermore, there is a sentence in this book that impresses me deeply.
“People often label themselves in a particular type. Only get rid of this rule and have the opportunity to thrive. Start from self-awareness, self-acceptance, then self-growth.
Because of this sentence, I get greatly confident and moving. I do not need to be what anyone expects. All I need to do is to keep original trait and be confident. When I reflect this issue, I think the biggest problems of HSP are stronger sensitivity than most people, lack of self-confidence and concerned about others how to regard them. As long as I can overcome these mental obstacles, I believe that HSPs can be better than before. I have summarised the most important points of whole the book which includes some inspirational sentences, the traits of HSP, mental problems, applying sensitive feature and overcoming bad situation when they overstimulating.
58
INSPIRING SENTENCES • • • • • • • •
Accept your unique sensitivity, be confident, be yourself “People often label themselves in a particular type. Only get rid of this rule and have the opportunity to thrive.” Start from self-awareness, self-acceptance, then self-growth. When you feel nervous and anxious, you should slow down your tempo. Like own original characteristic. Love and protect yourself. Empathising yourself is as same as loving yourself. Improve the ability of narcissism. The sensitivity is equal to the norm.
TRAITS OF HSP • • • • • • • • • • •
HSPs are similar characteristic and tendency, but actually they have different personality. HSPs are often affected by positive and negative emotion. HSPs like to explore personal inner world. When bad situation happens to HSPs, they often notice trivial problems. HSPs can identify subtle difference of sound and smell. HSPs think slowly and deeply, but diversely, so many HSPs are writers, artists, thinkers. They spend much time on organising ideation, so they have unique thought and special act. HSPs have high empathy to another one. Most HSPs are honest and responsible. HSPs have rich imagination in life. HSPs cannot identify by appearance. HSPs are 70% of introvert and 30% of extrovert.
HSPS MENTAL PROBLEMS • • • •
Set a high standard in order for ideal self-image. (Reason: low self-esteem, Denying self-value) Quote: I am a troublemaker. Quote: If I don’t work hard in a group, anyone mightn’t like me. (Tip: Break the high standard, don’t be perfect.) HSPs often suffer feeling of guilt.
59
KEEP SENSITIVE STIMULATION IN LIFE • • • • • • • • •
Close nature. (join natural activity) Keep creativity. Do nothing, spend time on thinking. Do something to be healthy for body. (exercise, take a shower) Stimulate your sense. (eat delicious food, listen to music, keep something you really love it) Play with pet. Write diary to record mood. View gallery or create artworks. Most HSPs like water, include drinking, taking shower, soaking feet, swimming
OTHER USEFUL TIPS FOR OVERWHELMING SITUATION 1. • • • •
Inspired events Read books. See theatre performance. Listen to radio. Go to concerts.
2. • •
Exogenous energy events Get along with close friends. Paly with Children.
3. When you stimulate too much, you can do these events • Yoga. • Some Light exercises. • Go jogging, water sports, heavy training or flywheel. • Dance. • Swing with music. • Take a bath or soak feet. • Massage your face, hands, body with music that is much better. 4. • • • • • 60
Close to nature Go hiking. Go picnicking in the nature. Meditate in the nature. Do some events in the nature. Hear the raining sound when rainwater drops on the umbrella.
5. Create works • Flower arrangement. • Pinch ceramic art. • Sculpture. • Draw. 6. Perform • Play musical instruments. • Writing articles, poems, diaries. 7. • • • • • •
Please yourself by experiencing 5 senses Smell flower and essential oil. Cook delicious food and enjoy yourself. Appreciate art and exhibition. Listen to music. Clean and decorate your room. Stroll on the warm sand or soil without wearing shoes.
8. Calm down events • Meditate. • Practice mindfulness and do yoga. • Stretch exercises. • Empathy yourself. • Enjoy thinking and fantasy. 9. • • • • •
Enjoy getting along with animals Play with cat. Touch the animal. Go to aquarium. Feed birds. Walk the dog.
In addition, I have gained important inspiration in this book. Most HSPs like water activities, so I think water vision and image is quite suitable for applying in my final outcome. This implication is to imply HSP they use can be more relaxing through touching water. Or the concept of water can be developed on different water-related products to show my outcome. All in all, water is a very interesting concept to develop any possibilities.

THE HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON HOW TO THRIVE WHEN THE WORLD OVERWHELMS YOU This book is Aron's original creation of HSP book. There are many authors who translate and quote the contents from the book. This book not only introduces the personality of HSP and teaches people how to treat HSPs. For example, how teachers teach HSP students, how the employers lead the HSP employees, even how HSPs are able to be a good parent. This book covers the different interpersonal issues and solutions. Thus, it is a very useful and applied book. I also recorded the key points mentioned by Aron from the book.
YOUR TRAIT REALTY DOES MAKE YOU SPECIAL • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
62
Better at spotting errors and avoiding making errors. Highly conscientious. Able to concentrate deeply. (But we do best without distractions.) Especially good at tasks requiring vigilance, accuracy, speed, and the detection of minor differences. Able to process material to deeper levels of what psychologists call “semantic memory.” Often thinking about our own thinking. Able to learn without being aware we have learned. Deeply affected by other people’s moods and emotions. Specialists in fine motor movement. Good at holding still. “Morning people.” (Here there are many exceptions.) More affected by stimulants like caffeine unless we are very used to them. More “right-brained” (Less linear, more creative in a synthesising way.) More sensitive to things in the air. (Yes, that means more bay fever and skin rashes.)
STRATEGIES FOR OVER-AROUSAL • • • • •
Reframe the situation. Repeat a phrase, prayer, or mantra that, through daily practice, you have come to associate with deep inner calm. Witness your over-arousal. Love the situation. Love your over-arousal.
SOME PURELY PHYSICAL STRATEGIES • Get out of the situation. • Close your eyes to shut out some of the stimulation • Take frequent breaks. • Go out-of-doors. • Use water to take the stress away. • Take a walk • Calm your breathing. • Adjust your posture to be more relaxed and confident. • Move! • Smile softly.

RELIEF LABORATORY
For many office workers, it is necessary to have a cup of coffee or tea at a drowsy moment; but besides these high-concentration caffeine sugary drinks, are there other new options? "Relief Lab" this project is a traditional Chinese medicine tea specially designed for office workers. The design group research traditional Chinese medicine in order to find the right medicine to supply office workers energy. Finally, they choose five traditional Chinese medicines to make a packaging design. They use the role of illustration to represent office workers’ mood and feeling. The white and black character is their depressing feeling. The colourful character represents for their happy feeling after people drink the traditional Chinese medicines and get energy. This project’s purpose also tries to change people’s traditional idea about cognition because traditional Chinese medicines are bitter. However, it is really healthy and support human’s energy.
64
I think the project it is quite similar my project. The project is also related to stress issue, but their audience is office workers. I feel the project is quite interesting. I get some inspiration from project. White and black represent for depress and colourful image represent for happiness. It is a useful tip to express two different situations. I think I may use in HSP project.

CHRISTMAS SURVIVAL KIT This work is made by “suck UK products” company. The company is a gift-company which creates different interesting gift. This work is designed for retailers and used in Christmas month. Christmas can be a stressful time if you work in retail, so the company will send a little package of TLC to some of our retailers going into the busy month of December. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday approaching, the company sent out personalised Christmas Survival Kits for getting through the peak season. Each kit included some festive essentials and Christmas comforts, all snugly packaged within a box reminiscent of a medical first aid kit. I quite like the concept “first aid kit”. Maybe it is suitable for applying in HSP project. On the other side, I also like the kit packaging which looks really like Christmas style and the visualisation conveys correct information. I think a packaging kit will be my importantly final outcome because I think I will put some small products inside the kit to for people using the stuffs. The packaging way is a fantastic reference for my future direction.

PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEW WITH NTU PSYCHOLOGY LECTURERS Although I have got a lot of inspiration in HSP book, I hope to know the further detailed information of the book. Thus, I contacted NTU's psychology lecturers and prepared nine questions to interview them.
The following content is my questions: 1. Do you think you are a Highly sensitive person? Why are you or why are you not? 2. How can people confirm they are HSPs? Because most tests in book or website only write that the marks only express you may be a HSP. 3. Many psychological books mention 100 HSPs may have 100 different features. But, what is common feature or trait for all HSPs? 4. Can High sensitivity be caused by nurture not nature? E.g. family factor or environmental factor? 5. What is the best solution do you think for HSPs to manage their mental issue? (e.g. when they suffer high stress, be in anxious feeling) 6. Can you use one sentence to encourage all HSPs? (suggestion, quotation‌) 7. Do you think I should focus on introducing the issue or teach HSPs to manage the mental health? Or are both parts important? (or guide them to read HSPs book) 8. Could you share with me? Any suggestions, inspirations, ideas or thoughts about this project. Or any experience before you help any HSPs. 9. Do you think glass (fragile heart) and water which are suitable to represent this topic?
68
?
Thank for Nottingham Trent University psychologists, Nadja Heym and Christine Norman to accept the interview to assist this project. The first interviewee is Nadja Heym. When I finished to explain my topic, she told me it was not very clear to her about the definition of Highly sensitive person because there are many factors that could affect people to become sensitive in her view. Sensitivity can be divided into mental and physiological. Therefore, she thinks that the definition of HSP is quite general to her and I do not focus on a specific study of a sensitive trait. In addition, she thinks that some information what I have studied may need to be considered again because she finds part of the content is not correct. For example, she does not agree that 30% of HSPs are extroverts and 70% are introverts. She mentioned that a person who cannot be directly judged as an extrovert or an introvert. Personality is a range, so a person can only be judged that he or she tends to be extroverted or introverted. She drew a diagram and explained that most people are somewhere in between. The second point, she believes that being an HSP is not an extroverted trait because they prefer to stay in the inner world and usually do not like party or socialising. Therefore, it is a very big blow for me. I was confused whether the issue can keep developing or not. However, I also get some tips from her how HSPs face overstimulating situation. She said mindfulness, self-compassion, meditation or relaxation are good solutions for HSPs. Furthermore, she suggests HSPs that “keep and stay calm campaign.”
?
The second interviewee is Christine Norman. In this interview, after I introduced my research of HSP, she considered Aron’s definition of HSP is included many contents about sensitive trait. In addition, I also asked the other questions. Due to reference, I found that the high sensitivity is related to genetic factor, but I wonder if it is possible that the highly sensitive is connected with environmental or family factors. Christine considered it is possible because parents' sensitivity or anxiety traits may be indirectly influence children. Especially, young children get along with parents much time. About how to overcome sensitivity or overstimulation, she thought recognising myself and self-reflection are quite significant. Then, find out the problems and try to solve it. Additionally, she also agreed my idea that the glass is suitable for representing the HSP's fragile heart and the water idea is as well because she considered water can relieve stress is very interesting concept which is also a good presenting method for this topic. Finally, she gave a sentence for HSPs as encouragement that is “it’s ok to be sensitive. Just accept it.” To summarise all the interview, I re-thought my topic and discussed with Chris. I think I can focus on mindfulness in this topic. My audience may not be a HSP, but I believe everyone has own part of sensitivity. Therefore, I hope to use mindfulness to guide all people how to regard sensitivity as a positive cognition instead of considering that is a flaw.

THE MAIN FINDING IN THE SURVEY Through the questionnaire survey, I attempt to find out how most people consider HSP issue and their interests. I hope to use these findings to develop my project. There are 47 people who participate in my survey. Surprisingly, I found most people do not think HSP is not a mental illness. In addition, my question, how sensitive you are? Most people’s answer is located in 60%-80% that mean is many people feel sensitive in the life. Thus, the other question about would you like to read psychological information about HSP? Many people answered yes
because of curious the issue. I feel my topic is quite successful because I have already caught people’s attention. Furthermore, my main regard is about how people deal with pressure and anxiety. There are four tips from this survey which are listening to music, eating delicious food, watching movies or funny videos and sleeping. I consider I can use the four things to develop some products which can help my audience to relieve the pressure. The other interesting question is about which sensory stimulation mostly influence you in the life? I got the most
answers are sense of sight and sound. The purpose is to find out which sensory design brings stronger feeling for most people. Thus, I will attempt to combine this idea in my design. The final question is about which design is the most attractive for people and the result is product design. Actually, my expectation is to develop packaging design, but I think I can create some products as well because I have product design background before. Thus, I can design products first and packaging the products. I think this way will be perfect solution for presenting HSP topic. 73
PACKAGING
MA PROJECT SOLUTION A STRESS-RELIEVING GADGETS KIT AND PACKAGING DESIGN
After I finished to read HSP books, organise questionnaire survey and interview psychology lecturers, I got a lot of inspirations in this process and I attempt to synthesise all ideas. I consider stress-relieving gadgets kit is the best way for showing in the outcome. I can present HSP issue and some small gadgets can be directly used to help people relieve pressure. Thus, I think I can do product design and packaging design. I hope to create own products and package by myself.
THE FOLLOWING CONTENTS ARE MY IDEAS SO FAR: The idea of sensitive trait – Glass I think sensitive trait includes fragile meaning. There is a phrase in Chinese which is “Glass-heart”. The meaning describes a person is sensitive and the person’s heart gets hurt easily. Thus, I think glass material is a nice idea to present on packaging, but I still consider what the way is better to use the idea. The idea of relieving solutions – water, music, meditation, mindfulness The idea of water, music, meditation and mindfulness are from HSP books, questionnaire survey and professional interview. The four things are suitable to be applied in designing small products and visual images or connecting with applications.
74
PRODUCT RESEARCH
Stress-relieving gadgets idea • Earphone idea In my survey, most people like to listen to music to deal with their pressure. Thus, I think it may be part of a product. • Smartphone trumpet speaker idea In my survey, most people like to watch movie and funny films to relieve stress. Thus, I think it may be part of a product. • Tea accessory idea People often use rest time to drink some tea, so I think drinking tea and taking a rest have a strong connection in between. Thus, I think it may be part of a product. • Tableware idea In my survey, most people like to eat delicious food to solve their stress. Thus, I think I could create some tableware. • Hot pack for eye idea In my survey, when people suffer stress, they think sleeping is a solution for relieving. Thus, I think I could innovate a hot pack for eyes product.
75
PACKAGING RESEARCH Packaging design survey • Earphone packaging design Headphones is one of the most interesting product for me in the product research, so I search for further packaging design about headphones. I found the most attractive one is this design below. It has a very strong visual tension. It is different from the monotonous packaging design of general headphones.
76
• Jewellery packaging design Jewellery packaging design is another independent idea. Some of Jewellery has transparent appearance and beautiful shape. I think it is very suitable for expressing the fragile trait in HSP. Thus, I also searched for some jewellery packaging designs. Maybe, the final outcome is presented through the way.
77
APPLICATION RESEARCH The application of meditation in app – The application of “Calm” The main function of the app is to teach people how to use meditation to relax the body and mind. This app also provides other functions such as listening relaxed-music and sound, guiding to improving sleep quality, adjusting the rhythm of breathing. Teaching yoga...etc. I think it is quite successful app. It is quite interesting to me. Thus, I think maybe I can use this app as one of the ways to relieve pressure. Maybe there is a QR code link that can be connected to this app help my audience to relax.
78
Natural sounds

79
WHITE NOISE RESEARCH The application of white noise The white noise is inspired by the app of “Calm”. Thus, I further searched for white noise which is mainly used to concentrate on studying or working, relieving stress and improving the quality of sleep. In the future, it may be integrated into my project, but I still need to think more how to combine it.
APPLYING PHRASES The application of inspiring phrases Use some short sentences to help people keep aware mindfulness. • Accept your unique sensitivity, be confident, be yourself • “People often label themselves in a particular type. Only get rid of this rule and have the opportunity to thrive.” Start from self-awareness, self-acceptance, then self-growth. • When you feel nervous and anxious, you should slow down your tempo. • Like own original characteristic. • Love and protect yourself. • Empathising yourself is as same as loving yourself. • Improve the ability of narcissism. • The sensitivity is equal to the norm. • “it’s ok to be sensitive. Just accept it.” Said Christine Norman. • “keep and stay calm campaign.” Said Christine Norman. • "Hakuna matata" (it is a Swahili language phrase from East Africa meaning "no worries". The word "hakuna" means "there is not here" while "matata" means "problems".)

MA PROJECT DESIGN PROCESS Visual experiment 1 : The idea of ripple The first idea is my mind that i s ra i n d ro p b e c a u s e ra i ny day is like a bad mood. I want to present sad, stressful and negative feeling. I think it will be connected to the topic of highly sensitive person. Thus, I start illustrating ripple pattern. I imagine that many rain drops fall on the ground and the ground will appear many ripples. Also, I am thinking that the pattern can be used in packaging box or designing small card. I put some short sentences on the pattern in order to convey clear content and thoughts for audience. In addition, I draw an eye and tears which meaning is to show a person’s sad feeling and put some encouraging sentences on the image. the other pattern is tablet idea. High sensitivity is not a disorder, so I try to develop the picture which shows HSP does not need medicine to treat the problem. They just need some relaxing tips to help them relieve stress. However, I got feedback from the audience. Three images are considered incorrect information. The ripple image is not like ripple. The image of eye and tears conveys sad mood. The idea of tablets gives people the feeling is that HSP may be a really serious problem. All of these situations make me consider this series of pictures is too negative, so I decide to change the idea to design other images.
82
Visual experiment 2 : The idea of dark cloud The second idea is about dark cloud. Dark cloud is like anxious feeling for me, so it may be suitable for presenting HSP’s feature. And this time, I focus on designing the packaging box for outside and inside’s image. My concept is that outside packaging box looks like anxious and depressing feeling, but inside pattern is totally different. I think I can show sunny day in the other side. Thus, audience can get a surprise when they open the box. The purpose is also support that when people use my packaging kit, the mood can be change from sadness to happiness. There are two different images on the outside surface which are dark cloud and rain drop. Inside patterns also have two differences which is rainbow, sunshine and clear sea images. I attempt to design a relaxing feeling that is why I choose these objects. Furthermore, I print out these patterns and make a small sample because I want to check the real feeling. After that, I test some people and their opinion is that they feel the images are clear to convey the meaning and they understand, but some of them said that the method may be too direct. They suggest I can consider other way to develop this idea. Therefore, I keep this idea and re-design the patterns. The inside pattern
The outside pattern

84
Visual experiment 3: Keep developing the idea of dark cloud This experiment is more focusing to choose a real packaging box and developing the patterns. I set my relaxing kit that is the size of 20 cm x 30 cm x 8 cm. I find some packaging sample to try make the box by myself. Additionally, I change the image. I use a soft colour in the cloud pattern. I feel it is better for this time compared with previous images, but I am still not really satisfied with this image. Thus, I create the other pattern. Raining idea reference This pattern is slightly different concept. When I was researching a raining illustration, I found out an idea which is Spotify’s advertisement. It describes that when you feel stressful, anxious, tired feeling, or any annoying emotions, you just listen your favourite songs. The images use different negative words to represent rain drops and the umbrella is like your favourite music to protect you. You will not get wet from these negative emotions, so I think this idea is quite nice to develop it.

Second edition
85
Similarly, I want to show the inside image which is like a sunny day. I keep the same concept to design sunshine image. I choose different events to put on the sunshine which meaning is when you feel pressure and you can do these different events. These events can help people to overcome their depressing feeling.
Therefore, I write little information to describe that people can use my product to experience comfortable feeling by five senses.
Furthermore, I design five images for each sense. I consider these images will be put on the bottom of my products and it can make audience feel surprised when they see the information.
86
Visual experiment 4: Develop the small packaging boxes of gadget This part, I am focusing on creating different patterns of my gadgets. I decide to put five things in my packaging kit which are booklet, earphone, essential oil, small tea bag, biscuit, and clay. Booklet represents for visual relaxation; earphone represents for sound relaxation; essential oil represents for smelling relaxation; small tea bag and biscuit represents for tasting relaxation; clay represents for touching relaxation. I use different shape of the gadget to think the boxes, but I only design some of patterns because I find the problem of this situation is all the boxes are not same style for me. I attempt to fix the problem, but it still makes me feel strange and stuck in the idea. For example, I draw two boxes of essential oil and I am still not satisfied with the images. Finally, I choose to stop the concept and try other methods to create the same style.
87
Visual experiment 5: Develop the small packaging boxes by five senses The session, I use five senses to develop my patterns. I draw five icons for each sense which are eye, ear, nose, tongue, and finger. In addition, I think when my audience see the boxes that needs to give a comfortable feeling and nice visualisation, so I choose five soft colour to design the box. The box is a cube and the size is 6 cm x 6cm x 6cm. Thus, I solve the previous problem which is all boxes are not same style. I am quite satisfied with the boxes. Also, I design two editions for the boxes. The first edition is white boxes and different colour lines on each box in order to express different senses. The other one is different colour boxes and only white lines on each box for expressing five senses. After I test two editions for audience, I get the feedback is that they feel more comfortable for choosing different colour boxes and this edition is stronger identification than the other one. Thus, I choose different colour boxes finally. SENSE OF TOUCH
SENSE OF TASTE
SENSE OF SMELL
SENSE OF HEARING
88
Visual experiment 5: Develop the detail of packaging image in the small box This part is focusing the detail pattern in each small box. There are five object in the box. I consider how to arrange earphone, essential oil, biscuit, tea bag, and clay. I use my previous packaging box design pattern to put in the part. I think these icons are suitable to use it. Smile face is used in earphone’s holder. Cloud image is used in clay and it can be a packaging paper. Additionally, I design other three stickers for tea bag, biscuit, and essential oil. These stickers will be put on the objects in order to decorate the products.
Earphone holder
Clay packaging paper
Tea bag and biscuit sticker
Essential oil sticker
Phytocide
89
Visual experiment 6: Create the visual booklet The session, I need a small booklet to present what is a highly sensitive person because all of my packaging boxes do not mention about HSP information. Thus, this booklet is quite important message. I also have to summarise the key point in the booklet and have a comfortable image for experiencing nice visualisation. I choose Q and A method to ask a question and give an answer. I think this way is the easiest way to convey HSP information and I also put a website link and QR code which are further knowledge about HSP. People can notice the issue and I can achieve my purpose in the project.

Packaging boxes practical work I start making the model of my final outcome in order to check any problems in my design. After I make out my model, I find some of my box’s design is wrong, so I have to correct the problems and some patterns are too small. There are quite many details which are needed to change it.

The final outcome: All the packaging patterns After I finish doing the real size of packaging box, I find some slight problems on my packaging box. Then, I fix these problems and finish my final outcome.

Poster design I am thinking that the raining image of my packaging box may be a poster when I build the exhibition. However, I still feel my pattern is quite normal because it is not attracting people at first attention. I find a filter which can solve the problem. Thus, the raining image looks like darker and depressing now and I feel new image is better than the previous one.

Extra visual experiment: Foiling There is one problem in the sunshine image. The word is not really clear in the pattern. I hope to use shining colour to show positive energy, but yellow and soft blue match together and it causes the problem. Therefore, I consider to foil the words. When I success to foil the words, the outcome is quite nice and pretty, but I cannot foil the size which is bigger than A3 size. That is the limit of the machine, so maybe It cannot choose the way to design my poster.
