The History of the St. Bonaventure Men’s Lacrosse Program
First announced in March 2017, men’s lacrosse became the 17th NCAA Division I varsity sport at St. Bonaventure University, and the eighth league member for men’s lacrosse in the MAAC, joining Canisius, Detroit Mercy, Manhattan, Marist, Monmouth, Quinnipiac and Siena.
“Unofficial” Club Season
First Coach was Ray Rodriguez (student)
Played freshman teams from Syracuse, Cornell, and Hobart
The University eventually voted against a proposal from the lacrosse club to become “the first Catholic University to field an intercollegiate lacrosse team”
Program
First Coach was Larry Hall (Salamanca schoolteacher)
Played Niagara, Brockport, Monroe Community College, and others
First Coach was Mark Ward (also an assistant basketball coach)
Early game schedules included D3 schools and previous club opponents, and some games against D1 schools, including Canisius, Notre Dame, and Siena
Club Program
Lacrosse, along with hockey, was redesignated to club status
1988: Mike Vaccaro, Editor in Chief of the Bona Venture on-campus newspaper at the time, wrote:
“If and when the athletic department lifts the lacrosse club to varsity status, it will be a winner year in and year out.”
Vaccaro is a 1989 graduate of St. Bonaventure and is currently the lead sports columnist for The New York Post
Randy Mearns was named the first Division I men’s lacrosse head coach in St. Bonaventure University history on June 20, 2017.
A decorated coach and player, Mearns brings a lengthy resume to St. Bonaventure.
Mearns directed the men’s lacrosse program at Canisius College for the past 19 seasons before accepting the job at SBU. During his time in Buffalo, Mearns led his program to a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2012. Under his leadership, 41 players have received all-conference accolades and a number have gone on to play professionally – six Canisius players have been selected in the first round of the National Lacrosse League Draft and three earned selections in the Major League Lacrosse Draft.
In 2017, Mearns registered his 100th career victory with the Griffs and guided the MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year in Connor Kearnan while six of his players were honored as part of the annual MAAC awards. Mearns’ players also enjoyed success in the classroom as 19 student-athletes were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team, tying for most in the league. Mearns enjoyed another winning MAAC season as well, giving him 11 years where his Canisius teams have been .500 or better in conference.
“As the process went, this became more and more of a great fit,” Mearns said. “The opportunity at St. Bonaventure really intrigued me; when I came on campus I was immediately inspired. This is a gem of an institution. I think we can really build something special here.
“The academics at St. Bonaventure are phenomenal, the people are phenomenal and the support for the program is there,” Mearns continued. “Tim Kenney is a visionary who is excited about this journey and I want to thank Tim and (St. Bonaventure University President) Dr. DePerro for this opportunity. I’m tremendously excited to be part of it.”
Mearns also has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success on the international level. In 2014, he added a gold medal to his head coaching resume by leading the Canadian National Team to the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship. That year saw 10 of his Canisius players participate in the world championship including five on his winning Canadian team. Prior to leading the Canadian National Team to the 2014 World Championship, he was an assistant coach in both 2006 and 2010, with the 2006 team also winning the gold medal.
In his nine-year playing career in the National Lacrosse League (NLL), he was a part of two championship teams and named NLL All-Star Game MVP in 1999. He has also experienced success at the National level as team captain of four Mann Cup championship teams, the Brampton Excelsiors (‘93) and the Six Nations Chiefs (‘94-’96). Further, he served as team captain for the Rochester Knighthawks (NLL) for six years, and Team Canada at the 1998 World Championship.
While in Rochester, he helped the Knighthawks to four championship appearances (‘96, ‘97, ‘99 and 2000) including a league title in 1997. He bookended his NLL playing
career with a pair of seasons with the Buffalo Bandits including the best offensive output of his career with 14 goals and 24 assists during the 2002 season. In all, he tallied 244 career points in nine NLL seasons with Buffalo and Rochester.
He also played in the Canadian Junior A and Canadian Senior A Lacrosse Leagues with a 10-year stint beginning in 1990. During that time, he appeared in eight national championships including five as team captain, winning six overall championships.
Mearns was a part of the Canadian Junior National Team which won the silver medal in the 1988 World Championships before being a part of the first recruiting class at Canisius. He finished his college career ranking second in Griffs career scoring with 190 points and still holds the school’s single season records for points (94) and assists (49). Mearns is also the Griffs’ all-time leader in assists (95). He was drafted by the Buffalo Bandits in 1992 to begin his professional playing career and was a member of the Bandits Major Indoor Lacrosse League World Championship team in 1993.
After serving as a tri-captain for the 1998 World Championship Canadian silver medal winners, he accepted the head coaching job at Canisius and guided his alma mater for 19 years.
He is a member of the Canadian Lacrosse, Ontario Lacrosse, Rochester Knighthawks and Canisius College halls of fame and also owns bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Canisius.
—Coach Mearns
Nico Capron joined the Bonnies men’s lacrosse coaching staff as an assistant during summer 2019.
During the 2020 season, Capron helped lead several volunteer initiatives as the Bonnies were leaders in community service. During the year, the team raised over $30,000 to go toward various cancer research charities.
Prior to coming to Bonaventure, Capron most recently served as an assistant coach at Division III Colby College during the 2019 season. He helped guide Colby to the New England Small College Athletic Conference playoffs for the first time since 2015. He also assisted in the organization of travel logistics and day-to-day operations of the program.
Before moving to Colby College, Capron spent two years as an assistant coach at the College of the Holy Cross. During his time with the Crusaders, he assisted in all facets of the program’s operation including student-athlete recruiting and player development.
Capron has also spent time with Saint Joseph’s and Queens University of Charlotte as a volunteer assistant coach.
As a player, Capron, a Canisius grad, was a four-year letterman and was a member of the 2012 Metro Atlantic Conference Championship team under head coach Randy Mearns.
GNill Conners was named to the St. Bonaventure men’s lacrosse coaching staff in September 2018 and entered his third season with the program in 2020-21.
Conners joined St. Bonaventure after working the previous three years at Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member Siena College. At Siena, Conners worked as an assistant coach assisting with the development of defensive and goalie units. Along with his game day and player development duties, he was also responsible for organizing team travel arrangements as well as the Saints’ camps.
Prior to his time in Albany, Conners began his collegiate coaching career with a season at Brown University where he was a volunteer assistant coach. He worked with Brown’s goalies and defensive players while also organizing the program’s camps and assisted in recruiting for a staff that helped Brown to an Ivy League Championship and spot in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Under Conners’ assistance, Bears’ goalie Jack Kelly ranked 11th nationally in saves per game and the Brown defense ranked second in the nation in caused turnovers per game.
As a player, Conners was a goaltender for Quinnipiac from 2012-14 after transferring from Onondaga Community College. At Quinnipiac, he finished in the top five in NCAA Division I saves per game in both of his seasons with the program and also ranked seventh in the nation in save percentage as a senior. Named a team captain, he was also an All-NEC First Team selection and earned the distinction of being named his team’s most valuable player. During his first two collegiate seasons, he helped lead Onondaga to the NJCAA National Championship in back-to-back years, earning First Team All-America honors both years. He earned a degree in communications from Quinnipiac.
ik Clinton is in his first season serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bonnies men’s lacrosse team, after playing for the team for the past two seasons.
During his first season as a Bonnies lacrosse player, Nik was named Team Captain, played in 12 games, and was awarded the “Unsung Hero Award.” Nik was then awarded the “Brian Moretti Service Award” during his second season, which was cut short due to Covid.
Nik graduated from St Bonaventure University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Studies with an emphasis in Sports Management and a Minor in Business Administration.
Prior to attending St. Bonaventure, Nik attended Adams State University and played Division II lacrosse there for two seasons. Nik also played lacrosse in the CCBLL Box League from 2017-2019, and was drafted by the Gold Miners in 2017 and the Red Hawks in 2018-2019.

Men’s lacrosse began as a varsity sport in the 20182019 academic year. Under the direction of head coach Randy Mearns, the top priority for the program was the construction of a dedicated team locker room. The athletics department identified space on the ground floor of the Reilly Center and renovated it for the team.

This locker room provides St. Bonaventure’s men’s lacrosse team the best possible experience and ensures that the program has the necessary facilities to recruit the studentathletes needed to compete for championships.
The locker room includes 51 solid oak, 30-inch lockers, each with ample space for sticks, shoes, and gear, as well as a shelf for helmets and a drawer under the seat. The lockers face inward to facilitate team meetings and interaction. There is also a bathroom and shower area for the players.
Go Bonnies!
