THE MONTH OF APRIL BRINGS VIPY to an alfresco episode in our annual line up, and there’s no better place than the tropical climate of the Virgin Islands to enjoy the outdoors. We begin by climbing to the peak of the private Belmont estate in Tortola to visit the stunning, traditional St Bernard’s Hill House – a luxurious, hilltop property with an architectural design, that exhibits mastery over the pleasant breezes and outstanding views of the island. Take a look; this is a home of the finest calibre. The Things We Love this issue parallels our alfresco theme with outdoor pieces for the interior of your home, adding an ‘earthy’ statement to your humble abode. We also ask the question – what grows best in your garden? The Virgin Islands are known for having a plethora of plant life and excellent weather conditions for greenery, making gardening and landscaping a rewarding hobby and in the feature following, Habitat presents a home design idea matching spring’s vibrant mood. Moving forward to our SEA section, we showcase three marinas that we love to visit when cruising the islands – YCCS, Nanny Cay, and Yacht Haven Grande; all very different and exceptional from the last. BVI Maritime History Tales seeks out your support for maintenance of Virgin Islands’ heritage; sloops are an intricate part of our culture here and the ambition is to see existing sloops repaired, and enhancement of the Virgin Islands Maritime Museum. Delish indulges in great cuisine; this time the menu presents Eggs Benedict with Sweet Potato Salmon Cake. Extremely tasty. And our Style & Beauty editor invigorates your fashion choices with some pristine selections while Creative Expressions reveals the watercolour expertise of Jinx Morgan; a well-known and skilled artist of our region. Wishing you enjoyment of the LAND, SEA, and LIFE in the Virgin Islands.

VERY, VERY OCCASIONALLY we are fortunate enough to be asked to list for sale a truly spectacular home that exceeds all expectations. Coldwell Banker is delighted to present the exceptional St Bernard’s Hill House high on the hilltop at Tortola’s West End. Designed by architect Jon Osman, the estate encompasses 8.22 acres of hilltop with a lookout location offering views south across St John, west to St Thomas, and north over Jost van Dyke. You will not find a better view or situation anywhere in the BVI. The estate is meticulously maintained and remains in pristine condition. With gated road access from the private Belmont Estate, the elegantlyfurnished colonial style main house and four additional bedroom pavilions are set within manicured gardens of palms and bougainvillea. All accommodations are well situated on the estate to offer maximum privacy. A self-contained manager’s residence is located in a private area at a short distance from the main house. The main house has been designed to take advantage of the abundant breezes and outstanding views with extensive covered dining and living terraces on three sides. The great room has high arched doors that can be left open to create the ultimate indoor/outdoor living experience. A formal indoor dining room with seating for 10, leads to a state-of-the art kitchen complete with two pantries, marble countertops, a central island, and stainless steel appliances. An outdoor dining area can be reached from the kitchen. The spacious master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, additional bedroom, and guest halfbathroom complete the main house. The main living areas are equipped with a Sonos sound system. Situated at either side of the

main house and reached by outside entrances, are the bedroom cottages. Each guest cottage is decorated and furnished in a different but equally tasteful style and all have wraparound, hardwood verandas with comfortable seating areas. Two of the guest cottages contain one bedroom each and a further two bedrooms are housed in a duplex cottage, separated by an interconnecting door but still with their own private verandas. Large en-suite bathrooms, high cathedral ceilings, air-conditioning, televisions, kitchenettes, and walk-in closets are included in each guest bedroom. The infinity-edge pool can be reached down a stone staircase from the main house. Thoughtfully designed stools have been positioned in the water at the infinity edge to ensure your comfort whilst taking in the stunning scenery and perhaps a cocktail or two. The surrounding pool terrace

has plenty of comfortable loungers, umbrellas to provide shade, a wet-bar and conveniently situated bathroom. The gardens have been carefully landscaped to create several areas of lawn separated by stone walkways and vivid shades of bougainvillea and hibiscus. A half-hidden lawn is home to a hammock shaded by a canopy of trees

and makes a cool spot to enjoy an afternoon snooze. A wooden viewing deck has been built onto the hillside facing Frenchman’s Cay. Filled with comfortable lounging furniture and shaded by royal palms, the bird’s eye views afforded over Soper’s Hole and St John cannot be matched anywhere else on the island. residence, in recent years this six-bedroom property has been successfully operating as an exclusive, fully-staffed vacation retreat for the fortunate few. The present owners and family have enjoyed St Bernard’s Hill House for their own personal vacations and rented it out for just a few weeks per year, never overfilling the house or taxing the infrastructure with large groups. With over eight acres of land, St Bernard’s Hill has more than ample opportunity for further development with potential for adding a helipad or further structures. The estate is ideally situated for ease of access to Soper’s Hole Marina for mooring your boat and close to the West End Ferry Dock port of entry into the BVI, making international arrivals from St Thomas by private launch a breeze. St Bernard’s Hill House will exceed your expectations in every way. ■

WHAT GROWS BEST IN YOUR GARDEN? Some helpful hints on the best native trees and plants to get your garden flourishing WO R DS BY SA R A S H E R M A N

26 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

bvipropertyyacht.com

LAND / GARDENS & LANDSCAPING

THE PRISTINE NATURAL BEAUTY of the Virgin Islands is fantastically unique and provides a stunning backdrop to island living. The Caribbean’s native plants and flowers add colour, provide shade, and enhance an island home with organic charm. One of the best parts about living on an island is the unbelievable vista, and any landscaping should add to the scene without obstructing water views or creating visual distractions. Ms. Natasha Harrigan of the J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens in Road Town, Tortola offered invaluable information on the best plants native to the Virgin Islands to grow indoors and out. With the fluid nature of indoor-outdoor living, these native plants offer local flavour to complement the island’s natural surroundings.

OUTDOORS

Landscaping is the ‘welcome mat’ of a home. It is the first thing people see as they arrive and the last thing they see as they leave. These outdoor plants thrive in the tropical climate and add shade, colour, and beauty to an outdoor space. TREES Palm trees are recognised

the world over as a symbol of the tropics, and the many varieties each offer their unique shape and shade capabilities. Some plants native to the BVI that provide excellent shade include the Jacquinia, the Orange Manjack tree, Wild Mauby, and the Mahogany tree. These trees tolerate the Caribbean sun well and provide a

variety of contrasting shapes. If you’re looking to add some colour to your landscaping, ornamental trees provide a stunning array of hues in addition to offering desirable shade. The flowering yellow poui, black pearl, ylang ylang, and vivid flamboyant tree each offer a colourful canopy. The beautiful Frangipani are also known to be particularly tolerant to pests and wild animals. GROUND PLANTS Traditional yard grasses don’t grow particularly well in the islands, so other ground plants can provide coverage and diversity to a landscape. Many cacti are native to the BVI and require little water to thrive. Aloe vera and bromeliads provide beautiful and low-maintenance ground coverage. Crotons, red and green dracaena, schefflera, and bougainvillea plants are very tolerant of the sun, can withstand a longer period without watering, and have fewer nutrient needs, making them ideal for outdoor landscapes. “If your property comes into contact with much seablast, stay away from the softer and more delicate plants like annuals, perennials and some variegated species of plants as they may not be able to tolerate the high salt content,” said Harrigan. FRUIT Tropical fruit trees and vines

offer a different way to landscape a yard. Not all these plants are native to the BVI, but they all thrive in the climate and not only provide contrast to a landscaped property but give a bonus: delicious fruit! Papaya, banana, guava, mango, sugar apple, breadfruit, guinep, golden apple, carambola (star fruit), or passion fruit plants add edible variety to a landscape.

A P R I L 2 0 1 7 | 27

LAND / GARDENS & LANDSCAPING

FLOWERS Flowering plants

are eye-catching and often the showpieces of a home’s landscaping plan. Bougainvillea and blooming agave require less water, but provide fantastic flowers. Morning glory and hibiscus also offer beautiful flowers to welcome anyone into a home. Heliconias, ginger lilies, numerous ferns, and the beautiful bird of paradise plants don’t require many nutrients, but need lots of shade and water. Once planted in the right spot, these beautiful plants thrive and produce stunning flowers.

INDOORS

Plants provide an organic element indoors, as well as helping keep the air clean and providing a relaxed sense of calm inside a home or office. Potted plants like anthuriums and coleus offer beautiful texture to a room, while the flowering prunella and the ever-popular orchid radiate stunning colour into the home. The unique shape of sansevieria and lucky bamboo add diversity to your indoor landscape while requiring less maintenance.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Caribbean living has its own unique challenges that go along with creating a beautiful space. Consider how day to day life with these plants will affect your choices. If your property has a pool, remember when placing plants around it what kind of leaves you will have to scoop out of the water. Any pets will also potentially be interacting with the landscaping around your home, so make sure any poisonous or hazardous plants aren’t anywhere the pets could be harmed. In addition to domestic pets, wild animals and pests are also a part of

island living. “Most plants are pruned to pests, especially non-native plants that are more at risk. Some pests are even known to only affect certain families of plants. The truth is, once your plant is stressed—lacking water or nutrients—they will be more prone to pests,” said Harrigan. Take into account the placement of your plants based on the orientation of your home. The Caribbean sun can be rather harsh, so make sure the plants you choose can withstand the amount of sun or shade they receive based on their placement in

ABOVE The Virgin Islands’ abundance of plant variety

your landscaping plan. In addition to the sun, making sure your plants receive adequate water will help you determine their placement. Even though the tropics get a lot of rain, there is always the potential for dry spells. You don’t want to deal with plants that require lots of precious cistern water. Special thanks to Natasha Harrigan and the J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens. The Botanic Gardens, located in Road Town, Tortola, are open to the public and provide a delightful afternoon outing to visitors and residents alike. The nursery sells plants mainly native to the BVI and gives away free trees to the public on Arbour Day (November 27). ■

SEA / MARINAS WE LOVE

ONE OF THE GREATEST, most pleasurable pastimes in the Virgin Islands is sailing (or cruising). Even better, is island-hopping; venturing to new territory in the region with all the novelties it has to offer. In between the adventure, we love it when we come across a marina that has everything a sailor could need, and some extra. Three marinas that are a welcome blessing on our voyage around the Virgin Islands are Yacht Club Costa

The luxurious YCCS marina in the heart of the billionaire yacht playground

bvipropertyyacht.com

Smeralda situated in the North Sound of Virgin Gora, Nanny Cay located in Tortola, and Yacht Haven Grande in St Thomas. Each possesses its own unique flair that breathes a hospitable respite into any aqua excursion, and we relish their conspicuous differences.

YCCS (BVI – Virgin Gorda) Our first stop is YCCS Marina. Positioned in the billionaire yacht playground of the North Sound, this is a luxurious haven for those who seek affluence and tranquillity. Founded in 2012, YCCS finds its allure in boasting the best quality

food, an unrivalled level of safety for its guests, and the all-encompassing natural beauty of the North Sound. Allowing a natural draft of 40 feet and yachts up to 300 feet, the amenities speak for themselves with Silver Service cuisine, a brand-new Crew Bar called ‘Bar Aqua,’ a deli/ provisioning service, a high-end laundry facility with specialised units for silk and ‘delicates,’ a concierge service, two suites—one with a Jacuzzi, the other with an optimum view of the Sound—and for the wellness-discerning guest, group and private yoga lessons. It is safe to say that a visit to YCCS is indulgence at its finest.

SEA / MARINAS WE LOVE

Nanny Cay (BVI – Tortola) Cruising into Nanny Cay Resort & Marina, the welcoming, full-service establishment presents a boatyard, hotel accommodation, shops, restaurants, and a pleasant expanse of beach. Conceived in the mid-70s, Nanny Cay is renowned for its comfortable, loyal nautical community that encompasses ‘village camaraderie.’ Famous for hosting the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, the BVI Charter Yacht Show, the Caribbean 1500, the Biennial Caribbean Oyster Regatta, and many other well-known sailing events, the modern, naturally sheltered marina holds berths for 222 yachts. Comprised of a high-speed fuel dock, pump out station, luxury shower facilities and restrooms, and water and ice from the marina’s own R/O plant, Nanny Cay’s full-service boatyard now has storage for 310 yachts. Wide ranging on-site services include shipwrights, fiberglass and Awlgrip experts, yacht fitting, technical, electrical, and mechanical marine engineering services, yacht surveying, rigging, a sail loft, laundry, internet access, provisioning stores, yacht sales, and yacht management. Nanny Cay also operates a 6,000-square foot chandlery which has over 6,000 products in stock and a special-order service. Up to 10 megayachts over 100 feet can now dock there and the new outer marina currently has 42 slips; by August 2017, 120 slips will be completed, suitable for yachts from 30 feet to 75 feet with T-heads and a bulkhead capable of berthing megayachts 150 feet in length. The addition of the final 78 slips this year will give Nanny Cay a total of 300 slips split between the inner and outer marina; most definitely a comfortable location for a break before setting sail again.

Yacht Haven Grande (USVI – St Thomas) Our final stop at Yacht Haven Grande in Long Bay, St. Thomas is summarised by security, luxury, and convenience in abundance. Being part of the IGY Marinas network, the organisation caters great rates and services when travelling between the facilities throughout the Caribbean and North America. Built in 2006, the establishment holds 46 megayacht slips up to 656 feet with the greatest ‘visitor’ to date being the 453-foot yacht Rising Sun.

38 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

Available services include inslip high speed fuelling, in-slip Blackwater and waste oil removal, as well as the airlift and logistical resources of St Thomas. A refurbished, free WiFi system creates more coverage and higher bandwidth – always important these days in our internet driven world, and on-site provisioning and ships’ chandlery are just steps away from the docks. The adjacent open-air lifestyle galleria, The Shops at Yacht Haven Grande, offers premium duty-free shopping, a variety of restaurants and bars from casual to fine salon and spas, and exciting events and

nightlife. YHG also hosts community events such as concerts, farmers’ markets, and family days frequently throughout the year. ‘Wellness’ being a popular pursuit is catered for via complimentary Yoga, workout classes, sports’ nights, and fitness competitions. There’s even a medical clinic and chiropractic office on property. Crews—who spend most of their time entertaining guests—are granted access to exclusive resort style amenities, including a pool, gym, and sports courts. Activities and events are held weekly during season, including pool parties thrown every Sunday. ■

Moonbeam – one of BVI’s traditional sloops

A Private Partnership with the College to Aid the Sloops W O R D S A N D P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y G E O F F R E Y B R O O K S , C U R AT O R – VIRGIN ISLANDS MARITIME MUSEUM

OVER THE PAST THREE years, the College has found it more and more difficult to fund the maintenance and repair of our traditional wooden sloops. Four years ago, our active fleet of sloops was up to an all-time high of five and prospects for the future looked bright. Today, we only have three that are sea-worthy while two remain hauled out in the boatyard at Nanny Cay in dire need of repairs. Wooden boats—like any boat— need regular maintenance or they will deteriorate rapidly. Exposure to the sun and the absence of being in the water, make the planks shrink and

40 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

decay quickly. The longer they remain out, the worse their condition gets. Our two traditional sloops Sea Moon and Moon Beam have reached the point where their condition is critical. It is with this in mind that I have reached out to the private sector to raise monies for the benefit of our sloops and the Maritime Heritage programme in general. One of my duties is developing funding possibilities from private groups and individuals, so in the fall of last year (2016), I began discussions with individuals who have assisted me in keeping our programme alive. The response to my inquiries was

immediate and overwhelmingly positive. A group of us met for the first time in early September and have formed what is called the Virgin Islands Sloop Foundation. We created a board and have been meeting regularly for the past six months. We have applied for incorporation and by the time this article is published, we should be registered as a nonprofit organisation. The members of the board of the VI Sloop Foundation consist of representatives from the BVI Spring Regatta Committee, the management of Nanny Cay Marina, the Governor’s office, the College, Sister Ship Yacht Management, VP Bank,

aLookingGlass, a local shipwright, and a local sloop Captain. All of these individuals and organisations are no strangers to our local sloops. They’ve been supporters contributing time, money, and talent to help me maintain our sloops and our programme for over 15 years. In addition, every one is a veteran sloop sailor, which is a prerequisite for membership on the board. Now our relationship has been formalised, we can operate on a higher plane in an enhanced position since all of our talents are pooled together and structured in an organisation. Our purpose is: • To preserve the maritime heritage of the Virgin Islands by ensuring that the history and knowledge of traditional wooden boat building is passed on to future generations.

bvipropertyyacht.com

Our mission is: • To provide funding and supervision for the maintenance and restoration of historically significant wooden sloops in the Territory. • To organise and develop programmes that teach and enhance boat-building skills as a learning opportunity for the youth of the Virgin Islands. As we move forward, we’ve already begun several fundraising initiatives in which included is a founding membership card, requiring a one-time fee of 50 dollars. We feel confident that we will receive the funds needed not only to repair our existing sloops, but to enhance our Museum activities and bring the College’s Maritime Heritage programme to a level never before dreamed of. ■

BRUNCH TO ME IS ALL about Eggs Benedict! It is a dish that I’m guaranteed to have at any brunch. Recently, I was in Annapolis and had an amazing crab cake Benedict which was absolutely to-die-for. It got me thinking how I could create my spin on it and I came up with a salmon cake. It really is a wonderful alternative to the regular English muffin – much more flavour and texture, and probably a bit healthier too! Did I mention it’s gluten free? I love the sweetness the comes through in the salmon cake, the tanginess of the roasted tomato, and hollandaise and creamy poached egg. A delicious combination. Eggs Benedict has a few steps to it, however, it can be done at home. If you haven’t made it before, make sure to test it out before you try it on a crowd so that you know what to expect. Enjoy and Happy Easter!

Eggs Benedict with Sweet Potato Salmon Cake For the Salmon Cake M A K E S A P P R OX . 6 C A K E S L E V E L : E A SY GLUTEN FREE! INGREDIENTS 3 /4 lb cooked, flaked salmon 2 small sweet potatoes 1 tbsp of olive oil 1 tbsp of butter 1 /3 cup diced red bell pepper 1 /4 cup diced shallot 1 tbsp minced ginger 1 tbsp mayonnaise 1 egg 1 tbsp Salt 1 tsp Pepper Your favourite hot sauce (to taste) METHOD Start by peeling the sweet potato and cut into same in size cubes. Transfer to pot filled with salted water. Bring the sweet potato to boil and simmer until fork tender. Strain and transfer to food processor and puree until

smooth. Transfer to medium mixing bowl. In a medium sized frying pan, heat up oil and butter on medium heat. When the butter is foaming, add the bell pepper, shallot, and ginger. Cook until tender not browned. Add the cooked vegetables to the sweet potato puree, along with the flaked salmon and the final 6 ingredients. Mix together well. Using a 1 /3 cup measure, scoop the mixture and form into a patty (like you would making burgers). Transferred to a baking tray lined with parchment. Wrap the baking sheet with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to firm the patties up. At this point you can freeze the patties on the tray. Once frozen, they can be wrapped individually and kept frozen in a zip top bag for up to four months. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and bake for 30 – 40 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.

For the Roasted Tomato INGREDIENTS 1 medium sized tomato Drizzle of olive oil Salt & Pepper

METHOD Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Slice tomato into thick rounds (1cm thick – approx. 4 slices per tomato). Place onto baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, season with salt, pepper, and roast for 25 – 30 minutes. Try to time this at the same time the salmon cakes are baking. Set aside until ready to assemble eggs benedict.

For the Poached Eggs INGREDIENTS 4 eggs Juice of 1 lemon METHOD Bring water to a gentle simmer. Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to water. Gently crack 1 egg into a ramekin or glass (to help with pouring). Using a slotted spoon, slowly swirl the water in a wide circular motion to form a vortex. Gradually add the egg and allow to simmer for around 5 minutes or until the egg whites are cooked, but the egg yolks are still runny. Time will differ depending on heat.

TIP You can make poached eggs in advance! Follow the first five steps, and transfer straight to an ice bath and keep in refrigerator until ready to use. Simply heat through in a pot of simmering water for no more than 1 minute – you don’t want to overcook your eggs!

For the Hollandaise Sauce INGREDIENTS 4 egg yolks 2 tbsp lemon juice (or to tasted) 6 oz cold cubed butter METHOD Using the double boiler method, bring a small pot of water to a simmer and place a heat proof bowl over the top. Add the egg yolks and whisk until they begin to turn lighter in colour. Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, save the other for the end. Gradually add 1 cube of butter at a time while whisking constantly. After each cube has been incorporated, add another. Alternate by whisking over the heat and off the heat to prevent from seizing or separating. This process may take 20 minutes or so. Add remaining lemon juice. TIP Unfortunately hollandaise does not keep well. You can make about 1 hour ahead of time. If it thickens too much, you can add just a touch of the warm water from the poached egg liquid to loosen up.   TO ASSEMBLE Place salmon cake on the plate, followed by the roasted tomato, optional spinach, poached egg, and finally spoon over the hollandaise sauce. Add a sprinkle of cayenne (watch out, it is spicy!) or cracked black pepper for garnish. Serve with roasted asparagus if desired!

Crepes are one of the very first things I remember learning to cook in the kitchen as a kid. So whenever I make them, it takes me back to my childhood when my mum and I would spend the morning whipping up dozens of crepes for a big festive brunch. We would set them out on the table, family style, and lay out all of the fillings. We would fill them with whatever we had in the house, lemon, sugar, chocolate hazelnut spread, maple syrup, fruit and honey. I hope you enjoy making them as much as I do and who knows, maybe this will be the start of a new brunch tradition in your house!

Flambé Banana Filling

MAKES 8 L E V E L E A SY !

MAKES ABOUT 2 CUPS L E V E L E A SY INGREDIENTS 4 oz butter 6 bananas, peeled and sliced 1 /4 cup brown sugar 1 /2 tsp cinnamon 1 /4 cup rum   METHOD Start by melting the butter in a medium sized frying pan on medium high heat. Add the bananas, sugar and cinnamon, and cook until sugar starts to melt. Off the heat, add the rum and allow to cool down for about 5 minutes until a caramel sauce is formed.   WARNING! Rum is flammable – please take caution when doing this step and never pour rum from the bottle. ■

INGREDIENTS 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 /4 caster sugar 3 eggs 1 1/4 cup whole milk 2 tbsp melted unsalted butter + more to coat frying pan METHOD In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk together flower and sugar and form a well. In a large liquid measuring jug, add milk and eggs, whisk well until properly combined. Slowly add egg mixture to well of the flour mixture and begin to whisk, gradually combining the flour into the egg mixture. Add the melted butter at the end and whisk so there are no lumps. Refrigerate for about a 1 /2 hour. Over medium heat, heat up a 6 inch, non-stick frying pan and add butter to coat. Using a 1 /3 cup measure, add the batter and swirl slowly around the pan so that a thin layer is formed. Allow to cook on first side for about 1 minute and flip over for another minute. They should be golden and soft. Layer up on a plate and keep in warm oven with a cloth over them. Repeat steps above until batter is finished, re-coating the butter in between to prevent from sticking.

Creative Expressions in Watercolour by Jinx Morgan WO R DS BY ST E P H E N L F R A N C E P H OTO G R A P H Y BY R A I N B OW V I S I O N S BV I

INTRODUCING PEOPLE TO THE BEAUTY of the BVI is our ‘ambassador artist’ Judith ‘Jinx’ Morgan – a watercolour painter with a fondness for lightness and brightness of our beautiful BVI vistas. “Finding a wonderful subject and trying to capture its essence on paper,” is Jinx’s motivation as she explained that the BVI is never short of stimulating material. “There are many technical aspects to watercolour, but they are secondary to having a vision of what you want to say and saying it convincingly,” she continued. “What often inspires me, is the counterpoint of sunshine and shadow that is especially dramatic in the tropics.” Many residents will know Jinx by her particularly distinctive signature works and the renowned establishment The Sugar Mill Hotel on Tortola, which Jinx and her husband Jeff sold more than a year

ago. Despite her clear skill in the art world, this was not the artist’s original background. Born in California, Jinx was raised in the San Francisco area, and attended Stanford University, where she graduated with an English degree. She and her college roommate wrote two bestselling cookbooks that led to a column in Bon Appétit

Magazine. Writing a further five cookbooks, for several years Jinx was also the food columnist of American Airlines inflight magazine. Another career shift took place when Jinx and husband Jeff arrived in the BVI in 1982

to take over The Sugar Mill Hotel and she began painting five years after. “Although I didn’t study art in school, I have been fortunate to have had many inspiring teachers including Roger Burnett, David Millard, Judi Betts, Jean Dobie, Carolyn Lord, and James Godwin Scott,” said Jinx. “When my responsibilities at the hotel prevented me from travel, we decided to offer workshops to other artists at The Sugar Mill and that way I was able to take the classes too.” Like many artists here in the BVI, the Territory itself raises the creative abilities out of Jinx; however, her representation of the islands uniquely replicates the natural beauty, fascinating history, and various boats travelling through the region. Painting with the same group of artists for many years, Jinx is part of a developed community of creatives who serve as an honest, humble, supportive group. “We paint every Thursday and after painting all morning, we critique one another’s work,” said Jinx of the friendship circle. “When we first started the critiques, we were all very polite about others’ works, but now we’re fairly ruthless and we like it better that way as we learn so much more from one another. That is not to say we always take the critique to heart and change things in a painting. Sometimes suggestions are very helpful in improving the work, but often they just make us think and reinforce our initial approach. “In 2006, 15 of my watercolours were included in a show in London at BVI House. Also, during the Duke of Gloucester’s visit to the BVI, he purchased one of my paintings as a memento of his trip. My work is in private and corporate collections in the United States, England, Canada, Italy, and Austria as well as the Caribbean.” In 2015, many will remember that Jinx held a very popular show at the

52 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

Old Sugar Works Museum. Lisa Grey of Images, BVI organised the event, displaying over 40 of Jinx’s paintings. “In 2016, The Art Council of the BVI International Arbitration Centre selected six of my paintings to hang in their new offices in the Ritter Building and four of my paintings were chosen to hang on the walls of the Legislative Council of the British Virgin Islands,” Jinx continued. With a subtle aim to provide a souvenir of the BVI’s beauty for all people who visit, she has had many examples where admirers of her works use them in precisely the manner she enjoys hearing.

“A gentleman purchased one of my hammock paintings and I asked him where he was going to hang it,” said the artist. “He said he thought it would go in his office. A week or so later I received an e-mail from him in which he said ‘when I’m feeling really stressed, I look at the opposite wall and I’m back in Tortola relaxing in that hammock. It’s like taking a mini vacation.’ I hope all my paintings give that much pleasure. ■
