Send DNA Directly to Neogen Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing. 3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal 2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number 3. A barcode number for each animal tested Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

Busting into the Fall Season: Unprecedented Markets and Shorthorn Momentum
A
s we bust into the fall season, it hardly seems possible we are already looking at September. We’ve witnessed erratic weather across the U.S. this year, from extreme flooding to severe droughts. These weather patterns affect our industry more than most, directly impacting our cattle and the crop industry that provides our feed. In some areas, cows are going to slaughter simply because of drought. While overall live animal numbers on feed are down, the industry has compensated by increasing harvest weights to unbelievable levels. Looking back over the past five to twenty years, the days of the finished steer weighing 1,250 to 1,350 pounds are over. Today, packers are reaching for cattle weighing a minimum of 1,500 pounds, and they are routinely looking for 1,600- to 1,700-pound fat steers. Packers have had to drastically increase these weights to generate enough product for consumers due to the lack of numbers on feed and fewer cows being bred. A paradigm shift in cattle value, makes the breed more valuable. Despite higher input costs, our industry’s future looks incredibly strong. Prices at the stockyards—especially for commercial bred heifers and cow-calf pairs—are historic. Most of us never thought we would see commercial cattle bringing these prices. Not long ago, purebred breeders thought they’d cut a fat hog if their sale averages matched what a commercial bred heifer brings today. The bar has been raised significantly, and the purebred industry must align with what our product is actually worth. With the documentation and genomic data available, the value of a registered Shorthorn continues to grow because we can make far better predictions than 12
possible with commercial cattle. Bull sales show the same results. Savvy cattlemen are culling old bulls and getting as much for them at the stockyards as they originally paid years ago. Yes, a new bull costs more, but it remains a great buy when you factor in today’s genomic value. Sophisticated buyers have more tools at their fingertips to avoid past mistakes, ensuring a much better product for beef consumption. Quality Brings a Premium Whether buying or selling beef, high quality is worth more. There is more Prime beef sold today than ever, and the exact same is true in the registered Shorthorn business. As you reach harvest time for your calf crop this fall, recognize that value. Retain the good ones and discard the rest. Crucially, do not sell your discarded cattle to another breeder as registered stock; doing so does the breed an injustice. We shouldn’t sell registered cattle to someone unless they are animals we would purchase ourselves. That rule builds your operation’s reputation and makes the breed more valuable. A Busy Fall Schedule We are heading into a busy fall season. The Association is preparing for upcoming shows, and Shorthorn Country is producing sale catalogs so we can reap the benefits of past decisions. Our calendar is so packed that it’s hard to keep Regional and Super Regional shows off the same dates, with events occasionally occurring simultaneously in different states. Fortunately, we still see excellent participation across the board, proving the popularity of our breed and the enthusiasm of Shorthorn breeders. Join Us in Kansas City: October 23-24 Join us for our Annual Meeting in Kansas City at the Embassy Suites

(Airport), hosted in conjunction with the American Royal. On Friday, October 23rd, we start the morning off with our Shorthorn Open Show, followed by an evening Open House at the Association office. The morning of Saturday, October 24th, we kick off the 2026 Annual Meeting in the morning, followed by an afternoon Awards Luncheon. Find the full detailed schedule for both events on page 24. Event registration for the annual meeting and awards luncheon is available online at the ASA website. Room reservations and registration must be completed by the October 2 deadline. Registration fees will increase after that date. As we close in on our August 31 year-end, the breed has been growing thanks to our strong senior and junior associations. In many ways, 2026 has flown by faster than ever, but it has been a fantastic year driven by the energy and passion of our Shorthorn family. We hope to see you this October and enjoy being part of the Family-Friendly Breed!

Voting Delegate Information How are we already planning for fall events? It seems like summer just started, but we are excited to celebrate another Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 24, 2026. We will kick off the weekend with a social at the ASA Office on the evening of Friday, October 23. We invite everyone who can attend to join us as we get together and celebrate another year with the American Shorthorn Association. The Annual Meeting will once again be held in conjunction with the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri.

Many of you have received your ballot for the election of Delegates this year by email. Ballots are being distributed electronically to make the voting process more convenient and to help address ongoing postal delivery issues. We have also seen an increase in members not receiving physical mail from our office. Sending ballots electronically allows us to get these important documents to you faster and receive them back in the office sooner. Delegate ballots were due back to the ASA office by September 8, 2026.

Once all delegate ballots have been received and tallied, a letter and email will be sent to those individuals elected to represent their state at the Annual Meeting. Please watch your email and mailbox for this information. A list of the elected delegates will also be published in the October issue of Shorthorn Country. We look forward to seeing everyone in Kansas City this fall and celebrating another great year for the American Shorthorn Association!

ALL THINGS North American International Livestock Exposition It’s time to start preparing for another North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE)! If you are planning to exhibit in Louisville this November, be sure to check, double-check, and triple-check all of your information before entries are submitted. NAILE is going to look and feel a little different this year. The Kentucky Exposition Center is currently undergoing construction as part of a major expansion project designed to improve and increase facility space. With those improvements comes change, and we will do our best to keep exhibitors informed throughout the process. One of the most important things you can do is provide a valid email address when entering. Email will be our primary method of communication for updates, schedules, and exhibitor information. New for 2026: Daily Release Policy Daily release of cattle will be permitted only after all shows scheduled for that day have concluded. No cattle, displays, equipment, or exhibit materials may be removed, and no tear-down activities may begin until all shows in both Broadbent Arena and Freedom Hall have been completed. Any requests for an early release must be submitted through the Early/Late Release Request Form available on the NAILE website no later than November 1, 2026. Exhibitor Reminders • Chceck Your Tattoos! All junior cattle must be tattoo verified before check-in. Please inspect tattoos before leaving for Louisville to avoid delays. Information regarding the tattoo verification process is available through NAILE exhibitor materials.
•Junior Ownership Requirements. All junior cattle must meet the ownership deadline of October 13, 2026. Please review registration certificates carefully and make sure ownership information is correct. If changes are needed, contact the ASA office as soon as possible. • Junior Ownership Names. Junior cattle must be registered in a single junior exhibitor’s name. Farm names, partnerships, and multiple ownerships are not permitted for junior entries. If corrections are needed, contact the ASA office immediately. *These Junior rules are strictly enforced by NAILE Staff. The ASA wants to avoid any problems at check in by having everything correct on our end and your end* • Tack Space Information. Tack space is not specifically allocated during the stalling process. Exhibitors are encouraged to keep this in mind when entering cattle. Historically, NAILE reduces the number of stalls allocated to each breed by approximately 30%. As an example, an exhibitor entering 10 head may receive approximately 7 stalls. This is only an example, and final stall assignments cannot be determined until entries have closed and stall allocations have been finalized. • Registration Papers. Physical registration certificates are not required but are strongly encouraged. The ASA accepts either printed certificates or digital PDF copies. If using digital papers, exhibitors must have the actual PDF certificate downloaded and available. Simply displaying the animal’s information within DigitalBeef is not considered an acceptable registration certificate. During check-in, ASA staff will tattoo
2026 Schedule & Deadlines October 6 - Early Entry Deadline October 13 - Late Entry Deadline and Junior Ownership Deadline November 1 - Stalling Requests Due November 13 - Check in - 9 a.m.- 12p.m. - ALL Junior Cattle and Open Check in - 10 a.m. - Arrival of Junior Cattle Ends - 12 p.m. - Arrival of Open Cattle Ends November 14 - Junior ShorthornPlus Show - Following the Junior Simmental Show starting at 8 a.m. - Deck the Stalls November 15 - Junior Purebred Show November 17 - Open Shorthorn Show 18

verify and stamp registration certificates for junior cattle. This is one reason physical copies are highly recommended. If you are missing registration papers, please contact the ASA office before the show. • Cow/Calf Pairs. The calf at side must be registered. If you are bringing a cow/calf pair both animals registration papers must be presented at check in. • Stalling Requests. We will do our best to accommodate all stalling requests. However, due to ongoing construction and facility changes, we cannot guarantee where Shorthorn cattle will be located within the barns. Final barn assignments may not be available until the week of the show. If you have cattle from another breed that need to be stalled with the Shorthorn group, please let us know as early as possible so we can work with NAILE staff to request additional space. The more detailed your request, the easier it is for us to accommodate. Helpful Stalling Request Example: • Dolly Parton - 3 Shorthorn both shows, 1 Junior Shorthorn only show, 1 Angus in both show = 5 total • George Strait - 2 Herefords both shows, sharing tack and in our stalls. • Reba - 3 Shorthorns both shows, stalls next to or near us. • Garth Brooks - 1 Shorthorn both shows, stalls next to or near us. Detailed requests help us create the best possible stalling layout for everyone involved. SEND ALL STALL REQUEST TO wade@shorthorn.org, by Nov. 1. We look forward to another great year of “Shorthorns in the Ville” and can’t wait to see everyone in Louisville this November!

Full Speed for Fall Shows! Fall show season has a way of sneaking up on us. One minute, we are preparing for the Junior National and state fairs, and the next, registrations need to be completed and entries are due for fall. Just like that, it is time to press the accelerator and start making plans for fall! This year, there is even more to look forward to as we kick off a new show season, including a new home for one of our longest-standing National Shows. Our first National Shows of the show season are both in October: the Keystone International Livestock Exposition (KILE) and the American Royal. The regular entry period for KILE ended in August; however, late entries remain open through September 17. Wade and I will both be in attendance and look forward to seeing our exhibitors and breeders as we kick off our National Shows. Rounding out the October shows is the American Royal. The 127th American Royal begins a new era for this show, hosting its first show at the new American Royal complex in Kansas City, Kansas. Entries remain open through September 10; late entries will close September 15. The Royal is using a new
show entry system this year, so take time to familiarize yourself with The Showman App to help streamline your entry process. The Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon will be held in conjunction with the American Royal once again this year on Saturday, October 24. During the Awards Luncheon, we will recognize award recipients, including the 2025-2026 Show Award winners. Find information on attending on page 24. American Royal Stalling: Please send stalling requests for the American Royal to cassie@shorthorn.org prior to September 15. For this show, breed staff coordinate all requests so that we can stall all entries. Knowing these requests in a timely manner allows us the best opportunity to serve you. Entries are projected to increase with the transition to the new facility, which means we may not have the extra space per head we have had in the past. Because of this, please be thoughtful with your entries so that you allow yourself the desired tack and stall space. It is recommended to enter extra space to ensure you have the room you need in your stall. As we shift into drive for fall, there
are important reminders to keep in mind for a successful show season: • Register and transfer cattle prior to the entry deadline. For various reasons, registrations may take a few tries. Starting this process early allows you the time needed to have your “ducks in a row”. • If you plan to participate in the E.D.G.E. Show at Cattlemen’s Congress or National Western, those animals must have: o Birth weight and weaning weight recorded in DigitalBeef. o A 100K genomic testing sample submitted and received at the lab by November 1. Whether you are a first-year exhibitor with your learner’s permit or a longtime exhibitor with plenty of miles behind the wheel, preparation is key to a successful show season. While fall show season can feel like full speed ahead, don’t forget that occasionally, it’s good to shift into a lower gear and enjoy the sights along the way. As always, if you have any questions regarding upcoming shows, reach out to Wade or Cassie!

Beef Blurb
Shelby director of youth activities, Diehm director of marketing & communications
Networking Under the Arch Earlier this summer, I attended the Agricultural Media Summit in St. Louis, Missouri. As the largest gathering of agricultural media professionals in the country, AMS continues to be one of the highlights of my year. It provides an opportunity to learn from industry leaders, connect with colleagues from across agriculture and return home with fresh ideas to implement throughout the year. My week began with the Livestock Publications Council (LPC) Board meeting where we discussed organizational business and future initiatives while reconnecting with fellow board members from across the country. That evening, the annual Welcome Party provided the perfect opportunity to catch up with longtime friends and meet new faces before the educational sessions officially began. Monday morning kicked off with an energetic keynote presentation by Aaron Putze. His message, centered around leading with heart, reminded attendees that while technology continues to evolve, authentic relationships, empathy and positive leadership remain some of our greatest strengths as communicators. His presentation set the tone for the entire conference. I also attended Aaron’s breakout session, “The Future of Leadership: Empathy, Agility, and Impact,” which explored practical ways to build stronger teams by focusing on trust, prioritization and creating a culture that delivers meaningful results instead of simply staying busy. It was a great reminder that effective leadership is built through intentional actions and people-first thinking. The next session I attended, “AI for Ag Work: Augment Your Writing, Editing and Research,” focused on practical ways artificial intelligence can support agricultural communicators without replacing the creativity and critical 22
thinking that make our work valuable. The workshop shared useful prompting techniques, workflow ideas and strategies for using AI as a tool to improve efficiency while allowing communicators to spend more time on storytelling and strategy. Later that afternoon, I participated in “Intermediate Canva: Media Mastery,” where attendees learned advanced Canva features including Magic Switch resizing, AI-powered tools, collaborative whiteboards and video editing techniques. As someone who regularly creates promotional materials for ASA and the National Junior Shorthorn Show, I left with several new ideas to make future projects more efficient and engaging. Monday evening was another highlight of the conference. Before everyone gathered for the annual Monday Night Mingle, I once again had the opportunity to present the LPC Awards. Recognizing excellence in agricultural communications across photography, writing, design, public relations, websites and other categories is always one of my favorite responsibilities as a member of the Awards Committee. It is rewarding to celebrate the outstanding work being produced throughout our industry. The American Shorthorn Association won best association website this year for our new website! Tuesday morning included another full slate of educational sessions. I attended “Beyond Trends: How John Deere Uses TikTok to Build Relevance, Reach, and Trust,” which provided an inside look at how one of agriculture’s most recognizable brands strategically uses social media to tell authentic stories while maintaining its brand identity. The session reinforced the importance of meeting audiences where they are while remaining true to an organization’s voice. Next, I attended “Deep Dive Into Photoshop Efficiency” with Khara Plicanic. Having enjoyed her design
shorthorn country • september 2026
sessions in previous years, this workshop once again delivered practical tips for improving workflows and making Photoshop more efficient for everyday design projects. Many of the techniques shared can be immediately applied to the marketing and communication materials I create throughout the year. My final breakout session was “Sketch Your Thinking,” an interactive workshop that encouraged participants to use simple sketches and visual thinking to organize ideas, storyboard campaigns and develop communication strategies. It was a refreshing reminder that creativity doesn’t always begin on a computer screen and that visual planning can unlock new approaches to problemsolving and marketing. Each year I attend AMS, I leave with new ideas, stronger professional relationships and renewed excitement for the work we do in agricultural communications. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving on the LPC Board and to learn alongside so many talented professionals. I already look forward to seeing everyone again next year as AMS heads to Omaha, Nebraska.

Christina National Shorthorn Lassie Wenderski Queen Coordinator
Answer the Call: Become the Next National Shorthorn Lassie Queen For generations, young women have played an important role in shaping the future of the Shorthorn breed. The National Shorthorn Lassie Queen program offers a unique opportunity for passionate, dedicated young ladies to serve as ambassadors, leaders, and advocates for the breed they love. If you have ever considered applying, there has never been a better time to take that next step. Serving as National Shorthorn Lassie Queen is about far more than wearing a crown. It is an opportunity to represent the American Shorthorn Association and the National Shorthorn Lassies at state, regional, and national events while promoting the Shorthorn breed to fellow cattle enthusiasts and the public. Throughout her reign, the Queen serves as a role model for junior members and a spokesperson for one of the beef industry’s most respected breeds. The experiences gained through this program are invaluable. From public speaking and networking to leadership development and personal growth,
the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen position helps young women build skills that will benefit them far beyond the show ring. The confidence, professionalism, and friendships developed during a year of service often become some of the most rewarding and memorable experiences of their youth careers. The program also provides an opportunity to give back to an industry that invests so much in its young people. As Queen, you will have the chance to encourage younger members, share your passion for the Shorthorn breed, and help preserve the traditions and values that make the Shorthorn community so special. Many former queens would agree that their reign was one of the most impactful experiences of their lives. The connections made, lessons learned, and opportunities presented continue to influence them long after their year of service concludes. Whether your future includes agriculture, business, education, or another profession, the leadership skills gained through this role will serve
you well. The National Shorthorn Lassie Queen program is seeking motivated young women who are enthusiastic about the cattle industry, committed to serving others, and eager to represent the Shorthorn breed with pride. If that describes you, don’t hesitate to apply. Applications Due October 1 The deadline to apply for the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen position is October 1. Eligible young ladies are encouraged to submit their applications and pursue an opportunity that could shape their future while promoting the breed they love. Take the challenge. Embrace the experience. Lead with pride. The next National Shorthorn Lassie Queen could be you. For eligibility requirements and application information, contact the National Shorthorn Lassies via social media, Christina Wenderski, or Brianna Duerre.

Closing the Summer Chapter As we begin closing another amazing chapter of summer, I can’t help but reflect on all we’ve accomplished over the past few months. It’s been a season filled with unforgettable memories, new friendships, and exciting opportunities for the American Junior Shorthorn Association. Our summer kicked off in Abilene, Texas, for the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference. Trailblazing to Texas was an incredible week filled with competition, learning, and memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s event such a success! From there, the junior board traveled to Weatherford, Texas, for our annual summer retreat. We had the opportunity
to strengthen our team, visit R.A. Brown Ranch, and learn from Mr. Tucker Brown about the importance of playing the long game in both business and life. We also held our summer board meeting, where we reflected on Junior Nationals, discussed new ideas, and planned for the exciting year ahead. As I begin my year serving as AJSA President, I’m honored to work alongside such a dedicated board and can’t wait to see what we accomplish together. We’re already looking forward to seeing everyone in Madison, Wisconsin, for the 2027 National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference as we become Shorthorn Superheroes! Until then, enjoy the start of fall, and we’ll see you throughout this upcoming show season!
