PRESIDENT’S REPORT Fellow plumbers & professionals, I hope everyone has been enjoying the brisk weather we have been seeing. As we move further into the colder months, remember to keep trucks stocked with products to service heating, circulator pumps, thermostats, electronic controls, etc. Being prepared is the best way to limit downtime & costs and to sell additional service on jobs, no matter the season. A reminder to join us on the third Thursday of each month, 6pm-8:30 pm, from September to May for free! November's class was a great success and we saw a few familiar faces. Last month’s class was hosted by Resido/Honeywell & Venco Sales; an excellent instructor - Bob Bruno. He went over hydronic heating systems at the Bouer PHC office on Route 9 in Howell. Once again, a great thanks to Our VPs Vincent Tinervia & Mark Bleiweis for their effort and continued support with these classes. Our lobbyist, Sam Weinstein, along with the PPAG, Steve Rodzinak and Thomas Pitcherello are still diligently working to address concerns with our legislation regarding the water heater bill, mandating time windows for inspections (item no. 5130), and to establish an approved SLMP apprenticeship program. The paperwork process is in the works with the D.O.L. for the league approved apprenticeship program. Our state league is also putting forth great effort towards licence enforcement through-out the state. First Year Vice President Report UPS and DOWNS. I've had a few the past few weeks. My first up was the birth of my grandson Luca Tango. 7lbs. Lil brother of his sisters Kaia and Lucianna. My first down was the death of a good friend. We played softball together and many many rounds of golf together.Rest in Peace Robert Pinkels of Union NJ. My other downs were to the Smithville inn for our state League meeting.(195.6) Miles round trip. Eventful meeting alot of things in the works. Next down was to the State League of Master Plumbers Christmas party at Resorts (182) miles round trip. What a blast! Dj had us up and dancing, good food and drinks. Great job once again to Liz and Billy Sherman. My next down was to Southern Oceans monthly meeting (140.2) miles round trip. Thanks to Mr Barry Ward there president and Gary Italiano for the invite. Weil McLain put on a great break down of there wall hung boilers and water heaters. Than the next night I was off to Northern Ocean Christmas party at B2 bistro in Toms River (119.4)miles round trip. Thanks to Sergio and Chris for the invite. Had the pleasure of sitting with our president Mr Steve Bauer and his wife, Vinny Tanervia and his son and girlfriend. And Steve and his wife (sorry I didn't get your last name lol) and my last venture was to Monmouth Association meeting (97.4) round trip miles. Thanks to Big George, Gary,Steve,Larry,Mike all at there head table for the invite. It turned out to be there Christmas party. Amazing food and drinks. Had a blast like always with Ralph Marina and everyone else Thanks again. All within 8 days. My ups were doing something I really enjoy, and required by all the vice presidents to go to other associations and meet, discuss there concerns and interests and have fun! That's what life is all about a Brotherhood of friends. Hope everyone had a great holiday and Have the best New Year! Fourth Year Vice President Report Hello my Brothers and Sisters December’s New Jersey State League of Master Plumbers meeting in Smithville Inn was a great success, with a strong turnout and an enjoyable atmosphere. We were proud to welcome the Mercer Association into the State League for the first time as a new local, marking an exciting step forward for our organization.Thank You Tony Cacciotti for all your effort and hard work! Sam Weinstein provided an update on pending legislation,in reference to the electric water heater bill noting that it will not be presented until the new governor is in place. While he stated that we have a good chance of getting this passed, it’s something we’ve been hearing for nearly 20 years—so for now, all we can do is remain hopeful and patient. As always, Smithville delivered with its festive winter atmosphere and holiday spirit. The following Saturday, we hosted our annual New Jersey State League of Master Plumbers Holiday Party, with a turnout of approximately 85 people. It was great to see many new faces, though we missed some longtime attendees who couldn’t make it this year—we look forward to having them back next year as we aim for 100 or more. The food was fantastic, the DJ was outstanding, and the Secret Santa exchange was, as always, a big hit. Overall, it was a wonderful night celebrating the brotherhood and sisterhood of our NJSLMP family. We look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting in January. Department of Labor representatives at January 15th meeting Our President has invited our Department of Labor (DOL) representatives, Nicole Field and Michael Blatt, to our next State League meeting on January 15th in Clifton. Nicole and Michael have been instrumental in the League's apprenticeship program approval process and are eager to meet with prospective employers of future plumbing apprentices. Once they both get approval from their supervisors to attend, they'll let us know. This is an excellent opportunity to engage non-members, showcase the valuable work we do, and boost membership. If you are a current member who may employe a plumbing apprentice this is a great time to attend this meeting. Everyone should be ready to invite local licensed plumbers in and around the Clifton area. Prospective members can find out about apprenticeship at the presentation before the meeting and be reminded their first year as League members is FREE for the league per-capita. Keeping in mind we await the DOL reps to confirm their attendance. The Apprenticeship Program committee is looking for Plumbing instructors, (or folks who would want to be an instructor), to help when we are ready to start classes. “Sooner or Schrader” By Dimitri Checkur Testing. One, Two, Testing. Is this thing even on? I’d like to announce that Sussex County is still in the midst of a Gas Explosion! I’m not sure what you other State League Chapters are up to, but we’re deep in the trenches up North. I’ve spoken about it often, but it’s gotten even crazier! We’re tearing up all our roads, scrappin’ Lp and Oil tanks, and converting anything in the house we can get our wrenches on. Yellow, Grey, and Black Pipes are everywhere, so ride on up here, as fast as you can, and join in on the fun. Be sure to top off the tank first, and always check your tire pressure before taking a road trip. Thankfully, August Schrader made tire-tending easier for us all. Schrader means Tailor in German, but this Schatzi was no suit. August was an Inventor! Like so many other great immigrants, he sailed to Manhattan (in 1840), during which time he had about 5 weeks to think…so he invented Air Pillows and Life Preservers. Both are perfect for seafaring. When he got to Ellis Island, August had his rather long ‘check in’, and probably slept on a triple-tiered, dormitory-style bed for several nights. He was ‘Tired’ and his ‘slightly-used’ immigration mattress felt rather ‘Flat’. As he drifted off to sleep, August thought to himself, “Perhaps you have been neglecting the all-important matter of tire-pumping and air-testing because of the exertion it involved.” Who even thinks like that…neglecting the all-important matter? If you don’t believe me, you can read it yourself on the original Schrader Valve package. Anyway, that night, August started dreaming, “Some day, I shall invent the greatest safety tool a Plumber has ever known…the Schrader Valve.” And so he did! Eureka!! August’s simple fill-gadget would revolutionize Plumbing. Testing. One, Two, Testing. Forget about your moped for a moment…how would you feel if you filled your tank and tires and headed up to see me, only to find out your past State League Secretary had been ‘blowed up’ on a Gas Conversion inspection? Crummy, right? Then, what if you dropped in (uninvited) to comfort my Wife over coffee (always on at our house) and it was 18 Degrees inside because our leaky baseboard heat was air-bound? We actually have ‘Forced Air’, but it doesn’t fit our story (it’s MY least favorite type of heat, but the Wife ‘Forced’ me into buying HER dream house, without any baseboard). Anyway, you’d be ticked-off, right? Now, what if you were sooo worried about MY injuries, that you hit MY liquid consolement cabinet, slept over on MY uncomfortable spare-room, immigration-style Mattress (again, uninvited), and woke in the morning with a touch of Mold Inhalation from concealed domestic piping leaks, because I can’t solder? You’d be furious, right? Well, fear not my Friend. August gave our entire Trade the Schrader Valve; the greatest tool we’ve ever had for ensuring safe, sound Plumbing installed by inept Americans. It’s just Two simple Steps. Testing One: Test the Material. All of it! Some Wacknut, and I still can’t prove who, apparently spewed out, “You don’t need to test Gas Pipe under 6 feet.” Why 6’?! I have no Clue. I just know that I’m still searching for this Nimrod…and for good reason. In the past four Weeks, we’ve found more leaks than ever in less than a Foot! There have been Tees, 90’s, CSST Adapters, and Sand holes in 12”, 6” and Shoulder Nipples too. That’s a lot of liability in a little Pipe! What I truly believe his Mentor told him was, “You can stop worrying about testing Gas Pipe when you’re YOU’RE 6 Feet…under.” The Fool heard exactly what he wanted, and started his own Business! 6 Foot Under P&H. Others even stretched it! Someone threw out ye old, “I’ve soap-tested anything under 10 feet for years” again yesterday. I calmly responded, “Oh really, Mr. Bubbles? You’ve got 60 potential Shoulder Nipples in a 10’ pipe, and an awful lot of Sand holes in your story. Get with the times!” We were once Professionals, and 1/2 the Gauge was our unwritten Brotherhood Code. Can you give us just 50%? Or perhaps the oxygen you saved testing Pipes can now be used to fill Fire Department tanks for Search and Rescue. In fact, I just spoke to a FD Volunteer this Week on a Gas Conversion for his own Home. The Fella said they had Four Gas leak calls in the past 5 days. Four! So tell me again, Jack LaLanne, that losing a pound a day on a Gauge feels great? As long as you still have a meager 3 PSI left when an inspector arrives, IRC 2417.4.1 feels satisfied too!? Ay Caramba. Now, Testing Two: Air test yourself! Here we go. We said IRC G2417.4.1. Fuel piping installations. There’s NSPC 15.6 Water Supply (minimum 80 PSI; d. Air pressure prohibited for plastic. Exception: Consult Pex Manufacturer’s Instructions for air-testing plastic), IRC M2101.10 Hydronic Piping (100 psi), and ISPSC 311.9 Pool Piping (25 PSI Hydrostatic). We’ve got lots of reading to do! Oh, and again, NEVER use compressed air to test Plastic Pool piping. ISPSC 302.7. You want some science? Air-Testing PVC is a Life-Safety issue because it compresses and stores Energy the same exact way a Bomb would! Now, could you help me solve my Energy mystery? How come the Pool Boy has endless Energy to unknowingly fill all that PVC to 25 psi with just air, but a Master Plumber is just too exhausted to fill his gas piping past 3 lbs? That’s embarrassing! If filling a Schrader involves too much exertion, blame August. Tell him that his precious invention is useless for the guy who can’t hold his hose longer than 15 Seconds. Anyway, Hydrostatic on a Pool, and NSPC 15.4.1a.1. for DWV. That’s 10’ of Head (or through the roof). Don’t even get me started on the hose-holder who says, “I only fill MY Drainage to an upstairs Tub overflow on a rough.” There’s a Lavy in that room…and a ‘V’ in DWV! To the Tub? You would have NEVER had the Energy to carry a 400 pound Cast-Iron Beauty over the threshold in the 1800’s. So this January, think about August. For those who drive a car or ride a bike, chances are you’ve held his Schrader Cap this past year. Plumbers should hold ‘em every day…until we lose the tiny thing and buy our next faulty Gauge. You couldn’t design the cap in a nice Yellow or Red? Perhaps YOU neglected the all important matter of how hard it was going to be for Plumbers to see after working in the dark for 40 Years. Nobody’s perfect; but most genuinely, thank you August. You sailed on over to start your new Life, and gave us Safety. What a great mind you had! You too Emile Beliner. You immigrated from Germany, and invented the Microphone for us in 1877. We can now use that to get our message heard! It’s a brand New Year, so let’s start off on the Right Foot. Are you with Me? Testing One, Two, Testing. Is this thing even on?

Apprenticeship Training Program Report The paperwork known as ETA-671 program and apprenticeship agreement form for the Leagues approval is still in the works, since government reopened, they are backed up. Our department of labor representative will update us as soon as its ready. They are eager to work with us and help us in anyway they can. On the committee for this email viewers, the recent Presidents report in the pipeline said part if what Thomas Pitcherello is working on is this DOL paperwork, point of information he has nothing to do with our paperwork and us working with the DOL regarding the leagues apprenticeship program approval. I'd like to remove the above section if asked to read my report on the floor during tonight's meeting. Annual Inspection. Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year in accordance with the requirements of section 15.2.
Damaged or Deteriorated Liners. If the flue liner in a chimney has softened, cracked, or otherwise deteriorated so that it no longer has the continued ability to contain the products of combustion (i.e., heat, moisture, creosote, NFPA 211: 14.9* and flue gases), the liner shall either be removed and replaced, repaired, or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that will resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures appropriate to the class of chimney service. Size. The chimney or vent shall be resized as necessary to control flue gas condensation in the interior of the NFPA M1801.3.1 chimney or vent and to provide the appliance, or appliances served, with the required draft. For the venting of
oil-fired appliances to masonry chimneys, the resizing shall be done in accordance with NPFA 31.

From the Code Corner In last month’s Pipeline article from the Code Geeks, we misspoke regarding the frequently asked questions. The article stated that when a permit is applied for the installation of a chimney liner, a chimney verification form is required. This is not the case—it is recommended, not required. The reason the form is recommended is that it provides all the pertinent information needed to verify that the liner is properly sized. It includes details such as the type of equipment, BTUs connected, and fuel type. We apologize for any confusion this error may have caused. A question was also asked regarding whether you can wet-vent a toilet with a washing machine discharge waste line. According to the National Standard Plumbing Code (NSPC), under Section 12.10 (Wet Venting), wet venting (the practice of using a single drainpipe as both a waste and a vent) is permitted only within properly arranged bathroom groups. The only fixtures allowed to serve as a wet vent for a water closet are lavatories (bathroom sinks) or bathtubs/showers. Additionally, using a washing machine discharge line raises concerns related to suds zones. The code language clearly states that a wet vent must originate from a bathroom fixture—not from a laundry standpipe, floor drain, or any other non-bathroom group fixture. Therefore, a washing machine discharge line cannot be used to wet-vent a toilet.
