01 Framework of Celebration Project “Merbabu Glamping�

Stucture as a celebration.

Glamour Camping is located in Salatiga with amenities such as restaurant, main entrance, playground, amphitheater, eating area, and public toilet. This project works with local communities in making of rattan wicker, the informant of processes farming for the ultimate educational activities, and provides vegetables and fruit for visitors. Site and building mass is designed to be integrated by maintaining local natural conditions such as minimizing cut and fill, building water channels at each end of the slope, and using steel as the main material for lighter buildings.

In the process of form generating, I was inspired by the journey of climbing mountain, passes many natural features like rough stone texture, walking inside the cave, and sit under the leaves lush. All this atmosphere is translated into space experience in designing skin of building integrated with site contour.

MAIN CONCEPT

“The journey of climbing” Inside the cave “Get into a long tunnel. Under and above the stone. Just follow the path.

Feel the hole surfaces. I will find beautiful view. soon.

Under the tree “Lush leaves almost covered the sky and incoming sunlight. Breathe fresh and cool air. Here, under the tree, I was replaced by nature.”

Stand on rocky ground “Walking on rocky ground. A short break. Rests again on rocks, soil, and shrubs. Keep balance. It will take me to the top of montain.”

01. MAIN ENTRANCE The arrival of people is celebrated by entering the main entrance by displaying webbing made by the local community in their unique style.

A combination of steel and rattan woven makes it lighter. Linear massing with cavities in the center is given pressure on forces that are not unidirectional to create triangular geometries inspired by mountain silhouettes. Space experiences like folded inviting visitors to focus on enjoying the texture of local crafts until the end of the view door leads directly to the mount with a spread of rice fields, trees, and cliffs.

The folding concept such as main entrance is applied to the playground by giving an upward force so that it lifts up the fields and creates cavities for children to pass through.

The difference in height for the age range of children is adjusted to the height of cavities and solids that can be climbed.

Blunt textures such as wood and grass are combined to enrich the sense of touch and the variety of play activities that can be done such as rolling, walking up and down.

02. PUBLIC TOILET The uses of stone as the layer of walls and rattan as the layer of roofs create the feelings of mountain with rocks and trees.

The understanding of land sloping and good sanitation system is needed to separate black water and gray water so it does not contamine the waterways. To keep fresh air in public toilet, there are louvres in opposite wall to create cross ventilation.

Stucture as an expression.

Art is not created, but revealed.

Menteng as an elite area was once a garden city as Ebenezer Howard proposed to have an interesting dualism story. Intimacy and openness, silence and excitement give the image of a capitalist and socialist Menteng.

SPATIAL MECHANISM

Designing a gallery as a public space cannot be separated from the activities and habits of children, youth, and the arts community in expressing themselves. There is some communities near such as poetry group, musical, reading book, etc. They actively use park as social and expression places. Art galleries with amphitheater facilities, libraries, cafes, workshop rooms and discussions, as well as an evening show area on the rooftop are expected to accommodate community activities to work.

The structure manifest the dualism of Menteng, hide and seek by using contras elements: straight line in structure and curvy line in facade.

MICRO SCALE ANALYSIS AND INITIAL CONCEPT “Building as meeting point of community event” Although Menteng was originally intended to be an exclusive community, there were, in fact, many modest houses built along its edges, perhaps to serve as a buffer, but also ensuring occupancy by a cross section of the European community of Batavia. Now this community endured as the city around it changed drastically.

The building’s corner needs to designed attractive as an accent of intersection of road. The bottom edge is lifted up to let the tree grows and invite people to public area: amphiteatre and stage performance. Long side of building is visually reduced by floating impression.

People can enjoy and explore to be on ground, middle, and top of the building. Gallery as main function inside building and public activity on ground level as amphiteatre and stage for art performance. Roof garden can be used for eventual moment.

Located in Sudirman, near from Bundaran HI and highrise building with vertical orientation is contrast with horizontal orientation. This membrane float shaded fruit and vegetables market and restaurant try to break the continuity of heavy structure with light structure.

SPATIAL MECHANISM

Form finding begins from making exploration models of tensegrity. Minimum surface create lighter structure which is supported by elasticity, tension and compression force. Instead of create a system of beam and column clearly, tensegrities represent a system of “equilibrated omnidirectional stresses” and they don’t need any supportand are self-equilibrated as well as pre-stressed, In living nature, tensegrity structures can be found as a governing principle inmany biological systems ranging from cells to tissues and organ systems. In technology, tensegrity principle is used widely in buidling new structures, shelters, and bridges. They are lightweight in comparison to other structures with similar resistance.

If the dowel is done vertically, the dowel is capable to hold the horizontal force, and vice versa will able to withstand vertical forces.

Laminated timber

Wood is cut into 3 layers to make it quite thin to be curved. In addition, steel plates are given to support flexibility and prevent the crack in wood layers.

There are also connections that use steel bolts, however still maintain the use of wood in the nut. The use of wood material may serve to protect so that the friction between the wood and the nut becomes large and not slippery so that the connection is not easy to move.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

Foundation

This weaving column is tied with a ring steel to prevent progressively more enlarged (its diameter) due to no opposite force. Other than that, each end of the laminated timber tied with a steel disk functions same as a steel ring and help distribute the force from point to the ground.

Mast

Mast provides a compressive force on the membrane structure (laminated timber + ETFE membrane) to make the membrane structure lifted and to keep the membrane standing on the ground so that there are four poles which are still one structure with the membrane structure providing a tensile force to the ground.

Wooden roof

Laminated timber is interwoven in 120o direction and then repeated until they form five layers (overlap and interlock) that form a hexagon space and remain triangular. It serves to provide more rigid flexibility with this triangle formed.

Membrane

Covering the whole building, it protects the wooden frame from rain, sun and wind. The membrane is made of fibreglass and Teflon (PTFE, or polytetrafluoroethylene).

The overhanging roof, up to 20 metres in places, protects the walls from the elements. The membrane is translucent, letting through 15% of the light to reveal the hexagonal roof structure at night.

TRANSFORMING SPACE BY FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT At first, furniture is on three sides and left empty space at the centre. Then, furniture is tried to push on two sides and one side. Remaining space is optimized by other furniture that fit with this. Finally, empty space is bigger than before. The more space is available, the more activites can be done here,

Furniture is moved from work lab into community hall and some parts need to be re-installed such as glass and wood board. We demonstrate the interactive system and try together to see its works.

Expandable table use folding system by cross frame connection that enable to extend this table from 38 centimeters to 2 meters long and completed with wheels.

05 Public Platform Project “Green Atrium” Transition place connecting.

Kota Kasablanka Mall in Tebet, Jakarta was one of success retail in Jakarta for his arrangement of retail inside from lower until upper middle class. Now, it will be extended to the next area plus apartment and hotel. There are some challenging problem in this area: street in between, not authorized land, and different level between existing and extension area. Connecting this place as unity, especially for people in shopping area is main challenge in this project. We tried to designing a public platform to connect both, an open space-green atrium, it can be used as public activities such as performance and booth. This central space will atract people to look each other, keep continuous path, and gather in one place to enjoying an events. Negotiating the existing in new stage is not only enough by adding “third space” as a connection but some problems that had been embeded before in existing area such regulation and calculation is another interesting case to be solved by design. Besides, designing apartment and hotel tower above retail is also concern about “separation” between private (residence) and public (retail).

Through this project, I learned about the way of negotiate with building regulation change and marketing strategy in designing mixed-use building.

STREET ACROSS THE EXTENSION SITE The street divide two area between existing and extension. Connecting two building above the street can be done by designing a skywalk so it create continuos path for people move.

NOT AUTHORIZED LAND There is an un-authorized land inside extension area and challenging enough to designing extension building that does not intruding this land and “hide” this land from other side of building.

DIFFERENCE LEVEL SITE AND ROAD Difference level between two area is 3 meter so connection level must be considered well which is linked with building coverage area calculation, connecting floor, and people accessibility.

Connecting two buildings by create shared platform for urban festival, such exhibition, stage performance, and outdoor dining. This platform will be a centered public activity that attract people to go outdoor, moving from existing to extension building besides a bridge availability. For family, they can enjoy shopping inside and playing outside with their children and for community and millenials can enjoy outdoor activities.

Two buildings are connected at basement 1 (street level) and lower ground (near KFC).

Connecting two buildings with bridge that has the same atmosphere is by continuing corridor width and adjusting retail store. There is some guidelines that I tried to create seamless connection.

1. keep corridor width same as existing at 16 meters wide with 8 meters wide of void or island store 2. some part of retail store that is located at connection path must be reduced, extended, or chamfered until it feels a unity 3. if there is less than 16 meters corridor width available, it can be reduced until 8 meters with no void in between 4. the end of the corridor should be smooth by create a round for island store so it feels like endlessly path 5. this bridge connect at north and south by connecting imaginary line between main void or atrium to expand view from turn moving

1. FIXED FORM

Not authorized land in site area located near south bridge connection the bridge width must be reduced. Corridor width is keep at 16 meters wide (double loaded) with 4 meters for sirculation left and right and 8 meters for void or island store. At some point, the depth of store is not efficient to be used as window shopping so the store is removed and left sirculation area only. On the other side, to create seamless path when through this narrower width, the side facade that facing the street is “torn” and replaced with transparent facade skin. This oval glass can be an accent for bridge.

The challenging case from this calculation is low building coverage ratio left but high floor area left. The design of buildings and modes of transportation that are not integrated are the main issues in Cawang which cause pedestrian security problems and the accumulation of train users at the time of leaving and returning to work. Begin with observing pedestrian and calculating the speed and interval time between all public transportation, it helps design to determine the building program that can be injected into retail.

SPATIAL MECHANISM

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) project oriented to public transportation users is developed for retails, offices, and hotels whose strategic position with various modes of transportation such as trains, busways and LRT. The building is designed as a main entrance to Cawang station and Cawang Cikoko busway stop so it must be iconic. The uniqueness of the site which has access to 2 highways has the potential to create a crowded atmosphere by presenting plazas and window shopping as a solution to security problems for pedestrians.

Accentuate an entrance to go to underpass simply by create floating edge and plaza. Buiding side that facing the street is more transparent and open to accomodate people who come and go.

Double height space at moment after and before go to another destination. This space is filled by food and beverage store so people can stop to eating and waiting their friends or colleagues.

Sunken plaza as a way to create amphiteatre and intimate space below the ground so people can sit and talk together in public plaza.

Building setbacks at one side (front) and shifting mass at the other side create more space with green roof.

Indoor cafe in center of lobby with transparent materials and tree inside to welcoming resident, worker, or guest to wait their friends while enjoy food and beverage.

More than create a tunnel atmosphere with long path, plain wall, and quiet, I try to design underpass more friendly by activate water elements ang bring food retail to festive.

SUBSTRACTION MASS

Sculpting a block of concrete by using a chisel and drill. Some mechanisms used: drilled, cut, carved. First, drill the bottom as an access from street to underpass.

Then project the imaginary line to the top. Make a blunt angle from acute angle. Carve slowly. From right to the left. Repeat. Drill from top to the bottom until find its end.

MATERIALS

Building as entrance for connecting people move, mass of retail and podium design with simplicity, only marked with floating edge (right angle) by cut another edge in obtuse angle. Apartment tower and office tower as separated mass, one is bigger at the top and the later is asymmetric.

Through the LRT line at approximately 13 meter above ground level, floor height between top podium and facility podium is created double to let LRT line keep visible, from ground level and from people in light rail.

As sculpting a box of concrete, this facade is dominated by concrete; stone; soft grey; feeling cold; and rough texture. Apartment mass and podium in stripped-line. concrete with jagged surface. Contrast, as a something that is found surprisingly, office is covered by wood; in pieces; brown; feeling warm, and softer texture.

Building performance priority.

“Constructing the time and the sense of familiarity by implanting false memories.”

Memory in architecture creates curiosity, anxiety, and triggers our mind to explore deeper to give confidence to everyone. In the time travelling, there are always elements that change and fixed elements that become identities which will be stored in memory and become the basis and dream of everyone. De javu show us the time relativity that able us to move the dimensions in a short time.

A STORY IN PARTIAL SECTION

Buildings are not seen as a static cycle of events but rather demolition of dynamic and diverse events (which experience changes or may be delayed).

The potential of one event with other events are inter-connected.

Events that have occurred (past) can contaminate events that have not yet happened (future) and events that have not yet happened (future) can also intervene events that have occurred (past).

The power of time makes the present exist because of the past and the future exists because of the present

DUALISM OF THICK TIME AND CIRCLE OF TIME You are always younger than what you see, what you hear, what you touch, and what you feel.

Because of what you see, hear, touch, and feel is the you from a moments before.

The past, present, and future can intersect, folded up, warped, and shrunk.

You can jump easily. You can stay here at the same time. When you remember the past, you will remember the future although you are in present.

JUMP INTO FUTURE BY AWAKEN THE PAST Not all piece of story you remembered, but some part rearrange themself in your mind.

Time has two direction, you will jump into past and future easily from present. Remember the past can be a dream of future.

Time has never really existed and we may never die.

THE LAYER OF TIME Every position has different time, and the extension of position is the extension of time. Position and time creates event. Every events seemed to have preceding cause and following effect. Some events are independent and the others are intersect or cross.

IMPLANTING FALSE MEMORIES Lost memories need deja vu to keep my life keep going.

Implanting false memory occurs because of same event are repeated in different time and place until memory tries to connect the event with other similar event to resume the stories. Finally, the time mixes at moment and give false information to our mind.

THE STORIES OF ARCHITECTURE Deja vu: Constructing The Time and The Sense of Familiarity by Implanting False Memories New methods in Architectural design process can be found from a story about déjà vu.

For the past year, an old chef often noticed a princess who had a dinner with the king.

He was attracted by her beauty.

One night, the old chef dreamed of found a horse that could talk and told him to propose the princess.

He went to the temple anxiously to meet the princess’s father.

The proposal was rejected and he told to go far away so as not to meet her daughter again.

Déjà vu becomes a learning medium for architecture to be viewed from a time point of view. Memory as the agent of a living human process to senses dan familiar with everything becomes the basis for the dismantling of déjà vu mechanisms and contents in story that builds the time in Architecture.

The illusion of time occurs when déjà vu implants a false memory to human through his familiarity.

Exploration in story representation techniques and déjà vu mechanisms were tested on the site of Glodok to produce relevant new methods.

The subject of testing is first person as actor to tell the story of déjà vu. The memory of Glodok is awakened through a story that shifts past, present, and future events from Glodok. The idea of déjà vu by repeating the past, the present, and the future implies an Architectural story that grows over time through everyday life.

Space in architecture can be enjoyed by people subjectivity that cannot be prevented.

His desire to marry the princess was so great and still often meets the princess near the river silently.

Over the time, the princess’s father knows and he planned to kill him.

I’m tired and I want to rest. I walk to find a safe place, I sit, and I see fireflies.

So beautiful!

Look! Look there! I saw a young couple walking to me.

Yes! The princess who once wanted to be married turned out to be his mother. The name of gravestone is exacly the same as his mother! And her birthday! And her age!

09 Manifestation of Nature Project “Gandroengi Boemi” Key points: geological park, crack

DESCRIPTION

“Tak kenal maka tak sayang”, Gandroengi Boemi is a prologue, an introduction for tourist to get to know more about living harmony with nature.

Located on the most eastern island of Java, “Sunrise of Java” is the nickname for Banyuwangi which is allowed to see light first. The flanking of mountains and seas add the natural formation of Banyuwangi. Known as uniqueness of geological park, cracks and gaps are the main reasons for this natural creation.

SPATIAL MECHANISM

The simplicity of building mass from Atap Tikel Balung which is reconstructed with cracks and gaps makes nature take its role.

Natural ventilation and lighting, and the use of local materials laden with craftmanship and mass clusters that follow the rhythm of the contour are the result of learning from nature.

The term “merah (red)” is also taken from a unique phenomenon that occurs in this region where the color of this sand will turn red in the afternoon. This discoloration is influenced by water and exposure to the setting sunset.

ALAS PURWO NATIONAL PARK

ALAS PURWO NATIONAL PARK The park's name means first forest or ancient forest, in accordance with a Javanese legend that says the earth first emerged from the ocean here. As a natural rain forest on the island of Java, here there are 580 types of flora and 50 species of fauna scattered throughout the forest.

BLUE FIRE IJEN CRATER BUE FIRE IJEN CRATER

West of Gunung Merapi is the Ijen volcano, which has turquoise-coloured acidic crater lake and it is the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world. The flames can be up to five meters high. It is one of the largest blue flame area in the world, the other location is in Dallol mountain, Ethiopia.

Crack in formation of these geological park become a design concept for form generating of Tourism Information Centre. Crack gives an opportunity to nature to take a role. The heat of the sulfur melts the stone; water that erodes the soil; and water that breaks the stone.

Through the crack, there are lives that come and go which give and take.

The simplicity of the mass of the building from the roof of Tikel Balung is reconstructed through a crack makes nature dominate its role. Natural lighting and ventilation, local material craftmanship, and mass clusters that follow the contour rhythm.

10 Manifestation of Culture Project “Singgah Pulo”

DESCRIPTION

Key points: Betawi, terrace, Rumah Kebaya, information centre

Singgah Pulo from the word “singgah” means come for a moment when in a tour and word “pulo” means local inhabitants Orang Pulo in Kepulauan Seribu. Located in Pulau Panjang that will be built an airport, Singgah Pulo become a tourism information centre for visitor to know and educate about Jakarta especially Kepulauan Seribu (history, geography, culture, etc).

Inspired by history of Kepulauan Seribu as a gateway for foreign to Batavia (Jakarta) and the value of terrace in Rumah Kebaya make the design of Singgah Pulo reflects the value of genuine, honest, and spirit of Orang Pulo and rich of their culture of everyday life. The availability of integrated infrastructure, services and transportation will increase the interest of tourists coming and make them feel comfortable and sure to return to Kepulauan Seribu and will make improvement in the economic, social and public education sector and the promotion of Indonesian culture, especially Betawi culture.

SITE CONSIDERATION THE GATE TO BATAVIA In the past, other nations that headed towards Batavia always crossed Kepulauan Seribu and made it a defense as a front guard againts enemies such as the fortress of Martello on Onrust Island.

BETAWI TRADITIONAL HOUSE TERRACE The philosophy of terrace in Betawi house is a place of respect for guest who come. This public-oriented principles become a concept for brainstorm and educate tourism in information centre.

“GIGI BALANG” Gigi Balang ornaments are never separated from Betawi house. Gigi Balang come from “grasshopper teeth” which have the meaning of the value of perseverance, honesty, courage, and tenacity of a grasshopper that can break wood.

Pulau Panjang located at the centre of Kepulauan Seribu, strategic location for transit area and will be designed an airport here. This island is also one of the uninhabited islands which is expected that with the availability of infrastructure and transportation will become a new destination in the Thousand Islands. Therefore, with the presence of the Tourism Information Center for local and foreign tourists who arrive on this island will be very effective and help tourists to get to know more about Kepulauan Seribu.

Site for building at the south of island, 1000 M2 area with 300 M2 floor area, and east-west oriented as Pulau Panjang site orientation. This building will be integrated to airport and dock for arrival and departure.

Split Level: ramp for easier access

Come and Go: information both in land and sea

Lounge: enjoy the waiting time for canoes and airplane

Floor is lifted up to anticipate for tide water.

Sea side is for arrival and land side is for departure.

Extension of land and sea become terrace for both side.

11 The End: How to be an Actor?

Project “Composition of Imagination”

DESCRIPTION

Key points: surrealism, hologram, meaning, story

Composition of Imagination is a space for collage artist named Resatio Adi Putra to find his inspiration. His works are surrealis and depends on what meaning he wanted to tell us. By the depth of each frame, he can compose his imagination through what he see, not what is really see.

He loves walking in the beach, forest, and the sea to find his inspiration. He imagines something from what he sees, hears, touches, and smells and create a story. Then, he compose the possibilities of his imagination that depends on whats meaning of his story.

SPATIAL MECHANISM

This project tried to design a space for his inspiration by observing the experience of walking, exploring the nature by human senses.

This space is inhabitable for 2-3 days and accomodate his needs (and senses) for that by create hologram wall that can be rotated so he can re-arrange and compose his imagination.

WALKING EXPERIENCE The analyze of what is revealed by walking slowly and observe at the same time. What’s see is about distortion, point of view, the distance between observer and the object, and the moving of surrounding.

The Possibilites of Captured View by Frame

Suddenly, when my body was floating, I could see all the rabbit I drifted off to sleep when the sun stops shone I, who is your father, have died.

These frame can be rotated 360o and create differences of angles. So the changing of solid (papercrete frame) and translucent (glass) formed by filling the translucent with view of fade the view with solid frame.

Captured view is showed by green color. The proportion of view can be arranged, vertically, horizontally, and none so he can create a stories by their possibilities of captured view.
