The 62ft Sunreef Catamaran is run by Captain Niall Reid, and his fiancée, 1st mate and Chef, Kirsty Fletcher. A tradition adopted from boats in her mother’s hometown—a small fishing village in Scotland—Miss Kirsty got her name from the daughter of the owners, Kirsty’s parents. Onboard Lolalita, we absolutely love having kids out with us. Everything is so magical, new and exciting, and that energy carries through to all guests and crew – it’s contagious, and wonderfully so. At the same time, there are many different aspects we consider when we have kids onboard, from safety to itinerary to—you guessed it—food. We find that most young ones prefer a ‘simpler’ menu than the adults, and that’s perfectly fine. Unspoken permission allows me to create dishes with funny faces and googly eyeballs – I get to be silly, too. On occasion, a child or young adult comes out with us that has a sophisticated and adventurous palate for their age, and that inspires further enthusiasm. Not only is the ocean magical, the sailing thrilling, and the islands exotic – now the food is sensational, too. The energy is beyond electric and I have oodles of fun in the galley. One young girl whose family sailed with us on Lolalita loved all kinds of sushi, but her brother and sister were a bit more sceptical. They were willing to try something “kind of like sushi” in their adorable words, and so I created…

Ingredients 2 filets of tuna, raw, chilled 1 avocado 2 sprigs green onion

1oz fresh ginger, peeled, shredded Handful of fresh basil, finely chopped 1tsp olive oil Juice from half a lime Salt and pepper Black sesame seeds Sriracha sauce Thin crackers or tortilla chips

In a large mixing bowl, mix together the raw tuna diced (about ¼-inch cubes); diced avocado; green onion split long-ways and diced; shredded ginger; chopped basil; olive oil; lime juice; and salt and pepper to taste. I recommend serving immediately, but it can last in the fridge up to an hour. Either serve in a bowl with tortilla chips, or spoon the tartare onto thin crackers. Garnish with Sriracha sauce (if you like spice) and black sesame seeds. Recipe serves 8

july twenty sixth will mark eighty nine years since the tragic loss of the schooner Fancy Me in a hurricane off La Romano in the Dominican Republic. Her sinking and resulting loss of life was the worst disaster to ever befall our local population. The mention of her name today can still bring impassioned reactions from those who lost relatives on that faithful night so long ago. There were 80 passengers and crew on board and over 59 of them were lost in the sinking, almost all of them local BVIslanders. There is an excellent book that was written about this event called Such are the Hours to Find Peace by Dr. Janet Smith a relative of the Fancy Me’s Captain and a colleague of mine at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. I have read her book several times and also other accounts and articles on the tragedy and have come to form some of my own thoughts on what happened that night – I would like to share them with you in this article. I grew up on the New Jersey coast and lived many years in North Carolina before moving to the Virgin Islands; I am no stranger to Hurricanes. My first was ‘Donna’ in 1960 and my last big one was ‘Tomas’ in 2010. As I sat in a hotel room in St. Lucia riding out ‘Tomas,’ I began to make a list of all the Hurricanes I had been through in my life and I quit at 14.


Most storms occur right around September 3, but it is the early and late ones that can cause the most damage. ‘Thomas’ was at the end of October and so was the storm that wrecked the British Mail Steamer Rhone in 1867 off Peter Island. I was once in a terrific hurricane in North Carolina named ‘Bertha’ which occurred in July and it was an early unexpected storm in July which wrecked the Fancy Me. The Fancy Me was a beautiful schooner built in St. Thomas by master shipwright Daniel Smith and owned by brothers James and Alexander Smith of Carrot Bay. She carried cargo and passengers back and forth between the Dominican Republic and Tortola and the islands in-between. During the 1920’s, many local BVIslanders along with other down islanders found work in the Dominican Republic, helping to harvest sugarcane; they usually worked abroad for six months at a time before returning home. In this case it was late July and the Fancy Me was full of sugarcane and passengers anxious to return home for August Festival celebrations. The hold was full to over capacity with cargo as she left the port of Macoris on July 25, 1926. The Harbour Master had warned that the glass was dropping, referring to the barometer, and recommended postponing the voyage. Many other vessels decided to wait it out. but Captain Smith opted to leave little knowing what lay ahead. And why not – it was July, too early for a big gale as they were then called; the term hurricane wasn’t used until much later. There was no weather service or radar images to warn mariners of an oncoming storm – one had to rely on local knowledge and years of experience and Captain Smith had plenty of both. As they left the Dominican Republic and headed towards Puerto Rican waters, the wind began to rise. By early afternoon it was blowing hard and they decided to turn back. Around 3pm, they anchored in a shallow but sheltered bay in the island of La Soana just off the West coast of La Romana. There were two vessels already anchored there and Captain Smith secured his sails and settled in. When the Fancy Me’s anchor was set, they had to use their second anchor as the primary, or heaviest anchor was not available being buried in the hold beneath bags of sugarcane. The wind continued to rise until a full gale was blowing and at about 8 o’clock in the evening the anchor chain parted (broke) and the Fancy Me was sent adrift away from La Soana, blown towards the East and out to sea away from land. Captain Smith and his crew did not panic, knowing just what to do. They took empty barrels tied to lines and tossed them off the stern of the boat. They then filled with water and created what is called a ‘Sea Anchor,’ the weight of which forces the bow into the wind – as long as they are clear of land they are relatively safe.

Although a terrifying experience for everyone, the situation was under control and it was just a matter of keeping her head to wind till the storm passed. It was around 2am in the morning of July 26 when things began to fall apart. First, the wind died down to an eerie calm and many thought the storm was over. Captain Smith and the experienced sailors knew better and prepared for the worst. They were in the ‘Eye’ of the storm and around 3am the wind began to blow from the opposite direction and harder than before. One can only guess the category this hurricane would have been labelled today, but suffice to say it was a bad one. The Fancy Me’s bow was turned around and she was sent West with the gale heading back exactly where she had come from towards land. Just before first light, she struck ‘White Horse Rock’ on La Soana and began to break up on the reef. Being overloaded with cargo and passengers, this did not take long. People were forced into the raging sea grasping for anything that would float in a desperate attempt to save themselves. Captain Smith stayed on board and went down with his ship following one of the oldest traditions of the sea. Sadly, daybreak revealed that 59 out of the 80 souls on board had perished. Word reached Tortola the next day and spread like wild fire. Worry over who had survived gave over to catastrophic grief over the next weeks as the severity of the tragedy unfolded. It is said that there wasn’t a dry eye anywhere in our Virgin Islands as everyone had lost one or more relatives. Families were shattered and the effects were felt over generations. Over the years, much blame has been placed on the Captain and there were stories of the crew abandoning their posts and so on, but I believe they did all that they could. Captain Smith displayed cool confidence and handled his vessel as you would expect an expert mariner to do. Perhaps if the larger anchor had been available, the boat would have held her ground. Still, the anchor held – it was the chain that parted. Of course if they stayed in port to begin with it would have never happened. In the end, I believe it was the ill fate of being in the exact centre of the hurricane. A hurricane rotates like a wagon wheel with the winds at the top moving counter clockwise and those at the bottom in the opposite direction. If only that storm had passed a little North of the Fancy Me, perhaps she would have survived. She could have held her position being blown away from land until it passed. There has been talk over the years of creating a memorial to this greatest of all tragedies and of celebrating July 26 as an annual day of remembrance for all those who have been lost at sea. I would fully support this effort and feel it is long over do.

Before I moved

to the British Virgin Islands only a few short months ago, I had vacationed here with my mother. We were astonished that such a place existed and instantly fell in love with both the welcoming Caribbean hospitality and the breathtaking natural surroundings. I’d spent most of my life in Canada, but always been a ‘tropical baby’ at heart, and so I naturally gravitated to the aesthetically pleasing beaches, and especially the vibrant social atmosphere and beauty I discovered in Cane Garden Bay. Since moving here, I noticed a new activity down in Cane: a colourful picnic table, equipped with a parasol and barbecue, floating on the water around the bay. Curious to learn more about this attraction, I inquired with Kevin Wenk, the founder of the ElectraCat Adaptive Catamaran Systems, commonly known as Anger Management Picnic Tables—its original name—down in Cane. Kevin was delighted by my interest in the tables and was happy to give me a ride, as he regularly welcomes visitors and members of the community to come out and enjoy a cruise. Currently, Kevin works in the telecommunications field, and ElectraCat is his hobby and therapeutic experience he enjoys sharing with others. The idea for ElectraCat came to Kevin from a photo on the internet entitled “Redneck Pontoon Picnic Table”, with two men floating on a wooden table which they’d made by attaching pontoons and a trolling motor. He decided to perfect and master this idea which now includes features such as built in coolers, a small gas grill, LED lights, and even outlets to charge electronic devices. Using recycled pontoons and constructing a picnic table to fit, the first ElectraCat only took Kevin and his friends Tom Echle, Jason Geyser, and Dana Miller a day to build. When they were confident and happy with the design, Kevin invited a few friends to join for the first test run in a swimming pool to see if the invention would float on water. When the table was able to successfully stay afloat with the weight of Kevin and five of his friends, the group was elated and they celebrated by cracking a can of Schaffer beer on the side of the table—Schaffer being the ‘champagne’ of those who love the casual lifestyle which is renowned down on the beach at Cane Garden Bay. For a year, Kevin has been cruising the bay of Cane on his picnic table. Friends who ride are invited to bring their own food and beverages if they wish to relish the full experience of a picnic on the water. On the grill, his favourite grub to cook are meat and veggie skewers, shrimp, potatoes, and especially bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Sunset rides while enjoying the feast are especially popular, although Kevin loves nighttime cruises the most. With the newest addition of his ongoing project, LED lights, the experience is enhanced during a night cruise, where the exotic sea life of Cane including sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, manta rays, tarpon, octopus, moray eel, and puffer fish can be spotted as they are naturally attracted to the glowing illumination of underwater and above-water lights emitted from the boat. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

Recently in 2014, Kevin was approached by a friend-of-a-friend on Facebook who had seen photos of the tables online. The friend works for a specialty fabrication company in Orlando and came down to the BVI to check out what was then Anger Management Picnic Tables. He was eager to become Kevin’s business partner on which is soon to be the manufacturing and distribution of a line of quality ElectraCat tables. This exciting new venture, set to launch later this year, is a huge accomplishment for Kevin who was made the co-owner of ElectraCat and distributor for the tables in the Caribbean and South America. Kevin’s personal ElectraCat tables will soon include a new ecofriendly design where the 12 volt battery will be charged by solar panels donated by the local alternative energy company, A -Tec. This model will be included in the production of all new tables manufactured by ElectraCat Adaptive Catamaran Systems. “Tourists who have shared this experience have told me that they have spent a week travelling the islands, and their ride on the ElectraCat has been the favourite part of their holiday,” said Kevin with great enthusiasm.

I ascended Joe’s Hill in my car and the temperature must’ve dropped ten degrees—a welcome relief on a sweaty, sticky, summer afternoon on Tortola. When I pulled into Countryside Adventures at Diamond Estate Farm, across from the Montessori School, there was actually a breeze—a mystical occurrence during the scorching dry spell we’d been having. I walked up the path to the farm, confronted by a sky that seemed cartoon blue, and I wondered if I had stumbled through a door to a magical kingdom—a kingdom of ponies, cats, tortoises, parrots, donkeys, macaws, rabbits, ducks, and occasionally visiting owls. I was tempted to talk to them to see if they’d reply. Instead of being greeted by talking animals, I was welcomed by Alison Knights Bramble, the head of Countryside Adventures—farm and country

centre. I have known Alison since I first arrived on island seven years ago, but my interactions with her in the past had been on the water through her former role as a sailing instructor and principal of the BVI Watersports Centre. As she told me about her new hillside venture, she compared her interactions with students on the land and sea. One of the biggest differences is her lack of a safety boat, she said, because in her RIB, she could whiz after students to help them with any problems on the water. But at the farm, if she has experienced adult riders out on one of the many trails overlooking the seaside, “it’s easier to be on foot to control that situation.” Alison added, “It’s just a sailing school, out of water,” but with one big difference—horses have brains, sometimes stubborn ones. Each boat


may have its own quirks and traits, but horses are living creatures with personalities and intelligence. In addition, “The satisfaction angle is slightly different,” Alison said. “I’m equally as pleased with the ponies and the horses as I am with the adults and the kids. I went through a time last month wondering if it was the kids getting better or the horses getting better, and I think it’s both.” She mentioned that there is a greater level of trust involved when working with living animals instead of boats. “I know what a boat will do in a certain wind direction—that’s mechanics—but you can never exactly predict what a horse is going to do.” I learned this soon enough as some young riders arrived for their afternoon lessons. After watching the kids saddle up the horses, which was not dissimilar from watching them rig their Oppis and Picos at the Watersports Centre, the students mounted their ponies and tried their best to direct the steeds around the ring, according to Alison’s instructions.

“Walk on,” one student said to his horse that seemed quite happy to be stationary. From across the ring, Alison hollered, “Keep your legs on her,” above the noise of the rustling breeze, the fussing ducks, the chattering students, the screeching macaw, and the clomping hooves. “She has to want to go with you,” she said to one student whose pony, Chippie, short for Chocolate Chip because of her black spots, kept returning to the gate. By the end of the session, one rider had successfully trotted his pony around the ring and another had directed his horse across the ring from point to point. After the first lesson, new riders approached for their turn, and some members of the first group headed over to visit the mini petting zoo where the tortoises, rabbits, and ducks were sequestered. I followed them down the path and headed back to my car, but not before hearing the macaw shout, “Walk on!” to the new set of students. Watercolour Project in Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan American Games The Textile Museum of Canada created a cultural project this year to be shared at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan American Games entitled ‘Watercolour.’ It will showcase artwork from 41 Pan American countries who participate in the games. Paintings from mid-level artists will animate the sails of boats, participating in the sailing races during the event. Through the internet, the museum found Debi’s art-work and invited her to contribute one of her paintings to represent the British Virgin Islands. “My chosen piece—Neon Energy—reflects the vitality created by neon colours and to me, it generates the vigour I believe the BVI will represent in the games this fall,” said Debi. Caribbean Critter Painting Series Debi describes herself as whimsical, and so her Caribbean Critter paintings reflect that; this is an ongoing series of over a dozen canvases featuring local animals. The unique aspect of these paintings is that Debi places the island animals in juxtaposition with activity or relations which seem out of the ordinary, yet somehow seem logical in the BVI. For example, a monkey riding a bike with his feet while eating a banana, and a dog riding the waves on a surfboard. “These paintings are designed to evoke emotions of joy and happiness and are targeted for ‘the young and the young at heart,’” said Debi, as the Critter Series have been installed in children’s bedrooms, upscale villas, and private yachts. Installation of Paintings at Peter Island Resort & Spa One of Debi’s collections to date is an installation of paintings in the rooms at the resort on Peter Island. Her working relationship with Peter Island began in 2004 when Debi proposed her expertise as an interior designer on the renovations to the spa. In 2006-2007, she offered her design services on a ‘soft goods’ renovation of the ocean-view and beachfront rooms, updating the colour palettes and modernising the furnishings. Later, she was fortunate enough to contribute 200+ paintings which featured bright abstract reflections of sea life and our surroundings. Teaching Art at Killi Killi In September 2014, Debi became involved with Killi Killi Arts Company, a growing group and resource within the community which offers classes for adults and children in artistic disciplines. Debi is the teacher of two visual art classes for younger children ages 5-9, and older youth ages 10-15 which focus on the exploration of art through varying materials, methods, colour and texture. In closing, Debi admitted “I have found the little ones love anything messy and hands on…we have such fun!” She concluded that sharing her love of abstract and expressionist artwork is by far the most rewarding part of her career.

RMS Rhone is one of the British Virgin Islands’ most popular dive sites, as divers are both fascinated by the underwater sea creatures which inhabit the wreck, and intrigued by the story of what once was a UK Royal Mail Ship built in Cornwall, England in 1865. During a hurricane on October 29, 1867, the Rhone crashed into some rocks off the coast of Salt Island. Tragically, the lives of 123 souls were lost, and only 23 passengers were left to bury the deceased at a nearby ceremony on the island. Rhone was an innovative ship and the first built to withstand the transatlantic journey to Brazil. The ship had weathered several major storms prior to the tragedy which ended her journeys, one of which in 1866 even destroyed two of her cutters and most of the deck furniture. RMS Rhone is now a National Park of the British Virgin Islands, inhabited by exotic sea life and possibly remnants of artefacts and treasures which have yet to be discovered by those who dive 85 feet below sea level to explore.
