New DNA Card Fees

Our approved lab for DNA, Neogen, has increased the cost of blood and hair cards to the ASA and as a result, it is necessary to start charging for them to cover this increase, plus the postage it takes to send them.

Blood cards are now $1/card and hair cards are $2/card. Methods for obtaining them have not changed. Please call the office or fill out the card request on shorthorn.org to order. The lab’s preferred methods are TSU samples and blood cards. TSU kits can be purchased directly through Neogen or Allflex.

*Remember, there is an additional fee for testing hair and semen.

**DO NOT test twins via blood samples.

New Rule - Jan. 1, 2022

The Board of Directors unanimously approved a new rule, which begins January 1, 2022: “All bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) born January 1, 2022 and after will be required to have a genomic profile and parentage markers on file in order to register any progeny with the American Shorthorn Association”.

This means that regardless of service type, all bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) used for breeding need to be genomically tested (currently, this is the 100K test but could be subject to change according to Neogen standards in the future). This pertains to AI sires as well as pasture sires/clean up bulls. The rule only affects bulls born after Jan 1, 2022, so this rule won’t really come into play until their progeny are born, late 2023 or 2024. Please be aware that AI sires still require the 3 genetic conditions as well – TH, PHA, and DS.

Don’t miss out on utilizing the new DNA feature within Digital Beef, which allows you to easily select your animals for testing, and all their data is auto-filled in. From there, you just pick which tests you want done, print the form, and send it in with your samples. No more messy or crowded hand-writing necessary! For video and PDF walk-through of how to do this, go

Association Outlook

Adjusting to Fall

Herewe are in October already. Sale season is in full swing as the demand for Shorthorn genetics continues to be strong. Lots of activities are happening in the breed right now, before the holidays.

The National Shorthorn shows kick off in October with Keystone International in Pennsylvania and the American Royal in Kansas City. One of our more significant events is the Jack C. Ragsdale Super National Shorthorn Show in November at the North American in Louisville. This event is one of the best-attended Shorthorn events of the year for both the people and the number of cattle exhibited. We will close out the 150th Celebration of the ASA during this event. A special presentation of the CJ Brown Painting Proof will be presented to display in the North American halls perpetually. We will also recognize the Brown Family of Kentucky for their influence in the breed through the Sutherland and Ashbourne Herds located on the outskirts of Louisville.

The Deck, the Stalls SYDF Junior Fundraiser, will take place in the barn on Saturday afternoon and will include some new donations of semen and embryos. This is an important campaign benefiting the National Shorthorn Junior Show and Youth Conference. Saturday evening, there will be a social celebrating the 150th year of the American Shorthorn Association at the Crown Plaza. During this social, we hope to have as many past Builders of the Breed, ASA Board Presidents and Board Members as possible attend. This will be a great time to renew old

friendships and create new ones. The fellowship of this breed runs deep in family traditions and this will be a great evening to share those relationships. I do hope we have a large crowd and many of our past leaders who have helped make this breed great. Take time out of your schedule and plan on attending this year’s show and activities.

Following the Show in Louisville will be the ASA Annual Meeting Forum and Awards Banquet in Kansas City on November 19th at the Hilton Kansas City Airport Hotel. The final review and closing of the 150th Celebration will be during the annual meeting. There will be an educational Forum on Saturday morning that will include presentations on the strategic planning session by your Board of Directors and Staff. Other presentations about genomics and important industry information will be included, followed by the Annual Meeting Saturday afternoon. The ASA Board of Directors election takes place during this time. Then on Saturday evening the awards banquet will round out the day’s activities. At the Awards Banquet, the announcement of this year’s Builder of the Breed awards will be presented along with the Heritage Award and the Merit Award. The show awards will be announced and presented, including the National Show Bull and Female of the Year. The Annual Meeting and Forum and Awards Banquet have become a time for many Shorthorn folks to gather and share their friendship and knowledge. This is a time for good ole fashion Shorthorn Family fellowship. Make plans to attend and enjoy all the

festivities. Go to the website to register and make hotel reservations. Look on page 33 for more information.

As we start to wind down 2022 and look forward to the holiday season, it has been a great year for Shorthorns, with numerous firsts and recognition by the beef cattle industry. Last January at Cattlemen’s Congress, the Shorthorn Summit Sale was one of the best, with a high-selling bull bringing $123,000 and the kick-off of the initial fundraising auction for the Shorthorn Youth Development Foundation. Over $30,000 was raised by SYDF for sponsoring the Junior National and junior activities.

The Shorthorn Pen Show at Cattleman’s Congress was the talk of the show and the largest pen show of the entire event. Following this, breeder Shorthorn bull sales came on stronger than ever with a record-breaking number of bulls sold with record-breaking averages for the number sold. The Junior National was larger and better than ever in Kansas City, with over 450 exhibitors and over 700 head exhibited. The breed started the fall sale season with a tremendous recordbreaking production sale over Labor Day weekend, and another inaugural auction was extremely successful that same weekend.

The demand for good Shorthorn cattle has continued throughout the fall as the breed prospers. The challenge is having enough good Shorthorns that can contribute to the betterment of the beef cattle industry. If they are good enough, folks will find them, and those that have them will be rewarded!

Unexpected

When I look back on past fall articles looking for some inspiration, I notice that this is the time of year where topics always seem to be a struggle! I find past articles focused on horse racing, baseball, the pictures on my office wall, and even my dog in past September and October pieces. So it should come as no surprise that for October 2022, finding a good topic hasn’t been easy.

Last year, I introduced you to Gus, our Corgi who likes to play fetch or lay under the desk while I work in the office. Gus still enjoys both those things, but he doesn’t bring us the toy duck near as often for a game of fetch as he used to. You see, big brother life has been harder on Gus than he ever could have imagined! Gus had been his mother’s “only child” for the first 3.5 years of his life. When we brought Lane home on the last day of January, Erika and I knew that our worlds were changed forever. But we never thought about the dog and how a little one would change his lifestyle. In the early days, Gus was obsessed with the tiny human in his house. He followed us everywhere we went with the baby, got up with us at night every time, and laid on watch when it was nap time (although it usually became nap time for both). When Lane gained mobility, the rules of the game changed. Gus became the hunted, and it was a constant game of Lane trying to get to

the pup. There’s only so much that a dog can take before he becomes annoyed and tries to avoid the baby. Eventually, they have developed a mutual understanding and coexistence. Lane is more interested in clearing off the TV stand now, and Gus doesn’t feel the need to hide under the kitchen table from Lane quite as often. Fetch has become a game that we only play after Lane goes to bed, and we still have to take toys away from both of them that belong to the other.

Beef Business =

Through all this rambling about my son and my dog, there is a lesson to be applied to our lives as cattle producers: the lesson of unintended consequences. We have all made decisions in our operations that we didn’t realize at the time would have such big impacts on us down the road. Switching to a cheaper feed or mineral might have helped with expenses for the year, but the poorer AI conceptions and open cows were an unexpected consequence. The same can be said for other breeding, management, and marketing decisions. While we can’t always prepare for every possible outcome, it’s vital to think about what could happen with the decisions you make. It’s like a “measure twice, cut once” thought process for decision making. Not all unexpected results from your decisions are necessarily negative. The herd bull you bought to produce replacement females with might turn out

to sire marketable bulls at a higher rate than you expected. Your pasture rotation system might yield more grazing days than you were hoping for. Not every decision is going to lead to something unexpected biting you in the rear. Take these little victories and enjoy them as they come!

While the negatives of our baby-dog relationship certainly weren’t thought about before we brought Lane home, neither were the fun moments we get to experience because of the two of them. Watching our little boy’s face light up while he pets his dog is a great joy for both Erika and me. Gus is realizing that Lane is a food-dropping machine at this age. When he learned that snacks rain down from above when Lane is in the highchair, he became a big fan of the baby again!

With so many big events coming up this fall, I am sure that later columns will carry a little more substance than this month. An occasional “fluff piece” in a slower time of year is just one of the unexpected consequences of an early magazine deadline!

In the Know

The ASA staff is looking forward to seeing everyone this fall as we start heading to the events and shows scheduled. The American Royal will be here before we know it and ask that if you have a stalling request, please send those to us by October 7th. We will try our best to accommodate stalling requests and appreciate you for working with us.

The minute we wrap up the American Royal it feels we turn around and leave for the North American International Livestock Exposition. If you have any stalling requests for NAILE, please send those in by November 1st. NAILE stalling is always a bit tight, and we advise you to enter more head than you plan

to bring to allow room for tack space. In previous years, NAILE reduces our stall space by 30%. Therefore, you will receive 30% less than what you entered. For example: If you enter 10 animals, you will receive 7 stall spaces. This is just an example, and we cannot confirm stalling until entries have closed.

Stalling requests can be sent to Cassie or Wade via email or by calling the office. When entering for these National Shows, typically there is a place for stalling requests, but please remember we don’t always get that information passed along to us, so please contact the ASA directly for those requests.

Fall Spent in the Ring =

Just a reminder before you hit the road to these fall shows, check those

registration papers and tattoos for accuracy. NAILE does require junior cattle to be tattoo verified and will be completed during the check in process.

Should you enter one of these shows and cannot make it, we ask that you please let us know so we can use the stalling space accordingly. This communication helps your fellow exhibitors so we can reallocate space to others.

We are excited for another thrilling fall spent at shows and look forward to seeing past and new breeders and exhibitors. As you prepare for these shows and find yourself with questions, Cassie and Wade are always happy to assist and help.

Check the Facts

You asked, we delivered! Curious how your animal is doing within the show system? Now you can track your show points!

Exhibitors and breeders now have

access to view current show standings by navigating to the “Show Points” page on DigitalBeef.

You will see this option on the lefthand side menu. Show results will be

added as the ASA receives them. Should you have questions about current standings, reach out to Cassie or Wade.

Support

It is officially fall sale and show season. As we begin attending these events, we are already planning the 2023 National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference.

The NJSS is only possibly because of sponsorships and donations so we have many opportunities throughout the year to raise money. It costs approximately $300,000 to host the NJSS and provide the best experience for our junior members.

We have many ways that you can provide support to the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund and NJSS. You can make an annual pledge and become part

Junior Programs =

of the Red, White and Roan Club. You can donate a lot or lots in your sale to become part of the Royal Society Club.

At the North American International Livestock Exposition, we will host the Deck the Stalls Extravaganza auction and raffle. If you would like to provide support at this event you can donate items or buy items. This is one of our largest fundraisers that brings all the membership together. We are looking for all types of donations! If you donate semen or embryos in this sale because you don’t have your own sale, you will still become part of the Royal Society club.

As this year is the end of the 150th Anniversary celebration, we will also have two silent auctions with historical items. The first will be after Deck the Stalls during the 150th reception and the next will be at the Annual Meeting in Kansas City.

If you are interested in making a pledge or donating to any of the above options, please contact me at shelby@ shorthorn.org.

Thank you to all our donors and supporters, the junior programs wouldn’t be possible without your support!

New

The busy fall time is all about new beginnings. Back to school time only means one thing… cattle sales. With schools everywhere starting back up for the year and sales across the country, the excitement can be felt among cattlemen and women. Personally, I look forward to this season all year long. Not only does it mean heading back to college, but I’m also eager to see where the show season will take me. Fall shows and majors bring a sense of excitement to the air that is unmatched.

This time of year doesn’t just mean a new start to the school year or the show season, this is the time for change. A

time to try and make yourself and your operation better. A time to expand your herd’s gene pool or even raise the quality standard. The Shorthorn breed has been on the climb in recent years and the fall sale season is an opportunity for us, the Shorthorn breeders, to use our herds to keep this on the uphill climb.

As the AJSA Vice president and on behalf of the whole board, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone good luck this fall with school, sale season, and the upcoming show season. We cannot wait to see everyone at the upcoming shows!

Herman F. Fischer, 93, passed away September 6, 2022, at Azria Health, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born November 20, 1928, in rural Stafford County to Herman F. and Flora M. (Bunselmeyer) Fischer. He married Norma J. LeRoy on October 17, 1948, at Peace Evangelical and Reformed United Church of Christ, Hudson, Kansas. She survives.

Herman was a current resident of Great Bend, coming from the Seward,

Ronald Linton Olson, World War II veteran, passed away at the age of 97 on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. He had moved from Langdon, ND, to Hayden, Idaho, 2 years previously to live near his son, Scott.

Ron was born to Edwin and Ruth (Payne) Olson on September 21, 1924, on the family farm north of Langdon, ND. He was the sixth of eight children. Ron attended grade school in West Hope Township and graduated from Langdon High School in 1942. He served three years in the Navy during World War II and was stationed on the U. S. S. Orca as a fire control man for anti-aircraft gunners in the South Pacific. He would tell the story of when a Japanese fighter plane came so close to the deck that he saw the pilot as the plane exploded off the side of the ship. His years in the service had a profound impact on his perspective of life.

Upon discharge, he returned home and was united in marriage to Helen Jennings, a high school classmate, on

Kansas, area. He was a long-time farmer and cattleman, raising registered Shorthorn cattle. He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Kansas Shorthorn Association, and Great Bend Masonic Lodge. He served on the Board of Directors of Midwest Energy for 38 years.

Survivors include his wife, Norma, of the home and three children, Rhonda Wineinger and husband Pat of Great Bend, Gregg Fischer of Great Bend and Debra Fischer of Houston, Texas and a sister, Donna Overholt Clausing and husband Larry of Tiffin, Ohio. Also surviving are three granddaughters: Ann Heine (Jeff) of Great Bend, Nikki

November 26, 1947, in Fargo, ND. They established their farmstead across the coulee from where Helen was raised. Ron helped build their home, and Helen landscaped their farmyard. It was there they raised their four children: Ross, Lee, Scott and Ramona. Helen passed away in 2018 after 70 years of marriage.

Ron farmed and enjoyed raising Shorthorn cattle and was active in the Shorthorn Association. Ron was on the Langdon School Board for many years. His Christian faith was very important to him, and he served the Lord in various ministries at Stillwell Community Church, Evangelical United Brethren Church, and Emmanuel Evangelical in Langdon. There he taught the adult Sunday School class. He was active in The Gideons International and served in the state cabinet.

He had an interest in becoming an electrician due to the training he received during the war. He started “Olson Electric” and eventually obtained the level of Master Electrician. Ron and Helen moved to Langdon in 1982 where he worked full-time in that trade. They spent ten winters volunteering their electrical and sewing skills at the Rio Grande Bible Institute near Edinburg,

Deeds (Zach) of Pratt, and Stacey Stump (Jeff) of St. John and seven greatgrandchildren: Kiley, Trae, Branden, Rylee, August, Archer and Clara. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Cheryl Jean Fischer; a daughter-in-law, Leann Fischer; and brother-in-law, Robert Overholt.

Memorials have been designated to First Congregational United Church of Christ or the Shorthorn Foundation which builds Shorthorn opportunities for youth through research and education, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Texas.

Ron was very interested in national and world affairs. His travels during the war had exposed him to a big world. He enjoyed Fox news, NDSU Bison football, and, in later years, taking car rides around Cavalier County. Because of his electrical business, he worked on many houses in Langdon and could recall the landowners of several generations back. Ron had a very sharp mind.

Ron is survived by children: Ross (Barb) Olson of Mesa, AZ, Lee (Nina) Olson of Anchorage, AK, Scott Olson of Hayden, ID, and Ramona Olson of Pine Island, MN; grandchildren: Leif (Erin) Olson, Dustin (Kate) Olson, Haily Olson, Dakota Olson, Burt (Lisa) Merculief, Randall David, Becky (Josh) Watkins, Jennifer Olson and Adam (Crystal) Olson; six great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law Robert (Myrtle) Jennings. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Helen; sisters: Hazel McFarlane, Rhena Lorenz, Effie Bingenheimer, Mildred Olson, and twin brothers: Alden and Arthur, and Marten; daughter-in-law Sherry Olson; and one great-grandson.

What is your must have item at a cattle show?

A speaker and a great playlist, I get in a “fitting” groove wile jamming out!

What is your favorite show product?

It would have to be Revive, it just smells so good!!!

Favorite activity outside of AJSA?

Well I am pretty much spend all my free time working with my calves. The only time I am not in the barn is when I am doing something for my FFA chapter. This year will be my first year on the officer team as the Historian. Between cattle and FFA I don’t have much free time!

What do you want to be when you grow up/future career plans?

I don’t know what I am going to do with my life for sure and I think that’s okay (I hope) but I know that it will involve cattle!! I leaning towards being a large animal veterinarian, but that’s a looooong time in school!
