As I welcome everyone to the sale, I thought I would also recognize my grandfather George Winkle and father Gerald Winkle for influencing me from my childhood to raise Shorthorn cattle. As you can tell from the Registration paper attached, my grandfather started in the Shorthorn business when he rented the Bare estate farm 100 years ago and the cattle on that farm was transferred to Bar and Winkle. My father was an infant then but stayed on the farm throughout his life. This was also where I was raised and still remember the type of cows my father raised that I have tried to replicate. As I went thru school at Ohio State I came home and told him that he needed to cull all the cows at the age of 10 he scoffed at me and said, “A cow just starts having the good ones then”. I still remember him telling his story of his favorite cow that I showed my first calves out of at the Ohio State Fair. “ Well her 18th,19th and 20th calves all won their class at the State Fair”. While I’m not in total agreement with 20-year-old cows I do think that living in the Depression era, making it on a 250-acre farm on 50/50 shares, sending 3 kids thru Ohio State without debt, and ending up buying that farm in 1995 I have to say that Shorthorns and their longevity have a lot to do with it. For your info that farm still has Shorthorn based cattle on it today.Ibelieve it is also interesting that Proud Fool 1207 is going to celebrate her 10th birthday this December and as her progeny are major part of my sale offering we will see if my dad is right and her best is yet to come.Thanks for coming!
