Re: Boston Arts Academy, Project #7085 Dear Ms. Lyons, Since its founding in 1998, Boston Arts Academy has achieved remarkable success serving a diverse student population with a rigorous academic curriculum grounded in the visual and performing arts, sending 94% of its students on to higher education, getting national recognition for putting the Arts into STEM education, and all within the constraints of an 19th c. woolen factory and postal warehouse. As Headmaster Anne Clark states clearly, the Boston Arts Academy, the only public high school for the arts in Boston, “must be so much more than just a high school.” It must be a maker space, a museum, a cultural institution. The BAA embraces design as fundamental to the arts, and so too the design of the BAA’s new building must be imaginative and inspiring to students for whom the arts are both a passion and a pathway to successful professional careers. HMFH is widely known for excellence and innovation in the planning and design of high schools that support creative approaches to learning. Since our 1985 design of the Penn High School in Osceola, Indiana, with its then innovative black box and an 850 seat performance theater for traveling productions from New York and Chicago, HMFH has been designing high schools with significant performing and visual arts programs. Our arts addition at Boston Latin School, Visual and Performing Arts Center at Beaver Country Day School, and the Fitzgerald Theater at Cambridge Rindge and Latin, demonstrate some of our broad expertise in performing and visual arts. Maker spaces at Wayland High School, the Possible Project and Cambridge Friends School add a new dimension to the design of spaces that integrate making, doing, and learning. Because the BAA project is “so much more than just a high school” the HMFH team includes Theatre Projects Consultants Inc. as a key consultant and two HMFH project architects to assure that this building embodies high performance in all of its dimensions. The HMFH team is led by George Metzger, a senior principal whose four decades of experience includes work with the MSBA, City of Boston and many of the firm’s 23 high school projects. Project Manager and Senior Associate Chin Lin brings his unique experience with Boston projects, familiarity with BAA’s mission and education, and passion for high performance design. Our duel project architects will assure the school’s long term operation by drawing on HMFH’s depth of expertise in imaginative and inspiring design in an urban setting, high performance in education, and on-time and on-budget project delivery. Theatre Projects Consultants, a nationally acclaimed performance design firm, will work closely with BAA and HMFH from the very opening act of envisioning a unique educational plan until the school opens its ground breaking new facility. HMFH Senior Principal Laura Wernick and TPC principals David Rosenburg and Scott Crossfield will help BAA educators forge a unique educational program that expresses BAA’s mission and conforms to the MSBA’s development standards. HMFH and TPC worked closely together on the previous effort to co-locate BAA and Quincy Upper School. HMFH has executed 14 projects through the MSBA 963 CMR 2.00 School Building Grant Program, and understands the process required to achieve a successful outcome. HMFH currently has seven projects with MSBA: three under construction, two in Design Development, and two in the Study phase. HMFH has worked on eight CM at Risk projects, most of which included early bid packages. Our ability to

combine the advantages of CM at Risk with effective teamwork and coordination using BIM and web-based communication and tracking tools has resulted in projects that are among the most cost-effective within the MSBA program. Security also is a foremost concern for all communities. Our team includes Project Architect Vassilios Valaes who is certified in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). HMFH’s MSBA projects have all been LEED or CHPS certified and Project Manager Chin Lin serves on the national CHPS Board of Directors. The proposed design team is fully available and ready to begin work right away to meet the project schedule and milestones and will remain with the project through all phases of design and construction. I certify that HMFH Architects is a qualified designer meeting the requirements of MGL Chapter 7C, Section 44, that we possess the necessary professional licenses required to execute this project, and that we meet all of the minimum qualifications identified in the initial RFS, as well as the one subsequent addendum. As a Massachusetts Registered Architect and Principal of the firm, I will direct the project team, and along with others in the firm, I have successfully completed and maintained certification of the Massachusetts Certified Public Purchasing Official program. HMFH Architects is an Equal Opportunity Employer and a Woman-Owned Business Enterprise; in addition, pursuant to MGL Chapter 7C, Section 6, we will contract with MBE and WBE consultants as certified by SDO within the categories of work required to complete this project. Headmaster Clark states that the BAA is “beyond motivated, ready to go, and ready to dream.” In the pages of this application, we outline our qualifications and expertise and present our ideas for turning dreams into reality for the Boston Arts Academy.
Very truly yours, HMFH ARCHITECTS

PROJECT: Cambridge Rindge and Latin School ADDRESS: 459 Broadway Cambridge, MA 02138
CONTACT: James Maloney PHONE: (617) 349-6240 EMAIL: jmaloney@cpsd.us
Description and date(s) of supplies or services provided: This phased occupied renovation of Cambridge’s 400,000 sf high school’s interconnected academic buildings was executed via a detailed phasing plan. The construction was sequenced so that only two academic years were impacted by the effort. Design for this 1,800-student school features new science facilities, food service improvements, and redesigned spaces for the school’s four learning communities. New finishes and lighting paired with color and pattern assist with wayfinding and orientation in the large complex, which is located on an urban site with the Public Library and Recreation Center. The renovation of this building is one of only a handful of school renovation projects in the country to achieve LEED Gold certification. The building employs a chilled beam HVAC system, a rooftop PV array, low flow fixtures and other low cost measures to improve energy efficiency. The renewed building will also provide heat from cogeneration to warm pool water in the War Memorial, another LEED Silver certified renovation designed by HMFH. Construction was completed in 2011.
PROJECT: Hanover High School ADDRESS: 287 Cedar Street Hanover, MA 02339
CONTACT: Dr. Kristine Nash PHONE: (508) 818-8355 EMAIL: N/A
Description and date(s) of supplies or services provided: Following HMFH’s feasibility study analyzing renovation and replacement options, HMFH was engaged to design this new 800-student high school designed to meet MA-CHPS sustainability guidelines. The three-story academic building is organized around a “town square” cafeteria, which serves as a central student hub during the day and public meeting area for evening use. Classrooms and labs are arranged in clusters, with science labs and versatile labs for math and world languages. The school’s many breakout spaces allow students to work in small groups while supporting teacher oversight of multiple groups. The school also features an extensive design lab suite, with separate robotics/engineering and fabrication labs. The program for the school was developed through inclusive community visioning workshops. Construction was completed in 2011.
PROJECT: Wayland High School ADDRESS: 264 Old Connecticut Path Wayland, MA 01778
CONTACT: Lea Anderson PHONE: (508) 358-7755 EMAIL: landerson@wayland.ma.us
Description and date(s) of supplies or services provided: Faced with the possible loss of New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation, the Town of Wayland hired HMFH to design a solution that would not only meet the concerns outlined in the NEASC report, but also reflect the community’s strong academic tradition and retain the suburban campus environment. The complete reconstruction of the academic wing for this 1,100-student school incorporates extensive sustainable measures, including an integrated daylighting system that combines external sunshades, internal light shelves and rooftop light monitors, all of which substantially reduce electrical consumption. Anchored by an open courtyard that is heavily used by students, the campus includes a new Commons Building that houses student dining, arts, and athletics, and also functions as the public space for community sporting and theater events. Construction was completed in 2012.
PROJECT: Winthrop Middle/High School ADDRESS: 151 Pauline Street Winthrop, MA 02152
CONTACT: John Macero PHONE: (617) 846-5500 x 7110 EMAIL: jmacero@winthrop.k12.ma.us
Description and date(s) of supplies or services provided: Based on the feasibility study, the community of Winthrop discovered that renovating their existing high school would be an expensive proposition with little benefit to student learning, and that the town’s aging middle school was also reaching the end of its life cycle. With the added challenge of no buildable sites in town, the option that made the most sense was combining the two into a new facility. The design of the new 970-student middle/high school is based on the community’s vision for a combined school that maintains separate identities. Two L-shaped academic wings create distinct zones for the middle school and high school, each with their own separate entrances, cafeterias, science labs and administration. Each school also has its own learning commons with spaces for hands-on work, while the gymnasium, library and auditorium are shared. Construction is expected to be completed in 2016.

Was this project completed by the prime applicant or subconsultant(s), if subconsultant(s), please identify: Prime Applicant Please provide a description and date(s) of supplies or services provided: The three-story facility features a black box theater outfitted with sophisticated, computer-controlled sound and lighting systems and flexible seating, plus a scene shop, costume storage and workroom, lighting storage, control room, green room, drama instruction classroom, and dressing rooms. The music program includes classrooms for choral, jazz, dance, and a chamber ensemble, plus practice rooms and storage. In the visual arts department, students have a photo studio and darkroom, and studios for 2-D art, print making, and computer graphics. Completed in July of 2004. Services provided: Architectural Design through Construction Administration Please identify any specific project challenges and solutions related to the performing or visual arts component: The project faced significant challenges relating to noise transmission and how to build a black box theater as a teaching space. The design team needed to find a creative solution to minimize noise transmission from nearby spaces infiltrating the teaching spaces. This was solved by designing an isolated black box within the surrounding school that could contain the noises to its space. Designing the black box theater as a teaching space meant that the design must provide end-users access to the control room through a safe network of catwalks that allowed students access to a hands-on learning experience in stage lighting, technology, theatrical rigging, stage curtains and set design.

Media Arts Studio & Cambridge Rindge and Latin School 795 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139 James Maloney - COO, Cambridge Public Schools (617) 349-6420 jmaloney@cpsd.us
Was this project completed by the prime applicant or subconsultant(s), if subconsultant(s), please identify: Prime Applicant Please provide a description and date(s) of supplies or services provided: The Media Arts Studio was a collaborative venture between Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS), the city’s community cable system, and Cambridge Community Access Television (CCTV). HMFH transformed a former auto dealership into a new 5,500 sf hands-on, community-based media arts studio containing a mix of production, editing, instructional and administrative spaces neatly fitted into a long, narrow building. A large, three-camera production studio and adjacent control room anchor the far end of the building while the 16-seat classroom/editing lab faces the street. In between, offices for the various user programs, a pair of editing rooms, a narration room, a master control room, and a green room make up the rest of the complex. Performing arts spaces were also renewed at CRLS with a comprehensive refurbishment of the existing theater, new teaching spaces, and renovation of the lobby and marquee. Media Arts Studio completed in 2005, CRLS completed in 2011.
Services provided: Architectural Design through Construction Administration Please identify any specific project challenges and solutions related to the performing or visual arts component: Finding a creative solution to separate the video/audio recording studio from the adjacent automotive garage for the Media Arts Studio was a challenge. The solution included locating the studios at the opposite side of the acoustical separation wall, so that rooms and corridors within the building acted as an acoustical buffer. HMFH also worked with the three users of the space to help them figure out the various program spaces, optimal adjacencies, and created a secure community entrance. At CRLS, an underutilized entrance was transformed with new signage, inviting the community into the renovated lobby and theater space. Faculty offices and spaces for the theater department were consolidated and new teaching spaces including a renovated control room reinvigorated the school’s performance spaces.

Inside the new 106,500-square-foot teaching complex, Theatre Projects integrated cutting-edge equipment, seating, and lighting design seamlessly with Frank Gehry’s signature architecture, all while meeting the complex artistic and technical flexibility desired by the New World Symphony. Completed in January of 2011. Services provided: Programming, concept design, theatre planning, performance equipment design and specification Please identify any specific project challenges and solutions related to the performing or visual arts component: A significant challenge at New World was integrating new technology all of the technical functions over the stage and auditorium with the extremely complex surfaces of the Frank Gehry-designed ceiling. This included integration of rigging points, moving light fixtures, and high-res video projectors in a system that was easily accessible for maintenance throughout the life of the building. Theatre Projects accomplished this with an attentive, vocal, and collaborative approach to the design process, ensuring they were equal partners on the project team. In the end, the final result was a world-class facility for impactful performances, in-depth education, and bringing together community.

Was this project completed by the prime applicant or subconsultant(s), if subconsultant(s), please identify: Subconsultant - Theatre Projects Please provide a description and date(s) of supplies or services provided: This expansion to the Cleveland Institute of Music provides a new 250-seat recital hall and distance learning studios that can support live broadcasts to and from other communities and institutions throughout the world. Completed in November of 2007. Services provided: Programming, concept design, theatre planning, performance equipment design and specification Please identify any specific project challenges and solutions related to the performing or visual arts component: The architect’s vision of a grand glass wall behind a recital hall stage meant that the new hall would be visually stunning and also acoustically difficult. Theatre Projects worked with the architect and acoustician to design and install equipment that seamlessly blends into the recital hall and accommodates adjustable acoustic devices that help shape the hall into an ideal environment for acoustic music. Collaborating with the project team, Theatre Projects solved the issue of operating a projector in a sunlit room by leading the project team toward MechoSystems, who provided acoustically neutral black-out curtains. A particular challenge during the design of Mixon Hall was providing video projection equipment that would be unnoticed by the audience. This was accomplished through an iterative design process. Similarly, Theatre Projects’ design, specification, and invisible installation of systems that controlled and hung acoustic devices accounted for the importance of maintaining the hall’s specific design aesthetic.

The arts center is combination of historic renovation and new construction and features a 566-seat multipurpose concert hall with seamlessly integrated lighting and rigging systems, as well as a 130-seat flexible studio theatre, rehearsal rooms, screening room, editing suite, production studio, and a full suite of support spaces. Completed in September of 2014. Services provided: Programming, concept design, theatre planning, performance equipment design and specification Please identify any specific project challenges and solutions related to the performing or visual arts component: The challenge was to find innovative ways to integrate the technology so it wouldn’t be noticeable. Theatre Projects accomplished this after many design iterations when entering the concert hall now, audiences can’t see any of the concert lighting as it’s integrated into the finish of the ceiling. Queen’s University asked the design team to find a way to integrate the existing architecture (a century-old distillery) into the new building and still provide the flow needed for a multi-departmental arts space. Theatre Projects’ work consistently addresses how these groups move through the building. Whether it’s a choir of 50 students going from the rehearsal space to the concert hall or students pushing pianos or TV cameras, the building can handle anything the users throw at it.

Boston Ar ts Academy Project Question 10
Q 10
HMFH offers unmatched experience in the evaluation, design, renovation and construction of academic environments for public clients.
Project Understanding
Expertise
The Boston Ar ts Academy provides an academically rigorous program paired with the visual and performing arts, a program that attracts a diverse student population from neighborhoods throughout the Cit y of Boston. Students, many of whom enter the school with below grade academic skills and come from low income families, move through the public high school’s academic program with a concentration in one of five areas — Theater, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Dance, and Visual Art — and graduate as artist-scholars. Students have the opportunity to excel and thrive in this environment, and as a public high school within the Boston Public School system, BAA achieves a 94% college acceptance rate and prepares students for future professional careers in the arts. Since its founding in 1998, BAA has worked hard to provide a performing and visual arts curriculum in the face of significant obstacles: Theater majors do not have access to a proscenium theater; dance students cannot perform on a stage; music students lack time and space for practice or recitals in comparison to peers at other elite arts high schools; and visual arts students are limited by low ceiling and space constraints. Dreaming big is not an easy thing to do in their current space. The opportunity for students at the Boston Arts Academy to reach their fullest academic and artistic potential is impeded by the existing facility.
The success of this project requires an expert team with the following experience:
This project presents an opportunity to advance both the arts and academics and showcase the extraordinary work happening in this school. The City of Boston needs to enter into this endeavor confident that the selected designer will create the most educationally-sound, cost-effective facility that will enhance student’s lives and the arts culture of the City. For over 45 years, this has been the focus of HMFH’s successful practice. HMFH Architects is uniquely qualified to transform the Boston Arts Academy into a vibrant school for the performing and visual arts with an architectural identity that expresses the creativity inside the building.

• In-depth understanding of BAA’s program • Proven track record with cost effective MSBA-Funded Schools • Depth of experience with tight urban sites and occupied renovations • Knowledge of construction and site selection within the City of Boston • The imagination to create a new identity for BAA
In-Depth Understanding of the Program The educational program of Boston Arts Academy must contain all the necessary components to meet the BPS and State requirements and district-wide standards. BA A is also par t of the Perkins Career and Technical Educational family; advances the inquiry-based, hands-on curriculum through a nationally-recognized STEAM lab; and the Design and Visual Communication curriculum is a Chapter 74 Program. The BAA program supports specialized concentrations in Theater, Dance, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, and Visual Arts, all of which require performance and support spaces. The school educates students with the goal of graduating into a professional career in any of the specialties offered by the school. Through our pas t experience with the Bos ton Ar t s Academy in a project to co-locate BAA with the Josiah Quincy Upper School, HMFH gained detailed knowledge about the needs of the school. Through this process, HMFH demonstrated our ability to meet the school’s specialized performing and visual arts needs within the MSBA guidelines.

Boston Ar ts Academy Project Question 10
Cost-Effective MSBA-Funded Schools
Boston Latin School Addition/Renovation
HMFH has been a prominent player in the world of MSBA, completing some of the very first projects with the new agency, such as Hanover and Wayland High Schools, and Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Historically, 85-90% of the firm’s work is for Massachusetts public schools, numbering well over one hundred major construction projects within the Commonwealth and nearly that many feasibility, programming and/or master planning studies. We understand the MSBA goals and processes for initial feasibility design as well as for final design and construction administration. HMFH has experience guiding projec t teams through the complexities of Chapter 149, and we have recently worked on eight CM at Risk 149a school projects. A review of MSBA data shows that HMFH’s schools have consistently been among the most economical built in the Commonwealth. Yet they are also consistently high performing, attractive, programmatically innovative, durable, and efficient to operate and maintain.
Urban Sites and Occupied Renovations
Beaver Country Day Visual & Performing Arts Center
HMFH brings to this project not only our record of success in designing schools for the City of Boston and working with MSBA for new and renovated facilities in communities throughout Massachusetts, but our particular focus on reconstructing existing schools on challenging urban sites. From renovations and additions at Boston Latin School to the East Boston Early Learning Center inserted into a corner of the McKay Schoolyard, each of these projects began with a careful initial feasibility study phase to identify the most cost effective option that offers the best value to the community to garner broad civic support. The Boston Latin School is located in an urban neighborhood, and as the oldest public high school in the country and the flagship high school of the Boston Public Schools, enjoys a strong academic reputation like BAA. Working with the Public Facilities Department and Boston Public Schools, HMFH carefully phased the occupied renovations and additions to expand the school’s music and visual arts, and added dining and library spaces.
HMFH also recently completed the multi-phase renovation of the 400,000 square foot Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School (CRLS) with its attached Cambridge War Memorial Athletic Center. Both of these projects were large, multi-story buildings on dense urban sites. The CRLS renovation included the restoration of the historic buildings and modernization of the entire facility, which has saved the City $500,000 annually in operating costs. Due to the swing space limitations, phased, occupied construction was planned for two academic years and three summers, with a portion of the school re-opening at the beginning of each school year. HMFH worked with the school department, the City, and MSBA to deliver the project on time and budget. Our successful experience in working out the real world logistics of these challenging projects will be of direct benefit to the Boston Ar ts Academy project.
Knowledge of Construction in Boston We have engaged in intensive community processes in neighborhoods throughout the City, and while the BAA project is not subject to BR A regulation by statute, community processes will still be required and a strong driver in the success of this project. With two completed public schools, a public high school and charter school currently in design and four significant charter schools completed in the City of Boston, and our work for the combined Quincy Upper School/Boston Arts Academy, HMFH is well versed in the regulations and nuances governing public construction in Boston. HMFH has also worked recently with the City of Boston and Boston Public Schools to analyze the feasibility of a number of downtown sites, including potential construction costs, and with many charter schools in searches for and analyses of sites. HMFH has facilitated open community engagement that brings stakeholders along with each step of the design process. From developing clear presentation materials, to communicating the process using engagement tools on a variety of platforms, HMFH excels at clearly conveying project goals to solicit and incorporate feedback into the design. We believe that early input helps develop consensus from a broad base of stakeholders and we lead meetings from initial visioning discussions to highly specific departmental and special program requirements.

Boston Ar ts Academy Project Question 10
Creating Identity This project presents a tremendous oppor tunit y to reimagine the Boston Ar ts Academy’s identity within its urban setting and to present the creative community inside the building to the outside world. Whether the final design direction is comprehensive renovation, renovation and addition, or new construction, the future building should showcase the student artists and the vibrant work they create. HMFH works with each client to develop an architectural language that expresses their values, culture, physical context, and vision for the future. The form and character of the building emerge from our understanding of the community and the inherent nature of the program and site. At Beaver Country Day School (BCDS), the insertion of an arts wing into a campus dominated by historic brick school buildings and a steeply sloping site presented two formidable challenges: how to handle the windowless facade of the new black box theater and how to provide access across a ravine. The solutions to these problematic conditions, a richly patterned brick wall for the black box theater and a series of accessible bridges, define the buildings character and have become iconic symbols of the campus. For the Tahanto Regional Middle and High School, the woodland setting and a commitment to sustainability led to an visual language that juxtaposed warm, natural materials with a modern, high-per formance facade system. As with other projects, some of the best elements of the building began as practical solutions, such as the wood-clad bench and overhang at the school entry that derives its shape from the auditorium above. For Cambridge Community Television, HMFH designed a new home that literally shows the inside operations to the outside world, with a live recording studio facing directly onto Mass Ave in Central Square. While the concept is simple, the technical challenges of inserting production studios into a former hardware store directly above the subway line were not. HMFH and our consultant team employed structural isolation strategies and multi layered walls to create a technologically advanced home for CCTV.
Ideas A performing and visual arts school should showcase the work students produce, with the building itself becoming a theater for students to present their ideas and creations to one another and to the outside world. The schools front-of-house should be highly visible and inviting to the public, acting as the hub of the school during the day and the reception lobby when the school becomes a performance venue. The performance and exhibitions spaces, where the artist presents him or herself to the world, should be at the heart of the school, visible to all, and central to each student’s day. And behind the scenes - the backstage, less visible and accessible to the public are the academic, production, and rehearsal spaces that foster experimentation and creativity.

Boston Ar ts Academy Project Question 10
Organizational Strategies Fur ther exploring the notion of “school as theater , we present here t wo organizational concepts to illustrate what we see as the critical design drivers for this building, with the understanding that during the feasibility study many complex issues will emerge and influence the ultimate design. Option 1 organizes the performance and exhibition venues along a grand staircase and amphitheater, with the stair providing access points to the various levels of the theaters. Wide landings at each level and tiered seating provide space for students to study, create, and perform alone or together. Activities within the larger spaces can naturally move into the landings for small group work and spontaneous gathering before and after classes.
1
Option 2 reuses one section of the existing three story school, taking advantage of the robust concrete frame structure for program elements that work well within the constraints of the current facility. An addition houses all of the performance and exhibition venues that, unlike general classrooms and administrative spaces, have highly specialized technical and space requirements that would be difficult and expensive to fit within the existing building. Clustering these components at a common entry creates a visible public presence for the school. The front-of-house and performance spaces can be readily accessed while the back stage and classroom areas are securely separated.
Creative Programming For BAA, arts is at the center of the learning experience and should be at the center of the school building. In both of the strategies we’ve described, the major public venues are organized around a central ArtSpace, modeled on an amphitheater in Option 1 and a theater in-the-round in Option 2. ArtSpace serves as both circulation and functional program areas, with activities changing over the course of a day and week. As the hub of the school, ArtSpace is the central gathering spot for students from all disciplines to eat and work together, a place for cross-pollination of ideas, impromptu performances and exhibition, and collaborative, hands-on projects. At times, ArtSpace hosts concerts or an all-school event, and during evening and weekend events, ArtSpace transforms into a theater lobby and gallery reception room.
2
The Boston Arts Academy delivers an education that is not easily fit into a standard high school building; however, it will need to work within the overall criteria of an MSBA project. With thoughtful adjacencies and appropriate adaptations, spaces that typically serve a single purpose can accommodate other uses when needed. For example, a dance studio can be used for the physical education curriculum, locker rooms can serve as theater dressing rooms, and the gymnasium, if fitted out with appropriate lighting and acoustic control devices, can double as a large format performance venue.

5.
Boston Ar ts Academy Project Question 10
Design for Arts Education A central tenet of BAA’s educational approach is to create hands-on experiences that directly prepare students for careers in their area of concentration, giving each student a range of opportunities to practice their art in professional settings. Ideally, musicians, actors, and dancers perform in a variety of venues—large and small, formal and experimental, directional and in-the round—where they learn the nuances of entering the stage, connecting with the audience, and projecting their voice. Similarly students pursuing design and technical aspects of the performing arts need access to professional equipment and technology as well as a variety of spaces that present different staging, lighting, and sound challenges. The spaces BAA needs to effectively deliver this program should replicate many aspects of professional theaters, but they also need to be good places to teach. There needs to be enough room for students to easily see demonstrations and work in groups; all areas, including theater catwalks and control booths, need to be universally accessible; and spaces and equipment need to be designed for safe experimentation by young and learning practitioners.

The visual and performing arts programs at Beaver Country Day School are critical components within the school’s curriculum, and HMFH designed the new visual and performing arts center to embody both the importance of the programs and the excitement they generate. The three-stor y facility features a black box theater outfitted with sophisticated, computer-controlled sound and lighting systems and flexible seating, plus a scene shop, costume storage and workroom, lighting storage, control room, green room, drama instruction classroom, and dressing rooms. The music program includes classrooms for choral, jazz, dance, and a chamber ensemble, plus practice rooms and storage. In the visual arts department, students have a photo studio and darkroom, and studios for 2-D art, print making, and computer graphics. Although the new Center is linked to the main academic building, it features a separate public entrance with a two-story, skylit lobby and gallery space, accessible by a bridge across the sloping site. The building fulfills both the technical requirements and the symbolic role on campus the School had envisioned. • • • •

The Town of Wayland hired HMFH to design a solution that would not only reflect the c o mmuni t y 's s t r o ng ac ademic tr adi tion, but enhance the performing and visual arts program. The complete reconstruction of this 1,100-student school includes an auditorium that is the home of Wayland's Little Concert Series, which brings in artists of both regional and national acclaim, and includes green rooms, choral and band music studios, stage crafts and visual arts all en suite. Anchored by an open courtyard that is heavily used by students, the campus includes a C o m m o n s B uil din g t h a t h o u s e s s t u d e n t dining, arts, and athletics, and an academic building. The school incorporates extensive sustainable measures, including an integrated daylighting system that combines ex ternal sunshades, internal light shelves and rooftop light monitors, all of which subst antially reduce electrical consumption. b. Brief Description of Project And Services (Include Reference To Relevant Experience)
The Visual and Performing Arts programs at Boston Renaissance Charter School are an essential part of a student’s academic experience. HMFH designed the building to celebrate the school's specialized curriculum in instrumental music, chorus, dance, martial arts, fine arts, visual arts and technology. The design involved the adaptive reuse of two buildings—a historic 70,000 sf historic heavy timber and masonry mill building built in 1889, and a 20,000 sf 1974 metal siding and concrete block warehouse building—as well as a 15,000 sf addition, housed on a six-acre industrial site. A flexible assembly space grows from opening partitions between the gym, cafetorium, and adjacent dance and music studios and can accommodate school-wide assemblies and public events. As the largest elementary school in Boston, educating 885 of the city’s most underserved students, the design follows the “school within a school” model by housing the Kindergarten students in the colorful, child-scaled wing, and adapting each floor of the mill building to provide classroom space for the three grade-oriented school communities. •

One of the first projects in the state to utilize the Chapter 149A public CM at Risk delivery method. Educates Boston's underserved students using a "whole child" approach to engage students in art, music, dance and physical education HMFH successfully delivered the 105,000 sf project on time within a 13-month construction period in order to meet the owner’s schedule needs to vacate their former home

b. Brief Description of Project And Services (Include Reference To Relevant Experience)
This phased occupied renovation of Cambridge’s 400,000 sf high school’s interconnected academic buildings was executed via a detailed phasing plan: the construction was sequenced so that only two academic years were impacted by the effort. The renewed building will also provide heat from cogeneration to warm pool water in the adjacent War Memorial building, another LEED Silver certified renovation designed by HMFH. • • • • •

Conducted a feasibility study through full design. Study addressed mitigating overcrowding through a combination renovation/new construction to meet local, state and national code requirements while also addressing programmatic needs. A series of collaborative workshops and meetings were used to develop site design that meets the goals and needs of the school community. Site design for two new pre-K through grade six elementary schools accommodating 850 students located on separate sites. The project meets Massachusetts CHPS standards, a new green initiative for the Commonwealth. Water saving strategies such as rainwater harvesting have been used so that the school will not have to rely on the Town’s domestic potable water system for irrigation. Site conceptual design documents associated with the new Student Life and Performance Center building. Improved connections to existing and new building entrances and intimate gathering spaces that take full advantage of the campus streetscape as an openspace amenity. Develop streetscapes to improve and expand the public and campus realm to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

Design incorporates custom torchieres to illuminate the newly restored, iconic John Singer Sargent murals in the historic Boston Public Library. The murals can be individually illuminated via wireless remote during tours of the space – without any visible light sources. Between tours, the lights fade to a low pre-set level, preventing damage to the murals. Natural light is supplemented by indirect flood lights in the skylight wells, while spot lights shine through the glass to illuminate the stairs for safety.
