PRESIDENT’S REPORT Fellow plumbers and professionals, I hope everyone is enjoying some of this beautiful weather we have been having. I personally have a great time during the fishing season. It is time to fish for fluke and we should be seeing striped bass working their way down our shore soon! Any spare time I have these days, I enjoy the peace & serenity of the ocean waters; schools of passing dolphins & the occasional whale off of the mansaquan inlet sharing our beautiful coast line.

Keep in mind we are still seeing a lot of rain and should expect it to keep coming; so a reminder to stay stocked with sump pumps, check valves and accessories. For those who do AC work keep capacitors, contactors, refrigerant, and condensate pumps on hand. Customers are going to be starting their AC systems so it is good to have your self stocked and avoid wasting time traveling to and from supply houses.

May's free educational class was the last until September. This Past class on May 21st was hosted by Centrotherm.

It was a very informative, small class. The Instructor was Dylan Valkonis, a very knowledgeable guy in the industry, on approved Flue gas materials. He did a great job with an elaborate overview of the products they manufacture and support.

Just quick updates for everyone: The Department of Labor has authorized the Approved Apprenticeship Program. We have a great team of our members working together on the Applications and the scheduling which are being processed and approved, more information to be posted on the website as soon as available. By the end of the year, we expect most towns to be implementing the updated electronic filing/inspection system Updates to come in on that front as we know more. The State league has hired a marketing company to assist in building the league’s member portfolio.

A reminder; the league has been continuing efforts towards license enforcement throughout the state. To do your part in combatting unlicensed contractors, please create a record and report the grievance to the Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) as well as to the State League along with any available supporting photos/documentation. The board will file all completed complaints on behalf of members. You can find links & more information for DCA on our site.

First Year Vice President Report WELL HERE WE GO! First and foremost I want to thank all of you for allowing me this great honor as this year's president .I look forward on taking on the responsibility as your president. As I talk to former president,s they all had a goal in mine during there term. I have a few I'll be pushing for. Moving forward with the social media,s plans on our continued attempt to gain membership. Everyone should have seen it already on there phone or computer. If you haven't maybe we don't have your correct phone number or email address. Let me know, I'm all ears. The issue with non licensed entities is another major concern. We have been talking to people to help us with this situation, hopefully we can enforce our already approved legislation. And of course the on going issue with the water heater bill. I've switched the liability and workers comp insurance from epic to NJ manufactures for the executive board. Also getting our bond switched over also. Approximately saving us $1000.00 so far!! So that's a start. I promise you,ll have my full attention on any and all needs. My first meeting is in Mercer county, I hope to see you and say hello. Second Year Vice President Report Hello Brother Plumbers, It’s that time of the year again .. I would like to thank Steve Bouer for a job well done this year as President.

With the help of all the vice presidents and all the committee chairman we got a lot accomplished this year !

We now have an approved Apprenticeship training program with the Federal Department of Labor and a nice group of students enrolled all ready. (That’s amazing) We also hired a marketing company to help reach out to get new members through all types of social media and website. I know Mark Bleiweis will keep this ball rolling when he is president .

There’s a new addition to the New Jersey Code communicator spring addition that came out late last month.

Fourth Year Vice President Report Hello everyone, We had an incredible trip to Spain last week. It was my first time there, and I have to say—the sights were absolutely amazing, the food was outstanding, and spending time with the brotherhood of our fellow plumbers made it even more special. It was truly a great experience all around.

After Spain, we had already planned Jaxson’s spring break trip to Fort Lauderdale, so we came straight down here to continue the family time.

Unfortunately, I was planning to be back in time for April’s meeting, but our flight was canceled last minute. We had checked before heading to the airport and everything showed on schedule, but upon arrival, we found out it had been canceled.

So, here I am—stuck on the beach in Fort Lauderdale. Could be worse!

“Here Comes the Sun” By Dimitri Checkur Ahhh, Summertime. Longer days, and fresher Vegetables. I can’t get enough of this Sunny Weather! George Harrison even wrote a Hit Song about it. They say he played Hooky from a boring business meeting to write “Here comes the Sun.” I like Hooky…and I like the Sun. The Sun can be a little tough on our Vent Terminations though. In July and August, things start to get heated.

Tensions run higher in the Trades anyway; and Roof Boots and UV are sworn enemies. Over the years, those rays just beat down on the friendly chemical bonds of Vinyl and Rubber. It can be degrading to our Pipes and Roof Flanges. Here…grab some Sunscreen, and I’ll show you.

Let’s head to the roof, where all Plumbing must eventually come to an end. I’ll grab my trusty 40’ wooden extension ladder. It’s less conductive than a metal one near electrical hazards, and less expansive in the heat. They made a 135’ wooden ladder in Austria if needed, but it weighs 1,000 pounds, and we’d never get it in the Van. Now, pop up here, and let’s have a quick look-see at our Chimney Flashing and Roof Boots. You should actually be doing your annual Flashing inspection when it’s cold. That’s when the most shrinkage is visible; and please be careful. We can always use Vent Pipes to hang off of on steeper pitches, lean tools and bundles of shingles against, and slide into like ‘home plate’ to stop ourselves when coming back down. It helps toughen up terminations. I randomly abuse PVC inside the houses too sometimes.

Upon inspection, we see things aren’t looking too good. NJ Summers are ideal for connecting Plastic Pipe, but not so kind to our Flanges.

Failures are common from temperature swings, cooler nights, varmints and UV degradation. All Flanges are not created equal either. You may have learned as a Teen, while hangin’ out on your High School roof, don’t EVER buy a cheap, poorly-fitted rubber product. Anything that pulls away from a pipe in Life could lead to disaster! You’d think a Plumber knows this best of all. Yet for some reason, there are still Adults who will economize. And I say, “It’s alright, Do do do, do do do do do.”

Plumbers know Methods and Materials. Different materials obviously have different expansion rates. Copper expands 3-5 times less in the Sun than PVC, and timeless Copper vent terminations would look spectacular on our Roof. Or…we could spend less money on Copper, less time in a hot attic, and jam that last piece of Cellcore straight out to daylight. “One and Done!” And if you accidentally Primered BOTH ends of your ‘shooter ’piece out of habit, the Primer ring on the top of the Vent that you see, once in a Purple Moon, is NOW a thing of the past! Really? Yes!!

A Plumber with 40 Years Experience told me YESterday, on a Rough Inspection with NO visible Primer, “It’s all right. Purple Primer has been redesigned to only hold it’s color for 2 Days now! My color evaporated!” I kid you not. I said, “How long you been in this hot attic, Buddy. I didn’t think I was ever going to Live to see (or not see) Vanishing PVC Primer. My Trade is cooked. Tell my Wife I love her…I’m Swan-Diving off this Roof.”

Now Scientifically, our BIG issue is life-span. Shingles are tough, and last about 15-30 years. Roof Boots only live an average of 10-15 Years.

That’s a High School Math problem, Kids! Roof Collars could theoretically fail HALFWAY through the Lifetime of the Roof? YES, Little darlin’!

AND (here’s the BIG AND) that’s only IF the Flanges were actually changed with the LAST Reroof. A Professional Roofer or Plumber, worth their own Tar, would NEVER reuse a Boot. But not Everyone is a Professional. That’s why WE we grab our 40 ’ladder each year to check things out.

We’re Masters. We’re up here today for those who don’t take their Homely Responsibilities seriously.

So, we said we determined “it’s been a long, cold, lonely winter” for our Boots. You still have the Sunscreen? Is that for our Flanges? No! Double No! Chemical, oils and petroleum distillates will degrade Rubber even further. That’s for us. The Roof has outlasted its Flanges, and we’re going to properly change them. Or are we?! Why go through the torture of lifting shingles, accessing and prying nails, and performing sweet, new, Professional Collar Replacements with a touch of Lifetime Silicone. Wye not…pull out a great Roofing Trick! Slide a new Flange directly over the old Flange, nail it on TOP of the shingles on all 4 corners, and walk away. Seen it done a half dozen times; and I say, “It’s alright, Do do do, do do do do do.”

We’re back on the ground in our Recliners, with a cold beverage in hand. I hope you're having a great Summer Brothers and Sisters. As you Drive around doing estimates, look up at those 6-12” Vent Termination on Houses in town. It’s your calling-card. You spot a 2-Foot ‘Leaning Tower of PVCza’ rammed through a Roof, you knock on that Door and ask if they’ve ever had your ‘Free Complimentary Visual Home Inspection of all things Plumbing Related’! Chances are, you’ll be working in THAT House until Christmas Eve. Be safe in the Heat, drink plenty of Fluids, and when it’s brutally hot, just jump in any Pool you see. If you EVER get caught toweling off in someone’s Backyard, just claim you were doing your FREE Neighborhood annual Pool Piping and Drain Inspection. Explain that, historically, Pool Pipers have always told the World that their Industry is ‘Specialized’…and they’re special alright! Some Poolio discovered their own disappearing Primer over 40 years ago, singing, “It’s alright, Do do do, do do do do do.”

Take a look at the masthead of the newsletter in your hands. Down in the corner sits our diamond, and at the dead center of it — bigger than our own name, bigger than the year we organized — is a single word: HEALTH. Ringed around it: New Jersey State League of Master Plumbers, Organized 1913. More than a century ago, the men who founded this league had their pick of words to put at the center of the badge they would hand down to all of us. They chose that one. This first column is about why they were right.

Here’s a fact worth carrying in your truck. In 2007, the British Medical Journal asked more than 11,000 readers and physicians around the world to name the single greatest medical advance since 1840. Not since last year — since 1840. They could vote for anything. The winner was not antibiotics. It was not anesthesia. It was not vaccines. The winner, beating all three, was what the BMJ called “the sanitary revolution” — clean water coming in, and wastewater going out. The doctors of the world looked at every breakthrough in modern medicine and decided the most important one was plumbing.

So, who installs and maintains that revolution in every home, school, restaurant, firehouse, and hospital in New Jersey? You are holding the answer. We do.

The word plumber itself tells the story. It comes from the Latin plumbum — lead — because the Romans ran their water through lead pipe two thousand years ago. (They also learned the hard way about what lead does to people, a lesson our trade has never forgotten, and our codes still enforce.) But the moment that really made us a health profession came in London in 1854.

A cholera outbreak was killing people block by block when a physician named John Snow did something nobody had thought to do, he mapped where the dead lived. The deaths clustered around one public water pump on Broad Street. Snow had the handle removed, the outbreak broke, and modern epidemiology was born — founded, start to finish, on a question about water. The lesson that came out of it is the one our entire trade still stands on: keep the clean water and the wastewater apart. Everything else we do is detail.

That principle is still the beating heart of the job, even when the customer has no idea it is there. Back-flow and cross-connection control keep contaminants from being siphoned back into a potable supply. Properly sized traps and venting keep sewer gas — and methane — out of the rooms where families sleep. Anti-scald protection and sound water-heater practice keep a child from a third-degree burn at the tap, balanced against keeping the tank hot enough to hold off Legionella. Tight gas work keeps carbon monoxide and explosion off the table entirely. None of it is glamorous. All of it is life and death. And the homeowner never thinks about a bit of it — which is exactly the point. When we do our jobs right, nothing happens. No outbreak. No scald. No 2 a.m. CO call.

The absence of catastrophe is our product, and it is the hardest product in the world to sell, because nobody misses the disaster they never had.

That is also why the reminder in this very issue matters more than it might look. President Bouer in last month’s Pipeline asked us to report unlicensed contractors to the Division of Consumer Affairs and to the league. That is not about turf, and it is not about price. The hack who cross-connects a lawn irrigation line to a potable main or vents a water heater into a closet to save an hour, is not just undercutting you — he is a public-health hazard with a truck. Our license is a promise to the people of this state that somebody in that house knew the difference between sickness and health. Protecting the license is protecting the public. They are the same job.

So the next time you’re at a barbecue and somebody asks what you do — right when you’re tempted to mutter “I fix toilets” — try the line off that old American Standard poster from the 1920s that still hangs in shops all over the country: “The plumber protects the health of the nation.” It was true when they printed it. The BMJ says it’s still true a hundred years later. And in New Jersey, it’s us.

If the flue liner in a chimney has softened, cracked, or otherwise deteriorated so that it no longer has the continued ability to contain the products of combustion (i.e., heat, moisture, creosote, NFPA 211: 14.9* and flue gases), the liner shall either be removed and replaced, repaired, or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that will resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures appropriate to the class of chimney service.

Size. The chimney or vent shall be resized as necessary to control flue gas condensation in the interior of the NFPA M1801.3.1 chimney or vent and to provide the appliance, or appliances served, with the required draft. For the venting of

oil-fired appliances to masonry chimneys, the resizing shall be done in accordance with NPFA 31.

Resolutions Committee Report — June 4, 2026 Resolution submittals for the 2026 NJSLMP Convention have been accepted, recorded and distributed to all local associations, officers and committee chairman of the New Jersey State League od Master Plumbers. The resolutions are also published on the NJSLMP website at https://www.njslmp.com/final-resolution-submittals-for-the-njsl Each association in good standing should review these resolutions during their local meeting, after which your selected delegates, president, state league representative, secretary, state league officers, state league committee chairmen, state league life members and state league past presidents can cast the votes at the 2026 NJSLMP convention.

To clarify, the individuals eligible to vote at the convention are each association in good standing's president, secretary, state league representative, five delegates*, state league officers and state league committee chairman who belong to your association, as well as any state league life members or past presidents of the State League. *Delegates are selected by the local association from the local associations members specifically for attendance and voting at the NJSLMPA’s annual convention.

Apprenticeship Training Program Report - June 2026 The Apprenticeship Training Program Committee continues to make excellent progress. We have successfully signed up numerous members under our D2 Employer Agreement and have registered their apprentices within the Department of Labor system.

In addition, we have been communicating with several non-member contractors and are currently awaiting the return of their completed registration forms.

We are pleased to report that approval has been received to begin charging non-members a registration fee for participation in the D2 employer agreement, and a higher annual fee per apprentice enrolled in our training program. This will help support the continued growth and sustainability of the program.

The committee is actively working to secure additional classroom locations throughout the state and is continuing development of the online learning component of the apprenticeship program. We are also expanding our instructor roster, thank you to the members who expressed interest in teaching.

Last Thursday, I attended a community luncheon at a government training facility in Edison. I was invited because we begun discussions with the facility's administration regarding the potential use of the center for apprenticeship classes serving the Middlesex County area. This presents a tremendous opportunity for the State League. Not only would the location provide access to hands-on shop facilities, but it could also become a consistent source for their students to be future apprentices entering our program year after year. As part of the partnership, we would also assist students with employment opportunities within our industry.

On that note, I currently have several prospective apprentice candidates who are eager to begin working. If any members in the Monmouth, Ocean, or Jersey City areas are interested in hiring a new apprentice/helper—particularly for summer employment— please contact me before turning to Indeed or other online job recruitment services.

This evening, we proudly represented the State League at a local Business Association Career Night event. Thanks to President Bouer for providing the table throw and roll-up display, our booth was easily one of the most professional and eye-catching exhibits at the event. A special thank you also goes to First Vice President Bleiweis for attending and supporting the effort. We generated tremendous interest throughout the evening and had more individuals express interest in our apprenticeship opportunities than any other organization present.

The committee remains focused on final preparations and is on track to launch our first apprenticeship class in September.
