Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing. 3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal 2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number 3. A barcode number for each animal tested Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

Association Outlook
Montie D. asa executive Soules secretary/CEO
Moving Forward: Innovations, Data, and Expanded Opportunities
A
s the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) continuously evaluates ways to drive our breed forward, our Board of Directors—along with the Junior Board—has been hard at work reviewing policies, performance metrics, and show rules. Our goal is to ensure that the Shorthorn breed remains competitive, user-friendly for our families, and technologically advanced for our commercial cattlemen. We have several exciting updates and new programs rolling out over the next twelve months that will directly benefit our membership. One of the most anticipated updates is the new Sibling Multi-Ownership Rule, recently approved by both the ASA Board and the Junior Board. Starting in March 2027, multiple ownership of an animal will be permitted between eligible sibling junior members. This change is designed to provide families with more flexibility at entry and registration time. When siblings are listed as co-owners, families can decide which child will show the animal when submitting their show entries. However, the rule maintains strict individual exhibitor responsibility: whichever junior member enters the animal for a specific show must be the designated exhibitor for the entirety of that show. You cannot switch siblings out during the event. This rule also extends to the Bred & Owned classifications. The dam can be under sibling multi-ownership, and the resulting offspring will be eligible for the Bred & Owned show, provided the same child exhibits the animal in both the Bred & Owned and Owned shows. Please note, this rule will be first enacted at the 2027 National Junior Shorthorn Show. It will not apply to the current show season, as rules are already printed in our show books and apply to all National shows holding Junior events in conjunction. Performance data is the lifeblood of our Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). The more data we collect, the more accurate our genetic evaluations become. To
12
recognize the breeders who are going above and beyond in their data submission, the ASA is launching a new tiered recognition program. Breeders who turn in complete performance data will be recognized at three distinct levels: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Qualification will be based on the comprehensive submission of birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights, and udder scores, alongside the percentage of the calf crop that has data recorded at the time scoring should be completed. Full details and qualification metrics will be published in upcoming issues of Shorthorn Country. We strongly encourage everyone to review these guidelines, submit your herd data, and help us push the accuracy of Shorthorn EPDs to new heights. As part of our commitment to providing the most accurate selection tools in the beef industry, the ASA is actively working to update the Cow Productivity Index (CPI). We have partnered with Dr. Troy Rowan from the University of Tennessee to lead the rebuilding of this crucial index. This update is necessary for several reasons. First, changes made to the Calving Ease Direct (CED) calculation over the last 12 months resulted in its influence carrying more weight in the index than intended. This needs to be corrected to maintain a balanced index. Second, we are exploring the addition of other critical traits, such as Docility, Mature Cow Weight, and Heifer Pregnancy, as recommended by the Shorthorn Breed Improvement Committee, to further refine the index’s real-world accuracy. Finally, it is important to remember that dollar-value indexes ($ Indexes) are fundamentally tied to the economic value of calves at weaning time. The market conditions and calf prices used to build our original indexes are significantly different from the historic prices cattlemen are experiencing today. To be an effective selection tool, the economic baselines must
shorthorn country • november 2026
reflect modern markets. While this comprehensive update will take some time to build and test properly, you will begin seeing the revised CPI numbers next year. We will announce the full rollout once Dr. Rowan and our team have completed the validation process. In another major board action, the ASA has expanded the number of owners allowed on a registered pedigree from three to four. This allows breeders to split bulls and donor cows into 25% (quarter) ownership shares, offering incredible flexibility for syndications and partnerships. This structural change unlocks a new level of value for your herd sires and donor cows. For example, a breeder can now retain full possession and a 75% ownership stake, while selling a 25% in-herd semen use interest. Alternatively, ownership can be divided evenly into four 25% shares, with one partner retaining physical possession and the other three holding semen or embryo rights. This flexibility makes it much easier to divide up embryo production on elite cows and structure bull partnerships that benefit multiple operations simultaneously. Your Board of Directors are continually looking at new technologies and industry trends to find ways to add value to the cattle you raise. Whether it is adding flexibility to the junior show ring, rewarding diligent performance data collection, updating our selection indexes, or unlocking pedigree value, every decision is made with the membership’s bottom line in mind. I believe the Shorthorn breed is moving in the right direction. Over the next 12 months, as these new programs take root, they will provide us with more accurate data and give your cattle more value. Let’s continue to channel our shared passion into raising the best Shorthorn cattle possible. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing the continued progress of our breed.
2026 HERDSMAN OF THE YEAR
Nominees
by Wade Minihan, ASA director of shows & member communications The Herdsman of the Year is a prestigious award sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation and honored with a trophy buckle in memory of Lawrence Grathwohl. Lawrence Grathwohl was a loyal member of the ASA who passed at the young age of 41. He was best known for raising Shorthorn cattle, which he showed across the country. This award is voted on by fellow Shorthorn breeders and is announced each year during the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE).
New last year, the Show Committee decided to update the election process. Similar to the Junior Herdsman Award at the National Junior Shorthorn Show, nominations are submitted ahead of time by the committee. Each committee member ranks the nominees from top to bottom. The three individuals with the lowest total scores will appear on the ballot. These three finalists will then be voted on by the open exhibitors at the 2026 NAILE. A Herdsman of the Year ballot will be distributed to each open show exhibitor
at check-in at NAILE. Ballots must be returned by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, November 16, 2026. Each ballot will include the farm/ranch information, a bio, and a photo of each nominee. Votes will be tallied, and the Herdsman of the Year will be awarded prior to the Champion Purebred Female selection on Tuesday, November 17th, 2026. Plan to join us in the Ville this year and watch us award this year’s Herdsman of the Year. The 2026 Herdsman of the Year nominees are listed below.
Chris Ellason - “Big Chief”- WHR Shorthorns Chris Ellason, better known around the barns as “Big Chief,” resides in Pottsboro, Texas, with his wife, Amy, and daughter, Hadley. Chris has been involved in the livestock show industry in one way or another since 1997, developing a lifelong passion for cattle, youth exhibitors, and, perhaps most importantly, the people who make the show industry special. In 2005, Chris began working with WHR Shorthorns as show help. What started as an opportunity to assist at shows quickly developed into a more regular position and eventually grew into a passion for the Shorthorn breed. Over the years, Chris has become an important part of the WHR Shorthorns team, contributing to the success of the operation both in and out of the show ring. During his time with WHR Shorthorns, Chris has been fortunate to be part of success at both the state and national levels. With WHR Shorthorns having a strong following among junior exhibitors, particularly throughout Texas, Chris has been involved with numerous championship and reserve championship accomplishments at major Texas livestock shows, including Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, and the State Fair of Texas. Chris has also been a longtime part of the Lone Star Edition Sale, where he especially enjoys meeting customers, building relationships, and helping families find cattle that fit their goals. For him, those relationships are one of the most rewarding parts of being involved in the livestock industry. Today, Chris helps manage a commercial cattle herd near his home while remaining actively involved with WHR Shorthorns. His responsibilities include working with show and sale cattle, assisting customers, coordinating activities at livestock shows, and helping ensure exhibitors have a positive experience. Chris takes great pride in the relationships he has built throughout the cattle industry and in being able to help young exhibitors and families along the way. He looks forward to continuing to support the Shorthorn breed and the next generation of livestock exhibitors. Chris is extremely honored and grateful to be nominated for Herdsman of the Year. He would like to extend his sincere appreciation to Bill Rasor for the opportunities, guidance, and support he has provided throughout Chris’s career. He is also thankful to Jeff Sargent and the many individuals who have invested their time, knowledge, and encouragement in him over the years. Their support and mentorship have played an important role in shaping his career and his passion for the livestock industry.
Jeff and Suzie Winkle - Cedar Lane Farm Jeff and Susie Winkle of Cedar Lane Farm have been working together preparing, fitting, and showing cattle for 43 years. When they were first married, they worked for an Angus operation that was very active at major shows and state fairs, so their first couple of years together were spent traveling the country and working cattle. After the birth of their son, Scott, they decided to move to Susie’s family farm and begin raising their own cattle. They chose Shorthorns, a breed Jeff had grown up with as a kid. Susie likes to say, “She brought the farm. Jeff brought the cattle.” While raising their family, they exhibited as much as their budget allowed and as much as their children wanted to participate. After their children were through college and on their own, Jeff and Susie reinvested in their cattle program and, as they put it, “freshened up the herd.” Today, Cedar Lane Farm has approximately 15 purebred cows and a similar number of recip cows. They take great pride in showing cattle that come from their own cows and rarely show purchased animals or embryo calves. Their goal is to sell 80% of their calves as breeding or show stock, a goal they have been able to come close to reaching in recent years. The Winkles have enjoyed several accomplishments along the way. Last year, they were fortunate to have the Northeast Region Champion and Reserve Show Bull of the Year, as well as the Reserve Show Heifer of the Year, along with several division champions. They were also fortunate enough to exhibit the Champion Pen of Three Heifers at Oklahoma City. They take particular pride in the fact that these cattle were raised from their own cows or from a cow they bred. One of the things Jeff and Susie are most proud of is doing the work themselves. From hoof trimming to sale pictures and everything in between, they handle their own cattle and rely on very little outside help, with their embryologist being the main exception. Most importantly, Jeff and Susie are thankful for the friendships they have made throughout the Shorthorn breed. They would like to thank their fellow breeders for the nomination, saying that the respect behind it means a great deal to both of them. For the Winkles, one of the best parts of traveling to shows is getting to arrive, renew old friendships, and catch up with the people who have become such an important part of their lives.
Tray Zabokrtsky - Schrag/Nikkel Show Cattle Tray Zabokrtsky grew up on a diversified cow-calf operation in Morrowville, Kansas, where his passion for the cattle industry began at an early age. Through exhibiting cattle, he developed an appreciation for the dedication, work ethic, and commitment required to compete at a high level. Those early experiences in the show cattle industry helped shape his passion for raising and exhibiting competitive livestock and continue to influence his approach to the industry today. In 2020, while attending Hutchinson Community College, Tray was given the opportunity to work for the Nikkel family in McPherson, Kansas. The experience introduced him to Shorthorn cattle and quickly sparked an appreciation for the breed. What began as an opportunity to gain experience eventually developed into a lasting passion and opened the door to another opportunity in South Dakota, where he became the herdsman for Schrag/ Nikkel Show Cattle. Working alongside two highly competitive and respected families has continued to fuel Tray’s drive to improve and succeed in the show cattle industry. He plays an active role in the day-to-day operations of Schrag/ Nikkel Show Cattle, contributing to mating decisions, livestock management, and the daily care and preparation of the cattle. Tray understands that success in the show ring starts long before cattle ever arrive at a show. His involvement extends beyond preparing cattle for competition, with an emphasis on the time, consistency, and attention to detail required to develop cattle capable of competing at the highest levels. His dedication to the program is evident in the work he puts in every day. Whether he is preparing cattle at home, making decisions in the barn, or traveling to a show, Tray is willing to put in the time and represent the program, no matter the distance or the hours required. For Tray, the opportunity to work with Shorthorns has grown into much more than a job. It has become a career and a passion, built through the people he has worked alongside, the cattle he has developed, and the continued pursuit of getting better.

Final placement is determined the week of NAILE. • Registration Papers o Physical papers are highly encouraged but not required. o Digital copies must be downloaded as a PDF certificate (not just a screenshot). o Junior cattle registration papers will be tattoo-verified/stamped at check-in. • Cow/Calf Pairs Both cow and calf must have registration papers presented at check-in. • Stall Requests o Due November 1, 2026 to wade@ shorthorn.org. o Open Shorthorn Cattle will be stalled by ASA staff. o Junior Shorthorn Only will be stalled by NAILE staff. o Be detailed—include exhibitor names, cattle numbers, breeds, and any shared tack arrangements.
o Cow/Calf pairs are allocated one tie space. Calf will need to be its own entry for space. Example Request #1 Dolly Parton would like to stall with Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, and George Strait. Dolly has 1 heifer in the junior show and an Angus heifer. Garth has 1 Shorthorn. George has 2 Herefords sharing stalls/tack. Example Request #2 • Dolly Parton – 3 Shorthorns (both shows), 1 Junior Shorthorn, 1 Angus (both shows) = 5 total • George Strait – 2 Herefords (both shows, sharing tack) • Reba – 3 Shorthorns (both shows), stalls near Dolly • Garth Brooks – 1 Shorthorn (both shows), stalls near Dolly Stay tuned to your email! Exhibitor communication will be handled electronically—make sure your entry has a valid email address so you don’t miss important updates.

Looking Ahead to Louisville Excitment for What’s to Come of the highlights of the year, bringing together young people from across the country to compete, learn, and build friendships that last well beyond the show ring. What makes Deck the Stalls so important is the impact it has on the future of the American Junior Shorthorn Association. The support of our breeders, families, and industry partners helps provide meaningful opportunities for juniors to grow as exhibitors and leaders while strengthening their connection to the Shorthorn breed. Every contribution helps the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund continue building a strong foundation for the next generation. I encourage everyone to check out this year’s offerings and find a way to get involved. Whether you are bidding on a genetic lot, supporting Junior Nationals through a sponsorship, or participating in another way, your support makes a difference. I look forward to seeing everyone in Louisville and sharing another memorable NAILE with the Shorthorn family. With a great fundraiser ahead and NJSS in Madison on the horizon, there is plenty to be excited about!

As we look ahead to the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky, I am excited for another opportunity to bring the Shorthorn family together. NAILE is a special time to reconnect with friends, meet new people, and celebrate the progress our breed continues to make. With another exciting show on the horizon, there is plenty to look forward to both in and out of the show ring. One event I am especially looking forward to is this year’s Deck the Stalls fundraiser. We have some outstanding offerings lined up, from genetic lots that can help elevate your herd to Shorthorn-themed items and household goods. There is something for everyone, whether you are looking to invest in your breeding program or find something unique for your home. The fundraiser will also feature opportunities to support the 2027 National Junior Shorthorn Show in Madison, Wisconsin. From sponsoring awards to advertising your operation in the NJSS program, these offerings allow breeders and businesses the opportunity to promote their programs while supporting an event that means so much to our junior membership. NJSS is one
New OWNERSHIP RULES NEW - Sibling Multi-Ownership Rule Multiple ownership of an animal is permitted only between eligible sibling junior members. This option is intended to provide flexibility for families with multiple junior members while maintaining individual exhibitor responsibility and preventing ownership arrangements with adults, breeders, farms or other non-sibling parties. To qualify for sibling multi-ownership: • Eligible Owners: All listed owners must be current AJSA members and meet AJSA age eligibility requirements. • Sibling Definition: Multiple owners must be siblings, including full siblings (half-siblings, step-siblings or fostersiblings) who have the same contact address listed in the registry. • Ownership Restrictions: Parents,
grandparents, other relatives, expired junior members who have aged out of AJSA eligibility, unrelated individuals, breeders, syndicates, partnerships, farm names or family farm names may not be included as additional owners for an animal to qualify under the Sibling Multi-Ownership Rule. • Registration: All eligible sibling owners must be listed as owners on the animal’s registration or record by the applicable ownership deadline. • Designated Exhibitor: The junior member who enters the animal for a specific show is considered the designated exhibitor and is required to exhibit that animal at that show. • No Exhibitor Changes: Once entries have closed, the designated exhibitor
may not be changed to another sibling at the show, regardless of whether the other sibling is also a registered owner of the animal. • One Entry Per Show: An animal may only be entered and exhibited by one sibling at each individual show or event. Joint ownership does not permit the same animal to be entered under multiple siblings at the same show. • Exhibitor Designation by Show: The designated exhibitor is specific to each show. A different eligible sibling owner may enter and exhibit the animal at a subsequent show, provided that sibling is listed as an owner and completes the entry for that event by the applicable entry deadline.
NEW - Bred & Owned Ownership Rule Bred and Owned Exhibition Rule: To be eligible to exhibit in the Bred and Owned classification, the junior exhibitor must be the recognized breeder of the animal. The following conditions must be met without exception: • Ownership at Conception: The dam of the exhibited animal must be registered or recorded with the junior exhibitor listed as an owner in the registry at the time of conception. This applies strictly to all methods of breeding: Natural
Service, Artificial Insemination (AI), and Embryo Transfer (ET). o Multiple Ownership Restrictions: Co-ownership of the dam at the time of conception is permitted only among immediate family members. o Immediate Family Definition: For this rule, “immediate family” is strictly defined as siblings, (half-siblings, stepsiblings, foster-siblings) who have the same contact address in the registry as the exhibiting junior member.
o Disqualifying Ownership: Coownership of the dam at the time of conception with parents, grandparents, expired junior members that are immediate family who have aged out, non-sibling relatives, unrelated breeders, syndicates, or general farm names instantly voids Bred and Owned eligibility for the resulting offspring.
EFFECTIVE MARCH 2027 These rules will go into effect in March 2027 following the 2026-2027 show season. The first show this will be in place is the 2027 National Junior Shorthorn Show.
