PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hello my fellow plumbers. Hope everyone is having a great summer! As September is coming soon, so is our apprenticeship program. Our committee is hard at work getting everything in order. Mr. Steve Bouer and the continuing education classes will be starting up in september also. Steve has the first meeting set up already. With the thanks once again to Atlantic Plumbing supply, I along with Dan O'gorman have joined Steve and have classes set up at Wales Darby Association in Warren, NJ we have set up class in October there (more details to follow on the website an constant contact). We're trying to accommodate more of you to bring your employees to these no charge classes. I'm trying to get more places lined up from the North, Central, and South of the state to keep everyone happy.

Christmas party is once again lined up for the beginning of December. As of this report I don't have all the details set up, but will in the next couple of weeks with hotel information. Keep an eye out for this also on the website. Convention committee is trying to finalize a hotel. We do have resorts booked as our last resort, but trying to find a newer venue. We have a lot of vendors all ready lined up. Many new ideas, possible apprenticeship competition free passes for your kids on the boardwalk, no charge of your spouse, all depends on how many vendors we can get to offset the costs. A lot of work, and I commend everyone who took on the convention in the past!!!!

I have alot of great guys helping me this. Vinny Tanervia, Larry Washington, Jimmy Becker, Brien McCloughlin, and now my buddy Pete Fizer of Rahway Association has put his hat into the ring also. I'm all ears, please dont hesitate to reach out to me about any concerns or thoughts. I was humbled last meeting to be asked to represent our State League at the IAPMO convention in L.A., California. I'm so looking forward to going with Ronnie and Dan, along with a few others. It's a great honor being your President and I promise you I will do my best in all areas of our league. Plumbing inspectors golf outing coming up in October. And last, but never least, I want to congratulate Mr. Dimitri Checkur on becoming plumbing inspector of the YEAR!! Great job by a truly great guy.

Through the years of being a member of the New Jersey State League of Master Plumbers, I have met a lot of people. Some turned out to be some really good friends that you can count on when you need help, have a question or spend the weekend riding through Pennsylvania riding quads with them. Second Year Vice President Report Hope all is well my fellow NJ Master Plumbers. I'm truly honored to be put in this position. My experience so far has been welcoming and enjoyable. Thanks again to Atlantic Mechanical for your hospitality and continual support. In our recent meeting, we were able to resolve pressing matters and come up with solutions. Problems will always come about, but as a team it's how we handle it. Continuing Ed is coming up, and the new code book has been issued. If there are any resolutions to be made, it's best to submit them early enough to have proper discussion on the subject at hand. We can only be a team if we play as a team!

President's Message Honoring Our Past. Building Our Future.

My story in the plumbing trade begins with my father.

After returning home from the Korean War, my dad went to work as an apprentice for his uncle at Esacoff Plumbing on First Avenue in Roselle, New Jersey, one of, if not the first, union plumbing shops in the state. He used to tell me stories about cutting cast-iron pipe with a hammer and chisel, threading brass and galvanized pipe by hand, and getting the job done without the power tools and equipment we take for granted today. It was hard, physical work, but those men took tremendous pride in what they built and in the trade they represented.

Years later, after I earned my own plumbing license, I teamed up with a kitchen and bath contractor. My dad said to me one day: “Hey, Bud, if you ever need a hand on the weekends, let me know.”

One Saturday, I finally took him up on his offer. As he walked behind my van, I noticed him looking inside. A few moments later, he asked me: “Hey, Bud, what’s that white pipe in the back of the van?” I said, “It’s called PVC.” He asked, “What do you use it for?” I told him, “Sewers, vents, and drains.” Then he looked at me and said: “So, let me guess—you glue it together?” I said, “Yes.” He just shook his head.

I often think about what he would say if he were still here today and saw PEX tubing with crimp connections, flexible gas pipe, and— God forbid—SharkBite fittings. I would never hear the end of it! But that is also what makes our trade so remarkable. It never stops changing. Every generation learns something new while building upon the work of those who came before us. The tools change. The materials change. The codes change. The technology changes. But the pride, skill, responsibility, and craftsmanship behind being a Master Plumber must remain.

That brings me to this incredible honor. Thank you for putting your trust in me. Serving as President of the New Jersey State League of Master Plumbers is one of the greatest honors of my life. I accept this responsibility with humility, gratitude, and a deep respect for everyone who wore this badge before me. The men who built this League laid a foundation as strong as the systems we install every day. They fought for professionalism, education, craftsmanship, integrity, and the recognition our profession deserves. Our responsibility now is to build upon that foundation.

Our industry continues to evolve. Technology changes. Codes change. Materials change. The way we operate our businesses changes.

But our values must never change. We must continue to mentor the next generation. We must support apprenticeship and encourage young people to enter our trade.

We must promote continuing education and give our members the knowledge they need to succeed. We must strengthen our local associations. And we must stand together whenever our profession needs a strong, united voice.

No one accomplishes anything alone. Just like a plumbing system, every part matters. Every local association matters. Every contractor matters. Every apprentice matters. Every member matters. Together, we will honor our past while embracing our future. Together, we will continue building an organization that the next generation of Master Plumbers will be proud to inherit.

As your President, I promise to work hard, to listen, to lead with integrity, and to always put the League first. I also know I would not be standing here without the people who have supported me throughout my life. Many thanks to my Mom, my sisters, my brothers-in-law, and my stepsons for always being there for me. To my beautiful wife, Maria—I love you. Thank you for your patience, encouragement, love, and support through everything. It means more to me than I could ever put into words.

And last, but never least, to my co-pilot, Mr. Jimmy F. Becker. Jimmy, you were the one who got me involved at Greater Newark. Look where we are now. I will never forget what you have done for me, your friendship, and your support throughout this journey.

And finally, I think back to my dad—the man whose stories about cast iron, brass, galvanized pipe, hammers, chisels, and hard work helped teach me what this trade is really about. The tools may have changed since his time. The materials may have changed. But the pride in being a plumber has not.

It is now our responsibility to pass that pride on to the next generation. Honor the past. Embrace the future. Protect the trade. And always take pride in the work we leave behind. Thank you once again for this incredible honor and for putting your confidence in me.

“Swinging Both Ways” By Dimitri Checkur I’ve had some crazy jobs in Life. The work wasn’t always easy, and pay wasn’t always great; but Money is only part of it. Some Jobs taught me new skills, or even a valuable Life-lesson, that I could always carry with me. I’d meet interesting People, with unique stories, and learn stuff about this ever-changing world around me.

I got this one Job, at 13 years old, as a busboy in Woodbridge, NJ. Friday nights, but only nights when they were were Short-staffed. A ‘No-Show’. It paid $9 bucks (nobody ever rounded up) and free Dinner. Sweet. Pete the Chef moved fast, and talked faster. The guy was a bit of a screamer too! He impatiently showed me around the joint, and stopped in his tracks at the Kitchen Door. He spoke slowly. “See THAT Door, Kid?” He stuck his annoying pointer-finger in the air, the one that he probably taste-tested your soup with, and said, “THAT Door swings both Ways!” He could tell I was confused; I had never stopped to talk about a Door before. I joked that the little inside Window looked A-Door-Able. Pete didn’t laugh! He said, very seriously, “You’re too short to see through THAT Window, Kid. If you can’t see them coming in Life, they can’t always see YOU! Some Doors in this World are more dangerous than others!” He quickly wrapped up the tour of HIS kitchen, and I went to work. Weeks later, I saw a Waiter wear a whole tray of Soups and Salad Dressings down his Shirt and into his belt at that same Doorway. Hot AND Sticky! Ouch! It etched the ‘Swinging both Ways’ thing into my memory forever, and taught me to always carry an extra change of Work clothes!

It’s 45 years later, and what a different World it is Today. I’m currently a Plumbing Inspector, and Contractors like me about as much as Waiters liked Pete the Chef. My job is to read Plans, look at Plumbing and Mechanical stuff all day, and Cite Codes. I have to act Professional, so these days, I would never tell a story about Swinging both Ways at work. Someone misses the Word ‘DOOR’ in my Story, and the Administrator could hit me with the Door to Unemployment! So I keep my thoughts to myself, quietly inspect an occasional Commercial Kitchen, and smile on the inside whenever I see that little Door-Window. I’ve waited a long time though, to hold my own Soup-Stirrer in the air and talk Double-Swinging Doors. I finally got my chance Yesterday!

Let me clear the air first…to the Boiler Room. We all know Hot air rises. The speed at which an Appliance drafts is affected by vent size, length, wind, nozzle GPH, the room that it’s in, yada yada. To help it out, an Oil-fired Hot Water Boiler has a Barometric Damper…or a draft hood, stack damper, draft control, vent damper; whatever kids wanna call it these days. That Oil-fired Damper only swings ONE way…IN. A Barometric Damper adds air as needed, lowers high draft rates, and closes when it’s not needed, saving you Money! Partially Opened or Closed. Simple, right?

Now, Sparta is experiencing a Gas Revolution! We have three or four NG Conversions a day. Everyone is ‘transitioning’ in their own way…it’s not for me to judge. Just like Oil, ‘different fuels have different rules’; like the required drip leg, sediment trap, dirt leg, or drip tee on our gas line. Two Plumbers can’t even agree on what name to even call a part, let alone discuss how the part actually works. Anyway, I look for a few, simple things on an Oil to Gas conversion…like a Blocked-Vent Switch, a capped or plugged Oil-line until the piping is removed per the NFPA, and a Double-acting Damper if the Damper is still required. Double. The ‘Swinging both Ways’ door is a very small, but critical detail. Left undone, it can put a Damper on your mood alright…like severe asphyxiation or CO. The Plumbing Professional usually replaces the Damper, or removes the stops so it swings freely. It’s for the Manufacturer and Plumber to decide.

Yesterday, someone became slightly ‘unhinged' about their own little door on TOP of the Damper. The Contractor said, “Why the Orange Sticker! An Oil Damper already Swings BOTH Ways.” I looked confused, so he pointed up, “See THAT small window on top? It opens OUT. A Double-Acting Damper!!”

I said, “No, It’s a Single. They both close on a Downdraft.” He said, “Nooo. That Top opens OUT and the Bottom swings IN. In AND Out!” I said, “Look.

Oil Dampers close completely on the Bottom AND top on a Downdraft or a Blocked Flue. Gas is fast! Positive pressurized gas vapor can drop quickly. If un-combusted GAS spills down that vent, past your closed Damper and into your New Burner Gun, it could create a Life/Safety Asphyxiation Hazard or Explosion! A gas Damper goes In and Out, to ‘provide for the ready escape of flue gases from the appliance.’ The BOTTOM is the Double-acting part.”

HE swung wide! “Answer me this…why have I NEVER ‘Afixiated’ anyone?” I was stunned! I had waited 45 Years for MY own Pete the Chef moment, and I took it! “See THAT Door,” I said, proudly pointed MY own Soup-Stirrer in the Air, pausing for affect! “First of all, the word is ASS-fixiated. If you A-FIX-iated THAT Door, the Boiler would now have a Double-Swinging Damper, we could all sleep easy, and still wake up! Secondly,” I said, slowly adding another finger to the mix, “A Master Plumber would never consider the death-free install as positive proof of perfect Plumbing!” He thought about HIS ‘little Window’ again, then transitioned to his real concern…finances. It’s ALWAYS financial. “Now, how am I supposed to go back and double-check every Damper I’ve ever converted?” I was getting light-headed. I said, “We all got a Job to do. You just send me your exact Damper and Burner Gun Specs, and I’ll look into YOUR little Window later, in Writing.” I’m sure I’ll be waiting for a code-approved, single-acting gas damper design for the next 45 years.

Each Trade has different moving parts. Even if Plumbers don’t think alike, we should all at least look alike…Inward and Outward. We should have Back and Forth discussions often. That double-acting door to the Kitchen with a Vision Panel Window has been in the IBC since I was a kid. Section 1010.1.2.2.

As for our own free-swinging Doors for Gas Draft Regulators? IRC G2427.12. Remember what I said in the beginning? Money is only part of it. Don’t be a ‘No-Show’ at work. Each Day, before we turn our very first Crescent, Spanner, C-wrench, Shifter (Australian), Knuckle Buster, or whatever you kids call your Adjustable Wrench these days, think Life/Safety. Small changes we make on Equipment can sometimes affect us in big ways. Thinking about converting to Natural Gas? Think about why a gas damper would want to Swing both Ways. In 1775, a Scottish watchmaker named Alexander Cumming was awarded the first patent ever issued for a flushing toilet. Cumming wasn't a plumber — he built clocks and organs for the Duke of Argyll — but he solved a problem that had stumped every water closet before his: the smell. His patent describes a bend in the outlet pipe that stays permanently full of water, which he called, in the blunt language of the 18th century, a “stink trap.” Empty the bowl and the bend refills itself, sealing off whatever waited below. It is, without exaggeration, the single most-copied invention in the history of our trade. You have at least a dozen within arm's reach of wherever you're reading this.

Cumming didn't know why the trap worked, not really. He and every sanitary engineer for the next hundred years believed foul air itself carried disease — breathe the stench of the sewer, and you'd sicken. We've told the story in this column before of how that theory turned out to be wrong; it's germs in water that spread cholera and typhoid, not the smell of the drain. But here's the detail worth sitting with: they built the right device for the wrong reason, and it worked anyway. A trap seal doesn't just block odor. It blocks methane and hydrogen sulfide, both genuinely dangerous in enough concentration, and it closes the one straight pipe a home has running to a sewer main full of whatever's down there. The Victorians were confused about the mechanism and correct about the stakes. That's a pretty good description of half the trade, honestly — you don't always need to understand the microbiology to know the seal has to hold.

Two to four inches of standing water, held in a curve, is doing more work than almost anything else in the house. It's cheap. It's dumb, in the best engineering sense of the word — no moving parts, nothing to wear out, nothing to charge a battery. And it fails constantly, which is where the fun starts.

The Vacation Stink. A family comes home from three weeks down the shore, walks into the guest bathroom, and calls you in a panic convinced they have a dead animal in the wall. Nine times out of ten it's the guest bathroom's trap seal, quietly evaporated to nothing while nobody flushed it, now sitting open to the drain line like a chimney. The fix costs about four minutes and a pitcher of water. The phone call to explain that fact to a customer who's already Googled “sewage in house” costs considerably longer.

The Shore-House S. Older bungalows down the coast still turn these up with some regularity — a straight drop under the kitchen sink, no horizontal run, no vent behind it, installed back when “it drains, doesn't it” passed for an inspection. S-traps siphon themselves dry by design: water leaving the fixture drags the seal water right along with it on the way down, same principle as sucking the last inch out of a milkshake. No vent to break that suction, no seal left behind. It works fine for exactly as long as nobody uses the sink, which is to say, it does not work.

The Bell Trap. A cast-iron relic you sometimes find under an old basement floor drain, sealed by an inverted cup instead of a water column. Charming.

Also a magnet for debris, and one careless swipe of a mop bucket away from getting lifted right out — at which point the seal is not reduced, it's gone.

The Double-Trapped Disposal. Somebody, at some point, “fixed” a slow disposal drain by adding a second trap downstream of the first. It drains slower, traps air between the two seals, and turns every cycle into a small percussion event. More traps is not more protection.

None of these people were trying to hurt anyone. They were trying to stop a smell or solve a drainage problem with what was on hand, which is exactly what Cumming was doing in 1775 — the difference is two and a half centuries of us learning, the hard way, which fixes actually hold.

What New Jersey asks of the bend Our plumbing subcode, adopted under N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.15, doesn't use the word “S-trap” anywhere in its text. It doesn't need to. Chapter 5 sets the trap seal itself — no less than two inches, no more than four, self-scouring, level — and Chapter 12's venting requirements do the rest: every fixture trap needs a vent sized and positioned to keep pressure equalized on both sides of that seal. A straight vertical drop with nothing behind it to break the suction fails that standard by definition, whatever shape the trap happens to be. Bell traps and traps that rely on moving parts are named outright and prohibited. The code doesn't ban a shape so much as it bans the failure mode — a seal that can be pulled dry by ordinary use.

That's the whole job of a license, when you get down to it. Anybody can bend a pipe into a curve. Reading a code book and knowing why the curve has to sit where it sits, sized the way it's sized, vented the way it's vented — that's the two and a half centuries of accumulated failure that a licensed plumber carries into every rough-in, whether the customer ever thinks about it or not. The trap under the sink looks like the simplest fixture in the house.

It's also the oldest promise in the trade, still being kept, one two-inch seal at a time.

Annual Inspection. Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year in accordance with the requirements of section 15.2.

Damaged or Deteriorated Liners. If the flue liner in a chimney has softened, cracked, or otherwise deteriorated so that it no longer has the continued ability to contain the products of combustion (i.e., heat, moisture, creosote, NFPA 211: 14.9* and flue gases), the liner shall either be removed and replaced, repaired, or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that will resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures appropriate to the class of chimney service.

Size. The chimney or vent shall be resized as necessary to control flue gas condensation in the interior of the NFPA M1801.3.1 chimney or vent and to provide the appliance, or appliances served, with the required draft. For the venting of

oil-fired appliances to masonry chimneys, the resizing shall be done in accordance with NPFA 31.

IAPMO Classes IAPMO is hosting 2 backflow classes in New Jersey between now and the end of the year. IAPMO provides training and certification in accordance with the ASSE 5110 Backflow Tester Professional Qualification Standard.

This consists of a 40 Hour Class (Monday through Friday) – and involves a written and practical exam on the final day of the week.

We have a class taking place at Advantage Fire Protection in Pennsauken, NJ from Monday 10/12 – Friday 10/16 OR a class scheduled at General Plumbing Supply in Piscataway, NJ from Monday 12/7 – Friday 12/11.

Classes are 8 AM – 4 PM. The cost for the full week class is $1,100.

Certification is renewed every three years and involves 1 day (8 Hours) of training/education and completion of the written and practical exam to maintain your certification. Re-Certification classes are currently $550. To register for classes, please visit www. iapmolearn.org and create a profile.

From there, click Browse Catalogue and select Backflow Prevention Institute > ASSE 5110 Backflow Tester Class and Exam.

Select New Jersey, and you will see the upcoming classes available and be able to register online for the class of your choice.

Website & Social Media Report — August 4, 2026 I wanted to provide an important update regarding the New Jersey State League of Master Plumbers website and ask for everyone’s cooperation as we continue improving our organization.

Our website is being updated to ensure all information is current, accurate, and easy for members to access. As part of this update, we have implemented new automated technology to simplify the membership process.

When a new member joins through the website, they will be asked a few simple questions: 1. Are you a Master Plumber?

2. Are you licensed in the State of New Jersey?

3. Which local association would you like to belong to?

Based on these answers, the system will automatically direct the membership information to the appropriate local association secretary so the membership application can be processed promptly and efficiently.

To make this system successful, we need the assistance of every local association secretary. Please provide updated information for your association, including: •

Upcoming events and important announcements.
