Welcome to Waukaru! Welcome to our 34th installment of Cow Power. Everyone at Waukaru extends the warmest welcome to be with us on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the farm east of Rensselaer, Indiana. Join us Friday evening for a great meal and time to visit; the cattle will be in their pens all afternoon. Bring the kids and the whole family; it will be a fun weekend. Wow! What a ride the beef industry has been! The demand for calves, fed cattle, replacement females, and herd sires has never been higher. The Shorthorn breed has had its share of highs as well. More bulls are being sold for more dollars than ever. The demand for Shorthorn and Shorthorn-influenced females has exceeded supply. It is a great day to be in the beef business. Most of the experts say these prices will be here for awhile, so let’s get busy and make some beef! We want to dedicate this weekend to Carl Jordan. He peacefully “finished his chores” on July 6, 2014. He loved this farm. He loved this great breed of cattle. He loved the friendships he made in the Shorthorn breed. Grandpa taught us a lot of important lessons, and he will be missed. We all had to pledge many years ago to make his cow herd as good as possible, in fact, the best; we will keep that in mind with every breeding decision. This group of females is amazing. They didn’t complain much through the “polar vortex” last winter, and they are ready to work for you. We are excited about mixing the newest genetics available with our proven female lines. There will be some new names in the next few pages, and names that have been trusted for many years. We continue to search the globe for the genetic pieces to make the most effortless brood cow in the business. Thank you for considering Waukaru genetics for your replacement females. The continued confidence that our repeat customers give us is humbling. All of the new names and faces we have met the last few months who want Shorthorn cattle are exciting. We promise we are going to be here a long time; it is going to be a great ride. If you need anything please call any of us, the sale manager, or 7577 S. 210 E. • Rensselaer, Indiana 47978 sales staff; we want to answer your questions. We will Barry and Anita Jordan: 219-866-3513 • cell: 219-819-0430 be updating our website www.waukaru.net with videos as Toby and Jodi Jordan: cell: 219-819-4603 Mark and Heidi Jordan: cell: 765-426-1990 well as the calving information on the fall bred females. A Message From The Sale Manager: I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the pages of the 2014 Waukaru Farms ‘COW POWER’ Production Sale Catalog. I would be remiss if I didn’t lead off this message without expressing my sorrow at the recent passing of the patriarch of Waukaru, Carl Jordan. There are mountains of memories and stories about Carl, many humorous. However, there are three things that will always stand out. Carl’s work ethic, his drive to make the farm, the cattle and the operation bigger & better at each turn and family. Always the visionary, Carl would embrace new ideas & technology. As they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree as it is evident Barry, Mark and Toby approach each day the same way. This offering again represents generations of selection practices based on improving each succeeding generation. Selecting for genetic improvement for the economically important traits has always been paramount at Waukaru. The emphasis to different traits has shifted over time to be congruent with the economic pressures of the present, as has the selection tools used by the beef industry. During the sixties, seventies & eighties, maximum growth & performance were of paramount importance. Waukaru enjoyed great success with the breeding program garnering Championships at the National & International level. With that success came opportunity to establish an international market for Waukaru genetics. Today Waukaru genetics are being used in North & South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, China and South Africa. As the seedstock industry has evolved to more documented performance, Expected Progeny Differences (EPD’s) and DNA mapping of the genome for identifying superior genetics, Waukaru again leads the way. Waukaru has become a breed leader in collecting and evaluating data and using the information as their primary selection tools. It has paid off as the 2014 American Shorthorn Association Genetic Evaluation Sire Summary is dominated by Waukaru sires in most all categories. With over 300 Shorthorn & Durham Red mother cows roaming the pastures at Waukaru, this ‘COW POWER’ Production Sale will provide you with one of the largest selections of documented genetics to be offered in the breed. It is with great pride to work with Barry, Toby and Mark in the successful marketing of the Waukaru prefix. If I can be of any assistance as you study this information packed sale catalog, please feel free to contact me at any time. Sincerely,

Alan Sears Sears Marketing Services

Waukaru Steers Turn Big Profit at the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity Cooperative Waukaru consigned 26 steers to the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity Cooperative (TCSCFC) in western Iowa. Seventyfive head of Shorthorn steers from across the country were consigned to this test. Nearly half of the male calves Waukaru produces in a year are merchandised as herd bulls, so these 26 head of steers came off the bottom half of all male calves produced at Waukaru. The cattle performed amazingly, especially through one of the most challenging winters on record. The progeny of Waukaru Patent 8161x excelled in the test. The highest profit steer of the entire test was a son of Patent and generated a check totaling $2,388.33 which computes to a profit of $683.89 after all expenses, including the feeder calf value. The entire set of Patent steers had an average of $492.56 profit per head compared to the entire Futurity average of $216.61. All of the Patent steers gained a yield grade premium and all graded choice or better. They had an average ribeye area of 14.13 square inches, compared to the pen average of 12.5. Their hot carcass pay weight was 918 pounds compared to the pen average of 754 pounds.

Polled Shorthorn and Durham Red Cattle Waukaru Farms, Inc. is a diversified family farming operation that began using registered Shorthorn bulls in 1902. From the early 1900’s through the 1940’s all three British beef breeds, Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn, grazed the sandhills and marsh ground of what at the time was named Waukarusa Ranch. Later Barry’s grandfather, Walter Jordan, determined that the Shorthorn cattle had distinct advantages: they were simpler to manage, more adaptable to various feed and fodder resources, and they lasted longer. Through selection and culling, Walter designed the nucleus of Waukaru that could thrive in various environments, required little management, and could convert grass and crop residue to meat and milk. As the years went by and new technologies emerged, we embraced these emerging tools as a way to make smarter and simpler decisions. Waukaru began performance testing and collecting carcass data in 1960, and has become a leader in the Shorthorn breed in data submission. The 1970’s brought the beef industry wide use of artificial insemination and then nonsurgical embryo transfer. Waukaru was quick to employ these two great tools to help accomplish our goals. In 2003, planned matings between Waukaru’s elite donor females and the Red Angus breed’s most proven bulls laid the foundation of the Durham Red composite. Currently, Waukaru genetics can be found in forty-two of the fifty states, and eleven countries from six continents.

Ready to Flush. Selling the rights to one (1) successful embryo transplant flush; guarantee of six transferable embryos. Waukaru will pay flush expenses and include access to semen from any bull in our herd bull battery. Polled. Selection criteria for a donor cow vary from one operation to another. Since Waukaru employs a broad spectrum breeding approach, we use an all encompassing set of criteria to select donor females. We require donors that have the capabilities to produce a breed leading herd sire and to produce daughters that can do the same. Red Nan 0102x is that type of female. She ranks in the top 20% for CE and BEPD while being in the top 3% for YEPD and 15% for CEM. I count nine cows in her pedigree that have been flushed, produced multiple herd sires, and have been the big profit generators during their tenure at Waukaru. Her first embryo transplant daughter sells as Lot 64. Be ready for her Patent 8161x son next spring, Norseman 4085x. Ready to flush immediately. TH/PHA Free. 1A. Selling four (4) grade one frozen embryos out of the donor dam Waukaru Red Nan 0102 and sired by Waukaru Patent 8161x.

0.01 PE to Waukaru Orion 2047x from 5/17/14 thru MARB 7/18/14. Examined safe. Horned. This young Gold Mine 2109x female more than earns her keep. Her first son, Waukaru Mission 1088*xDR, was the second high selling Durham red bull in The Gathering 2012. Her 2013 son by Coppertop 464x was selected by Doug Moore of Utah in this past bull sale. Ranking in the top 20% for $CEZ, top 10% for $F and $BMI has allowed Margie 9004 to work with a variety of sires. Her daughter by Coppertop 464x that we have kept is expected to fill the trail blazed by this reliable brood matron.

This maternal sister to Gold Card 5042x has posted production stats that are difficult to mirror. Her natural progeny have combined ratios of 102 for Birth, 114 for Weaning, and 107 for Yearling. Through her tour through the donor pen, we have been able to keep three young daughters that will be important contributors in future years. Red Nan 8141 is the dam of the high selling Durham Red bull from The Gathering 2011 who is the herd sire for Randy Brown of Idaho, as well as the $5,000 herd sire selection of Turkey Ridge Shorthorns and Deckert Stock Farm of South Dakota from The Gathering 2012. Lassie 3073x has been the topic of many discussions here since she was born. Lassie 3073x is a future donor, a female the industry needs to replicate many times. Her production indices are flawless, being over 100 for all five production measurements: 100 for Birth, 112 for Weaning, 109 Yearling, 121 for REA, and 124 for %IMF. The only other female that has come close to those measurements was her 2012 full sister that we will begin flushing next spring. The EPD profile of Lassie 3073x is picture perfect, allowing her endless mating possibilities.

Very soon we knew that he would be elite among the 2012 bull crop. Orion 2047x weighed 742 pounds for his adj. 205 day, and then continued to gain 3.99 pounds until his 365 day weight when he weighed 1348 pounds. In the yards at the National Western, the ASA staff measured Orion 2047x to be a 6.0 frame, and his scrotal measurement adjusted to 38.7 for a year of age. When he was scanned, his ribeye area was 17.8 square inches for a ratio of 110 and he had a %IMF of 3.63 for a ratio of 107. Waukaru Patent 8161 Sire of Lot 67.

Polled. When we decided to offer the very best of the heifer calves, I knew I would have to write a footnote for Red Nan 4033*x. This is the three-quarter sister to Waukaru Orion 2047x, the high selling bull from The Gathering 2013. Red Nan 4033*x has the making of a breed leading brood matron. Her dam is sired by the Australian import, Bundaleer United Chief U21x. She posted individual stats of 104 for Birth; 103 Weaning; 103 Yearling; 123 %IMF and had an 11.5 square inch ribeye. Red Nan 4033*x was born unassisted to her 22-month-old dam and has not missed a beat from day one.

Glossary & Use of Shorthorn EPDs and Dollar Value Traits Calving Ease Direct (CE, DIR) The most important EPD in sire selection for use on heifers is Calving Ease Direct. As the name implies, this measure predicts the ability of a sire to produce calves that come out easily, without assistance. Expressed as a percent of unassisted births, the more positive numbers are the more desirable. For example, a bull with a CE of -2.5 is expected to sire 4.0% more assisted births than a bull with a CE, DIR of +1.5 (1.5 plus -2.5 = 4.0). Put simply, if the bull with a +1.5 CE, DIR EPD sires 100 calves and 1 birth requires assistance, then the example bull should sire 5 calves that need assistance at birth. Calving Ease Maternal (MCE, DTRS) If you plan to retain daughters from a particular bull, then Calving Ease Maternal EPD becomes more of a priority. This measure often has an inverse relationship to Calving Ease Direct. Cattle breeding logic tells us that when calves come easier, the natural pelvic area of the females may also get smaller. As a result, daughters from a sire known for Calving Ease may be less desirable due to this antagonism. Maternal Calving Ease is basically one generation further than Calving Ease Direct. Expressed as a percent of unassisted births, CEM reflects a bull’s ability to sire daughters that calve unassisted. As a result, a more positive number is more desirable. Although CE, DIR and CEM, DTRS values tend to be antagonistic, a bull that is positive for both CE and CEM should be given strong consideration if one wants to market bulls suitable for use on first-calf heifers and sell or retain replacement females that can calve on their own. Birth Weight (BW) This trait needs little introduction, but the emphasis on Birth Weight can be overdone. At the most basic level, Birth Weight is nothing more than an indicator trait for calving ease. For decades, the weight of a calf at birth was the only hard number collected by breeders to tell bull buyers what they could expect at calving time. Economically, over-selecting for low birth weights can take us in the wrong direction; cattle still sell by the pound. The most important figure is the number of live calves that hit the ground with no assistance from a ranch hand. Still, threshold values for BW are on the minds of many bull and female buyers. In the Shorthorn breed, bulls suitable for use on heifers need to be significantly less than breed average. Use BW EPD in conjunction with Calving Ease Direct (CE). Phenotypic traits like length of body, shoulder design, head shape, circumference of bone, and even frame score play a significant role in determining birth weight and calving ease. Weaning Weight (WW) Put simply, weaning weight is the ability of a bull’s calf to dry off, stagger to its feet, and grow like mad. By itself, Weaning Weight EPD has limited use, merely pounds of calves attributed to the sire or dam of interest. However, when used in conjunction with other traits (CEM, BW, YW, & Carcass), WW gets much more significant. Within the 2011 sire summary, the top 5% of the Shorthorn breed should wean calves approximately 24.7 lbs. heavier on average than the bottom 5% of the breed. More importantly, bulls within the sire summary that may have identical WW EPDs can be drastically different for traits like CE and Carcass Marbling. As a result, finding a sire with a strong WW that also excels in other economically relevant traits important to your breeding program is a key element to success. Milk The dairy industry measures the success of a cow in pounds of milk produced and the nutritional attributes or fat content of the milk. Research has shown that the nutritional quality of milk offered by a beef cow is just as important as the amount produced in generating heavier calves. Since beef cattle breeders don’t milk our cows, success is measured in pounds of calf attributed to milk at weaning. A bull’s Milk EPD is determined by his daughter’s ability to wean heavier calves than her contemporaries. Just because a cow weans the heaviest calf every year, does not necessarily mean her Milk EPD should be the highest in the herd. The performance of her calf could be attributed to the dam’s or sire’s growth genetics or a number of other environmental factors eliminated in the EPD calculation (age of dam, birth date, etc.). Shorthorn breed average Milk EPD (sires) is +2.1. In environments with severely limited feed resources, Milk EPD can be too high, having a negative impact on rebreeding rate. However, in most cases, keep moving Milk EPD in a positive direction. Total Maternal (TMat, TOTM) Mathematically, Total Maternal EPD is nothing more than ½ of WW plus Milk EPD. For example, the 2011 Sire Summary has breed average (sires) WW at +13.8 and Milk at +2.1. If you take ½ of 13.8 (6.9) and add 2.1, you land at breed average (sires) TMat (TOTM) of +9.0. This trait simplifies the process of selecting a bull to produce replacement females by using one number that expresses a cow’s ability to bring in a heavier calf. Yearling Weight (YW) Yearling Weight EPD has long been the “end all” measure of performance. However, single-trait selection for YW can lead to far more serious problems, especially at they relate to bottom-line profit. Mature size or frame score must be monitored when selecting a bull for performance via YW EPD. Cow maintenance costs, calving difficulty, and even breeding problems can result. In other words, a mature bull that weighs 2,700 pounds cannot naturally breed an 800-pound yearling heifer. As you select bulls that exceed breed average YW of +24.8, be careful of CE, BW, and WW. You may talk yourself into a very labor intensive calving season and more expensive feed bill. $ CEZ ($ Calving Ease) This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. This index is also a good measure of Shorthorn females’ ability to produce calving ease sires. Overemphasis of $CEZ may cause unwanted depression of weaning and yearling performance. $F ($ Feedlot) Similar to a Terminal Sire scenario, $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F. Over-selection may cause detrimental harm to longevity, reproductive efficiency, and fleshing ability. $BMI ($ British Maternal Index) As the name implies, this multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity. Active Dams Active Sires
