Getting the Word Out about Cancer—Now What?

A Visit to Michigan Kenneth C. Haugk, Ph.D., author of Cancer—Now What?, and Program Director Joel Bretscher were invited to visit Michigan to speak at several events about the book, the challenges cancer brings to patients and families, and how others can best offer care and support.

“Navigating the Cancer Journey” Event Every fall, the Crossroads Counseling Center in Frankenmuth, Michigan, and the Saginaw Valley Stephen Ministry Alliance hold a community education event. Nearly 250 people attended this event, titled “Navigating the Cancer Journey,” to hear Ken talk about his experience. Ken shared about walking alongside his wife, Joan, after her cancer diagnosis, and offered practical ideas for providing care and support to those dealing with cancer.

Cancer—Now What? in the Media Ken appeared on a news broadcast on ABC-12 WJRT, which serves Flint, Saginaw, and Bay City. Along with Mike Redford of Crossroads Counseling, Ken was interviewed about Cancer—Now What? and the “Navigating the Cancer Journey” event.

Ken, Joel, and Mike Redford were also featured on The Art Lewis Show on WSGW radio in Saginaw, fielding questions for an hour about Cancer—Now What?, Ken’s experience with cancer, and the Wednesday evening event.

Cancer—Now What? at Covenant Cancer Care Center Ken and Joel also visited Covenant Cancer Care Center in Saginaw, which gives copies of Cancer—Now What? to chemotherapy patients. There, they spoke to oncology nurses, physicians, and other staff about dealing with cancer from a patient’s perspective. Later, at Covenant’s annual Women’s Cancer Survivors event, Ken talked with members of the center’s patient advisory committee, which reviewed the book and recommended it to Covenant.

Cancer—Now What? in the Central Michigan Community Ken and Joel met with Jeanna Rogner, organizer of the regional Bringin’ Back the 80s Festival— an annual event that raises thousands of dollars each year for cancer-related causes, such as creating and distributing over 200 chemotherapy care kits to cancer patients each year. Every care kit now features a copy of Cancer—Now What?

The Saginaw Valley Stephen Ministry Alliance has also been making copies of the book available to the community at large, including at a local credit union and the Frankenmuth Farmer’s Market.

Cancer—Now What?: Making a Powerful Difference One woman Ken and Joel met during their trip received a copy of Cancer—Now What? after her diagnosis and has been using it ever since, highlighting and writing extensive notes in it and always keeping it close at hand.

“The opportunity to listen to so many people’s stories and share with them was extremely valuable,” said Ken.

Cancer—Now What? is a book to give to those with cancer and their loved ones, empowering them to navigate the medical, emotional, relational, and spiritual challenges ahead. The book draws on the author’s personal experience, as well as research with over 3,500 cancer survivors, loved ones of people with cancer, and medical professionals, resulting in a caring, how-to resource.
