Hataitai Only a short distance of around 3.5 kilometres from central Welllington, the entrance to Hataitai is through the Mount Victoria tunnel - or you may choose to get there via the scenic route through Oriental Bay. The Mount Victoria tunnel was opened in 1931 and was in fact the first New Zealand tunnel to be mechanically ventilated and air conditioned. Over 40,000 vehicles use the tunnel each week day.
