Goodbye, Sarah Jane

A tribute to the late Elisabeth Sladen The Doctor Who world has just been tipped on its end with the sad death of Elisabeth Sladen.

Tributes began flooding in. people who knew and loved her on and off screen left heartfelt tributes.

Elisabeth Sladen joined Doctor Who in 1973 for Jon Pertwee's final year. She played journalist Sarah Jane Smith, who pretending to be her Aunt, met the Doctor whilst she was investigating. Soon it was off in adventures in time and space with Tom Baker who took over as the Doctor in 1974.

On hearing the sad news he posted this on his website. “Sarah Jane dead? No, impossible!

Impossible. Only last week I agreed to do six new audio adventures with her for Big Finish Productions.

"She can't be dead. But she is: she died yesterday morning. Cancer.

"I had no idea she was ill; she was so private, never wanted any fuss, and now, gone. "A terrible blow to her friends and a shattering blow for all those fans of the programme whose lives were touched every Saturday evening by her lovely heroic character, Sarah-Jane Smith.

"Lis Sladen was very important to me, you know

When I joined the little world of Doctor Who, Lis was already a star. She had an enormous success with Jon Pertwee.

"She was good pals with the Brigadier, our beloved Nicholas Courtney; she knew all the regular directors. She was adored

by Barry Letts, the producer who cast her in the role.

"She always said she was Barry's girl. It was for that reason she decided to leave the show. But it was not necessary at all.

The fans adored her, Philip Hinchcliffe, our new and glamorous producer, adored her, so did David Maloney, her favourite director.

"Terry Walsh, the regular stunt man adored her. Once in deep, dark Wooky Hole caves Lis was almost swept away in a small boat, fifty feet from a terrifying black hole that looked like the entrance to hell. In a flash Terry Walsh dived in and caught the boat and all was well, thanks to the devotion of Terry. Lis was safe and and the show could go on.

"So when I replaced Jon Pertwee, it must have been an anxious time for Lis; it was a very anxious time for me. Following in the big footsteps of Jon was

'It's so sad. It was a joy to know the woman and an honour to have worked with her, I loved her.' Russell T Davies daunting. Tom Baker? Never heard of him. And so we started on the first story under Barry Letts as director. We did the location stuff first and I just obeyed orders; running about, with the Brigadier and that silly car Bessie Trotwood, I think it was called: too small for me, but also in its own way a "character". Jon loved cars.

"But back in the rehearsal room things were quieter and there was time to put in little details, time for Lis and me to get acquainted, time for me to try and make a little mark, so to speak.

"And Lis laughed at my silly antics; yes, she did, she laughed me to success. We both came from Liverpool, that small detail helped. We both loved old movies. And quite suddenly Lis and Ian Marter and Tom Baker were a trio.

"It is so consoling when one is sad and bereft to remember the good times, the laughter, the glamour; yes, the glamour: we three switched on the lights at Blackpool! A very great honour. We performed a little melodrama directed by (guess who?) yes, David Maloney! And now Lis was adored by Ian Marter and Tom Baker too.

"And it never ceased. And in the evenings Lis, would simply disappear back to wherever we were staying and the rest of us would often be raucous! And too soon she decided to leave; no fuss at all, all was calm. And Philip Hinchcliffe gave her lovely farewell party at the Hilton.

"Those sweet memories of happy days with Lis Sladen, the lovely, witty, kind and so talented Lis Sladen. I am consoled by the memories. I was there, I knew her, she was good to me and I shall always be grateful, and I shall miss her."

John Barrowman has told fans he was “proud to work with such an icon of the sci-fi world. Your Dr Who family are very sad and will miss you and your beautiful smile.”

Current Doctor Who star Matt Smith also added some kind words, expressing how much he would miss the Sladen's “grace and kindness.”

"What struck me about Lis was her grace. She welcomed me, educated me, and delighted me with her tales and adventures on Doctor Who. “And she also seemed to have a quality of youth that not many people retain as they go through life.

“Her grace and kindness will stay with me because she had such qualities in abundance and shared them freely.

“I will miss her, as will the world of Doctor Who and all the Doctors that had the good pleasure to work with Lis Sladen and travel the universe with Sarah Jane."

Lifelong Doctor Who fan Stephen Fry wrote : 'What terribly sad news about Elisabeth Sladen - her Sarah Jane was part of my childhood.

Deepest sympathy to her family.'

And Jonathan Ross added: 'RIP Elisabeth Sladen aka Sarah Jane.

Sad news.'

In a 2006 interview ahead of rejoining Doctor Who, she said: 'I think it has lovely layers and I'd defend the programme to anyone.

'I'm very emotionally part of that programme and I think a lot of the people who worked on it are. You used to love going to work every day.'

Sladen is survived by her actor husband of 42 years, Brian Miller, and their actress daughter Sadie.

Records Ross Jenkins Ross Jenkins was assigned to assist the Doctor on his trip to the Rattigan Academy. The Doctor was quite fond of Ross (or Greyhound as was his radio name).

Ross was a UNIT soldier so was on the front line in the fight against the Sontarons he was killed leaving the Doctor a friend down.

Malcolm Taylor A bus has disappeared into a wormhole, the police call in the specialists: UNIT. They get a call from the Doctor which pleases Malcolm. He's a massive fan of the Doctor who is a bit of a legend around the UNIT bases.

Malcolm is especially fanatic about the Doctor, being as he is: UNIT's scientific advisor, he is now in the role that the Doctor once held. Then, crisis averted, Malcolm meets his hero.

This week

Fish custard

Having just regenerated, The Doctor is hungry. He stops (crashes, rather) at the house of a young Amelia Pond. He tries everything from Apples to beans and toast. Amelia, being Scottish even fries some bacon, but then, he finds it – assuring this new Doctor in our hearts: Fish Fingers & Custard shows us he hasn't lost his weird ways. Well that's 900 years of time travel for you.

smashing their way through shop windows. Jon wows the audience with his postregenerative bewilderment, including his singing in the shower whilst trying NOT to be detected bring this episode together with a mix of everything. It's just a pity no-one had a beard.

Beard fans beware, There's a new bad ass in town, making his first appearance in Terror of the Autons, is the Master.

Spearhead from Space was one of the first 'Classic' Doctor Who stories I saw. It mirrors the revived series' Rose so much.

Both feature: Autons, a new Doctor and a new companion. Spearhead and Rose are very different yet the same. They were both new. This was the first time Doctor Who was in colour and Rose gave the 21st Century Doctor Who (and better for it).

As with most older Doctor Who episodes the plot drags a little but at only 4 episodes (versus 7 for the next episode) it whizzes by with chases from plastic men and possibly the most iconic scene (which was recreated in Rose) of the Autons

His debut is fantastic as played by Roger Delgado (DWV must apologise for constantly refering to him as Delago - Ed) and this sets the scene for him to make an appearance in every story that season. Terror of the Autons is not disimilar to Spearhead. This story introduces the lovable Jo Grant who is the charming alongside the Doctor's occasional grumpy old man of the universe. They work so well together that you don't notice how bad the Autons look compared to their previous adventure. But, thanks to the restoration team you can now watch all that costume related crappery in its original spec. The picture is so clear it stands up against modern day HD. There's no Blu-Ray planned just yet though.

regeneration The first time the Doctor regenerated, nobody had any idea what was happening. He had collapsed in the TARDIS and suddenly he became another man. Was this man still the Doctor? Had this new man teleported and replaced our Doctor. Would we see the first Doctor again? It would all be a matter of time.

3 years later, it happened again. The Doctor changed. “Your appearance has changed before, it can change again”. The Doctor was put on trial and found guilty of stealing the TARDIS. He had his face changed and he was exiled to earth. Why, the question remains, was he exiled in the TARDIS that wasn't his?

The Doctor returns from Metebilis 3 worse for the wear with radiation sickness. He collapses on the floor and, dies. He actually dies. Sarah Jane closes his eyes. This is the first time we hear it called a regeneration when Cho-Je “gives the process a push and the cells will regenerate, he will become a new man”. Jon Pertwee becomes Tom Baker in the quickest regeneration ever.

During Logopolis, Tom Baker is being stalked by a white figure. By the end of the episode he hanging by a finger to a radio telescope. He falls, at varying speeds if his companions reactions are anything to go by. The white figure walks into the Doctor and he regenerates. “The Watcher! He was the Doctor all along!” We never hear him called the Watcher, yet the companions know his name, another DW mystery we're never likely to know the answer to.

The Doctor and Peri are infected with deadly Spectrox Toxaemia. The only known cure is bat's milk. There's only one dose and predictably he gives it to his friend, but is unsure whether he'll survive the regeneration. The Doctor would die for anyone: more so for his companions and he regenerates into Colin Baker. Could have been worse!

An attack on the TARDIS causes the Doctor to regenerate. There are many things wrong with this. Why does his companion not die? The TARDIS is indestructible, so why are it's contents not safe. The truth, in real life was that Colin Baker had been sacked and in protest refused to film the regeneration scene.

The person we see on the floor is Slyvester McCoy in a blonde wig.

The TV movie is often slated for slowly starting with a ridiculous regeneration that slows the pace of the plot. The Doctor is shot when gangland thugs randomly shoot at him, unflinched by a blue box landing. He dies in surgery by a well meaning nurse confused by his alien biology. He later regenerates in the morgue.

Determined not to repeat the failure of the movie, Russell T Davies' relaunched series didn't answer the question of how Paul McGann became Christopher Eccleston. We think it was to do with the Time War, the epic battle between the Daleks and the Time Lords.

Rose has taken the power of the heart of the TARDIS in order to defeat the Daleks. But it is killing her. The only thing to save her is to absorb the power out of her himself. He knows it'll kill him, but he's prepared to die for any of his companions. This leads to the most explosive, and the first standing-up, regeneration ever.

The Doctor knows his death is imminent. “He will knock four times.” He,and we, think this is the Master as he's got 4 beats in his head. But it turns out to be [SPOILER ALERT] (but if you haven't seen this yet, you ain't no Doctor Who fan) Wilf, trapped in the

Radiation shelter, which is about to flood with the very stuff. To save his friend (again) he bravely releases the door knowing he'll be trapped in a radiated room.

He takes one last trip around all of his friends and previous companions to say goodbye , while not interfering with his time lines.

Then, in the TARDIS after the worst last words ever “I don't want to go” he regenerates into Matt Smith's Doctor with the best first words ever “Legs! I've still got legs!”

Doctor whoreview The Gunfighters The Gunfighters is one of those stories that went down in history... because it was history. This is one of the few stories that involves nothing but history. No aliens, nor mad scientists just the unaltered spectacular of the Wild Wild West.

The story begins with the Doctor needing a dentist, and with a time machine that can take you anywhere and to any time, the moment of dental excellence is obviously at the OK Coral.

In it's day this will have seemed like a perfectly good story, but when compared to the modern day this story fails a little. The sets are brilliant and its all very realistic, except the plywood floors sound nothing like spurs clacking against what should be a concrete floor.

The fight scenes are alright but you can tell this is not real and then the story just never moves. The whole thing is a bore. The Doctor is mistaken for Doc Holliday, despite looking nothing like him even wearing his hat and having his gun. Its just not plausible. Its 100 minutes of my life I'm never getting back.

I sat watching this apart from the gaps I suffered due to sleep. And even after napping the story had not moved.

For a story that is revered in Doctor Who history, there are far better Hartnell stories. Many of the non-existent stories are far better written and just feel like Doctor Who should do.

However, this is not Doctor Who. There is a reason every scene change isn't heralded by the song “The Last Chance Saloon.” For it's entire 4 episode duration we are subjected to hearing this tune that drives me close to the the brink and is quite possibly the out-of-date icing on a stale cake. And don't even mention Peter Purves' Southern accent. I don't know what South he is pretending to come from but it 'aint no place I ever heard from.

I have never given a bad review to a Doctor Who episode, and I've seen Dimensions in Time, through my fingers with mouth aghast at the horrific crime against Doctor Who I've ever seen. But Gunfighters just wasn't my cup of tea, or whisky (sorry whiskey).

It's a momentums moment in Doctor Who history when one Doctor becomes another. Jon Pertwee's departure is one of the most well written, directed and acted demises of all time resulting in one of the most heart-wrenching moments ever.

DEATH OF THE DOCTOR

The Doctor has been lost in the time vortex after being thwarted with radiation on Metebilis 3, for weeks now. All hope is given up until Sarah Jane and the Brigadier hear a familiar sound. He's OK. The Doctor is still alive! However, he's in a bad way. “A tear Sarah Jane?” is the Doctor's immortal last words.

This is one of those rare moments we will never get in the new series. No music. No effects. This is the Doctor's death and his friends are around to say goodbye. Its painfully beautiful. But he's dead. There's no way he can regenerate now. By the Doctor always gets by with a little help from his friends. Cho-Jee, fellow Time lord, gives the regeneration a shove and the Doctor changes before their eyes. Its a simple regeneration just a quick fade away and into Tom Baker. Not like the blowing the arse off the TARDIS regenerations we get now. Perhaps it's better that the Doctor fades away – after all thats what he does, to quote Martha Jones “He never stops, he never stays, he never asks to be thanked.”

From the death of one Doctor to another as we see a tearful Tenth Doctor tell Wilf about his imminent demise.

DEATH OF another DOCTOR The most anticipated episode of David Tennant's era as the Doctor came in the form of “The End of Time”, the end of his song. In a café somewhere in London, the Doctor meets up again with Wilfred Mott. They've both lived lives. The Doctor has faced his fears many times but never one like this, the fear of his own demise. Wilf hasn't faced his. He was a self proclaimed little idiot in the Army and never really fought in the war. But now he's on a war – to save his friend.

The Doctor has been alone for so long. He's been rattling around in that box for so long that he hasn't had anyone to open up to. But now he's sitting at a table with the closest thing to a friend he's got. The Doctor has had to put all this to the back of his mind, what else can he do? Suddenly, this outpouring of built up worry and anguish just pours out. Its the most emotional moment of Doctor Who and David Tennant's finest performance.

Regeneration, “it still feels like dying... I die and some new man just saunters off and I'm dead”. It sums up our entire emotions to this. We don't want the Doctor to die, we want the Doctor to be David Tennant forever. We don't care that we'll feel the same way about Matt Smith when his time comes but for that moment we just don't want things to change. Thats why this scene is so great – the Doctor feels the same way, he likes being the Tenth Doctor.

Back when Patrick Troughton was playing the Doctor we knew very little. We had no idea of his family, his species and even regeneration wasn't a given. But even when your 500 years old you still have a lot of memories to share.

Memories of a timelord

The TARDIS crew has just had a new addition. Victoria has just witnesses the slaughter of her family at the ray-guns of the Daleks. She's obviously upset but she is holding back because she finds herself in yet another dangerous situation this time at hands of some awakening Cybermen. While on night duty guarding the control room. The Doctor has a heart to heart: we've never seen the Doctor like this. He's kind, reassuring. Of course Victoria is never going forget her family, the Doctor probably can't remember his family, Victoria thinks, what with him being 500. That's not even middle age. Then in the most emotional moment of Troughton's era he recalls his family. “When I really want to remember them, I can... other times they sleep in my mind�. Its the first we hear of his family, and 40 years later we still know relatively nothing about his relatives. This scene is brilliantly acted, with bloody brilliant music, making this Troughtons greatest moment, it's just a shame it was almost lost at the hands of the BBC. Thankfully this episode was found later, in Hong Kong of all places!

When the great British Press get wind that the BBC are looking for a new Doctor – a few outlandish names are thrown into the pot. However, most of the time they seem to choose someone thats A) well known or B) has already been in Doctor Who. And besides Freema Agyeman, Colin Baker, Nicholas Courtney, Karen Gilllan no actor has played more than one character... and Jaqueline Hill.... oh dear!!

From the slightly probable Russell Tovey, David Walliams, Paterson Joseph, David Morrisey, Tom Ellis to the completely unlikely Billie Piper, Catherine Zeta Jones and even Top Gear's Richard Hammond.

“Lots of Planets have a north”

In 2005, Doctor Who was resurrected after the BBC had exterminated it some 18 years earlier. Christopher Eccleston was the entrusted with turning around the fortunes of the unloved member of the BBC family. And he did it with style. Before Doctor Who, Chris was most well known for his police inspector role in ITV detective drama “Cracker” alongside Robbie Coltrane and the title character in the movie Jude in which he shared some screen time with future successor David Tennant. The movie's poster even appears in the background of Bean: The Movie.

Chris' short time as the Doctor was overshadowed due to the press announcing shortly after the transmission of episode one that he was to leave the show at the end of this series. This meant that he would have the shortest on-screen tenure as the Doctor second only to Paul McGann's singular appearance.

Chris was a brilliant Doctor. He played his doctor as a man who had been through a lot since we had last seen him as Paul McGann. He'd just battled in the Time war against the Daleks and seen his entire race and planet die – revealed later to be his doing. No wonder that he shows no remorse when he and Rose meet a Dalek in the series. It is Rose who brings him back to the Doctor as he should be.

This Doctor was born out of battle and he's been hardened by it – even down to the tough guy leather coat.

The Doctor has never loved his companion. He had fond affection for Sarah Jane, Jo Grant and the rest... but there was never any notion of them getting off in the control room. Until Rose. Fiesty, Fearless, Fun and just a little bit Flirty Rose was everything the Doctor wanted. Her Ying to his Yang. There's just the small matter of Rose's boyfriend Mickey getting in the way which means they can never really.... you know. But who knows what Rose and her half-human Doctor are up to.

Chris didn't want to go down the same road as Tom Baker and get typecast in the role. (Tom played the Doctor for eight years and now his name is synonymous with Doctor Who). Chris didn't want to be known solely for Doctor Who and so left after just one “fantastic” series. He has said he will not reprise his role as the Doctor for the planned 50th anniversary event, as Tom Baker did in the 80's for “The Five Doctors”, which he later regretted. We can only live in hope.

His contribution does not stop, however. Without him Doctor Who would be very different (or not at all). We'd never have David and Matt's Doctors, Torchwood or The Sarah Jane Adventures if it weren't for the success of Chris' Doctor.

Doctor whoreview The Ark In Space

Tom Baker is a name now synonymous with Doctor Who along with TARDIS, Dalek and Jelly Babies. But in 1974, Tom Baker was making his first steps as the Doctor. He had just settled into the role in the imaginatively entitled episode “Robot”. The following episode is a classic. The Ark In Space is one of the best episodes of Tom Baker's era.

The Doctor, Sarah Jane and Harry arrive accidentally on the Ark thanks to that clumsy hand fisted idiot (to quote the Doctor), Harry, messing about with the TARDIS control) to find the entire human race hibernating, due to the Earth being inhabitable due to solar flares. They've overslept several thousand years thanks to a massive bug called the Wirrin. She's ripped apart the “alarm clock” on the suspended animation device and laid larvae in the body of the leader of the Ark, nicknamed Noah (Noah's Ark, ha ha). The Doctor fixes the alarm clock to save Sarah Jane after she's got herself stuck in the machinery thanks to resident clumsy idiot Harry.

Noah has began to turn into a full grown Wirrin. The special effects budget must have gone through the roof. They must have ordered special latex that made Noah look like the larve was bursting through his entire body and it's just a shame that on screen it seems to resemble bubble-wrap and green paint.

That honour falls to Sarah Jane.

But in true Doctor Who style not all goes to plan and just yards from the Doctor she gets stuck. (I mean whose idea was it to make them triangle?)

“You stupid foolish girl! I knew we should never have relied on you!

Hundreds of lives are at stake and you lie there blubbing!”

This is only Tom's second episode and we are watching him be mean to OUR Sarah Jane. We won't stand for it. But when you realise that he's only saying those thing so she'll free herself to prove the Doctor wrong. It turns into a beautiful moment between the Doctor and Sarah Jane and we see the true friendship between them.

Brilliant!

Later in the story it seems the only way to defeat the space-bugs is for someone to go through ventilation shafts.

TW: Children of Earth “We are coming... We are coming...”

Torchwood's luck just kept getting better, it had just been promoted to BBC One, Russell T. Davies returned to write an (albeit much shorter) series of Torchwood. Children of Earth was aimed at moving away from the “monster of the week” that was evident of the previous series.

Russell is good at these psychological thrillers. Things that mess with your minds and things that make you really stop and think... even sci-fi can make you think about the present. Here, he tugs at the heartstrings by bringing in children.

Parents will do anything to save their children – but what if you have to sacrifice them in order to save every child in the world. Makes you think.

CoE is Torchwood at it's best. The theft of the SUV is hilarious but the demise of the hub at the end of “Day One” is one of the best explosions in it's history (Doctor Who never exploded that good!). This is all very well.

Children all chanting at once. Torchwood are again public enemy number one. Gwen's pregnant. This isn't enough to span 5 episodes.

No what you need is the death of a main character. But after the body count of series 2 that is never going to happen...

Complacency is not a good thing. 3 days in and Ianto's death is one of the most heart wrenching moments not only Torchwood, but the entire DW universe, surpassed only by Rose's series 2 exit.

Nick Briggs (voice of the Daleks) makes his first on screen appearance and also starring in this series is Peter Capaldi, who also appeared in Doctor Who's “The Fires of Pompeii”, as government guy John Frobisher who has to face the dilemmas of sending his own kids away to prove he's behind the diabolical scheme. He decided he won't and kills his family and himself to save them from what the future would inevitably bring.

Moral Dilemmas come in thick and fast. Russell gives us the mother of all. Having just lost his partner, he's now faced with the decision of sacrificing his grandson (who we've only just met 5 days ago) in order to save the entire world.

TORCHWOOD

review

MIRACLE DAY In terms of awesome-ness, Torchwood set the bar pretty high with “Children of Earth”.

Continuing on with the move away from the tried, tired and tested “monster of the week” format, Miracle Day was one long story arc encompassing the entire series. Set in the US this time, the remaining members of the team reunite gaining a few Americans as they go.

Torchwood, however, are on the run. For some reason it works better that way – always on a knife edge watching over your shoulder. Its along the same lines as police dramas. Dramas about conforming to the rules are OK but you'd rather watch the rouge cop, breaking the law, enforcing his own brand of justice.

The storyline is one of Torchwood's best giving us a real moral dilemma that really makes you think. However, Torchwood's move to America did hinder it slightly. The first few episodes had to be more like a re-launch

rather than just a new series as Starz (the American channel that screened and co-produced the show) were anticipating millions of new viewers, in fact in barely struggled to get past the 1m mark, so the storyline is a bit slow to begin with but it does pick up later on and round about episode 8 and 9 you learn so much you think your head is going to explode... this is the case of most American drama.

A brilliant story needs a brilliant cast, and Torchwood got Alexa Havins, Mekhi Phiffer and Bill freaking Pullman. They're brilliant acting just brought the series around. And that ending.. Whoah, you kind of know it's coming, but when it does you're still the better for it. If you wanna know what I mean, get the DVD. Out Now
