Class meets Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 until 3:45. Studio format with required attendance at all lectures.

Overview Questioning and re-defining the role of contemporary art in the city, we will collectively analyze Miami's public space under a broader lens, from the guts and systems of the city, through low density residential and into the urban fabric, public art opportunities will be explored as responses to spatial, communicational, economical, functional and social circumstances.

Public space interpreted as all other space that is not private, Miami's diverse urban conditions and scales, the city, the district, the sprawl, the mall, the highway network, the relationship with water; understanding its infrastructure and identity will be the focus of our research.

Place-making and space-reclaiming from macro to micro, we will experiment with strategies that create new relationships with the immediate urban context through way-finding, environmental, educational activation or manifestation as well as free expression: reveal, connect, divide, exchange, dialogue, identify, interact, encounter, represent, participate; exploring art in its capacity to instigate change, reveal hidden relationships and raise awareness.

Requirements Students will be responsible for developing two projects.

The first assignment will explore the city from a macro scale, focusing on art as infrastructure and engaging with Miami's systems of: water, waste, power, transportation, suburbia.

Students will investigate these topics and present findings and proposals selecting a scale of intervention and site and exploring themes of: awareness, re-use, education, material efficiency, orientation, identity, time, place. One of the main focus is to understand and explore the possibility of educating and creating public awareness on issues surrounding infrastructure as well as revelaing its hidden mechanisms, forms and processes.

The second assignment, of a duration of 3 weeks, is centered on the design of a siteless sculptural piece using a a given object as a generator. Students will choose an object from a given selection of 5 readymades extracted from the previously studied systems (water, power, transportation, waste and suburbia) and apply formal and conceptual operations to it (repeat, stack, cut, slice, scale, mirror, multiply, etc) for the creation of a bigger assembly that can work as a sculpture in public space. The goal of this assignment is to exercise the capacity of design improvisation and plastic exploration by using the readymade as a modular component or as a system, taking advantage of its unique properties and original features.

A series of geometrical and spatial studies will be developed during the course of two weeks; the last week students will work on preliminary studies around the selection and adaptation of the piece to a site in Miami, focusing on scale and orientation.

Every class will open with presentation of an art-work by the instructors; throughout the semester students will be researching precedent art-works that relate to and inspire their projects. Students will share research and project ideas once a week. Students may work individually or in groups of two / three (more developed results will be expected from groups) only for the firts assignment. Students are expected to consult the bibliography, complete readings and quote ideas/thoughts/information in their proposals.

The collective research and projects of the class will be compiled throughout the semester in a BOOK. All material (including and not limited to precedents, research, analysis and proposals) shall be formatted using an In-Design template available on the blackboard. Precedents files should be exported as Hi-res PDF and uploaded to the blackboard weekly.

Traffic Statistics

Traffic studies that we conducted on SR-836 showed that there is heavy traffic during -According to the TomTom Traffic Index, Miami’s rush hour in the morning and in the evening. traffic is the 7th worst in the US Yet the road is fairly clear at midday and -The traffic and congestion gets progressively worse after nightfall. Technology of LED Panels Through the use of LED panels all over the world, various technological breakthroughs have occurred and LED panels have become more affordable and environmentally friendly. According to D3 LED, which is one of the top digital display manufacturers in the world, with just a few moves, an entire display could be switched out. Through the use of morphing algorithms, the panels all appear to change colors seamlessly and efficiently to the human eye. In order to conserve power, many LED displays do not have bulbs distributed evenly throughout the panel, it is usually more dense towards the bottom to achieve a higher resolution and more spread out towards the top. Each panel has its own MAC address, which allows maintenance technicians to be able to identify exactly where the problems may be located. The software that is generally used to control these panels is sophisticated enough to be able to maneuver around most problems so that an entire display is not off at any particular moment. There is also very important software which deals with blocking hackers from being able to destroy the entire system. Intrusion detection systems must be running at all times. These are all very important factors when considering the best way to have a controlled digital display.

Concept: Flexible LED panels will be placed to form the barriers on SR-836. These panels will be illuminated in various colors just as roads are color-coded on the Waze app in order to inform drivers of the current traffic status. The panels will be synced with one another and will be controlled through a data network connection. This allows for the colors to be changed almost instantaneously and in the event that an error may occur, it can be corrected remotely. Another benefit of having it be connected through Wi-Fi is that Waze also runs on a data network connection. Therefore, drivers may continue to use the existing Waze app to alert other drivers about accidents, hazards, traffic, police, etc., just as they are accustomed to doing.

Another component that will be placed on the highway is LED panels that will wrap around the structural elements of the highway, as part of the architecture.This allows the Waze alert icons to appear on these screens in advance of encountering one of these issues. These flexible LED panels will be secured onto walls and pillars of the highway at various junctions throughout the highway. The precise distance away from the particular alert will be displayed on the panels as well. This allows for drivers to best navigate the roads with all of the information literally in front of them.

Environment From all of these renderings it is clear to see how many different types of junctions there are on SR836. The use of colors in these specific areas are where there is usually particularly more traffic than in other areas of the highway. Although LED lights are much more environmentally friendly in general, and last much longer than standard light bulbs, and therefore in many ways are much more cost efficient, they can still cost a lot money to maintain in such a large application such as a highway. Therefore, we suggest only using the LED panels in select areas of the highway. The moments of the highway that are typically more congested and will need these panels are when there are exits and crossing of highways above. Therefore most of the panels will only be placed in these areas.

Icons We did an exercise to see what icons we could come up with to represent the same alerts that waze has but with a comical twist. We chose a donut to represent police, as the stereotype of police is that they eat donuts. We also chose a lego block to represent a hazard on the road, since the hazard is usually blocking the flow of traffic.

Another icon we chose was a car slipping on a banana peel to represent a car accident, because banana peels usually symbolize a fall of some sort.

On April 17, 1986, the Metromover opened up its first loop of the Downtown area to help aleviate the heavy traffic that was starting to form because of the new constructions.

The city of Miami also wanted to help people who commute daily to Downtown for work to not have to spend so much time looking for parking, instead they could leave their cars at the stations and get on the Metromover.

Seeing the success of the Metromover, the city decided to create two more loops that would cover the Brickell area and the ret of the Downtown Area.

These loops were called the Brickell loop and the Omni loop, these were added on May 26, 1994.

The Metromover was created in order to encourage people to explore and use di erent methods of alternative transportation.

The Metromover was connected to the Metrorail in two di erent stations to help connect everyone.

College students in the Downtown area bene tted from the addition of the Metromover because it took them to a stop directly infront of Miami Dade Wolfson Campus.

The stops help bring people to the major destinations and tourist attractions like the Amercan Airlines Arena, Bayside Market Plaza, the Frost Museum, and Bayfront park.

The Metromover carts have multiple windows all along the sides and the ends to allow people who travel on them to experience the distinct parts of the Brickell and Downtown areas.

When is rst became operational, the eet of cars consisted of 29 of them. These number of carts were needed in order to be able to arrive at stations fast and constantly and to not have people waiting in the stations for too long.

The carts are able to arrive every 90 seconds during rush hour to the stations to help people move faster, and then every 3 minutes during the o peak hours.

Some buildings in the downtown area actually embraced the Metromover and built incorporating it into their design.

The city of Miami had to dig deep into their pockets to build the Metromover as it wasn’t going to be a cheap build.

The total cost for the Metromover was $154 million.

With an annual cost of $9 million for operations, maintenance, and cleaning.

Throughout time, the carts that make up the eet have been replaced for other carts that are an upddated version of the original carts.

These new carts were meant to be bigger in order to help move more people.

A big change made to the new carts was that they were made more aerodynamic in order to reduce the drag of air and be able to move faster and require less energy, therefore, saving the city some money.

In 2008, 12 of the carts were replaced 2010, the other 17 carts were replaced.

•The MetroMover consists of a total of 21 different stations •There are 3 different routes within the MetroMover, which are the Brickel loop, Omni Loop and the Inner Loop.

• All three routes intersect at seven different stations which are Government Center, Knight Center, Bayfront Park, First Street, College/Bayside, College North and Wilkie D. Fergurson, Jr. •The MetroMover is free of charge •All the cars are electrically powered •The MetroMover goes at an average speed of 9 mph •The average number of riders per day is 33,000 •The total length of all routes covered is 4.4 miles. and goes through the majority of downtown with strategically placed stations that connects all major buildings in downtown • The schedule for the MetroMover is as followed: Monday-Thursday from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Friday from 5 a.m. to midnight Saturday 6 a.m. to midnight Sunday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

•The Government Center is a station where all three routes intersect, as well as where the Metrorail and a Bus Station run through. This makes this station the busiest and the one that has the most people at any given time.

•That makes this a very ideal opportunity and spot to take advantage of since many people pass through this point •While waiting in the station for the MetroMover, it is a very dark and uncomfortable space •Even as one approaches the station from the MetroMover, you move through a series of columns, that gives this unpleasant feeling of enclosure •This is a great opportunity to propose an idea that livens the atmosphere, not only as one is waiting for the Metromover, but as well as one is approaching this station.

•All three MetroMover routes pass through this station •This station consists of a very large passageway or almost a cave in which one goes through as they stop at the station.

•This very large opening runs through a building •Here we saw a very good opportunity to incorporate both plant life along with lighting to enhance the experience one feels as they make their way through this

In the caves, we have decided to take advantage of the vast opening in which the MetroMover penetrates and have decided to implemement a vertical garden along it’s walls.

This way we are able to decorate the plain platforms and create a functional green space.

The reason we decided to implement a green space was due to the fact that there is not much vegetation, let alone di erent varieties of it, throughout downtown, with the exception of the PAMM, and the newly openened Frost Museum of Science, and it’s adjacent park.

We also wanted to focus on enhancing the path of the MetroMover, so the individuals that go aboard on it have something to feast their eyes upon.

Green Spaces alone were not enough to enhance this massive opening, as we soon realised, there are no light sources throughout the path the MetroMover follows, the only type of light it gets is the light it receives from the adjacent and perpendicular streets it travels by, or any nearby building, so we decided to experiment with di erent types of arti cial lighting, and this was one of the rst ideas we had, which was to implement LED strips which run horizontally accross the platform following the same movemement that the MetroMover itself follws, this way it will light up the way, as well as make an impact on the passengers which aesthetically enhancing this “Cave�. The reason we decided to go with blue, is because blue lighting does not harm plants in any type of way, due to its cool, and a subtle lighting.

As we continued to develop, we started trying to gure out ways in how to interfere with the geometry of the space using LED strips, or panels in order to enhance the openings.

This is another one of the main openings in which the Metro Mover goes through during his path.

As you can see, it is very narrow and has no type of light penetration except the light at the end of the tunnel.

This is one of it’s stop, and as you can tell, at knight time, it would not be one of the most pleasant places to be in.

Near the Government Center Stop the three di erent loop are presented to one another, in this case, one of them is below the other two, as you can clearly see on these images, there is no source of light anywhere, unlike most of the time, the MetroMover is nowhere near the street; it’s typical source of lighting.

So this time, it has to depend on the sun in order to light up the way for its travelers be able to see forward. But what happens after 7pm?

During the night time, there will be no light anywhere near this stop, except for its platform.

This was a very important point for us, since the three di erent loops meet and travel along one another, so we wanted to implement some type of lighting, and still maintain it e cient, so we decided to run strips all through the bottom of the tracks, thus incrasing the light coming from the roof for the bottom MetroMover, and enhancing the lights that are engul ng the track for the other two movers.

The stop for Government Center is very massive, yet there is no light penetrating the structure, only type of light that comes into the site is through the gaps in which the MetroMover travels through.

This is our proposal for the Government Stop, we decided to implemement the same grid of LED strips as on the previous design with blue ourecent lighting in order to not harm the plants.

We also decided to implememnt planters at the center of the pores along it’s roof, so they become hanging gardens for everyone to witness, due to its dark-ish atmosphere, these planters would be sort of special type of plants that persevere in dark places with minimal exposure to natural light. 27 28

Art in Public Spaces Macro to Micro Scale Art as Infrastructure: Water Miami Canals

Proposal: In Miami, there are approximately 168 miles of canals. The canals were built as an interconnecting network in the early 20th century for drainage, flood protection and water storage. Spreading out and branching through many neighborhoods and backyards, they also served as a place for recreation.

Though over the decades, canals have become polluted and neglected. Many canals are also subject to stagnant water which promoted the growth of algae, attracts mosquitos and has other harmful effects on the canal and surrounding ecosystem. Soil erosion of the land lining the canal is also a risk. In so many places water can be used as scenery and usually featured as a relaxing place of leisure, but in a city like Miami, canals are so common that they have become underappreciated.

My proposal is to transform the canals appearance both during the day and night to promote their significance and aesthetics to the city they serve. This will be done in three ways: 1-Reflectivity is a very important effect of water. Lining the canals, highly polished (environmentally-safe) stone, most likely granite walls will be installed. These walls will replace the existing infrastructure that the canals currently run through, much of which is crumbling away. These walls will create a barrier from the land that runs along them preventing soil erosion and runoff. These highly polished walls will reflect the water creating a more emphasizing effect.

2-For the evening, LED lights will be installed under or right above the water. They will operate much like the tower lights on the Empire State Building, colors coordinated towards important dates and holidays. Most nights the lights will just change color every few minutes featuring different colors along the progression of the canals. These lights will both enhance the appearance of the water and the effect they have on the stone walls.

1-The final part will be a system of pumps installed in the least invasive way to the fish, alligator, snakes and other animals that occupy the canal. These pumps will address the issue of stagnant water and also create a unique looking current from where they are placed in the middle of the canal slightly above the baseline.

With these three installments, it is hoped that both the appreciation and recognition of canals will return or rise and be looked at as an effort of further beautifying the city and emphasis of water on our lives.

Canal Paths throughout the City: The canal lining 109th Avenue runs West to East. Of the other canals in the city it is the longest and most continuous of the canals in the city. To the West, the canal leads out of the city and continues and eventually dissipates into the Everglades.

“Trash� to some will be collected from popular areas on the beach, to remind tourist and locals of the importance of keeping the beach clean..

The idea is to take the beach street lanterns and create a garbage light instillation. Wrapping each pole with trash that’s found on the beach.

The recyclables will be painted a solid uniform color

Lights will be added within the instillation to illuminate outward and cast unique shadows

Trash Bench

This bench embodies the same design concept as the light pole. Taking trash from South Beach tourist areas and creating a visual representation of the waste problem on the beach.

WHAT: Waste Facilities WHERE: Florida, USA HOW: Represented in the map below are all waste related facilieties through out Florida. There are a total of 687 facilities available and from those 317 are recycling facilities, 11 are incinerators, and 53 and landfills.

ASHES ARE DUMPED INTO LARGE BARREN AREAS. ‘MOUNT TRASHMORE”

INSIDE THE TRANSFER STATION GARBAGE IS SORTED AS EFFICIENTLY AS POSSIBLE TO RECYCLE MATERIALS SUCH AS TIRES FOR BASKETBALL COURTS AND PORCELAIN FOR ROADS.

A FIFTH OF GARBAGE CONSISTS OF FOOD SCRAPS. THIS TYPE OF WASTE PRODUCES A BROWN LIQUID CALLED LEACHATE AND IS USED TO MAKE COMPOST AND BIOGAS IN SPECIAL FACILITIES.

DID YOU KNOW: FLORIDA PROHIBITS THE DISPOSAL OF LEAD-ACID OR NICKEL CADMIUM RECHARGABLE BATTERIES INTO YOUR REGUALAR DAILY TRASH? THIS IS DUE TO THE HIGH PERCENTAGE OF TRASH BEING INCINERATED IN THIS STATE. THE BURNING OF ANY BATTERY AS WELL AS OTHER HAZARDOUS MATERIAL RELEASE CHEMICAL EMMISIONS HAZARDOUS TO LIVING CREATURES.

GARBAGE INCINERATION FACILITIES OPERATES 24 HOURS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK GARBAGE IS BURNED AT 1800 DEGREES AND THEN THE ASHES COOLED WITH WATER. THE ASHES ARE THEN PLACED ON A CONVEYOR BELT FOR MAGNETS TO REMOVE ANY POSSIBLE METALS WHICH ARE SOLD FOR SCRAPS. HEAT FROM THE BURNING GARBAGE TURNS WATER IN THE BOILERS INTO STEAM WHICH OPERATES A TURBINE TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY FOR UP TO 45,000 HOUSEHOLDS

NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT

MOST OTHER COUNTRIES THAT TRY BURNING THEIR WASTE ARE NOT DOING IT PROPERLY. IT CAN RENDER VERY EXPENSIVE TO HAVE A DECENT WASTE BURNING FACILITY THAT COVERS ALL REGULATIONS AGAISNT AIR POLLUTION AND THEREFORE IT TYPICALLY DISCOURAGES MOST GOVERMENTAL CONTRIBUTION. IF GARBAGE IS NOT BURNED PROPERLY THEN WE ARE CONTRIBUTING TO AIR- POLLUTION AND THEREFORE, BURNING GARBAGE STOPS BEING A SOLLUTION. SLOWLY CITIES ARE RUNNING OUT OF SPACE FOR LANDFILLS AND EVENTUALLY END UP HAVING TO TRAVEL FURTHER AND FURTHER FOR DUMP SITES. RECYCLING IS A PRIMARY SOLUTION BUT WHEN WASTE CANT BE RECYCLED ANOTHER SOLUTION HAS TO BE ADOPTED.

MOUNT TRASHMORE AND MORE

OPERATING SINCE 1965

THERE A FEW PLACES LIKE MOUNT TRASHMORE ALL ALONG THE TURNPIKE NORTHBOUND FROM MIAMI THAT GIVE FLORIDA THE APPEARANCE OF HAVING SOME TOPOGRAPHY, BUT THEY ARE THE ASH MOUNDS FROM BURNED WASTE COVERED IN 18 IN OF SOIL (REQUIRED 6 IN.) MOUNT TRASHMORE UNDERWENT A LAWSUIT THROUGH BROWARD COUNTY AND THE OWNER, WASTE MANAGEMENT, HAD TO PAY $1.6 MILLION IN FINES BY 2013 FOR VIOLATING AIR STANDARDS AND ALSO AGREED TO USE A GREATER AMOUNT OF ODOR NEUTRALIZING CHEMICALS.

PROJECTION WALL BRINGING AWARENESS TO AN ISSUE THAT SHOULD CONCERN EVERYONE.

PROJECTION WALL THE INSTALLATION WILL CONSIST OF RECYCLED CLOTH SCREENS HELD IN PLACE BY RECYCLED METAL PIPES FOR POLES AND WILL FACE THE TURNPIKE OR MAIN ROAD DEPENDING ON LOCATION OF MOUNT. THIS PROJECT IS MEANT TO CATCH THE ATTENTION OF DRIVERS PASSING BY IN ORDER TO INVOKE A CURIOSITY. WE LIVE IN A DAY AND TIME WHERE ALL THINGS THAT SPIKE OUR CURIOSITY CAN BE ‘GOOGLED’ AND THIS IS WHERE THE WORD WILL SPREAD ABOUT THE PROCESSES OUR WASTE GOES THROUGH. THE SUBJECT OF WASTE IS STILL VERY TABOO AND OFTEN OVERLOOKED BEING THE NUMBER ONE REASON WHY MOST PEOPLE DONT KNOW HOW TO OR CARE VERY LITTLE TO RECYCLE. A Ton of Rocks South Florida rock miners would be spared millions of dollars they now pay to protect wetlands and the state’s largest drinking water supply on the fringes of Miami-Dade County under a bill making its way through the Legislature.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Manny Diaz Jr. and Sen. Rene Garcia, both Hialeah Republicans, would cut fees by 83 percent, ending what was supposed to be an insurance policy for the county against the risk of con- tamination posed by rock mining.

Under the legislation, fees now set at 60 cents for every ton of rock mined would drop to 10 cents.

“If the well eld has to be shut down because of [contamination] there will be a problem and that will be be- cause of mining,” said John Adornato, regional director of the National Parks Conservation Association.

Manufacturing Miami / Suburbs On the assembly line made famous by Henry Ford, products moved down a conveyor belt to stationary workers. Levitt inverted Ford's system by having the workers move "down the line" to a stationary product—the individual house site.

Work crews performed the same specialized task at each house site. Some laid slabs, some framed. One man's job consisted of bolting washing machines into the oor.

Whatever its drawbacks, Levitt's system was enormously productive. His Levittowns were the fastest built developments in the history of American residential construction.

While many supplies were shipped in, some materials were made on site. A cement hopper and gravel pit set up in the Lakeside section produced concrete for house slabs. After construction was completed, Levitt ood- ed the pit to create a community lake.

The next part of this assignments was to create a series of iterations using the original form, and manipulating it slightly to meet intentional requirements. The first iteration studied was an intersection of the light posts.

To take this iteration further, I intersected the light post again diagonally. This form would become the foundation to my final proposal

Continuing with this crisscrossing form, I repeated the form. In this study, I overlapped the lights from one form to another to establish and further emphasize the relationship they repeated forms have to each other

From there, I created a larger grid system influenced by this overlapping situation

My final design reflects a situation of lights where the rows and their density lessened moved as moving away from the center

The last step was to give context to the project by placing it in a site. The site selected is a plot of land located at NE 36th Street and 1st Avenue in Miami

At night, the lighting creates an effect that increases which increases as one moves closer to the center of the space

From the ground, the center where the light is greatest draws in viewers and influences them to move where the light is better as the light from the lights farthest from the center are not so bright, their amount, position and height farthest from the ground.
