Welcome to Waukaru!

Everyone at Waukaru invites you to be with us on September 12, 2015, at the farm east of Rensselaer, Indiana, to celebrate our 35th edition of “Cow Power.” We would love to host you and your family for dinner the evening before; all sale cattle will be on display.

This is a great time to be in the cow/calf business. We have received more calls for bred cows in the last twelve months than any other time. The call for Shorthorn and Shorthorn-influenced genetics is at an all-time high, and it is a long time from being over. The country needs cows, and the cows with lots of information are the ones generating the most interest. The beef industry has endured many struggles of late, and the experts agree that all the triumphs have stretched the typical cattle cycle by many years. CattleFax predicts that we have added multiple years to the expansion phase; leading university economists concur. This translates to expect high prices for feeders and females past the end of the decade. Yes, we may have hit the high; but, a few cents off the top is still record breaking profit for the cattle industry.

With all this in mind, we offer our best investment opportunities ever. This catalog contains two groups of cattle: primarily, highly proven females that leave no questions behind; females whose accuracies are extremely high due to our endless effort to collect all data. These proven cows will continue to perform at the stated level expressed in their EPDs. The second group is the largest offering of three-year-olds and younger that we have ever assimilated. They will soon be entering the prime of their life. A pregnant young female in 2015 will wean every calf in her lifetime at record price levels. A pregnant two or three has jumped every hoop, passed every test, and is ready to work for you during the best times the beef industry has ever witnessed.

In the next few pages, you will find the genetics that have expanded our market share into places that have been remiss of Shorthorn genetics for decades. On offer are more of the dams of the herd bulls that have been purchased by more cattlemen for more dollars than any other Waukaru sale.

Cattlemen of both purebred and commercial application have asked for sires that are stout, grow fast, calve unassisted, and are documented. Their dams and sisters sell on September 12, 2015; we hope you can be here.

2014 was a record breaking year for all segments of the beef complex in terms of price levels and profit margins for the cow/calf, feeder & packer operators. It’s the first time in history profitability has existed at the same time for all segments.

2015 and beyond is filled with excitement & opportunity to maintain those margins especially for cow/calf producers.

Now’s the time to invest in those superior and proven genetics to insure optimum production & performance in your breeding operation.

This offering again represents generations of selection practices based on improving each succeeding generation.

Selecting for genetic improvement for the economically important traits has always been paramount at Waukaru. As the seedstock industry has evolved to more documented performance, Expected Progeny Differences (EPD’s) and DNA mapping of the genome for identifying superior genetics, Waukaru is a breed leader in collecting and evaluating data and using the information as their primary selection tools. It has paid off as the 2015 American Shorthorn Association Genetic Evaluation Sire Summary is dominated by Waukaru sires in most all categories. Today Waukaru genetics are being used in North & South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, China and South Africa.

NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL LIVESTOCK EXPOSITION The NAILE has moved back the ownership deadline to September 15 for the 2015 NAILE Junior Heifer Shows. The Shorthorn Junior Heifer Show is scheduled for Sunday November 15, 2015. Any of the yearling heifers or heifer calves purchased in this sale would eligible for the NAILE Junior Show.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS Terms: Terms of the sale are cash or check (with proper I.D. i.e. valid driver’s license) payable to the Sale Clerk. Cattle will not be released from the Waukaru Farms until payment or satisfactory arrangements for payment has been made and approved by the Sale Manager. The Sale Manager reserves the right to require a certified check as settlement before releasing any cattle. All lots offered sell under the standard terms and conditions endorsed by the American Shorthorn Association.

Purchases and Risk: All animals are at owners risk prior to sale and become property of the buyer as soon as declared sold by the auctioneer.

Insurance: representatives of Great American Insurance Group will available sale day to assist you with any livestock insurance needs for your purchases.

Bidding: All lots sell to the highest bidder. Any disputes or challenges regarding bids will be settled by the auctioneer. His decision will be final.

Waukaru Ren Nan 0102 is sired by Coppertop 464 who will be remembered as one of the most consistent sires in Waukaru history. Every once in a while a female is born here that we anxiously await her first bull calf. Red Nan 0102 was such a female. After dropping two top females, 0102 finally started producing bulls. Red Nan 0102 is the mother of Norseman 4085, a member of the 2015 Reserve Champion Pen of 5 bulls at 2015 NWSS, high seller at 2015 The Gathering and now herd sire for John Bennet in Washington. Also, Jameson 4164, who is herd sire for MCF Farms of Missouri and tied for fourth high selling bull in that same sale. Combining impressive data with faultless phenotype is a tradition in the Red Nan clan.

Waukaru Red Nan 9043 has been an integral part of the successes we have experienced. 9043 is a maternal sister to the reigning Pacer Performance Sire, Gold Card 5042. Sired by the maternal legend, Coppertop 464 enables 9043 to be mated to a wide range of sires. Red Nan is one of the unique females of the breed, ranking above the top 15% of the breed for all growth and maternal EPD’s as well as marbling. Her first son, Wave Maker 1025, is currently the senior herd sire for Jim Sneed of Missouri; his pen of steers at the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity averaged Yield Grade 2 and low Choice. Augusta 0081 entered our donor program at a young age. Her first two sons, Lincoln 3140 and Hanckock 3126 helped anchor Reserve Champion Pen of Three Bulls at the 2014 NWSS and later sold for $6,000 each and reside in North Dakota for Lake Front Ranch and Bellevue Farms of Virginia. Augusta 0081 is also the dam of three replacement females for us, and the Lot 69 fancy heifer calf. Augusta 0081 is powerful, productive, and consistently averages nine embryos per flush.

This pair of full sisters are maternal siblings to Waukaru Patent 8161. Patent 8161 has sired the top selling bull in our spring bull sale every year since 2011 and many times the top three or four. Patent 8161 has helped open the gate to commercial herds that have not used Shorthorn genetics for decades. Currently, there is not an animal in the breed that has as large of birth to yearling spread as Patent 8161; the only individuals that are close are his progeny. This pair of Melita Rose sisters have a flush mate leading a team of bulls for Partin Ranch in Florida; they are designed to expand the market share of Shorthorn genetics worldwide, same as their predecessors.
