There goes a longboard. And another one. You can’t help but look fascinated at students riding on their vibrantly colored longboards across campus. What’s a longboard you ask? Well, think skateboard meets stretch limo with more stability, traction and durability due to lower wheel durometers. The angles at which some longboards can turn, as well as their ability to coast long distances make them ideal for cruising across Stetson’s rolling Florida campus. And Stetson has no shortage of amazing riding weather being ideally situated in sunny Central Florida in the historic college town of DeLand (minutes from Daytona Beach). Riders might seem like forces of nature gliding along, but they’re merely Stetson students, who, well, can’t help but go to class in Florida style. The longboards are everywhere. When you enter a class, you see a pair of longboards resting against the wall. You walk out of class, and you see students carrying their

longboards with them. Stetson longboard riders don’t miss a beat when they come out of a building after class. They’re quickly on their longboards and crusing across the historic campus. “It’s a quick way of getting there, and it’s fun,” says Andrew Roles. “Half my friends have them.” You might think that students’ rocking the sidewalks at Stetson with longboards only happens outside. Well, you would be wrong. “I was trying to get used to my longboard by using the walls in my residence hall so I wouldn’t fall,” says sophomore Holly Saulsbery. “I actually ran over my foot once with the longboard, and everyone asked me how in the world did I even manage that. There are more things to hang on to, and the floor is smoother so I get practice before I actually ride it outside.” If you’re considering a longboard, just make sure to practice before conquering the Hatter Highway. Otherwise, the longboards might end up conquering you.

If you’ve ever spent a sleepless night swatting mosquitoes, you’ll understand the manatee’s plight. Longing for rest in the warm waters of Volusia County’s Blue Spring, Florida’s manatees are being harassed by armored catfish. The invasive species attach their sucker mouths to the manatees’ skin and graze for algae. “So instead of resting, manatees expend precious energy trying to dislodge the catfish,” says Melissa Gibbs, Ph.D.,
pg. 09
associate professor of Biology and director of the Aquatic and Marine Biology Program. “Just as you or I would swat at a pesky mosquito, the manatee twitches and flips to throw off the harassing catfish.” Native to the Amazon basin, Loricariid catfish arrived in Florida in the 1950s. They gradually spread throughout the state. “Many people call them plecos and purchase them from aquarium stores to eat the algae out of fish tanks,” Gibbs says. “Trouble is they can grow to over two feet long. When
STETSON UNIVERSITY
the fish get too big for the tank, people want to get rid of them.” Reluctant to kill the catfish, aquarium owners released them into the wild, and the problem began. Already stressed by human activity, pollution and cold temperatures, the endangered Florida manatee doesn’t need any additional harassment. “It’s not too different from the python problem currently plaguing the Everglades,” Gibbs adds.
Sleepless in Blue Spring Accompanied by students, park rangers and biologists, Gibbs has removed 6,300 invasive catfish from Blue Spring. Once a month she slips into two wet suits and snorkels in the spring’s cold clear water to collect data for reproduction, age and growth studies.
“We are thrilled to work with her on this research,” says Blue Spring Park Biologist Megan Keserauskis. “We sometimes snorkel with her or follow in the canoe, collecting samples. We also walk along the boardwalk, educating visitors about the invasive catfish research.”
“We’re never going to totally get rid of them, but if we figure out more of their biology, we might be able to control the population,” she explains, adding that one more year of data must be collected before publishing the results of her studies.
Gibbs admits her colleagues “come out of the woodwork when they hear we’re going on a catfish expedition. Usually I have students every year who get really good at it, and we can remove several hundred fish in one day.” She points to Justin Walker
’12 (Aquatic and Marine Biology), who was extremely proficient at removing invasive fish while participating in the senior research program. “Justin established a reputation and interned at the Fish and Wildlife Commission. Now he’s working for them,” she says. “My students definitely get a lot of hands-on experience collecting data.” More information about the Marine Biology program at: stetson.edu/academics

John Jett, Ph.D., visiting research professor and laboratory coordinator for the Stetson biology department, used to ride killer whales for a living. Seriously. Jett was a killer whale rider and trainer for SeaWorld during the mid-1990s. He later went on to earn his master’s degree in environmental science and his doctorate in health and human performance. He’s now in Blackfish, a cutting documentary that received high praise at the Sundance Film Festival and one that’s receiving rave reviews from the world’s top film critics. The film is about the held-in-captivity majestic orcas. He’s interviewed at length about the plight of the whales. John became fascinated with marine mammals in landlocked Kansas where he grew up. “My upbringing really influenced my love of the environment, the outdoors and of animals in general,” he says. “It instilled in me a general sense of curiosity. I basically lived in the woods at the end of our street.” After completing his undergraduate degree, he worked for an environmental testing laboratory. One morning he was testing water in an amusement park near a small tank that held two bottlenose dolphins. “I interacted with the dolphins while no one was looking,” he recalls. Jett decided then and there that he wanted to work with these fascinating creatures, so he began “sending applications all over the planet. SeaWorld answered.”
pg. 15
STETSON UNIVERSITY
“ After a swim and physical fitness test, I was quickly moved to the killer whale area, where I began working and swimming with captive orcas, including Tilikum, the animal that has now killed three people,” he explains. His latest research on orcas, in fact, points to yet another reason why orcas should not be held in captivity for our enjoyment. In captivity, orcas attract swarms of mosquitoes that transmit a host of deadly diseases. “Orcas are mammals just like us, so it makes sense that they’d get the same diseases from mosquitoes that we do,” Jett says. Researchers Jett and physician Jeffrey Ventre, a friend who at one time was also a trainer with Jett at SeaWorld, teamed up to investigate the orcas. They documented the death of two orcas at SeaWorld by mosquito-transmitted viral diseases, including the West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses. “Orcas held in amusement parks are essentially immobile,” Jett says. “It’s not natural.” When you’re immobile, you become an easy target for mosquitoes. “The whales’ environmental and social requirements are simply too complex for them to be kept in captivity. It results in whales living substantially deprived lives compared to their wild counterparts,” Jett adds. His and Ventre’s research has appeared on CNN and will soon appear in the Journal of Marine Animals and Their Ecology. Jett has also appeared on CBS’s 60 Minutes and the Discovery Channel. I feel incredibly fortunate to be working with a group of students who think about complex ideas that have just as much to do with who we are as they do about the novels we read. Their ability to draw from a variety of disciplines — in this case, psychology, sociology, history and literary theory — only reinforces my belief that everything we teach at Stetson becomes a vital part of our students’ understanding of the world and the value of their place in it.
“My personal challenge as a Stetson professor is to help students realize their own potential for intellectual and personal growth and to assume their responsibility for that growth. To meet that challenge, I try to make the classroom experience intellectually intriguing and demanding as well as to enhance learning through close alliances with my students.”

I love the opportunity to help students become more passionate about their chosen subject. Learning and performing music is a very personal experience for both the student and the educator. I feel fortunate, as many of my colleagues do, to align my passion for music with a career in higher education where we get to share, engage and inspire their passion every day.
My teaching is a two-way street. Stetson students share their amazement with me. They bring fresh eyes, ears and ideas to topics I once thought I understood. For example, one of my students, Jolie Sciturro, thought we could determine if rattlesnakes actively defend their young against predators. I was skeptical. She was determined, correct and had a good experimental design. We soon published a journal article based on her research.
I teach because I believe that education is as important as personal freedom. I was raised to understand that an education levels the playing field and provides a person with the tools needed to adapt and survive the many challenges one encounters in life. I was also raised to understand that an education doesn’t guarantee success, but it makes the chances of being successful much greater.

Student AffairsChris Kandus—Vice President of Student Affairs Campus Life and Student Success plays an instrumental part in a student’s success. The classroom experience is certainly one component of what happens for our students. But what happens outside of class is just as important. Students learn about themselves, and this is what makes what they learn outside of class just as important.
Rosalie Carpenter—Dean of Students I’m the chief advocate for our students, and my job is to support and advance the student experience at Stetson. As the dean of students, we make sure there’s a vibrant campus life includes lots of student organizations like the student government association, multicultural organizations and leadership development programs. It’s important for us to provide a safe and secure campus environment so that our students can learn and flourish.

Information communications technology (ICT) – such as Internet and broadband – are changing the world, improving global economies and our quality of life, according to Stetson researchers. Shahram Amiri, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Decision and Information Sciences at Stetson and co-author of the research, has completed extensive studies on the impact of information and telecommunication technology in communities and developing nations. “We found numerous data that showed that there was a positive correlation” between ICT and growth in GDP, MacFarlane says. “Future research can build on this to examine and measure the impact of ICT on the economic growth of developing nations.”
