PRESIDENT’S REPORT We certainly have had some severe cold fronts come through this winter! I hope everyone has been enjoying this freezing weather we have been seeing & maybe even got to play in some of the snow. As we move further through the cold months, remember to keep your trucks stocked with products for service heating, circulator pumps, thermostats, electronic controls, etc. Stay prepared to accommodate emergency services on broken pipes and mains as well. Being a step ahead is the best way to stay efficient and increase customer satisfaction!

A reminder to join us on the third Thursday of each month, 6pm-8:30 pm, from September to May for free educational classes! The February class will be hosted by Keith Oneill from Dellon Sales on Halo filters. Come and check out the latest filtration systems from this excellent instructor on Feb 19th 2026 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm, located at the Bouer PHC office: 1100 US Highway 9, Howell 07731. A quick update in reference to the State approval by the Department of Labor for our Approved Apprenticeship Program.

(A special thanks to the hard work and diligence of those members that did put in a lot of work in getting this approved; Tony Cacciotti, Mr Rodzinak, Mr Tinervia, Mr Bleiweis & Mr Italiano to name a few!) We are working on creating the budget and schedule for this program. More updates soon to come!

The league has been continuing efforts towards license enforcement throughout the state. To do your part in combatting unlicensed contractors, please create a record and report the grievance to the Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) as well as to the State League along with any available supporting photos/documentation. The board will get all completed complaints filed on behalf of members. You can find links for more information from consumer affairs on our website.

The expedited plan review, emailing inspection requests and electronic permit filing will be in progress in most towns by the end of year. We certainly hope for a smooth transition and will continue to report on this.

First Year Vice President Report Thanks to Atlantic plumbing supply. They have helped me on the membership committee with an ad at all there store asking all plumbers if there interested in joining us. In the near future they will show in stores that are closest to that association when and where they next meeting will be held. As always please reach out to me if I can help in any way. Thanks to my good friends at Somerset association. I attended there meeting hosted by Atlantic plumbing supply. The 2 gentleman were very helpful in telling us of the products the sell. Once again thank you to Joe, joe111 and Bob for there hospitality as always. I also went to see our members at Hawthorne association. They are not very happy with the state League as are a couple of other associations . They want to know what there getting for there dues. There not happy with the direction of our representation in Trenton and other items. I did tell them that a lot of things are done that most members don't know about. Steve Rodzniak and Vinny Tinervia attend meetings in Trenton and other locations in our behalf. I'm working with some senior members of the state League to give Hawthorne and the rest of you a decisive answer SOON. The last thing we can afford is negativity in our league! Second Year Vice President Report Hello Brother Plumbers, I hear members say that other plumbers in the association are their competitors. I disagree with that statement.

We are all here to help each other. Whether it’s asking a code question, needing a hand carrying in a boiler, borrowing a tool or needing a part on the weekend when the supply house is closed. This past week I called upon a few people in our association. I had a service call for a good client of mine come in when I was out of town. Instead of losing it to someone I don’t know, I forwarded it to a member of the association; he went out and got her heat going . He collected his fee and I kept my customer. I also called upon another member that had a bigger sewer machine than what I had to help clean a sewer main. We can all work together. There’s been several times I was busy and I had given jobs that I would not be able to get to in a timely manner, I referred them to members of the association that I knew were slow. This association is a great source of knowledge and talent to help you and your business, take advantage of this. Over the years I’ve worked on other members’ jobs to help them, and they have helped me on my jobs. Sometimes you need 4 or 5 guys on a job to meet a deadline. Where do you go to get help?

There’s over 800 members in our association…. So next time you need help or have a job you can’t do. Think of the guys in the association …

"Tea" By Nicholas Balik I’d like to share with you fellas about an encounter I had with a customer a short time ago. I’m sure most of you have an old lady or two that pay you with a smile and stale cookies. Weather or not they’re dumb like a fox, or just oblivious to the cost of things now days they usually get away with it. I got a no heat call the last week ( late February) from a store in Boonton. I’m not really a service plumbing company, and Boonton isn’t exactly around the corner from our shop. But I always figure out a way to take a no heat call. I hopped in the truck and headed out. Parking was rough, but I found a spot about 2 blocks DOWN the hill. I didn’t have an apprentice with me that day, and you all know I wasn’t going back to the truck to get anything for myself.

So I loaded up everything I could think of and hiked UP to the small store. I finally got all the way up and walked into a small tea and herb store. There was a tiny girl behind the counter who turned out to be the owner. She thanked me up and down for coming and apologized over and over for having me come out in the cold. I started troubleshooting, and was starting to get the ( god dammit ) feeling as I was getting to the end of the usual suspects. The last man standing was the gas valve, and we all know it’s never the gas valve. Luckily I do carry a universal gas valve in my truck … down the hill. So obviously before I walked what seems to always be 4 miles to the truck, I disconnected the valve and was going to test it when I accidentally hit the gas cock open. But there was no gas. You guys know you just smiled too because I didn’t have to walk to the damn truck! I put everything back together and went to tell Lauryn the problem was on PSEG. She obviously wasn’t as happy as I was but relieved the boiler was ok. I told her to call PSEG while I was still there in case they had any questions and that I would wait until she was off the phone. I could see she was desperate so I was a nice guy and went to see if there was snow plugging up the relief vent or anything obvious so she wouldn’t have to wait for a service crew. I immediately found the problem, the meter was locked out. I went back to awkwardly tell her and she had a cup of tea waiting for me and was still on hold. Eventually she opted to be called back and hung up. She asked how much she owed me and said she’d be fine I didn’t have to wait. I was about hand her an invoice and to tell her the gas was locked out when I noticed a pink paper on the counter where I was leaning. It was a notice of service interruption for failure to pay. At that point she’s kinda my buddy so I reached over and picked it up. I exclaimed like an a$$ I think I figured out the problem. She not only didn’t find that funny, she was clearly fighting back tears. I backpedaled and asked her why she didn’t just tell me the gas was off. She said they never actually shut it off before and just thought it was another threat. So now I’m stuck with this upset young girl who clearly needs some sort of help. I told her don’t worry about paying me the tea was delicious and we’re square. She kept insisting and I kept refusing. I kept stepping closer to the door to get out of what was now a very awkward situation. Then this 4’ nothing maybe 90lb little thing turned into one of the hosts from the view. She sternly told me with fire burning in her eyes she doesn’t need anyone’s help or charity! I swear to god I started dying laughing, she reminded me of my 12 yr old daughter trying to argue for more screen time. She instantly calmed down, smirked at me and put $20 in my tool bag. I was still kinda laughing and told her maybe if she sold coffee she would be able to keep the gas on, winked at her and left. The reason I’m writing about this is because that little hyena is also a small business owner just like us. Some of us have been in her shoes at some point. She was clearly struggling but refused to give up or accept help. At first I thought she was an idiot. The more I thought about it I’m pretty sure I’ve been in similar situations that seemed obvious from the outside but I just kept pushing through and didn’t want anyone’s help. I’ve always looked at all the trades as coworkers except the electricians obviously. Each trade needs the others in order to do our jobs, and when we work together we can build cities. Grumpy made me realize that it’s not just the trades.

There are tons of different small businesses in all types of industries that are coworkers. The printing company we get our shirts from, the mechanic that keeps the trucks going, the restaurants that host our State League meetings, we are all co workers and need each other to thrive. So the next time you want to click on "buy now" on your Amazon account or stop to Starbucks to buy some over-priced mud maybe look for a small business who would be happy to have a new customer instead and help your coworkers out.

“Trading Places” By Dimitri Checkur March sure is a Windy one! What a great Month for blowing bubbles, flying kites, or getting yourself some more Energy. That’s Windmills, Picasso! If you go whizzin’ out west on an airplane, you can look down and see just how much Wind we’re using in America these days. We now have Wind Farmers in 43 States. Those rusty old water-pumpers we had for cisterns and livestock years ago are gone with the Wind; replaced by massive, modern, three-bladed turbines to make us some Electricity today. The cows have finally come home!

March is a beautiful time for sailing too. Not long ago, we needed all that Wind to go places. We didn’t use crude oil for ships until around 1870 (nor did we have any of this oil and gas nonsense to heat homes either). Traveling was a breeze. We had Trade Winds, or…oars. I, myself, would rather sail a ship, than paddle it across to America, any day. Columbus used Trade Winds to discover his new world too!

Now, let’s put a Wind Sock on this story for a second to straighten out a small historic detail…a ‘Nina’ one. Columbus’s was on a freakin’ cruise! He frolicked around the Bahamas, and took jaunts to Cuba and Haiti, where people pay good moola each March to vacay! Explorer? He was on his own splendid, all-expenses, Royalty-paid, two-month Caribbean gallivant in some beautiful travel Weather…and we STILL give him a parade, and a day off in October? Try landing in Plymouth, Mass. during the ‘Little Ice Age’ of 1620! Those poor Pilgrims faced some brutal Wind and weather.

What a bilge-suckin’ trip they had! Now back to my Wind article.

Shipping these days is 'a smidge’ easier. We don’t need Trade Winds anymore. A truck drops nutmeg off to our front door, ‘sameday service from the West Indies,’ to sprinkle over lattes, as we order Plumbing parts on our phones! Yup, just a smidge. The cows are now in our kitchen, and we’re lounged out on an indented sofa with throw pillows, sipping joe and planning our next adventure back to Italy, with some soon-to-be bankrupt tour guide company.

We’ve struck Gold! Now, come down to earth with me and let’s really talk Wind.

To understand Plumbing principles, we search for passages too! Our Trade is all about exploration, and math helps us immensely. Daniel Bernoulli was another curious soul, who lived in Switzerland in 1734. Bernoulli was a ‘free-thinker’. He travelled in his mind, baby! He didn’t need to ‘Lift his Sails’ and leave home like Columbus (who historians say caught both Trade Winds, and thousand half-naked, tropical island girls to use for forced labor).

No! Bernoulli was a brilliant math and science guy, who lived in a Dynasty of Mathematicians. A whole Dynasty? I need another Wind Sock. My Father was a Mathematician…and one in any family is plenty. My entire life was pre-calculated, and I couldn’t win ONE, single argument growing up! If I had lived with a whole Dynasty of them, with Uncles freakin’ out on Easter because I didn’t know the angle of repose of a roll, or the free area of a vent in relation to the combustion make-up air of the kitchen stovetop, I would have gone

nuts. I would have been on that first frigid Ship to Massachusetts with Cap’n Jones.

Now, Plumbers use Math every single day. Forget Electricians, and their bird-killin’ wind turbines, or Carpenters who “cut it a bit proud” because they refuse to add eighths of an inch. We embody accuracy! Plumbers use sixteenths of an inch! We do Rolling Offsets, and use Taper Level Invert Reducers to keep pipe bottoms aligned! Right? I think we can all just agree right here, that of the ‘Blue Collars’, Plumbers use the most precision. Anywho, Bernoulli’s Principle is about Wind, and he published his classic Novel Hydrodynamica in 1738. What a name!

Fluids in Motion! Bernoulli’s Principle states that as air moves around an object, it creates different pressures on that object. That’s our outside Vent terminations for Plumbing Drains and Waste, and appliance terminations for Boilers and Water Heaters. Faster air means less static pressure, slower air means more pressure. Wind blowing across outside Roof Vent terminations creates suction, like pulling water out of toilet bowls, causing them to slosh or drop.

Conversely, calm winds increases air pressure in pipes, leading to higher water levels in bowls and traps. Now, carefully get off the roof and onto your ladder. Windward Side Vents can do the opposite, and push air directly into the building! Fluctuations! Then we have noise. Wind can cause unsecured pipes to rattle or clatter as air moves throughout the system.

Where do we search for answers? Thankfully, we have our own Maps! The National Standard Plumbing Code is a great one.

Check out NSPC Chapter 5 about Traps, or dive into Chapter 12 about Vents and Positive Pressures in Figure 12.2.1-B. Plumbers have many resources around us. Think about how Wind can affect your Roughs. Read the Wind article in the Fall 2016 Construction Code Communicator, or Trade thoughts with the building guys, and discover how each Person’s design, style and insulation affects your waste and water in those outside walls and terminations.

NSPC 8.1 will even guide you for using hangers, anchors and pipe supports.

So this March, as kids frolic off to some remote island to soak up Spring Break, take some quiet time for yourself. Grab a good book, and sit back in your own Captain’s Chair. Check Hydrodynamica out of the library (if it’s not already taken) and keep learning about liquids in motion, or sail off to one of the many Expos being held this Spring. A Plumber is the true Jack of ALL Trades…a Master of One. As we Travel this Earth, let’s commit to always uphold the values held by the many great brothers and sisters who Traveled before us. I’m grateful they cleared our way, so we can keep own own feet firmly planted on dry ground. One final Windsock? Put a Windsock on your head! Seneca said, “If one does not know to which port he sails, no Wind is favorable.” What a great Roman thinker. So… which way are you headed this Year?

The First Responders Behind the Walls A Message from the Triboro Master Plumbers Association When extreme cold temperatures recently swept through our region, plumbing professionals across our communities were tested once again.

Phones rang nonstop.

Frozen lines split.

Heating systems failed.

Basements flooded.

While most residents sought shelter indoors, master plumbers were mobilizing — loading trucks before sunrise, reorganizing schedules, redirecting crews, and responding without hesitation.

Moments like these remind us of something important: Plumbers are first responders.

We may not arrive with flashing lights or sirens, but we arrive with the tools, knowledge, licensing, and experience necessary to stabilize emergencies that directly impact public health, safety, and property.

When a pipe bursts in a home, it is not simply a leak. It is panic. It is water damaging ceilings, walls, electrical systems, and personal belongings. When a boiler fails in freezing temperatures, families lose heat. When plumbing systems shut down in commercial buildings, factories, warehouses, and mercantile spaces, operations stop — and livelihoods are affected.

By the time we step through the door, the situation is already stressful.

Before any repair begins, we must first assess the environment — not only the mechanical failure, but the emotional temperature of the room. Customers are often frustrated, overwhelmed, and facing unexpected financial strain. In that moment, we wear more than one hat.

We are technicians.

We are investigators.

We are communicators.

We are risk managers.

We are calm voices in chaotic situations.

A thorough plumbing response requires careful system isolation, damage assessment, and strategic planning to prevent further loss. Every decision we make matters — to the safety of the structure, to the health of its occupants, and to the financial outcome of the repair.

Emergency plumbing work is rarely convenient and almost never planned. These are not scheduled upgrades; they are sudden failures. And yet, as professionals, we must respond promptly, responsibly, and effectively — even when that means stopping other work, reallocating manpower, working extended hours, or responding during nights, weekends, and holidays.

This level of commitment carries responsibility — and it deserves recognition.

Plumbing is not merely a trade of fittings and fixtures. It is a profession that protects sanitation, ensures potable water delivery, maintains heating systems, and safeguards communities from preventable damage and health risks. During extreme weather events and other emergencies, the essential nature of our profession becomes unmistakably clear.

NFPA 211:14.2

Annual Inspection. Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year in accordance with the requirements of section 15.2.

Damaged or Deteriorated Liners. If the flue liner in a chimney has softened, cracked, or otherwise deteriorated so that it no longer has the continued ability to contain the products of combustion (i.e., heat, moisture, creosote, NFPA 211: 14.9* and flue gases), the liner shall either be removed and replaced, repaired, or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that will resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures appropriate to the class of chimney service.

Resolution submittals are due no later than the close of the March 2026 meeting for the 2026 NJSLMP Convention. Please don’t wait for the eleventh hour to submit. From the Code Corner Common Inspection Violations According to recent Construction Code Communicator reports and industry data, frequent field issues include: •

Improper Wet Venting: NSPC section 12.10 Recent updates to the NSPC have completely revised wet venting standards; failure to follow the new sizing and distance tables is a top cause for failed inspections.

•

Inadequate Mechanical Support: NSPC section 10.15.7 a through d. explains where they are required. NSPC section 10.15.7 b Water expansion tanks must be independently strapped or supported rather than hanging solely from water piping.

•

Backflow Prevention: as addressed in NSPC chapter 10 Missing vacuum breakers on exterior hose bibs and incorrect air gaps for dishwashers remain persistent issues.

•

Washing Machine Standpipes: NSPC section 9.3.4 Inspectors frequently flag standpipes that are shorter than the required 18-inch minimum.

•

Missing or improper nail plates: Remember the top and bottom nail plates must extend 2” below the top plate and 2” above the sole plate NSPC section 2.9.4 and in b where plastic or copper piping run through metal framing members it shall be protected from abrasion.

•

Sleeves for piping: NSPC 2.12 piping passing through concrete walls, floors, slabs and masonry walls shall be protected with sleeves for protection. Exception sleeves shall not be required for pipes passing through bored or drilled holes. Such holes shall provide a ½” minimum clearance around the pipe and any thermal insulation. Read a through e for other requirements.

Legislative Code Report The New Jersey State League of Master Plumbers (NJSLMP) is actively managing its 2026 Legislative and Code Report, vetting roughly 4,000 pieces of legislation spread across 67 pages of new and reintroduced filings. This massive volume often occurs at the start of a new legislative session as lawmakers reintroduce bills that failed to pass previously.

Recent Legislative Trends for Master Plumbers While the committee monitors all 4,000 bills, several recurring themes and specific proposals are likely at the forefront:  Licensing Exemptions: Efforts like Senate Bill 2148 have sought to exempt licensed master plumbers from certain electrical contractor business permit requirements, specifically for tasks like replacing electric water heaters and AC condensing units. 

Infrastructure & Lead Replacement: Major funding initiatives, such as the LeadFree Drinking Water Bond Act, authorize significant state bonds (up to $400 million) for lead service line and plumbing replacements, which directly impacts the workload and regulatory requirements for the profession.



Administrative Modernization: Proposed rules are moving toward allowing digital signatures and seals on electronic permit applications to speed up the approval process for plumbing contractors.



Utility Warranty Programs: New bills like S4478 may require public utilities to maintain warranty programs for appliances like furnaces and water heaters, potentially shifting how repair and replacement work is sourced.
