SKyPAC Inagural Season Brochure

Page 1

Welcome to the Inaugural Season of the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center While the first season, from March through June, will be short in length, we hope it will go a long way toward setting your expectations for the kinds of performances you can now see in downtown Bowling Green. We’ve included Broadway shows and family shows to appeal to all ages. There’s music – the Blues Brothers Review officially sanctioned by Dan Akroyd and The Belushi Estate, rock-and-roll great Leon Russell and Bowling Green’s own Sam Bush, father of Newgrass. And there are the performances more difficult to categorize: a comedian, an acrobatic troupe, and an illusionist you have to see to believe...or not. This season brochure is your map to becoming a part of the very first season in your brand-new performance center. The Ticket Office is open in our temporary trailers at the corner of College Street and 7th Avenue while we are navigating the final construction details to get us to Opening Night. Stop in, go online, call us or send in the enclosed order form to reserve your space. Welcome aboard SKyPAC’s very first magical adventure!

Damn Yankees Monday, March 19th - 7:30pm “Six months out of every year, when we cook for them it never pays, Instead of praising our goulash, they’re appraising the plays of Willie Mays!” So sings the wife of a 1950’s baseball fanatic who trades his soul to the Devil for a chance to lead his favorite team in the pennant race against The New York Yankees. He leaves her and the goulash behind and as young baseball sensation, Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life (and wife) he’s left at home. With the help of a handy escape clause and a guilt-ridden temptress named Lola, Joe outsmarts the Devil, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series. Filled with hit songs like “Whatever Lola Wants” and “You Gotta Have Heart”, DAMN YANKEES hit 7 Tony Award winning home runs!

Young Frankenstein Wednesday, April 18th - 7:30pm The classic Mel Brooks movie is ALIVE...and it’s headed here! You’ll have a monstrously good time at this spectacular new production, winner of the 2008 Outer Critics Circle Award and the Broadway.com Audience Award for Best Musical! Don’t miss the sensational cast delivering all your favorite moments from the classic film, plus brand-new show-stopping numbers for the stage, including “Transylvania Mania”, “He Vas My Boyfriend” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen) as he attempts to create a monster--but not without scary and hilarious complications. The brains behind the laughter is mad genius and three-time Tony® winner Mel Brooks himself--who wrote the music and lyrics and co-wrote the book- along with his record-breaking team from The Producers: five-time Tony-winning director and choreographer, Susan Stroman, and three-time Tony-winning writer, Thomas Meehan.

Sam Bush

Friday, March 30th - 7:30pm

Alternately known as the King of Telluride and the King of Newgrass, Bowling Green native and Grammy award-winning Sam Bush has been honored by the Americana Music Association and the International Bluegrass Music Association. Bush has helped to expand the horizons of bluegrass music, fusing it with jazz, rock, blues, funk and other styles. He’s the co-founder of the genre-bending New Grass Revival and an in-demand musician who has played with everyone from Emmylou Harris and Bela Fleck to Charlie Haden, Lyle Lovett and Garth Brooks. And though Bush is best known for jaw-dropping skills on the mandolin, he is also a threetime national junior fiddle champion and Grammy award winning vocalist. Circles Around Me, Bush’s seventh and latest solo album, is an aurally inspiring mix of bluegrass favorites and complementary new songs. “I don’t know why, but it felt right at this moment in my life to go back and revisit some things that I’ve loved all my life, which is bluegrass and, unapologetically, newgrass,” says Bush. “After all these years of experimenting —and there’s experimentation on this record too —I’ve come full circle.”

Nashville Backstage with H1T Songwriters Saturday, June 23rd - 7:30pm Nashville Backstage features A-list songwriters representing the very best in America today. Maia Sharp (The Dixie Chicks, Bonnie Raitt, Edwin McCain, Cher), Jim Photoglo (Alabama, Kathy Mattea, Kenny Rogers) and Tony Haselden (George Strait, Keith Whitley, Shania Twain) and Craig Carothers (Peter, Paul and Mary; Trisha Yearwood, Kathy Mattea) These talented songwriters will share the stage for a special, one-night-only performance, giving an insider’s look at songwriting and the story behind the hits. Maia emphasizes that, “to a songwriter, there’s nothing better than having one of your songs recorded by a top artist, but to be the songwriter, getting a chance to perform these songs for a live audience the way they were written, is also very special.” Nashville Backstage offers a unique opportunity to look inside the minds of the songwriters, who have given so many artists the pulse of their music. Jon Reep SATURDAY, MAY 19th - 7:30pm Does this face look familiar? Maybe you’ve seen Jon on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”, Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” or the half-hour special “Comedy Central Presents: Jon Reep”. Maybe you’ve seen him on TBS’s “Pit Stop Comedy”, NBC’s “Late Friday”, or the ABC Sitcom “Rodney” as Officer Gerald Bob the dim-witted cop. If not then you probably know Jon from Dodge’s popular ad campaign as the “Hemi guy”. Jon is known to millions as the redheaded hillbilly in the Dodge Ram commercials who leans out of a beat-up car and utters the now famous line: “That thing gotta Hemi?” One of the hardest working comics in America, Jon is selling out venues and getting standing ovations in clubs and theaters across the country. His show is supersonic energy filled with nonstop characters, super clever writing, and, of course, the one talent that separates Jon from all other comedians in the world: He’s the best redneck dancer since Elvis.
