is arguably the most positive perspective one can take in viewing the month of September when the BVI environment changes into one conducive toward perfect meditation conditions. More commonly known as a ‘ghost-town’ at this point in time, multiple BVI establishments and services shut down for a breather and a noticeable mass of residents seek vacation, either for relaxation, a cure for the infamous ‘island fever’, re-acquaintance with family and friends abroad, or all three at the same time – by the way, just in case you’re curious, island fever isn’t some fierce, flesh-eating disease; it’s simply a term used to define the necessity to travel off island with the intention of resurrecting the great appreciation we have for this location. For those remaining here, tranquillity is the gift to enjoy with considerably less motorists on the roads, generally quieter activity on the streets, and the closure of many businesses. With the concept of reflection in mind, September’s VIPY magazine does precisely that with a listing of the best articles of the Skipper’s Tips column from throughout the year, a look at the enjoyment in real life ‘staycation’ in residing at Cooper Island Beach Club, and below, congratulations to all the winners of our more interactive segments of the magazine. A huge highlight this month is in our Yacht Spotlight column, where we took great pleasure in reviewing one of the BVI’s most famous yachts, Necker Belle—renowned entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson’s luxurious catamaran. In this quiet month of thoughtfulness, we are sadly saying farewell to aLookingGlass’s Senior Graphic Designer Scott Taylor and his family, Dawn, Cooper and Sawyer, who are leaving the island for greener pastures. Although we are extremely moved by Scott’s departure, we wish him all the best and in reflection, are appreciative that we had the pleasure of knowing him. Fortunately, his skills will still be at our disposal, keeping the magazine appearance fresh and innovative. In closing, we impart our opinion to take a much deserved break during this quiet time in preparation for the next busy season that will commence in October.

CONTRIBUTORS Geoffrey Brooks Geoffrey is the curator of the Virgin Islands Maritime Museum and both pioneers and takes part in many of the initiatives related to the traditional art of sloop building.

Traci O’Dea Traci is a poet, journalist, editor, educator, and essayist. She lives in the British Virgin Islands where she teaches at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. Her work has appeared in 32 Poems, Poetry Daily, Bird’s Eye View, Virgin Islands Property & Yacht, Limin’ Times, and elsewhere. She also serves as an editor for the poetry journal Smartish Pace.

Shannon Gore Originally from the US, Dr Gore has been in the BVI for over 13 years and is an environmental consultant, specialising in coastal zone management. Starting out as a marine biologist for the VI government, her experience and passion continues today as the owner of her own company and managing director of the local non-profit Association of Reef Keepers (ARK).

Heidi Schumann Heidi recently moved from San Francisco to Virgin Gorda with her family to join the BVI Sotheby’s International Realty team in Tortola and launch the Virgin Gorda office. With September being a quiet month in the BVI –

a time of peace and reflection – we decided to review the best of Skipper’s Tips from our contributor’s articles, spanning the last year. Skipper’s Tips is a column in VIPY that has been running for several years now and offers hints and skills to captains as well as anyone sailing BVI waters. In preparation for the 2014/ 2015 high season, here are VIPY’s top five favourites: No. 5 – The All Important Annual Haul Out “Indeed, every boat needs to come out of the water at least once a year so that you can inspect your through-hulls, cutlass bearings, shaft seals, and general watertight integrity. Take advantage of the summer haul out to get this work done. Annual boat maintenance like replacing zincs, bottom paint or exercising sea-cocks, can be conveniently done and would save later expense on an emergency haul out if anything below the waterline fails when cruising.” No. 4 – The Catamaran Soars in Popularity! “Even the people who prefer monohulls have moved to using catamarans on vacation and once visitors have chartered a cat, it’s unlikely they will return to a mono. “Certainly this is the perfect vessel for family vacations as she sails flat and safe. The kids have room to play on the trampolines, imbibing while underway is smooth, the boat is incredibly easy to manoeuvre in close quarters, and all are equipped with generators to power the air conditioning. The lure is tremendous and this remains a lifestyle choice with attractive aesthetics, arguably superior to monohulls.”

It is with incredible awe that we review the

famous catamaran Necker Belle owned by Sir Richard Branson – breezing into our spotlight. As one of the most renowned yachts in the Virgin Islands, the 105ft catamaran with a 46ft beam is named after Sir Branson’s home and favourite hideaway, Necker Island. With an excellent crew in Captain Beez Evans, Chief Stewardess Thandi Shalili, First Mate Mario Swainson, Chef Venesa Jorgensen, Dive Instructor and Hostess Grace Abel, Deckhand Chris Kruger, and Engineer Shamus Baier—who all confer an indulgent service—the yacht made her debut in France and

travelled as far as the Pacific, where she was refitted in 2009 and emerged as Necker Belle in 2010. She made the return journey to the Atlantic via the Panama Canal with the Caribbean as her residency for the foreseeable future. owards the end of the 1930’s Virgin Island shipwrights began to build larger sloops which broke away from the unique design that had been used for over 150 years. These sloops had bow sprits, they were cutter rigged (that is they carried two or more jibs in front of the mast) and they were gaff rigged on the mainsail. One of the earliest was the Yolanda built by Leopold Smith in Road Town. As the economy began to change in the 1950’s, bigger cargo boats were needed to carry construction materials for the growth in new housing, hence the need for larger sloops. In 1952, Osmond Davies built the 40ft Bells of St Mary in East End. Later came the Parham Town by Edward Frett at 45ft and finally, the sloop we are concerned with, the Amanda Stoutt built in 1956 by Claremon Floyd Davies. She was 42ft in length. Amanda Stoutt was built for Captain Warren Stoutt of Little Apple Bay – she was a fine boat and very fast; however, one problem these larger sloops faced was that they were difficult to control. The length of the boom and the large size of the mainsail made them hard to handle. Someone once told

me that a single person could not hold the tiller on Amanda Stoutt and that many times they would have to tie a line on the tiller just to maintain course. The answer to this problem was to transcend from sloops to schooners. Schooners—with the sail area spread over two masts—were much easier to control and allowed for even larger vessels with more cargo capacity. Schooner building was however the domain of Anguilla. Anguillans excelled at building schooners and for very good reason. Anguilla had salt. Trading schooners from Nova Scotia would stop and load salt in Anguilla to carry back home in order to preserve fish which would then be returned to the Caribbean to trade for molasses. This is where our traditional food ‘salt fish’ came from. During the great depression in the 1920’s, Caribbean people migrated to the Dominican Republic and Cuba to find work in the Sugar cane fields. The Anguillans provided transport with schooners they learned to build from the Nova Scotia sailors they had been trading with for years. Boat building became one of the mainstays of the economy of both the Virgin Islands and Anguilla – the Virgin Islands specialising in a unique design of sloop and Anguilla in large sea worthy schooners.


People came from all over the region to purchase these boats. The similarities between our two territories does not end there. The very first settlers of Virgin Gorda came from Anguilla and had names like Hodge, Vanterpool and Romney just to name a few. The capital of Anguilla is The Valley and the connections go on. It made perfect sense that when Captain Rudolph Hodge of Cane Garden Bay decided to build a schooner, he would bring in a shipwright from Anguilla to do the work. In 1957, Anguillan shipwright McDuff Richardson relocated to Cane Garden Bay and began construction of one of the Virgin Islands’ most beautiful and well-loved vessels the Pride of Tortola or just the Pride as she was called. The Pride was 63ft in length and clearly a thing of beauty, fitted with a Perkins Diesel engine making her an auxiliary schooner. I have always considered both the Pride and the Amanda Stoutt two of my favourite local boats. I built models of both vessels and they are on display at the Maritime Museum at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. The story of these two lovely vessels takes an interesting turn when in 1963, Captain Rudolph Hodge decided to sell the Pride to Capt. Warren Stoutt and along with cash, the Amanda Stoutt was traded. Captain Stoutt kept the name Pride of Tortola for the schooner, but Capt. Hodge changed the Amanda Stoutt to the Pride of Tortola II. The story told is that the deal had been made, but no money or boats had changed hands when a big cargo became available. Capt. Hodge asked Capt. Stoutt if he could do this last job before they exchanged boats, but Capt. Stoutt insisted that the sale go through first. Capt. Stoutt then got the cargo and his profit paid for the purchase of the boat. Both vessels continued to ply their way through the region trading and carrying cargos and people to various destinations. Two years after acquiring the Pride she was lost on Omen Rock off Magens Bay in St. Thomas. She hit at 6am on November 22, 1965 with a full load of lumber. The weight of her cargo split the hull wide open and she sank in fifteen minutes. Thankfully, Capt. Stoutt and his crew made it to shore safely. Capt. Stoutt went straight to Anguilla and purchased a veteran schooner called the Baby Mack built by Anguillan shipwright Mack Conner. The Amanda Stoutt continued to sail as the Pride of Tortola II for seven more years until she too sadly sank 20 miles South of St. Thomas on July 8, 1972. We have no information at present as to why or if there was loss of life. As these schooners and large sloops faded out, they were replaced first by wooden motor vessels and then by the steel barges that we know today. At present, you can go to Port Purcell and find large steel cargo vessels lined up at the dock – if you look closely, you will see names like Tortola’s Pride and Warren’s Pride, so it would appear that the legacy lives on.

On a breezy, sun-dappled Saturday afternoon at Nanny Cay, sailors of all ages showed up

for a chance to ride along with BVI Olympic sailing hopefuls Alec Anderson and Chris Brockbank on their 49er—a high-performance racing dinghy. When it is out of the water, before the sails have been hoisted, the 49er looks more like a paper airplane than a sailboat with its flat hull and white wings on either side. On the water, its aquadynamic design is

boosted by its main, jib, and spinnaker, allowing the skiff to skim the waves like a seagull or a flying fish. After Chris and Alec showed off their world-class sailing skills by doing a few laps around the Channel (they ranked 9th overall at the Junior World Championships in July), they invited the life-jacket and rashvest wearing kids on board for a fast and wet ride in the white-capped turquoise sea. With each ride, the smiles got bigger, and the kids got wetter. At one point, Alec and Chris had seven kids aboard, but it didn’t seem to slow down the 49er as they tacked across the Channel. After the kids had their fun at pretending to be Olympians, a few more experienced seamen climbed aboard—not all at once— and got to try their hands as crew while Alec helmed. aLookingGlass CEO Colin Rathbun went for a spin which resulted in some silly sailing with the boat almost turning turtle. The day, which included a party on the beach with a barbecue and drinks provided by the team for a small contribution, was part of the Anderson/Brockbank Sailing Team’s campaign debrief—an opportunity for the young men to update their supporters on their spring and summer sailing endeavours in Europe and give their fans an opportunity to buy their swanky sailing gear. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

The most recent leg of their European tour included the aforementioned Junior World Championships in Aarhaus, Denmark, where they placed 9th overall. Coach Chris Watters said, “I was most proud of the guys when I came to the last day at Junior Worlds. They were only one point out of the top ten and looking to secure a spot in the medal races…they pulled out their best race ever, with a 4th, to jump two places to 9th overall. I still remember holding back excitement as they came alongside after the race.” After Denmark, the young men, accompanied by Coach Chris Watters, headed to Helsinki, Finland for the 2014 49er European Championship. In the Europeans, the team did not do as well as they would have liked, finishing 10th in the bronze fleet, but the experience only encouraged them to work harder once they returned home for more training until the next set of competitions. I asked their coach about the boys’ progress over the spring and summer season, and he said, “They showed the most improvements in their accelerations and getting off the start line. Down-speed boat handling is key in the 49er class, and we really focused on this a lot over the time spent in Europe. Whether on our own or with a group, it was a main focus. Video of the practices really helps.” The team’s goal is to compete in Rio at the 2016 Olympic Games. The ‘Qualification Pathway’ for their event is outlined as follows, according to the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition Qualification System on the International Sailing Federation website: “50% of the entry quota in each event shall be qualified from those best ranked NOCs [National Olympic Committees] in the corresponding events at the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

“The remaining places in each event shall be qualified from the 2015 Class World Championship and in a series of Continental Qualification Events sanctioned by ISAF, to finish by 1 June 2016 at the latest.” Alec and Chris have an advantage over sailors in other countries because they are the only team competing for these spots, and each NOC is only allowed to enter one boat per event, according to the site. That means that even though Anderson/Brockbank may rank 14th in a qualifying event, if Spain, Australia, Great Britain, and Canada all have two or more boats who have placed ahead of them, that race will still count as a qualifier. It’s a little confusing to this non-athlete, but I’m sure Alec and Chris have got it under control and know what they need to accomplish to earn a spot in Rio in 2016. In the meantime, they will continue training in the BVI and competing all over the world. Coach Watters added, “The boys made huge gains from when I saw them in November to June, and the next time I see them this year, I really hope they are nailing their heavy air corners…”

e’ve all heard people say, “I need a vacation from my vacation,” and what an oxymoron that might seem. But, we all know the truth – relaxing can actually be exhausting. First, the anticipation of travelling to the Islands gets our heart rate going; then comes sailing and splashing around the British Virgin Islands to take in every water activity on offer; eating all the incredible cuisine available; swimming, snorkelling, sunbathing, dancing, and karaoke into the wee hours of the night – with all this, our senses are filled with vibrant colours and swaying beats – it’s a joy, a pleasure and a great day and night is had by all. Then we sleep and our bright, beautiful, beloved sun greets us the next morning. Alas! We must do it all again. This glorious and energetic ride can be helped with a little bit of mum-like advice: “eat your breakfast.” Power up your fun-filled vacation day with this classic, savoury, fulfilling breakfast treat – loaded with whole grains, protein, freshness, and spice to fuel your most memorable Caribbean adventure.

Ingredients (1) 2 TBSP olive oil 1 red bell pepper, diced small 1 medium onion, diced small 4 cloves of garlic, minced 3 chorizo sausages, removed from casing

Then you need 2 eggs cooked to your preference. For Ingredients (1): In a deep saucepan, sautée the red bell pepper, onions, garlic, and chorizo in olive oil. Cook until onions are just becoming translucent and sausage is browning. Deglaze with white wine and cook for 1 minute. Add in coconut milk and chicken stock and bring to a boil. Add in quinoa and reduce to a simmer. Cover and cook for 20 minutes, or until quinoa has absorbed all the liquids, stirring every minute. Toss in spring onions. For Ingredients (2): In a small bowl, mix tomatoes, onion, jalapeño, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Serve eggs, quinoa, and salsa together in a wide bowl. Garnish with cilantro.

Two years ago, Virgin Islands Property and Yacht magazine

interviewed famous local artist Joseph Hodge, unveiling his artistic finesse and wealth of experience to our readers. It is of little surprise that his bloodline has conceived more talented individuals in cousin Amber Robles-Gordon, a mixed media sculptor and installation artist, who has recently discovered several of her relatives, including Joseph Hodge via our technological accessibility to the globe. Born in Puerto Rico, raised in Arlington, Virginia and having lived in Washington DC for the last 17 years, the majority of her family reside in St Thomas, Tortola, St John, and Antigua; a few months ago, she contacted VIPY, enquiring about her cousin Joseph and has since established a relationship with her family here in the BVI. With the apple not falling far from the tree, the young artist revealed that she has led a successful career to date as an artist. Formally educated with a Masters of Fine Arts in painting from Howard University, Washington, she has won numerous awards and grants during her time studying, including a Special Projects Grant from the DC Commission in the Arts and Humanities. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

Amber explained, “My artwork is a visual representation of my hybridism: a fusion of my gender, ethnicity, cultural and social experiences.” With the noble intention of positively affecting viewers and recipients with her artistic energy, she translates the very concept of colour as a representation of both masculine and feminine vitality, representing various aspects of nature, and acting as a healing force in the creative process. Despite spending less time in the Virgin Islands than she would have liked, Amber has drawn on both the imagery of the Caribbean and what she suspects is an innate tropical inspiration in her creativity. “Although, I have only visited the islands at age 12 and twice as an adult, the Caribbean aesthetic and cultural influence is represented throughout my artwork,” said the accomplished artist. “The British and US Virgin Islands are a part of my bloodlines.” Delving into the foundations of her career, Amber said “I desire my artwork to embody my spiritual connection to colour and project a sense of energy to positively affect others. I merge coloured feminine objects and masculine forms in order to visually fuse the various materials and energies.” In taking this unconventional edge, Amber has created works that provoke the inquisitive mind and arguably emerge as mysterious. Simultaneously, Amber has a strong motivating factor supporting the pieces she produces. “I use found objects to symbolically articulate the need to recycle energy and [show the] power inherent to discarded materials,” said the pioneering artist. “Through my work, I seek to examine the parallels between how humanity perceives its greatest resources, [and] how we treat our possessions and environment.” Consistently reviewed in the Washington Post, Amber’s museum and university exhibitions include a series of locations: Montgomery College, Takoma Park, University of Maryland, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C, University of California, Washington Centre, The Rotunda Gallery at American University, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa and more. In December 2012, Amber was selected to participate in Art Africa Miami. In 2013, she exhibited at Prizm Art Fair, and subsequently has been invited back to create an installation for the 2014 incarnation of the event. Most recently, the artist has been commissioned to form and co-lead a public art workshop, create a temporary public art installation, and be a panel participant as part of the James A. Porter Colloquium at Howard University in April 2014. Additionally, she has been appointed to create an installation for the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture in September 2014. With a bright future, Amber anticipates optimism in her ambition to visit the Virgin Islands for an extended duration with the goal of fulfilling a new and inspiring project: “In the near future my goal is to secure funding to be able to visit both the British and the US Virgin Islands for a longer period of time and be able to create a body of work that further explores my connections to Caribbean aesthetic and culture.” The artist will be in Miami in December for the Art Basel, then travelling on to St. Thomas for the remainder of the month. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

RESURRECTING

ARK

THE

The Association of Reef Keepers (ARK) was first formed in 1991 by a group of citizens concerned about the state of the BVI’s marine resources. Over the following years, ARK made its mark both locally and internationally. Some of the early accomplishments were the various educational materials printed such as those to remind visiting yachts about anchoring in sand instead of dropping anchors on fragile coral reefs. Later on, ARK started implementing a newly developed global protocol for reef monitoring – Reef Check. One of the last important successes of ARK was its role in the execution of erosion control measures during the development of the runway extension at the airport; however, by around 2005, ARK was slowly becoming less and less prominent within the Territory. By 2012, the founding members were ready to close the account and walk away from what once had the potential to become one of the most effective non-profit organisations in the Territory. Without leadership and any future plans, ARK’s mission towards the preservation and sustainability of the BVI’s marine environment would have forever been lost. Fortunately, the interest and dedication of Dr Shannon Gore to assume the challenge to resurrect the organisation as the new managing director meant a ‘game-changer.’ By mid-2014, an innovative stratagem had been devised and a new board of directors had taken over from the founding members. Although ARK is still in its early stages, clear goals have been constructed and four programmes are under development that focus on marine biodiversity, habitat monitoring and restoration, island erosion, and a sustainable cruising and marine industry.

In July 2014, the first project under ARK was launched and is entitled the ‘Cane Garden Bay Ridge 2 Reef Project’ (CGB R2R). This ‘ridge to reef’ concept is a widely used holistic approach that focuses not only on hillside environments, but also the coastal and marine ecosystems within an area (watershed) from the top of hills down to the coral reefs fronting the land. It encompasses the multi-dimensional environmental, socio-cultural and economic characteristics of communities existing within a geographically shared area, such as the Cane Garden Bay community. For years, there have been numerous issues that have arisen within the community and ARK—together with Green VI—will be giving ‘Let’s talk…’ presentations for the community (or anyone interested) to inform people about up-to-date science, technological advances, and various case studies around the world where communities have resolved their own issues. This is only the first step in the R2R Project, aimed to build local capacity and bring the community together as one voice. The ‘Let’s talk…’ series will be held every third Thursday of the month at various local businesses – anyone interested in these presentations can find more information on the ‘CGB Ridge 2 Reef’ Facebook page. At dawn, the shorelines of the British Virgin Islands are peppered with sleepy boats rocking awake, birds

angling for their morning catch, and the sun, peaking through the mountains as people wake to its fine glow. Often weaving through this majestic spectacle is a pack of aquatic warriors, balancing on stand up paddle boards (SUP), training with fierce determination and power. They move quietly, listening to the instruction called to them by their leaders. Balancing on their SUP boards, long paddles in hand, the group of fitness enthusiasts glide along the water with what seems like utmost ease. In reality, these SUP warriors are utilising a plethora of muscle groups in their body to constantly adjust and stay balanced. SUP boarding had its roots planted throughout world history. What is Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP)? Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) is the ability to balance one’s body on an oblong board, over water, with the help of a long arm paddle. The paddle and the board are specifically chosen and/or adjusted for the boarder’s height and weight. In a fitness class, a group of SUP boarders joins one or two instructors on the water, rowing laps, and completing specifically designed exercises while balancing on the board. Fitness class are intended to focus on the core of the body. “Think of doing an hour straight of sit ups!” Breeze PaddleSurf Fitness Instructor Abby Young jokes. These fitness classes can burn an average of 1200 calories an hour. Young and Breeze Paddle Surf owner, Lee Donovan, also instruct SUP Yoga classes. SUP Yoga combines balance of the body, on the board, with the skill of mindfulness. Mindfulness defined here is a person’s ability to focus on emotions and mental well-being. SUP yoga class includes 30 minutes of SUP paddling and an hour of yoga on the board.

There are a few islands in the BVI that are marked by their conspicuous, atmospheric dynamic. They arouse pleasant, powerful emotions that challenge any wordsmith to define. The island of which I speak in this instance is Cooper Island, harbouring the internationally popular Cooper Island Beach Club. Invited by my friend and work colleague Scott Taylor, his wife Dawn, and children Cooper and Sawyer, we ventured from Port Purcell via the Cooper Island ferry service toward this harmonious isle during the BVI’s August three-day holiday. Scott relayed that they planned on staying the night and I responded with inquisitiveness about residing there. Having enjoyed the resort once before, in desperate necessity of a vacation, and with the summer discounted rates, I decided to take up a room for myself. Now, this wasn’t a planned expenditure, but life is for living, and what better place to enjoy it than the Caribbean. I made my excuses for this impulse decision; the main one being that Cooper Island was a perfect retreat. As much as I’ve enjoyed August Festival, for an individual who lives in the hills of Road Town and has a monthly deadline to accommodate, the vibrant music of each night translated as an alarm clock with a 10-min snooze and no off-function. In addition, I was obliged to escape the mosquitoes that had become

more vicious – these mozzies revealed no phobia at the taste of a little OFF DEEP WOODS when feasting on you, leaving the only other option; constant vigilance with an electrified racket and receipt of squeaky buzzing in the ear. Arriving at Cooper Island, there is an immediate feeling of lightness; almost as if you’ve been on the Stepmaster 2000 for a month – you literally lose weight. There is also a brightness and openness to the surrounding area that elevates the spirit. The welcoming vibe is profound and with minimal persuasion, you are compelled to relax. Lunch and dinner were delicious, meeting expectations – I was very pleased with my choice of the pork, but the experience that attracted much of my enthusiasm was in one of the latest additions to the resort – the Rum Bar. Earlier this year, I wrote an article about Cooper Island’s newest amenities and when reviewing the Rum Bar, I had a crystal clear prophecy of how I would best use my time there; not just an image of consuming the generous measures of alcoholic beverages, but more about how relaxed it would be to sit in the environs with their comfortable cushions and chairs. Despite the fact that Cooper Island does not bear any resemblance to my home here in the BVI or in London, that peaceful, accommodating ambiance of familiarity, was present in abundance. With Scott retiring to his room early with his family, I was left up to my own devices.

After imbibing with some of the off-duty staff members who were thoroughly enjoyable company, I too withdrew to my room – writing this at this very point, I can still feel the comfort of the bed and the surrounding decoration that expresses ‘smart eco-resort.’ The next morning, the provision of breakfast in the pavilion, followed by kayaks and paddleboards on the beach as all-inclusive of the resort, was a comfortable bonus. In the Caribbean, you can drift out a short distance from shore and begin to see the tropical marine life below – an awe – inspiring vision. Staying on Cooper Island was definitely an action of spontaneity that exceeded satisfaction. I know Scott and Dawn were especially pleased at how the staff looked after their kids, supporting this overwhelming aura of warm hospitality. I suppose that is the main benefit of being a BVI resident and tourist in your own town; you get to take advantage of activities that visitors go to great lengths to experience.
