The Great British Summer is in full swing with lots of sporting events to enjoy! As we go to press, Britain is gearing up for the Olympics, and the world’s top tennis players are about to grunt and sweat it out on the Wimbledon courts. If you are inspired by the action at Wimbledon get down to Oxstalls Tennis Centre and bring out your inner tennis star – see page 13 for details of how to get involved. Our ‘What’s On’ section is packed with things to do for families this summer. Artistic kids can get crafty at Tewkesbury’s Heritage Centre throughout the holidays where a variety of workshops are being held from puppet making to weaving. The Bird and Deer Park at Prinknash is having a teddy bears picnic on 28th July and The Dean Forest Railway is hosting ‘A Day Out with Thomas’ from 17th-19th August. There’s plenty of free entertainment in Gloucester too! Gloucester Carnival will light up the city park on 17th July with fairground rides, music, stalls and parades. The Café René in Southgate Street is hosting an array of brilliant musicians at its 10th Annual Rhythm and Blues Festival, with donations invited for Macmillan Cancer Support. Plus, we have a further treat for music lovers – tickets for one lucky reader to win and see Status Quo perform at Eastnor Castle – see page 17. This month we review the Shahi Balti, a welcoming restaurant in the city centre to meet friends and enjoy an Indian meal. They have a fantastic offer for readers of The Local Answer – a whopping 25% off the food bill. Courtesy of The Apple Tree Inn at Minsterworth, we also have a fabulous competition to win Sunday Lunch for 4 people! Finally, don’t miss the great offers in our Homes & Gardens section! You can make valuable savings on new blinds and shutters through to complete bathroom or kitchen installations.

Have a fantastic summer!

Famous Face

From Tin Mine to Television Our Famous Face this month is Geoff Rowe, otherwise known as The West Country’s top comedian ‘Jethro’. A Cornish man through and through, Jethro was born in St Buryan in 1948 and went to school in St Just. He has never lost his distinctive Cornish accent, and his jokes celebrate his heritage, the colourful characters of the West Country, family life and the quirky rural places and traditions of the places he loves. As a young man his working life started conventionally – Geoff was apprenticed as a carpenter and worked as a timber man in a tin mine. Out of hours he participated in the St Just and District Operatic Society and it was during this period that he found he had a talent for making people laugh as well as singing. Jethro got his first break on TV in the programme Treasure Hunt, where he played a pirate co-host. He went on to become a household name on television starring alongside Jim Davidson and Des O’Connor during the 1990s. A successful career ensued, with numerous tours, stage appearances and videos, plus his own show ‘The Jethro Junction’ and an appearance at The Royal Variety Show in front of The Queen. Off stage a quiet and private person, Geoff enjoys country pursuits such as clay pigeon shooting and horses. He has his own stables and proudly shows his horses at events around the country. A supporter of various charitable causes, Jethro notably raised £20,000 for the Bristol Cancer Open Scanner Appeal. Geoff runs his own venue ‘Jethro’s Club’ in his home town of Lewdown, Devon. Here in Gloucestershire, Jethro fans will be able to see him perform at The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury on July 5th, or at The Town Hall in Cheltenham on 3rd December as part of a nationwide tour.

Historic 16th century country pub with traditional features and beautiful countryside views. Specialists in outside catering and mobile bar for all occasions. Fantastic garden yurt for hire. Great venue for weddings, birthdays, barn dances, family occasions and parties. Beautiful garden with childrens’ play area. Family friendly pub. Traditional wholesome home made pub food with a twist. Corporate events.

Leading map publishers, Collins, teamed up with Britain’s largest walking organisation, Ramblers, to produce ‘Short Walks in The Cotswolds’ – an excellent guide with twenty easy walks, all less than 5 miles in length. The Local Answer has been given kind permission to reproduce each walk for our readers. Why not try this one and, if you like it, buy Collins’ superb pocket-size paperback (ISBN: 978-0-00-735942-4) – only £5.99 and available online at www.harpercollins.co.uk. importance as an archaeological site, for it has had exceptional historic continuity as a settlement. There is evidence of human habitation since Neolithic times, a period of some 5000 to 6000 years. Just to the east lies Salmonsbury Camp, an Iron Age hillfort that was occupied until Roman times. The Romans crossed the River Windrush here via the Fosse Way, the bridge, of course, having long since decayed. There are several places of interest in Bourton that the walker may wish to visit before or after the walk. Here are a few: • Birdland Park and Gardens is home to over 500 birds including parrots, flamingos, falcons, ibis, pelicans and the only King Penguins in England. The gardens cover 7 acres (2.8ha) of landscaped parks and lakes. • The Model Village is a replica of Bourton at the time it opened in 1937 at 1/9 th scale, complete with authentic stone walled and tiled houses, churches and a miniature River Windrush. It took four years to construct, and follows the detail of the village faithfully, including a model of the model. • Bourton Model Railway exhibition covers about 500 square feet (46 sq m) with over 40 British and continental trains travelling through various miniature scenes. • The Cotswold Motoring Museum opened in 1978 with a 1920s theme but has since expanded to include motoring in the 1960s and 1970s. Among the vintage cars, motorcycles and bicycles are thousands of items of memorabilia, and a collection of over 800 period advertising signs.

Simply ‘The Best’

72 Westgate Street, Gloucester GL1 2NZ Tel: 01452 385386 On an unseasonably wild and wet summer evening The Local Answer team went along to The Shahi Balti to sample the menu and meet the owner Mr Alam and his staff. We were given a warm welcome to this family restaurant, which was started by Mr Alam’s father in 1992. There has been an Indian Restaurant on this site since 1975. The restaurant boasts a loyal customer base (75% of customers are regular diners) and Mr Alam says the reason they return is simple – they consider Shahi Balti to be “the best”. It also helps that the head chef has been with the restaurant for twelve years and the atmosphere delivers an intimate and friendly dining experience without pretension. The Chef mixes his own spices and takes pride in using quality fresh ingredients to create delicious dishes. The restaurant offers all the traditional Indian favourites made with a choice of meats or vegetarian options, and fish dishes such as sea bass, salmon or trout are also available. There are various ‘Shahi Specialities’ on the menu including Chicken Nuwabi, a medium spiced dish cooked with peppers, onion, coriander and selected spices; Chicken Naga for those who like it hot and a choice of milder creamier dishes for diners with more delicate taste buds. The tables are simply but elegantly laid and the walls are decorated in neutral cream with paintings of rural Indian scenes. The restaurant is licensed and has a well stocked bar. We began our meal with a selection of starters including Chicken Tikka, Samosas and Onion Bhajis, along with Papadoms and a selection of Chutneys to stimulate our appetites. The portions were generous and all of the dishes were devoured with relish.

For our main course we sampled a variety of dishes – Tikka Massala, Jalfrezi and Madras – along with side dishes of rice, vegetables and naan breads. We enjoyed tasting the different heats and flavours of the dishes and at the end everyone felt we had enjoyed a hearty and satisfying meal in pleasant surroundings. Located centrally on Westgate Street, the Shahi Balti is a convenient place to eat with parking close by. Starters are priced from £2.20 and main dishes from £4.50 so whether you want an impromptu meal out with friends or a cosy dinner for two without breaking the bank, the Shahi Balti is the place to go. A takeaway service is also available. See our voucher page for Shahi’s latest offer!

Delicious Dishes Garlic and Chilli Steak Stir Fry ~ Serves 4 ~

You will need: Steak of your choice (I use rump) and quantity up to you (depends how big a portion you want!). 1 clove of garlic, crushed or use lazy garlic. 15ml (1tbsp) root ginger, peeled and grated. 120ml (8tbsp) chilli sauce. 60ml (4tbsp) soy sauce. 250g (9oz) ready to eat medium egg noodles. 1 red pepper. 1 bunch spring onions. 30ml (2tbsp) fresh coriander. 40g (1.5oz) cashew nuts. Method: 1 Cut the steak into strips and place in a bowl with the chilli sauce, soy sauce, garlic and ginger. Mix together, cover and place in the fridge for at least 20 minutes, but better if you do this in the morning ready for teatime - it gives the steak longer to marinate. 2 Finely dice the red pepper. Chop the coriander.

Cut the spring onion into strips. This can all be done ahead and stored in the fridge. 3 When ready to eat, in a large wok, cook the red pepper for a couple of minutes, add the steak and marinade and stir-fry for several minutes until the steak is cooked to your liking. 4 Meanwhile heat up the noodles according to the packet instructions and stir into the steak. 5 Finally add the coriander, spring onions and cashew nuts, and serve. This is so easy to make as you can prepare it all early in the day then it just takes a few minutes at teatime to cook. Remember to add fresh coriander before serving, it really does make the dish.

Leader’s Life

Live music in Gloucester Park – part of a packed programme of events for all to enjoy

with Councillor Paul James

Leader of Gloucester City Council

The success of the Olympic Torch relay through the city, with 15000 spectators, and an extended weekend of events for the Queenʼs Diamond Jubilee have set the scene for a summer of activity in Gloucester. Our first Night Market takes place in Kings Square on 4th July from 5pm-10pm, with a strong take-up from local traders. Itʼs also “Independentsʼ Day”, when we celebrate and promote our local independent retailers who make the city unique. Another first is the Hat Festival on 13th and 14th July. Thereʼs only one other in the country, in Bridport, and the packed programme promises to offer something for everyone. From 20th-22nd July itʼs the second Gloucester Quays Food Festival with celebrity chefs James Martin and Gino DʼAcampo, as well as our very own Phil Vickery. The Carnival this year takes place on 28th July, in the middle of two weeks of activities held in Gloucester Park, with the Park Live music festival kicking off events on the 21st, a family day on the 22nd and a family sports day on the 29th. A Carnival Committee of volunteers have overseen this yearʼs programme and I think it has breathed new life into a Gloucester tradition. The “Spirit of

dee & griffin

2012” carnival theme is open to wide interpretation and I hope we will see lots of entries, as well as the great crowds we always enjoy. The Blues Festival runs again from the 21st until the 29th July in venues around the city and perennial favourites like the Hillfield Swings concert are sure to be as popular as ever. The fireworks finale on 4th August is always a spectacular way to round off the fortnight. Then in September, we head into Gloucester Day and our first major Gloucester History Festival. Itʼs going to be a busy summer – so letʼs make the most of it. For more information visit www.thecityofgloucester.co.uk.

They sing about ‘Rocking All Over The World’ and now they are on their way to Eastnor Castle! Status Quo arrive at the Castle for a night to remember when Messrs Parfitt and Rossi & Co. will rock the castle with their very own brand of rock & roll on Saturday 28th July. With world-wide sales in excess of 118 million units and 22 Top Ten British hit singles the Quo celebrated their 45th anniversary in 2010 and still they maintain a hectic annual tour schedule, voted the hardest working band by PRS for the past two years. It is estimated that they have played to over 24 million people in 5,500 live shows and at Eastnor the promoters KAL Music anticipate another great crowd. Status Quo singles’ hits include Caroline, Rocking All Over The World, Down Down, What You’re Proposing, Rain, Break The Rules, Paper Plane, Whatever You Want, Roll Over Lay Down....the list goes on – and you’ll hear them all at Eastnor Castle. In total they have recorded 64 British hit singles - more than any other band - 22 of which have hit the Top Ten. The first hit was Pictures of Matchstick Men which reached Number 7 in January 1968. In addition they have had 31 hit albums on the Album Charts, more than any band except The Rolling Stones. Experiencing a Quo concert is definitely on the ‘To Do’ list and The Eastnor audience will not leave disappointed. So grab your friends and create a group, bring a picnic and get ready to rock & roll with the kings of rock Status Quo. Special guests for the evening will be 10CC, another classic British band with an extensive back catalogue of hits including the unforgettable "I'm not in love" And the night ends with a grand firework finale ! Thomas the Tank Engine steams into the Forest of Dean to cheers all round, though the Fat Controller still has to be convinced. Thomas has done some daft things over the years. His whistle stuck and his fire was put out to stop it, a big fish stuck in his tank, he ran out of water and he ran out of coal. You name it, it’s happened to Thomas. However, the Dean Forest Railway will have a job to brick him up in a tunnel, as there are now none in the Forest! These will be full days of simple entertainment in a remarkable environment and good value for money! The railway’s gift shop at Norchard possibly has the largest range of Thomas the Tank Engine themed gifts in the South West and Wales. Strawberries, Raspberries & Broad Beans Summer Pudding

20%off

At Over Farm in July ‘Pick Your Own’ is in full swing, so why not bring the family and enjoy selecting your own delicious produce grown right here fruit can’t get any fresher! As usual there are lots of tempting treats in our shop - a huge range of fruit, vegetables, bakery, meat, wine and beer.

Line a bowl with white bread. Soften a bowlful of mixed summer fruit by genty simmering with sugar to taste. Fill up the lined bowl with the softened fruit and top with bread. Cover the bowl with a weighted plate and chill for 2 to 3 hours or overnight. The bread will soak up the juices and become a wonderful rich colour. To serve, turn the pudding out onto a plate, divide and add fresh cream, marscapone or yoghurt. Mint leaves add a finishing touch.

In t he G arden with Julia Smith

I don’t really do much garden maintenance any more apart from in my overgrown jungle where to be honest you don’t get to see many weeds as there is so much planting they have to fight to survive! However I was thinking about it the other day and imagining having 20 minutes to do something to tidy up a garden before visitors arrived what would be the tasks to do? I would plump for weeding the front 10cm of the border leaving bare earth, cutting the grass and trimming the edges. Obviously some of you have more garden than me and this would take an hour or two, but it is the equivalent of a quick vacuum up and spraying polish around in the house – it really looks more than the time it takes and you can ignore the back of the Leucanthemum x superbum border especially at this time of year when it is probably full to bursting with luxurious growth unless you have the time. You may have problems with your Bay trees having yellowed, distorted and curled leaves at the tips, this is caused by Bay suckers which are sapfeeding insects. They are prevalent at this time of the year. Prune off affected stems to keep it under control and remove the leaf litter from around the base of the Bay. I wouldn’t spray with anything as you will be wanting to use the leaves in cooking but if you don’t and want to, use a contact insecticide. Plant of the month is the Leucanthemum x superbum which has a large white daisy flower on tall stems and will bloom well every year. They tend to spread so don’t be afraid to dig up any you don’t want. They can flop, so in early spring construct a ring of canes with criss-crossed string over them or use a ready- made plant support like the grids on legs that come in plastic coated wire. Dead-head regularly to prolong flowering. Team them up with Pinks and Scabious to create that cottage garden feel. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just a replanted border or a complete garden design, do contact me by mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Make this year a special one for your garden!

RETAIL THERAPY

The last 12 months have not been great for a lot of household names on the High Street, with Clinton Cards, Habitat, Peacocks and Allied Carpets amongst those companies entering administration. Interestingly they represent completely different sectors, making it difficult to identify which sector seems to be struggling most. But struggling they most certainly are, with the exception largely of food stores, which are in the ʻhave to buyʼ category, in so much as we all still need to buy food, whatever money we have at our disposal. Besides which, most of these stores are out of town now; food retail long since left the High Street. No, itʼs the ʻnice to buyʼ stores that are at greatest risk. Not even a household brand is guaranteed survival or success. Just ask the aforementioned companies. There are many factors contributing to the problems. Some of them are obvious – we are all aware of the move towards internet shopping and there are no signs of let up in the levels of business rates. Quarterly rent payments fall due again at this time of year, when those stores that are struggling with cash flow have to determine whether or not to commit to another three monthsʼ trading. The Government would have us spend, but do they really provide tangible incentives for us to do so? And then thereʼs the thorny question of how we can spend what we maybe havenʼt got. No itʼs not an easy time to be in the retail sector and the likelihood is that further business failures will happen in the next 12 months as well. Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

Security at Summer Events Dear Readers, I do hope you’re all well and the wet weather has not been too miserable for you. Let’s hope that July will be sunnier. The Olympics start very shortly and Gloucestershire Constabulary have numerous commitments over the coming months both locally and nationally. We are hoping that local Neil Smith Gloucester Inspector service delivery will not be affected too much however it is going to be an extremely busy time for your local policing teams. National security is very high on the agenda and although I am sure there will be no problems, if any of you have any concerns surrounding certain aspects of security please do not hesitate to contact the police on 101. We do have members of competing Olympic teams staying within the Gloucester area and I am sure we will all make them feel welcome.

Myself and my officers will be working at both of these events so please do come along with your families and have a chat with us. I am currently planning a police/community open day that will be held at Barton Street police station after the Olympic period and will give you all further details of this in next month’s edition. Here you will be able to meet your local officers and other key partners that work with us to make our communities safe. Have a great July and I look forward to seeing you very soon.
