Life. Transforming. Gifts. 2020 ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING

Steppingstone envisions a more just and equitable world where all students can actualize the life-transforming benefits of a college degree. Approved by the Board of Directors in 2020, a new vision crystallized the aspirations of the entire Steppingstone community.

GIFTS FROM THE HEART

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart—thank you all—for being there for Steppingstone. Amid these uncertain times, your support has sustained and inspired us. It has meant the world to me. As a community, we have so much to celebrate and be grateful for: extraordinary Scholars and families, amazing staff, dedicated board members and volunteers, and passionate Alumni. And you, our supporters. In the pages that follow, we look back to celebrate the difference you made in fiscal year 2020. The year bridged two very different realities, beginning with the seeming limitless possibilities of 2019 and ending with the heightened sense of anxiety and vulnerability of 2020. In those last months that academic year, as the far-reaching consequences of COVID19 came into focus, I saw with even greater clarity the promise that Steppingstone stands for and delivers. Every year, along with showing your steadfast belief in our mission, your gifts have a direct impact on all facets of our work. In giving, you help us serve over 1,500 students and their families. At the same time, you support our efforts on the national front, building connections and lifting up best practices for enhancing college access and success. Given all of the challenges—especially those faced by historically marginalized communities—what we’re providing is more essential now than ever. In a recent profile, one of our extraordinary Scholars made that point beautifully. Now a high school senior, she spoke about her commitment to “give my all” in school and life, a lesson she’d taken to heart from her late grandmother. Early on, Steppingstone helped her to imagine a brighter future. Next fall, she’ll become the very first in her family to go to college. “Steppingstone has my heart,” she said. Again, thank you for being part of our Steppingstone family. With your support, it’s exciting to imagine all that we can achieve together. I know amazing things are ahead.

“KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY”

As I think about how to express what your gifts meant to Steppingstone in 2020, I find myself coming back to the words of one of our amazing Alumni. I cherish his note of thanks, graciously sent to me in reply to a community “thank you” message from me. He wrote in part to share what it means to him to be the beneficiary of “so much kindness and generosity from some truly incomparable human beings.” His deepest wish: to one day pass on that generosity to as many people as possible. “I love the concept of paying it forward,” he concluded. He’s one of thousands of participants of the life-transforming programs made possible by your own generosity. Your investment helps to support more than 1,500 Scholars and their families through 12+ years of academic, social-emotional, and college-readiness services crucial to navigating their paths to college graduation. This and every year, we share this annual report with you to express our enduring gratitude. It’s one more way to give thanks to you for being part of the Steppingstone family. We truly cannot do this work without you. The honor roll at the heart of this publication celebrates the extraordinary generosity shown by you and fellow donors in fiscal year 2020, the period of July 2019 through June 2020. With our 30th anniversary on the horizon, it was a vitally important year of looking back and ahead. Immersed in a comprehensive strategic planning process, we examined everything from our mission statement to program structure and services. We were excited and energized by the opportunity to take a deep dive into what we do well and what we can do better. As always, your gifts had an extraordinary impact. In this moment, the visionary work of Steppingstone has never been more needed. If anything, 2020 has affirmed we cannot stop in our quest for a more just and equitable world. That will keep driving us. Today, in a world so urgently in need of hope, healing, and change, the more than 1,500 Scholars represent a brighter future. Their achievements represent hope to their families, to their communities, and to generations of students to come. Thank you for your “kindness and generosity” and for all you do to make Scholars’ dreams of college a reality.
