• Junior members turning 22 in 2017, your Junior membership is good through Dec. 31, 2017. At that time you will need to become an adult member by January 1, 2018 to maintain membership in ASA. You are still eligible to show at the Junior National in 2017 if you turn 22 anytime during the 2017 year.

• New age requirement for Junior Nationals! Starting January 1, 2017 the age to show at the Junior National has been lowered to 7. The junior member has to be 7 on January 1 of the year the Junior National is taking place to be eligible to show at the Junior National. For example, if a child was born on 12/15/2009 they will be eligible to show at the 2017 Junior Nationals in Tulsa because they were 7 on January1, 2017.

Miscellaneous Information • Effective March 1, 2016, DNA sent to the office without complete paperwork will incur an additional charge.

• Effective January 1, 2015, EPD’s will only be available to Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) breeders of the American Shorthorn Association. As a reminder, regardless of membership status of owner, an animal registered by a WHR breeder will have access to EPDs for the lifetime of that animal.

• All A.I. Sires and Donor Dams are required to have all genetic conditions tested (TH, PHA, DS) and DNA genotype (SeekSire) completed before registration of progeny.

To make a bull non-certificate, ALL DNA requirements for an A.I. sire must be completed before we will make them non-certificate.

Transferring Bred Females Bred females being transferred must have all the breeding information including name and registration number of sire(s), type of service, date of service and/or pasture exposure dates.

WHR Breeders 1. WHR Breeders cannot register any calves until their cow herd inventory assessment is completed and paid in full for that calendar year.

2. To take advantage of the free registration benefit of being a WHR Breeder, you must register your natural calf before it turns one (1) year of age.

Contemporary Groups If you enter your calf crop into the registry in several different sessions, you must indicate which contemporary group each calf belongs to. To do this, use management codes (the “Mgmt” box) and the “Season” drop down menu when submitting calves to the registry. All calves in a contemporary group must have the same management code and same season submitted in order to be properly grouped together. If these are not used, the registry will group calves by the day they are submitted.

ommunication is a necessity and it starts with including a subscription to Shorthorn Country with every paid adult ASA membership. Because the ASA Board of Directors and ASA Staff feel a strong need to have better communication with membership, now every paid member of the ASA will receive a monthly copy of the Shorthorn Country, “The Voice of the Shorthorn Breed”.

The ASA also sends out The Insider every other week as an email blast to help communicate with 6,000 Shorthorn breeders. I encourage you to open The Insider and click on the links to update yourself with breed activities and policies. The more wellinformed you become, the more you can take advantage of programs, activities and changes.

Breeders may purchase advertising in this email blast reaching 6,000 Shorthorn enthusiasts every other week at a very nominal fee. Contact shelby@shorthorn.org.

Communication can always be improved upon; it is about understanding the intentions behind the information. We are assembling an updated list of State Shorthorn Associations. At this time we have contact information (Presidents, Secretary Managers, and Junior Advisors) for 23 active State Associations.

We will forward regular informational updates to these State Association leaders to share with their membership through state newsletters or by word of mouth at state functions. The intent is for this process to bring the state leaders together as a resource for the breed. They will become Shorthorn ambassadors in many ways as they are kept wellinformed while providing a vehicle for incoming communications with each state to submit their calendar of events to us in Kansas City. The state calendars will be included on the main calendar on the ASA’s website for everyone’s advantage. State Associations and ASA working in harmony will build a stronger breed.

We still have a number of states without a State Shorthorn Association. If you are interested in starting an association in your state, or need to send activity dates for your state association to ASA, contact Rachel in the ASA office or email her at rachel@shorthorn.org.

DNA Testing Options Important Information - The DNA Testing Submission Form must be completely filled out when it is sent to the ASA office. Be sure to include tattoo, Reg #, sex, DOB, Sire Reg #, and Dam Reg # on each animal you are submitting for testing. Forms that are incomplete are subject to a processing fee.

- A $2/sample fee will be charged to all hair samples. GeneSeek has implemented this fee due to increased processing and a higher percentage of retesting with hair samples.

- GeneSeek recommends using tissue samples as their preferred method of genetic testing. Tissue samples are preferred due to their ease of sampling, longer storage life, and quicker turnaround time. Tissue samples are taken using an Allflex applicator tool to remove a sample from the animal’s ear into a small tube for storing the sample. If you are interested in using tissue sampling, contact GeneSeek to order your applicator tool and sample collection units.

- If you have any questions regarding DNA testing, please contact the ASA office.

Available Tests (Test That Satisfy AI Sire/Donor Dam Requirements) GGP-LD 50K with TH, PHA, DS: $85 This testing for AI Sire/Donor Dam requirements includes parent verification, a GGP-LD 50K DNA profile, and testing for known genetic conditions (TH, PHA, DS). Selecting animals for this test will allow them to have genomically-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs).

GGP-F250 with TH, PHA, DS: $140 This testing for AI Sire/Donor Dam requirements includes parent verification, a GGPF250 (250K) DNA profile, and testing for known genetic conditions (TH, PHA, DS). Selecting animals for this test will allow them to have genomically-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs).

Genomic Profiles (GGP Products) GGP-F250: $115 This is a high density (250K) testing panel that includes parentage markers. This test is recommended for elite sires and donor dams with large numbers of progeny. Selecting this profile will allow the animal to receive GE-EPDs. GGP-LD 50K: $55 This is a low density (50K) testing panel that includes parentage markers. Animals with the LD-50K profile will receive GE-EPDs. GGP-uLD 25K: $40 The markers on the GGP-uLD profile are used to calculate GE-EPDs. The available markers on the GGP-uLD can be imputed to the equivalence of the GGP-LD 50K. The GGP-uLD is recommended for young bulls, replacement heifers, or testing the entire cow herd.

Genetic Conditions and Stand Alone Tests Testing for genetic conditions and stand-alone products can be ordered independently of GGP products. However, animals tested for genetic conditions without a genomic profile will NOT have GE-EPDs available. All genetic condition and parentage tests (both bundle and stand-alone) are automatically loaded into the Digital Beef registry if the test is run through GeneSeek.

Any Junior whose membership expires on December 31 of the year they turn 22 is eligible to become a Senior ASA member at a cost of $50 for the first year if the application printed on the back of the letter notifying them of the expiration is completed and returned, with payment in full, to the office by March 1 of the year which follows the expiration.

On the rare occasion that a WHR assessed cow has multiple natural calves born during an assessment year, ASA policy allows for a reduced cost of the registration for the additional calf. The following conditions must be met: a. The calves must be registered before 12 months of age. b. The assessed cow either had twins or had a calf born early in the assessment year and calved again toward the end of the assessment year. c. The WHR member must contact the ASA office to have access to the reduced registration cost.

AJSA Board Candidates...............

Kane Aegerter is a senior at Seward High School. After graduation, he plans on attending college to obtain a degree in agricultural business. Kane is the son of Jeff and Darla Aegerter, Seward, Nebraska.

Kane has been active in the Shorthorn breed since he began showing ten years ago.

He has exhibited many Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus winners at NWSS, NAILE, American Royal and Junior Nationals.

Kane has been an active participant in Seward High School Athletics playing baseball in the spring. He also played baseball in the fall in Lincoln.

He participated in FFA serving as offices his junior and senior year as well as competing in livestock judging. Kane served in many 4-H club offices and participated in 4-H shows at a county and state level. He also was on the Seward High School Choir and Future Business Leaders of America.

“Promotion of the Shorthorn breed is vital to the breed’s continued success and I want to assist in that promotion,” Kane said. “One way is to become a mentor and role model for other showmen and be a representative for the Shorthorn breed to the industry.”

Desirae Logsdon is a freshman at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, where she is studying Agribusiness. She is the daughter of Barry and Renae Logsdon, Amanda, Ohio. Desirae has been active showing Shorthorns since she has attended every Junior Nationals since 2007.

Desirae served as an Ohio Shorthorn Lassie Queen, Fairfield County Beef Ambassador and Ohio Junior Shorthorn Board of Directors. She was the 4th overall high point senior at the 2016 Junior Nationals and 4th overall high point intermediate at the 2015 Junior Nationals. Her family has been raising Shorthorns since the 1990s.

They have worked on expanding with the use of AI and ET in their herd. She

also received her state FFA degree and was on the Wilmington College Dean’s List.

“I know growing up in the program I always looked up to the men and women in the red jackets,” Desirae said. “I would like to be an AJSA director because I feel that I have a lot to offer the AJSA and I would like to give back to the industry that taught me so many things.”

Allison Dragstrem is a senior at Maconaquah High School. After graduation, she plans on attending Lake Land Junior College to obtain a degree in Agricultural Business. After Lake Land College she plans to attend Western Illinois University to pursue a degree in Agricultural Business and a minor in finance.

Allison is the daughter of Bob and Elaine Dragstrem, Amboy, Indiana.

Allison has been a very active member in the Shorthorn breed. She has been an Indiana Shorthorn Association member for nine years, serving as secretary 2012-2016 and the vice-president in 2017. She was the Indiana Shorthorn Lassie Princess in 2011-2012. Allison has attended five KEY Conferences. She has also been active at the chapter and state level in FFA serving on the chapter officer team, state FFA Chorus and State FFA Executive Committee Team.

“While serving as the Lassie Princess I have learned what it entails to become successful in and out of the show ring,” Allison said. “I am ready to take on that responsibility. I have met many passionate Shorthorn juniors and breeders in my travels and I would be honored to represent them as a director on the junior board.”

Sammi Schrag is a senior at Freeman High School and after graduation plans on attending South Dakota State University to obtain a degree in agricultural business. Sammi is the daughter of

Sammi is the current South Dakota Junior Shorthorn Association president and has served as a voting delegate for South Dakota for the past two years.

She has attended every junior national since 2007 and been champion showman, on the champion fitting team and a three-time speech champion. She has also attended the national shows such as Louisville, Denver and Kansas City exhibiting Shorthorn cattle. She has also attended a few KEY Conferences participating with the junior board members. She has been active with her chapter in FFA and as a student council member for all four years of high school.

“Throughout my entire life, I knew one thing for certain,” Sammi said.

“Someday I wanted to be on the Shorthorn Junior Board of Directors wearing that jacket. The spark was ignited at my first junior national in Lawton, Oklahoma, when I was just eight years old.”

Sarah Harner is a senior at Xenia High School and after graduation she plans on attending Ohio State Agricultural and Technical Institute to obtain a degree in Animal Industries with a minor in Animal Nutrition. She is the daughter of Scott and Kristy Harner, Xenia, Ohio.

Sarah served as the 2016-2017 Ohio Shorthorn State Lassie as well as a 2016 Ohio Shorthorn Junior Board Member and the 2016 Greene County Fair Queen. She has also attended many Junior Nationals and participated in several activities while attending Junior Nationals. Sarah is the 2017 Xenia FFA Chapter President and a participant in the National FFA Ag Science Fair. She also is the Xenia High School Class of 2017 President and a member of the National Honor Society.

“This position requires a lot of teamwork,” Sarah said. “Cooperation among the members on the board, as well as between involved in the association is key. I feel as I have the skills this position requires.” =

=Junior Corner First Time For Everything They say there is a first time for everything. To say that I have had just a few firsts during my three-year term on the junior board would be an understatement. Some might say that I lived a sheltered life as a child, others would just say I just hadn’t experienced much.

I had many firsts on the junior board. Some of the many things include my first time on a plane, my first time experiencing altitude sickness, my first time eating sushi, first time seeing the ocean in person, and the first time meeting many people that have become my good friends.

One of the most important things that I learned while on the board was not to take anything for granted. I learned to always try new things, go new places and eat things you would not normally eat.

Part of being on the board means travelling to new and different places.

In my time on the board, I have been to Colorado, Kentucky, Arkansas, South Dakota and California to name a

few. My fellow board members and our advisor tried to make new memories on every trip.

It is extremely fun to have new experiences and to go new places, but part of the process of making memories comes from what you do when you are on your trip. If you do not do anything new or exciting on the trip you are on, was it even worth going?

Another thing that the junior board has given me is plenty of friends. My Shorthorn family has always been big, but the junior board allowed me to extend this family across the nation.

The people that I have gotten to know during my three years on the board are some of my favorite people.

Sometimes raising Shorthorns can be difficult because from time to time they get criticized by unknowledgeable outside sources. As Shorthorn breeders we have all heard about the opinions of other people about the breed we love.

They may not be the most popular breed, or the breed with the most registrations per year, but Shorthorns

have a lot to be proud of.

Their maternal characteristics are some of the best that you can find. The marbling that you can find in a Shorthorn ribeye is superior when comparing to many other breeds. Not many other breeds can claim both good carcass traits as well as maternal traits.

Shorthorns can. It is a wonder that there is not a niche market for Shorthorn beef. I hope that someday we can make that happen.

I would like to say thank you to everyone who has allowed me to do everything I have done with the junior board. The Shorthorn Association, the junior members, and my friends and family. It has been a wonderful experience.

As I sit and reflect on the last three years, a lot of emotions start to run through my head. I am thankful for the people I have gotten to know and for the opportunities that the junior board = has provided me.

ASA DNA Lab Policy as of May 1, 2017 GeneSeek lab is the designated Lab for the American Shorthorn Association.

However, AgriGenomics lab may be used as an alternative for testing Shorthorn genetic conditions only. Testing results will only be accepted for the ASA registry from these two labs. A completed and signed order form must accompany the DNA samples submitted in order for testing results to be eligible for entry into the ASA registry.

The ASA re-negotiated to reduce the bundle price for TH, PHA and DS with GeneSeek, and is now competitive with AgriGenomics. However, GeneSeek is unable to match the turnaround time for the three genetic condition tests.

Therefore, AgriGenomics may be used as

an alternative lab only for genetic condition testing; this gives breeders an option when in need of a faster turnaround time.

AgriGenomics is an alternative option for the ASA for testing the three genetic conditions, TH, PHA, and DS only.

AGRIGENOMICS IS NOT CAPABLE OF DOING ANY PARENTAGE OR GENOMIC TESTS. The Shorthorn order form on the AgriGenomics website must be signed and completed when sending in samples. Test results will be sent by the lab to the ASA for entry into the registry. The ASA will charge a $3.00 fee per head to the breeder in order to manually enter AgriGenomics test results in the registry.

Anyone needing AI Sire and/or Donor Dam qualifications (parentage plus TH, PHA, and DS) will need to send their DNA to the ASA office with a completed and signed ASA order form.

There is a special price for this package.

GeneSeek lab test results are sent to the ASA in a compatible downloadable format therefore there is no additional fee for entering the test results from GeneSeek in the registry.

This year the AJSA is joining with the American Junior Simmental and Gelbvieh Associations to hold a new youth leadership conference. These IGS breeds are hosting the Youth Leadership

–Douglas Adams I think Mr. Adams summarizes how many of us feel when we think of deadlines! When I was in college, a deadline was a challenge to see how long I could procrastinate writing a paper or researching a project and still have it done just in time! A few years of life experience helped me realize that it’s less stressful to wait until the very last second to finish everything, but occasionally I revert to my old ways.

There’s a big deadline coming up for Shorthorn breeders. May 31 is the deadline to turn in performance data to be included in the Fall 2017 genetic evaluation. If your calving book is still on the dashboard of the pickup, take it into the house one night and get your birth weights recorded. Don’t forget about the notebook in the barn full of weaning weights that need entering. You have

until May 31 to get your data turned in!

With everything that’s happening on the farm, it can be tough to find time to take care of record keeping. The last task you want to do at the end of the day is enter data into the computer. However, this is an important part of raising purebred cattle, just like breeding, herd health, or marketing.

It’s no secret that there has been lots of change in genetic technology recently.

With the implementation of GE-EPDs, you might think that collecting and recording performance data isn’t as important as it used to be. That’s not the case. Yes, genomic information is helpful in improving accuracy of EPDs, but performance data is still the driving force of genetic evaluations. As purebred cattle producers, good record keeping is important to the success of both you and your customer base. The old adage “You can’t manage what you don’t measure” is certainly true. Without record keeping,

it’s harder to track the progress made in your herd. Your customers use records and performance information as part of their purchasing decisions. If you don’t have the information they need, they might make their purchases elsewhere from someone who does. Proper data collection, recording, and contemporary grouping are all necessary to help the Shorthorn breed have the strongest genetic evaluation possible. This is one example of how this breed can continue towards one of our breed initiatives: to develop better Shorthorn cattle. Let’s keep it up!

Impossible? Maybe Not Even though the heading for this page is “Beef Business”, sometimes my best ideas come when I look outside of the cattle world. This is one of those times.

I’m a proud alum of Mississippi State University and a huge fan of Bulldog athletics. My family and I traveled to Dallas to watch the Lady Bulldogs in the women’s basketball Final Four at the end of March. It was the first time in school history that the team had advanced to play on the season’s final weekend. Their opponent: The University of Connecticut, known throughout women’s basketball as UConn. UConn is the dominant force in the sport, and they came to Dallas on a 111 game winning streak. That’s almost 3 seasons without losing a game!

I’d be lying if I said I thought State had a realistic chance to beat UConn.

Most of the State fans who made the trip would have agreed that our team would

not end the UConn winning streak.

Thankfully, the Lady Bulldog coaches and players didn’t think like their fans.

They developed a game plan, practiced hard, and truly believed they could beat this team that had been called “unbeatable”.

When the game started, the Lady Bulldogs showed they were ready to play.

Mississippi State was in control of the game, leading by 16 points in the second quarter. Like any good team, UConn fought back until the game was tied after 3 quarters. Both teams took leads in the 4th quarter, but the clock hit 0:00 with the game still tied. With 12 seconds left in overtime, Mississippi State got the ball for a chance to win, taking a shot just before the buzzer sounded. You could have heard a pin drop in the second it took the basketball to fly from the shooter’s hand through the goal for the game winning basket. After it went in,

silence was replaced with a roar of excitement! There were 20,000 people in attendance, and at least 17,000 of them were joyously celebrating the monumental upset the Lady Bulldogs just completed (the UConn fans weren’t amused).

So, what’s my point to writing this piece? I suppose it’s partly to share an uplifting story, as well as brag on my alma mater. More importantly, it’s to stress that what seems impossible can be done. A positive mindset, a strong plan, and a lot of hard work are all necessary to tackling the “impossible” task. I’m sure there are goals for your operation that others think there is no way you can accomplish. The next time they voice their doubts, remind them that it was also impossible for UConn to lose, and like the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs, you believe in conquering the impossible. =

=News & Notes Farewells Paul D. Weirick 83, of Silver Lake, Indiana, passed away February 5, 2017.

He was born February 27, 1993 to Clifford and Mildred Weirick.

He was a long time breeder of registered Shorthorn cattle, having been with Shorthorns most of his life starting with his fathers Beechwood Farm Shorthorns. He was a regular supporter of 4-H, sponsoring trophies at the fair, serving as a 4-H leader and he and his family helped several 4-H members with their Shorthorn beef projects.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary; a son Jeff and wife Linda; a daughter Lee and husband Greg Kuhn; three grandchildren; one great grandson.

John Gerald “Jerry” Taylor, Buffalo, Mo., entered into eternal life on March 27, 2017. Jerry was born on February 29, 1924, to John and Ada Forrester Taylor, one of seven siblings and the last survivor.

Jerry married Mary Virginia Likes in 1948 in Macomb, “robbing the cradle as many said.” They have three daughters who they loved dearly: Pam and Gary Naylor, Buffalo, Mo.; Lana and Dr. Bruce Packard, Magnolia, Texas; and Melody and Mark Herman, Holland, Mich. They also have three grandchildren that Jerry adored: Brett and Brittney Naylor, Centralia, Mo., Sarah Packard, Magnolia, Texas, and Marie Packard, Des Moines, Iowa. He has several nieces and nephews that survive.

Jerry also leaves behind countless friends who loved him and were part of his family, including Kate Carmean, Virginia Watson, Garry Hager and Gary Crosby.

Jerry and Mary lived in the BushnellPrairie City, Illinois area until 1986.

Jerry was a crop farmer and raised Purebred Shorthorn Cattle. Cattle was his love and he won many championships across the country showing his prized Shorthorn cattle. He also was a well-known and well-respected cattle judge, traveling the United States judging all breeds of cattle from the Cow Palace in San Francisco to the Houston

Livestock Show and Rodeo, to many state fairs and county fairs.

In 1986, Jerry and Mary relocated to Buffalo, Mo., to be closer to daughter Pam and her family, especially to watch Brett grow up. Jerry continued his cattle judging and was often found helping local cattlemen (Dr. Bob Coscia Limousins, Springfield, Mo., and Gregg Alsup, Fair Grove, Mo., both great family friends).

His walls in his home office are adorned with plaques and awards he has received throughout the years. To name a few, they include: University of Missouri Long-Term Commitment and Support of the MU Extension Program (2013), 2013 Pioneer Award of the Ozark Empire Fair Foundation, Charter Officer and Director of the Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association, 2002 Long-Standing Service and Dedication to Missouri State Fair, National Livestock and Meat Board Director (1970-1973), Land of Lincoln Livestock Award 1987, Schuyler County Fair Honorary Director (1977), Illinois State Fair Board of Directors (1970–1986), and McDonough District Hospital (Macomb, Ill.) Board of Directors (1970- 1982).

Jerry was an inspiration and a humble, selfless man. As great friend Monte Lowderman of Lowderman Auctioneering, Macomb, Ill., reminisced, “Jerry was a family man, who spent his whole life (68 years) with his true love and together they raised three beautiful daughters. He was a friend to many; he was a livestock expert and enthusiast; and he was always a true and constant professional in his words and actions. Jerry knew how to have a good time and make sure everyone around him was also having a good time. A special man that has left this world a better place and who left a positive impression and influence on all he met.”

Anyone who met Jerry became a friend. He never met a stranger. He especially loved helping kids with livestock projects. Jerry always had a smile on his face and the most positive attitude. He never had a bad day.

Jerry loved flowers because they were bright and cheery. But in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Shorthorn Association Foundation, c/o Bill Rasor, 1800 Lovers

Charles William "Bill" Smithers, 90 of rural Pittsfield passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017 at his residence. Bill was born on May 28, 1926 in Milton, a son of the late Jess and Thelma Wilkins Smithers.

He married Vernice Katherine "Kate" Roberts on January 31, 1947; she preceded him in death on August 1, 2013.

Bill was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army in the Philippines in 1945-1947. Bill's military occupation was serving with the 32nd Antiaircraft Brigade on Leyte and Luzon, Philippine Islands. He drove military vehicles ranging up to and including 2 1/2 ton trucks hauling supplies, equipment and mail for the Brigade. He also maintained vehicles and made road repairs. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Independence ribbon and World War II Victory Medal.

Bill was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He farmed for most of his life in Martinsburg Township. He served as Commander for the Pittsfield American Legion Post, was a lifelong member of the Tri-County Shorthorn Association, served as a 4-H leader for many years, was active in the Pittsfield Saddle Club and a member of the First Christian Church in Pittsfield.

Bill loved trail riding and making trips in his covered wagon along with his beloved wife, Kate. He also enjoyed showing their Shorthorn cattle at numerous county and state fairs and in later years watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren exhibit their cattle at the fairs. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren play in their various sport activities.

Surviving are two sons, Greg (Pam) Smithers and Chuck (Tammy) Smithers both of Pittsfield; two daughters, Debbie (Mike) Bruner of Springfield and Cindy (Mark) Allen of Pittsfield; grandchildren, Clint (Heather) Allen of Taylor, MO; Travis Smithers, Mike

(Teija) Smithers, and Jason Smithers all of Pittsfield; Jess (Tracy) Smithers of Blue Mound, IL; Jake (Tracey) Allen of Pittsfield; Jerod (Janelle) Bruner of Chatham; Geela (Brian) Ruckman of Edwardsville; Josie Smithers of Pittsfield; and Wyatt (Katie) Smithers of New Canton. Twenty-two great children survive, in addition to a sister, Joan Smithers Renoud of Jacksonville, a sister-in-law, Gertrude Hobbs of Pittsfield and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Kate and a grandson, Josh Bruner.

Memorials are suggested to be made to the Highland Farms Smithers/Waggoner Cemetery or donor's choice.

Nathan William Zahradka, 29, Adams, ND, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017.

Nathan was born November 17,

1987 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Dale L. and Bonnie (Novak) Zahradka. He graduated from AdamsEdmore Public School and attended NDSU before returning home to Lankin to the family farm. Nathan was united in marriage to Crosley Francis on July 21, 2012. They made their home on a farmstead in rural Adams, ND. Their son Kellen Judge Zahradka was born on June 5, 2014.

Nathan enjoyed outdoor adventures, observing wildlife, fishing and treasure finding with his metal detector. His passion was turning fresh dirt with tractors and farming. Nathan loved spending time on his hobby farm with Crosley and Kellen tending to their gardens, caring for their chickens, exotic birds, aquarium fish and their two dogs Burton and Mesa.

Nathan is survived by his wife of

almost five years, Crosley; son, Kellen; his parents, Dale and Bonnie Zahradka, Lankin, ND; sisters: Nikki (Scott) Bylin, Pisek, ND; Brittney Zahradka, Fargo, ND; Tessa Zahradka, Williston, ND; nephews: Jase and Graham Bylin, Pisek, ND; mother and father-in-law, Roberta and Gene Francis, Fordville, ND; sisters-in-law, Riley Francis, Fargo, ND; Phoebe Francis, Grafton, ND; grandmothers: Shirley Zahradka, Grand Forks, ND; Louise Novak, Park River, ND; great grandmother, Mildred Machart, Park River, ND. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers: William Zahradka and William Novak and uncle, Buck Zahradka.

In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorials for Kellen’s education fund.

201 7 Interns Leah Giess Leah is a sophomore at Kansas State University studying Agricultural Communications and Journalism.

Having grown up on a purebred South Devon and Poundmaker operation in central Minnesota, she has deep roots in the cattle industry. Her family owned and operated ranch has grown to become a nationally known source of quality genetics. Over the years she has helped with all aspects of the family farm and worked to develop her own herd. Leah has interned with the Minnesota Beef Expo and recently stud-

ied abroad in Ireland. She has held several board positions in the North American Devon Association over the past 15 years and represented the breed as the Junior Ambassador from 20112013. She is currently a member of KState Block & Bridle, Collegiate Cattlemen’s Association, Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association. We are pleased to have Leah on the team for the summer as the communications intern! =

Emily Albert Emily is a junior at Oklahoma State University majoring in Animal Science and Agricultural Communications. She started in production agriculture at a young age, exhibiting livestock through her local 4-H and FFA chapter in Weatherford, Texas. Emily feels her participation in these organizations at the local and state levels ignited her passion for agriculture and the livestock industry. She has continued to be active in community organizations such as Agricultural Communicators of

Tomorrow and Alpha Zeta, and served as an officer of Block & Bridle as well as the Swine Club. After college she plans to pursue a career in the livestock industry, sharing information and ideas of the agricultural industry with the public.

Emily hopes to learn the intricate details of a breed associations day-to-day operations and lend her talents to the Shorthorn organization. We are grateful to have Emily with us this summer as the youth activities intern! =

Emma Penzenstadler Emma is in her third year at the University of Minnesota-Twin cities where she is majoring in Agricultural Communications and Marketing with a minor in animal science.
