Welcome to The Official Boardmasters Magazine 2022 Boardmasters festival is the epitome of unique. Situated right on the edge of the coastline, we bring the ocean waves and leading soundwaves together to create an experience like no other in the UK. Boardmasters is all about bringing the mind, body, and soul together with nature, to create a haven for the senses. We are looking ahead to the future and a greener festival – from banning plastic straws, to a post-festival clean-up operation, to looking after the beautiful Southwestern beaches with our longstanding partner Surfers Against Sewage. History of Boardmasters

Now, let’s look back to the birth of Boardmasters Festival and how it became the showcase of surf, music, and wellbeing that we know and love today. Although our history as a music festival is relatively short, we span all the way back to the 1980s. Boardmasters is distinctly placed on the Cornish coast in Newquay. Why here you might wonder? Well, in 1981 Boardmasters was founded through the surfing competition on Fistral beach. Surfing legends like Kelly Slater and Rabbit Bartholemewl (who went on to win the World Championships) have graced the waves at Fistral.

Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley

The youngest son of Reggae legend Bob Marley, Damian gained his very own place in music history when he became the first ever Reggae arist to win a GRAMMY outside of the ”Reggae” category, taking home the award for “Best Urban/ Alternative” performance for his title single “Welcome To Jamrock” .Back for a second time with his dancehall and reggae style, Marley is here for a good time not a long time. Get ready to vibe.

Joel Corry​ London based DJ and producer Joel first burst onto the scene with his record-breaking single ”Sorry”, a twist on Monsta Boy’s classic UKG anthem “I’m Sorry”, that quickly established itself as one of the biggest tracks of the summer of 2019.

He started Djing at the age of 13, and has over 10 years of club experience under his belt. But before hitting the radio stations, Joel hit your TV screens and starred in MTV’s reality show ‘Geordie Shore’. Since then, the man has made official remixes for the likes of Wiley, Aitch, and Benny Benassi. Don’t miss it!

Patrick Topping As one of the breakout artists of his generation, Topping has contributed to a constant flow of positivity to the culture he loves so dearly, becoming one of the scene’s most popular DJs in the process. Driven by the fundamental elements of passion for the music, a deep-rooted desire to cultivate community and a genuinely warm friendly disposition, he has attained international status as a headliner.

Declan Mckenna​ An unstoppable ‘Gen Z’ icon; the wonder boy of British music. Electric, Entertaining, and thought-provoking Mckenna is to Bowie what Sam Fender is to Bruce Springsteen. He is a rare talent. A must watch.

Sam Ryder​ Releasing music during the COVID-19 lockdown, Sam caught the eyes of many famous fans from the likes of Justin Bieber to Alicia Keys. His journey has been a whirlwind.

Bastille​ Over the course of nearly a decade together, their unique sound- that cinematic, melancholic pop that masks even the bleakest realities reflected in their lyrics- has connected with audiences across the globe like no other British band in recent memory. In 2011, South Londoner, Dan Smith, started the band alone in his bedroom, releasing 300 copies of their debut single. Relentless gigging, genuine word of mouth, and some smartly curated mixtapes meant that within a few years, Chris Wood on the drums, Will Farquarson on the guitar, and Kyle Simmons on keyboard added to the line-up. On they went to become a global phenomenon.

Idles​ “We want people who’ve gone through trauma, heartbreak and loss to feel like they’re not alone. This album shows the ugly side of where those things come from, but also how it is possible to reclaim joy from those experiences.” The British rock band formed in Bristol in 2009 and continue to emphasise to their audience that they are NOT a punk band, despite every website stating that they are.

“We met Slowthai and he was a big fluffy teddy bear!”

Proud to be Cornish, it was no surprise that this young, fresh, four-piece band were offered to reopen the magical Land Of Saints stage this year after numerous festival cancellations.

Although used to the cosy security of local pubs, filled with post-punk indie fans hungry for their favourite Flowers of Palo sounds, and sweaty dancing after the isolation that 2020’s lockdowns threw at us. These guys were about to venture outside of the pub with Boardmasters 2021. This was their first time playing in front of a large audience. Emma called this a “mega” opportunity for the band.

Indeed, ‘mega’ it was. 55,000 festival goers who were aching for some fresh indie rhythms and a good boogie attended Boardmasters that year.

It was their first time playing on a stage this big with a history full of famous artists that we looked up to as kids.

Bursting with adrenaline and support from the crowd, the band hadn’t noticed rapper, Slowthai, had peeped their show and loved Emma’s voice.

Slowthai is fairly new to the music scene, but after recognition following his first single ‘jiggle’ in 2016, Slowthai blew up in the rapping world.

With 3 million monthly listeners, features with big names, his very own branch of merchandise, and his modish but unique style and voice. It was clear to see that Slowthai was only getting bigger.

Is his cheeky confidence really what’s shown off stage? Of course it is. We’re only human, it is natural to have different sides to your personality, it is choosing what side to show that is a hindrance that comes with fame. The Cornish newcomers had soemthing to say about the rapper. After chilling backstage, Flowers of Palo and Slowthai’s paths crossed briefly but briilliantly. Sharing stories of nerves and first time performing, Emma claims Slowthai was really just a “big fluffy teddy bear!”.

Nerves quickly passed as soon as Emma broke through the crowd’s roar with her angelic vocals.

Kieran and Alex tickled their bass and guitar strings, and Josh’s hands danced with the drums.

They were destined for this moment on stage and executed it so naturally.

As much as we want you to be safe and have a good time, we know things don’t always go as planned even if you take the correct precautions. We want to reassure you that there is always help when you need it, so don’t struggle in silence.

Drugs and alcohol affect your state of mind, and stop you from making correct or safe judgements. So here are a few guidelines to follow if you find yourself in unsafe situations at the festival:

Listen to what your friends have to say about how you’re acting, as well as politely letting them know if they are not acting appropriately/not how they normally would – you never know, they might need your help.

Try to leave valuable belongings at home. If it’s a necessity, keep your cash, cards, and other valuable belongings on you. Even during the night Try to stay in groups or with a festival buddy, to decrease the risk of them being stolen – make don’t wander off on your own. sure to keep a note of your bank’s number on hand to cancel/freeze any stolen cards.

Land Of Saints Originally known as the Mavericks stage, The Land of Saints is a proud new transformation and the home of Indie rock. Grounding its roots in the traditional bastion of rock, Boardmasters simply evolved with the new music scene to introduce artists like Royal Blood and Wolf Alice.

Artists from the independent scene usually kick it on The Land of Saints stage.

The Main Stage The main stage loves to put on a dazzling light show, with some fireworks thrown in for good measure. It has the wow factor everyone looks for at a festival, the most memorable acts often grace the main stage. Don’t miss Kings of Leon, Damian Marley and Disclosure headlining in 2022.

Unleashed

Some of the biggest dance and club anthems in the world make their way to the Southwest for an unforgettable rave under the Unleashed big top arena. Nothing but up-beat, Late into summer nights, legendary sets can be high tempo tunes spanning genres like electro, heard overlooking Watergate Bay. This open-air beach party hosts ground-breaking world class house, garage, and grime.

However, if you haven’t ever done it before it’s not as simple as grabbing a surfboard and jumping into the ocean. As with any sport or hobby that involves nature, we have to have some basic understanding of the ‘how’s’, ‘what’s’ and ‘why’s’.

ALL WAYS WARM UP - At home, before your lesson

or surf stretching your joints and muscle groups is essential to help curb any injuries both new and old whilst learning to surf.

DON’T LEARN TO SURF BY YOURSELF/ simply just OBSERVE, STUDY, AND LEARN - Spend some time hire equipment. No matter how easy you think it before heading out into the water watching the

LOOK TO FIND AN ACCREDITED, EXPERIENCED, AND GOOD SURF SCHOOL - A good surf school won’t just

teach you how to surf, they will inspire you and make you fall in love with surfing and the ocean. A good surf school will teach you the fundamentals and look after you.

FIND A SURF SCHOOL LOCATED ON A BEGINNER FRIENDLY SURF BEACH - Surfing on a beach that is

appropriate for beginner surfers is crucial to your success and fun. Learn to surf on a beach known for good, steady, soft, and mechanical like waves that will help the whole learning process to be a lot smoother. As you progress in your surfing a good surf school will know when it’s time to push your surfing and take you on fun learning adventures to new beaches with different types of waves and breaks.

EQUIPMENT MATTERS - If you are learning with a good surf school you’ll be in good hands and using the right equipment. They are also great in preventing any serious injuries from happening.

This in turn allows you to make timely and correct decisions. You might not think it, but you have all the time in the world out in the surf.

GO SMALL - Always stay in manageable water depth, dependant on your height, generally a water level up to your hips or stomach is safe to allow you to manage your circumstances.

ENGAGE YOUR SENSES - Keep your eyes open, ears as water free as possible, and try to really engage with both senses to really help you connect to your experience by helping you to enjoy your surf by learning faster and also keeping you safe from your surroundings.

Space is space - try and give yourself some space between you and other beginner surfers based in the same area as you. If there are 15 other people aiming to catch the same wave as you, simply put your feet back into the sand and let’s catch the next or another wave that follows. There are plenty waves in the ocean for all of us to ride.

MARKERS - External / Outside the water makers, like a big colourful building or single big tree, will help you not to drift out of position / location whilst in the water. These usually come in the form of tidal or rip current and also the wind.

As your surfing starts to progress, you’ll always be learning new and fun things. The list above isn’t exhaustive, you will learn & grow to understand yourself, nature, and in turn become a much better surfer.

As well as claiming an U18 English National Champion title, and being two times International Gromsearch finalist, 17-year-old Alys Barton takes home two winnings at this year’s comp, placing 1st in the U18s and Women’s Open division. Having been surfing for less than four years, Alys is a true representation of dedication and perseverance, and she always has fun.

Bude born and bred, this cheeky chap charges. After being scouted by Quiksilver at the young age of eight, 18-year-old Stan Norman has gone on to compete worldwide, representing his country through European and World junior events. Norman is one of few that can handle the pressure, and it pays off too. Stanley took home the winning for the U18 Mystic Junior OPEN division this year and only hopes to take home more.

FAVOURITE CORNISH BREAK? “My favourite Cornish wave is probably Boss (Bossiney) because there are power barrels, airs and big turns.”

Across the years, Boardmasters has enforced various methods to make the festival a more sustainable and enjoyable event for all who attend; whether it’s the surf or the sounds. Having teamed up with the charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), the festival organisers have been able to take on a range of sustainable strategies to reduce its carbon footprint and to continue to work harmoniously alongside the local community and the environment. Festivals across the country can be detrimental to the surrounding nature.

The amount of litter left behind, abandoned tents, and pollution produced from festival goers is becoming outstanding. Boardmasters comes with more than just one challenge: the beaches. Fistral beach is predominantly occupied by the Boardmasters surf competition, but since music came to the stage in 2005, the plastic that has been left and dragged into the sea has caused an unwanted rise in pollution and sewage levels. Boardmasters set out to tackle these issues.

Kevin Moore, festival director at Vision Nine, has shared Boardmasters’ approach to sustainability and its progress toward being carbon neutral by 2023. In 2021, the festival used an onsite waste sorting and recycling plant to increase the amount of recycling across the event. This helped to reduce levels of contamination and pollution.

Boardmasters has also helped cut the amount of vehicle movement around the festival; whether this is shuttle buses or heavy goods vehicles (HGV)which in the long run will help to reduce their overall carbon footprint. We all know that in a time like this, it is impossible to be completely 100% plastic-free and carbon neutral. But Boardmasters strives for this ambition every year, through the help of SAS and with the help of everyone who attends.

Through the SAS partnership and the formation of the Green Team, Boardmasters has put together some strategies that both volunteers, workers, and festival goers can use to create a greener and cleaner festival:

1. Boardmasters aims to eradicate all non-essential single-use plastic by 2021 by removing all bottled water from behind the scenes and ensuring all staff and artists have reusable bottles. Ocean science and marine conservation graduate Emily Saunders, now current MSC student of Environmental Consultancy, became an ambassador for Surfers Against Sewage at the end of her first year at Plymouth University.

Her huge passion for marine environment drove her to take on a bigger role for the organisation. Her interest in the subject continues to grow as the earth continues to adapt and dodge the growing threats from climate change and the negative effects of anthropogenic impacts. “I don’t believe enough is being done on a large enough scale and to a high enough level to tackle the ocean and climate crisis. I want to be a part of the transition to a healthier blue future.”

Once you have bought your Boardmasters ticket, there’s no need to worry about a pitch, but a little planning beforehand can go a long way.

Whilst you won’t be far away from civilisation (there is a 10-minute shuttle bus running every two hours to Newquay town), it is still handy to prep yourself to ensure a smooth camping experience at the festival.

It’s important for us at Boardmasters Festival that you leave no trace; whatever you decide to bring, it should go back home with you or be disposed of appropriately.

Greenfield Eco Campsite – This is a first come first serve campsite, dedicated to eco warriors who want to support the festival’s pledge to sustainability and making greener options.

Be a part of something bigger by taking part in daily beach cleans, saying no to single use plastic, and helping our team shape sustainability plans. The Eco Campsite is hosted by Camplight who provide pre-pitched tents. ‘Travel green, reuse a tent, save money, lighten your load’.
