Dear Shorthorn Friends, It is an honor for me to welcome you to the pages of the Keith and Nadene Lauer Dispersal Sale. Having grown up involved in the Shorthorn breed, Keith Lauer is a man I have always admired and held a great deal of respect for. For almost 70 years Keith has been a dedicated breeder of high quality, efficient, maternal, fault free cattle that have definitely stood the test of time.

I have had the privilege of traveling around this great Country and view many, many Shorthorn herds. It has always been notable that the KL prefix is prevalent all across the land. The KL prefix has had a profound effect on the Shorthorn breed and will continue to do so for some time to come because these cattle are and will be productive and profitable in the programs that they work. This sale will disperse a very prepotent gene pool and the impact will be seen in the Shorthorn breed for years to come.

Keith and Nadene Lauer are “salt of the earth” people and it has been my privilege to work with them in planning this sale. You can rest assured that their blood, sweat, and tears are behind the entire effort at Lauer Polled Shorthorns. Lauer Polled Shorthorns

It was in the 1950’s when I joined the American Shorthorn Association.

My start with Shorthorn Cattle was through a 4-H project. I credit my Uncle, Milton Nagely, for being instrumental in getting me interested in the purebred business. We were close neighbors and we went to many shows and sales together. He taught me “the ropes”.

The first significant purchase was Melita Rosewood 2 D from Arthur Waits of Cassoday, Kansas in 1954 at the Kansas State Shorthorn Sale. Numerous offspring have sold from this one cow, such as the pedigree of Waukaru Goldmine 2109 whose Dam has two KL Melita Rosewood cows in her pedigree.

In 1955, I purchased Solomon Valley Rose, (an eleven year old “bred-back” cow with twin calves, (a bull and a heifer). My Dad thought I had made a terrible mistake and said, “You have an eleven year-old cow about ready to lay down and die, and a heifer calf that won’t breed!” So, I did not feel good about this $265 purchase. I was only a year out of high school and didn’t have much money, but things didn’t work out too bad.

The cow had another heifer calf and bred again for another heifer and yes, the twin heifer did breed, which was the only heifer twin I’ve ever had with a bull twin that did breed. That twin calf established the KL Royal Rose family of which KL Double Duty came from. For many years, KL Double Duty had the lowest birth-weight EPD in the Shorthorn Breed.

Three of the nation’s top nine Birth-Weight Trait-Leading Ladies for 2004 were raised here, two of which were from the KL Royal Rose line.

Additions were made to the herd in 1957 with the 1/3rd herd purchase from the R.C. Boeger herd in Missouri. (Nadene’s brother bought the other two-third’s). All KL Rosewoods, KL Cassandrias, and KL Mina Star cow families stemmed from them.

An important decision was made in 1970 with the purchase of Homedale Cornet Leader 72nd from the Kaehler Family in MN. That was my first polled bull. All the cows were horned, but at least 99% of the calves born were polled.

Great satisfaction has come from being able to supply breeding stock to outstanding herd operations in 13 states and to furnish stock for two herds getting started recently.

In an attempt to build a herd that was functional and commercially applicable, there have been many learning experiences but also the unexpected privileges, such as hosting the 2007 American Shorthorn Association University Tour, Kansas Shorthorn Tours, hosting a group from Wales, and being chosen as one of the USA World Shorthorn stops in 2004.

Being named a Builder of the Breed in 1987, and having the National Western Shorthorn Show in Denver dedicated to our family in 2016 were humbling experiences.

My wife, Nadene and I have a wonderful family - - daughter, Rita Yoder (husband Ellis), and three grandsons who went to Kansas State University where the professors made Mechanical Engineers of them all. (This put an end to their cattle aspirations).

We also are thrilled to have four great-grand-children.

I have enjoyed (most of the time) raising Polled Shorthorns, which when handled right, are docile and their maternal traits are unbeatable!

The most enjoyable and lasting thing is not monetary, but having good friends in many places. I am thankful that the few heifers that I had in my teens have proved to be more than a 4-H project - - instead, a VOCATION!

It is our hope that many of you will be able to come and spend October 26, 2019 with us at the Salina Sale Barn (and be in your seat at 12 noon for a prompt auction start by Bruce Brooks.) Otherwise avail yourself to the sale via CCi.live being provided.

The cattle offered in the catalog are pictured as they were out in the pastures. By no means do we have pictures of all the cattle offered. Some were in a remote area and very difficult to “get to” because of heavy rains ruining pasture roads.

We have tried to develop a herd that was practical for the commercial cattle programs as well as the purebred programs.

Receiving certificates at the National Annual Meeting for eighteen of our cows the last two years as Pacer Performance Cows was a pleasant surprise and a verification that the efforts of our years was making a difference.

Most of you know that I chose Shorthorn cattle long ago and we have had many opportunities, friendships, and experiences because of our cattle operation here in the middle of the United States.
