The World

When most of us think about 35 years ago, we think of the 70's. Sorry to say it's actually the late 80's - a bloody long time ago!

This year, Brisbane hosted World Expo 88, putting the river city (and the home of our Global HQ) firmly on the world map for the first time ever. Over in the UK, Margaret Thatcher became the longest-serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century. The Soviet War with Afghanistan ended after a long 8 years, and a dozen eggs cost 65c.

On the radio? Faith by George Michael, INXS’

Need you Tonight and Orinoco Flow by Enya were on high rotation on every Sony Walkman around the world.

Flight Centre

6 years into operation, 1988 was a big year for Flight Centre. It was the year that our now famous captain first appeared in our ads, it was the year we introduced “lowest airfares guaranteed” as a slogan (fun fact, enquiry quadrupled after the slogan’s first trial on TVCs and press ads!), and our second EVER Global Gathering was in Melbourne (who would have thought some of the places we’d travel to!) And urban legend but did Skroo invent the Shoey?

We're about 345 people across 63 stores and cracked $647K profit.
