Stetson University College of Law is founded with Albert J. Farrah as its initial dean. It was one of very few schools to require students to enroll in “practice court.”
At just 27, Bruce Jacob ’59 argues before the U.S. Supreme Court in the landmark case Gideon v. Wainwright. He would go on to champion pro bono service and become dean in 1981.
Stetson’s Center for Excellence in Advocacy becomes the Center for Advocacy Education.
1906 Mary Stewart Howarth-Hewitt becomes the first female law student to attend Stetson. After graduating, she would become the first woman admitted to practice in Florida. She graduates in 1908.
1974 Elizabeth Leeman becomes Stetson Law’s first female full-time professor.

1995 Lisbeth Moody becomes the first female dean and first female vice president at the College of Law.

Harold Sebring, who was a judge at the Nuremburg War Trials, resigns from the Florida Supreme Court to become the first dean of the Gulfport campus.
For the second time, Stetson’s Dispute Resolution and Moot Court Boards take home the ABA Competitions Champion Award.
1955 Dean Harold Sebring implements President J. Ollie Edmunds’ vision and plan for the Gulfport law center to be modeled after the English Inns of Court.
1998 The first study abroad program, a trip to Tallinn, Estonia, launches.
2023 Stetson Law’s former law library transforms into 16,000-square-foot Advocacy Institute, offering the most courtrooms of any law school in the country.

Designed to hone skills and knowledge for those interested in pursuing careers in business law, including courses in subjects such as commercial law, taxation, and international business.

Criminal Law •
Stetson’s newest concentration prepares students for criminal practice by ensuring they take appropriate coursework and learn from those with experience in this field.

Because of our strong advocacy program, competition team work, and robust criminal clinics and externships, students can work in criminal law while still in law school.

Concentration students are individually mentored by our Criminal Law Faculty and local criminal practitioners.
Elder Law

The Center for Elder Justice is an internationally recognized hub of ideas and information in this growing area of practice.

Students participate in the nation’s largest Special Needs Trust Conference, sponsored by Stetson College of Law annually. And select students attend the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys National Conference.

Students can become editors for The Journal of Aging Law & Policy, an international journal that addresses global issues associated with aging populations.
•
Students may obtain a concentration in Elder Law by completing 21 hours of electives in the area of Elder Law or Estate Planning.
Environmental Law •
The Jacobs Law Clinic provides a much-needed public service of pro bono legal aid while affording Stetson’s law students opportunities to help represent clients with hands-on case management and the development of the advocacy skills necessary to be successful attorneys.

Have access to distinguished environmental professionals who visit campus to participate in lectures, competitions and other events relating to environmental policy.
•
Opportunity to participate in the Environmental Law—Student Teaching Program and teach as adjunct professors at the undergraduate level.

Externship opportunities with environmental agencies and organizations are available throughout the year, with the Jacobs Environmental Law Externship Fund providing financial support for concentration students for summer placements.

International Law •
Students planning a career in International Law take courses particularly applicable to this area and receive mentoring from members of the faculty with experience and interest in this field. This is intended to be a competitive program with no more than five students admitted per year.

Two esteemed international law scholars: Dagmar Rita Myslinska and Klara Polackova Van der Ploeg joined Stetson Law’s faculty as tenure-track professors. Their scholarship will enhance Stetson Law’s commitment to growing as a destination for those who are passionate about international law.

Specialized Coursework
Law and the Civil Rights Movement Travel Course •
Each summer, this experience-based course takes students to six cities to visit museums, institutes, universities, and historic sites associated with the legal history of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
Honors Program •
High-achieving students may be invited to join Stetson’s full-year Honors Program after their first year (or second year, if enrolled part-time).

Honors Program students participate in an Honors Colloquium with several faculty members.
•
Program students take a special Honors Jurisprudence Seminar.
Intellectual Property Exchange •
Open to select students interested in specializing in intellectual property law, this opportunity becomes available after the first year.

Participate in a semester exchange program with the University of New Hampshire School of Law’s Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property.

Online LLM in Elder Law As the nation’s elderly population grows, this program equips attorneys with a competitive career advantage, enhanced expertise, and opportunities to expand their practices. LLM in Environmental Law This rigorous one-year program offers advanced training for U.S. and foreign-educated attorneys. Students select from two focused tracks: •

Applicants for Stetson’s LLM programs must have received their first law degree at a law school accredited by the ABA or approved by the appropriate authority in their country. Florida and most other states require a JD degree from an accredited U.S. law school before an individual may sit for the bar examination.

The opening of the new Advocacy Institute in October 2023 is a tribute to Stetson’s decades-long legacy of excellence and ensures the College will continue its tradition of being a leader in the national advocacy community for generations to come.
Outfitted for Success Situated on Stetson Law’s historic Gulfport campus, the 16,000-square-foot facility is emblematic and functional. It offers students a modern setting to learn without leaving the campus’s majestic grounds. The Advocacy Institute offers students a quality space for practice and classes, equips them with comprehensive advocacy tools to meet the demands 12
of a fast-changing world, and makes Stetson the law school with the most courtrooms of any school in the country. Specifically, the facility features six new courtrooms, a large classroom, extensive office and collaboration space, a history and awards hall, and a renovated lobby entrance. The Institute is also home to Stetson’s Center for Advocacy Education, Center for Excellence in Elder Law, and Jacobs Law Clinic for Democracy and the Environment. It provides a space where students involved in Stetson’s various Centers and Institutes can work together, share ideas, and hone their skills across disciplines. Entering Student Scholarships Stetson Law awards multiyear scholarships to selected entering students. All admitted students are considered for scholarships; no special application is required. Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, a range of other personal accomplishments and experiences, and the ability to further the mission of the College of Law. Applicants who wish for their unique circumstances and backgrounds to be considered may include an addendum with their application. Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis. For Fall 2025, 91.5% of incoming students received a scholarship ranging from partial to full tuition. Assistance for Continuing Students Several programs provide financial assistance to students after they enroll, including a number of partial-tuition scholarships based on first-year academic performance, leadership, public service and need. Scholarships to recognize public service are also available through endowed and university funds. Stetson offers a full-tuition scholarship for a student entering his or her final year with a record of public service who plans to continue that path for three years after graduation. Stetson participates in the Department of Veterans Affairs Yellow Ribbon Program, which offers tuition assistance to student veterans or eligible dependents.

Federal Financial Aid Students seeking financial aid must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year they wish to receive federal student funds. The FAFSA becomes available each year on October 1st and can be completed online at studentaid.gov. Make sure to include Stetson College of Law’s federal school code (E00342) in order to have your application sent to us electronically. Once we receive your application, we will process it for your full eligibility and send you an offer letter. Your offer letter will detail the funds being offered, any applicable fees and interest rates, and the additional steps you will need to take in order to ensure timely disbursement of your aid. Living Expenses
Tuition and Costs
Living expense budget projections are based on a 9-month budget and also on double occupancy. Living arrangements are available at stetson.edu/ law/financial-planning. Students who complete the FAFSA will be offered a financial aid package to cover the full cost of attendance (including living expenses), although many students choose not to accept the full amount of loan aid offered. Our estimated cost of attendance is based on local living expense averages. Students should reduce expenses wherever possible.
The cost of a legal education includes tuition, fees, books and supplies, housing and food, transportation, and personal expenses. The Office of Student Financial Planning develops student budgets that estimate an individual student’s projected educational expenses for the academic year. Costs are based on a nine-month period. These budgets govern the total amount of aid (loans or a combination of scholarships and loans) that are available to a student in any given year.
