PERFORMANCE NOTE:

The opening solo should be sung very freely and expressively. Grace notes should be placed on the beat, they should not be emphasized too strongly or given undue attention, since their function is strictly ornamental. A piano may be substituted for the guitar. If piano is used instead of guitar, the part should be played one octave lower than written.

PROGRAM NOTE:

“Whalen’s Fate” is a lumberman’s song which mourns the death of a comrade chosen for a dangerous assignment — namely, that of breaking up a log jam. The original tune has been preserved, but paired with new harmonies and a guitar accompaniment.
