Founded in 1900, Stetson University College of Law is Florida’s first law school. With its main law campus in Gulfport and a satellite campus in Tampa, Stetson is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and has been a member of the Association of American Law Schools since 1931.
Stetson Law is ranked one of the best in the nation for trial advocacy and legal writing. In addition to the juris doctor law degree, Stetson offers certificates of concentration in advocacy, business law, elder law, environmental law, international law, and social justice advocacy, dual-degree programs for the J.D./ M.B.A., J.D./M.I.E.B.L. and J.D./M.I.N.T.E.C., Joint J.D./LL.M. in Advocacy, and LL.M. degrees in advocacy, elder law, and international law. Stetson also offers advanced M.J. degrees for non-lawyers who wish to obtain a greater understanding of legal systems and concepts in the areas of international business, elder law, and healthcare compliance.
Stetson is home to the Centers for Excellence in Advocacy, Elder Law, Higher Education Law and Policy, and International Law, and Institutes for the Advancement of Legal Communication, Biodiversity Law, Caribbean Law and Policy, and Veterans Law. Stetson offers international programs in eight countries.
An international leader in advocacy education, Stetson has a long-standing record of championships at the international, national, regional, and state levels of interscholastic competition. Students can further expand their practical experience by participating in clinical or externship opportunities.
Stetson University’s DeLand campus is home to the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, and School of Music.
The Symbols of Commencement
Academic Regalia: Academic disciplines are noted by color; law is represented as purple. The doctoral gown has bell sleeves with velvet chevrons on the sleeves and velvet on the panels. The hood is bound and edged with purple velvet and lined with green, the official color of Stetson University as the institution conferring the degree. The tam combines the symbolism of the book and that of a privileged guild. Students graduating with anticipated honors wear a gold tassel on the tam (J.D.)/cap (M.J.), and others wear a purple tassel denoting the discipline of law.
Students wearing purple cords are LL.M. graduates. Drab cords are worn by students graduating with the J.D./M.B.A. Purple and white cords are worn by students graduating with the Master of Jurisprudence. Gold cords are worn by students graduating with anticipated honors. Student leadership recognitions wear green cords. Student academic leaders and named award recipients wear green and white cords. Students wearing blue cords
have earned the William F. Blews Pro Bono Service Award. Students wearing red, white and blue cords represent U.S. Military Veterans. Students wearing gold, blue and red cords are members of Phi Delta Phi, an international legal honor society.
The Mace: The Stetson University Mace, used during all commencement ceremonies, is a ceremonial staff used as a symbol of the right to confer degrees. The Stetson mace, designed by Episcopalian Canon Edward Nason West of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York, was presented to President J. Ollie Edmunds in 1956.
The Medallion: The President’s Medallion, worn at official academic occasions, was first used for the inauguration of President John E. Johns in 1969. The silver medallion includes the University Seal embraced by a wreath of laurel. The circular seal, adopted between 1889 and 1891, bears the motto Pro Deo et Veritate (“For God and Truth”) and the Light of Truth resting on the Book of Wisdom.
