2026 WHR assessments will come available to complete online starting November 1, 2025. They will also be printed/sent to those whose preferences are set as so in their DigitalBeef accounts. The Board of Directors approved pushing the deadline windows back, and they are listed below.

Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing.

3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal 2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number 3. A barcode number for each animal tested Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

Protecting Our Services and Strengthening the Shorthorn Future

L

ike every hardworking cattle operation and dedicated agricultural business in America today, the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) continues to experience rising costs in nearly every area of our daily operations. We are all feeling the undeniable reality of inflation across the board. Whether you are seeing it at the local feed store, feeling it at the fuel pump, or noticing it when you open your mailbox, the mounting expenses we all deal with in our daily lives impact the Association in the exact same way. Running a successful, nationwide breed association requires the same careful budgeting, resilient planning, and forward-thinking management as running a successful family farm or ranch.

We are certainly not unique in facing these macroeconomic challenges, but we are uniquely positioned to navigate them together as a strong, united membership.

Over the past several years, the ASA has absorbed significant and compounding increases in postage, commercial insurance, printing and publication costs, technology and software maintenance, commercial laboratory fees, employee retention, and basic daily utilities. Your Board of Directors and the dedicated ASA staff have worked incredibly hard to absorb these operational costs and delay any fee increases for as long as we possibly could. However, to ensure the long-term sustainability, efficiency, and continued growth of the Association, we must adapt to the current economic landscape.

The key to our ongoing success as a breed is protecting, maintaining, and strengthening the vital services that our breeders rely on every single day. From processing registrations and transfers with speed and accuracy to advancing our complex genetic evaluations and supporting our robust youth programs, these services are the lifeblood of our

breed’s advancement. To stay ahead of the curve, invest in future technologies, and maintain our prominent relevance in the highly competitive beef industry, the Board has proactively approved a modest, well-thought-out fee increase for the upcoming 2027 calendar year.

Transparent, Manageable Adjustments for Our Members We want to be completely transparent with our membership about what these changes look like and why they are necessary for our future. You will find a complete, detailed list of the new prices elsewhere in this issue of the magazine, but we want to highlight the primary adjustments so you can properly plan your operation’s budget.

Before diving into the specific changes, we want to make one detail absolutely clear regarding your herd management: None of the fee increases include DNA testing fees at this time.

• Adult Memberships: We are keeping the adjustment to our standard membership as minimal as possible. The annual adult membership will transition from $125 to $130, representing only a modest $5 increase. This ensures you maintain full access to ASA services, registrations, and member benefits without a significant impact to your bottom line.

• Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) Assessments: The WHR fee will move from $18 to $20 per head for those who take advantage of the early discount and complete their assessments by January 25th. This represents just a minimal $2 increase per head. For those submitting between January 26th and March 31st, the assessment fee will be $27 per head. Finally, any assessments completed after April 1st will be $35 per head. To maximize your savings, we highly encourage all members to submit inventories prior to the early January

deadline. Whole Herd Reporting remains the most cost-effective and data-rich way to manage your Shorthorn cattle, providing the foundational phenotypic data required to continuously improve the accuracy of our Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs).

• Junior Memberships: We are incredibly proud of the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) and the exceptional young leaders it produces.

To better support these youth programs, the Junior Membership will transition to a $100 one-time fee. This investment grants junior members access to national shows, conferences, and scholarships.

By moving to a one-time structure, families enjoy the convenience of a single transaction that covers their junior member throughout their entire eligible youth career, ensuring uninterrupted access without the hassle of annual renewals.

• Family Transfers: In an effort to support the transition of Shorthorn genetics to the next generation, we are pleased to announce that Family Transfer fees will remain steady and unchanged.

We want to do everything in our power to keep Shorthorn cattle within the family.

Investing in the Shorthorn Legacy Change is rarely easy, but these updates are a direct investment in the continued excellence of the American Shorthorn Association. They allow us to retain our talented staff, maintain a secure database, and ensure our promotional efforts remain top-tier. We are profoundly grateful for your dedication to the Shorthorn breed. State Associations & Staying In the Know As we move through 2026, it’s hard to believe how quickly the year is passing.

With summer in full swing, the American Shorthorn Association continues to stay focused on keeping members connected and informed.

Recently, the State Association Board of Directors listings and contact information were updated. Members can find the current directory in this issue of Shorthorn Country or on the ASA website at shorthorn.org under the Contacts tab. We encourage everyone to review the information and notify the ASA office of any corrections or updates. Maintaining accurate contact information helps strengthen communication across all levels of the breed. Any updates can be submitted to wade@shorthorn.org.

The National Junior Shorthorn Show has come to a close, marking another successful event that showcased the dedication and enthusiasm of our junior members and their families. As one event concludes, preparations are already underway for the next round of Shorthorn activities as exhibitors and

breeders turn their attention toward the upcoming Super Regional and Regional Shows.

Before long, the fall season will be upon us, bringing a full schedule of sales, shows, and breed activities. on the calendar and shared with the broader membership.

The Little Things That Make a Big Difference Exhibitors remember the banners & buckles. What is often forgotten are the small decisions made behind the scenes long before an animal enters the ring.

From submitting entries to maintaining a positive attitude, those little things often make the biggest impact on creating a successful and enjoyable show.

Read Beyond the Headline When entering for upcoming shows, the first instinct may be to jump right to the entry form. But pause to read the schedule & premium guide in detail.

Taking a few minutes now could save you hours of frustration later if important details are missed. Arrival times, health requirements and show schedules are outlined in advance as a resource for your benefit. Taking advantage of these resources can help prevent oversights from making an otherwise enjoyable experience a stressful one.

Don’t Wait Until the Deadline We have all been there (yes – even ASA staff), life gets busy and a deadline zips right past. Suddenly, what seemed simple becomes much more complicated. Completing registrations, transfers, entries, DNA submissions, hotel reservations or stall requests early provides a buffer if the unexpected arises.

Waiting until the last minute often turns something simple into a major challenge.

Check the Details…Again.

A few minutes spent reviewing information for accuracy can prevent headaches before and during a show.

Entry details such as registration number, birthdate, ownership and class selection are crucial for program accuracy. The fewer issues that arise while staff processes entries, the more time can be spent helping exhibitors enjoy their experiences rather than solving preventable problems.

Have a Plan – And a Backup One of the truest statements in life is simple: life happens. It is wishful thinking to be prepared for anything, but exhibitors who navigate the unexpected with grace and grit are often the ones most successful. Be it a truck breaking down or weather impeding your departure time, having extra supplies, important paperwork and a flexible mindset can assist in navigating challenges with confidence.

Be Present The show ring may be the focal point, but the most valuable parts of a show often happen outside of the ring.

Remember that your presence matters.

Your willingness to volunteer to help a first-time showman or sit down with a veteran breeder for a conversation provides benefits that extend beyond the show ring. Lasting impressions are shaped by our showmanship, courtesy and humility. These impressions are not only a reflection of ourselves, but the entire Shorthorn breed. Years from now, most exhibitors will remember the friendships formed, the mentors who offered advice and the experiences shared with fellow cattlemen and women long after they remember class placings. Make each memory worthwhile.

The Little Becomes the Big Show success rarely relies on one single moment. More often, it is built through countless small decisions made over time. Preparing in advance, paying attention to details, and investing in relationships that make cattle shows special ensure a rewarding experience for exhibitors of all ages.

So, the next time you load the trailer for a show, reflect on the many small decisions that helped get you to that point. Often, those little things are what make the biggest impact when the backdrop is in sight.

Beyond the Banner Every summer, thousands of photos hit social media. Champion banners, backdrop photos, sale photos, family photos, and snapshots of long days in the barn. We celebrate wins, milestones and moments—and we should.

But if you spend enough time around this industry, you realize something.

As we head out of another National Junior Shorthorn Show season, I always think about the things that make people return year after year. It is not just the cattle. It is not always who wins. Last year I wrote about building your brand and using different tools to market your operation. Marketing matters—but

Think about the businesses and brands you personally support. Most of the time, there are other options available. Yet you continue going back because of how they make you feel, how they communicate, and the trust they have built over time.

That does not require a large marketing budget.

Shorthorn Genetics: A Proven Solution to Bovine Congestive Heart Failure

As the beef industry pushes for heavier carcass weights, a costly issue is devastating feedlots: Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF). BCHF causes cattle to die from cardiac failure in the final 30 days before harvest. With feedlot losses currently averaging 4% to 6%, and fat steers valued at around $4,000 a head, the economic hit to the bottom line is massive.

To combat this, the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) formed a research partnership with Simplot Livestock. The ASA sent our entire databank of Neogen 100K DNA markers—over 10,200 head—to Simplot to format BCHF Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs).

Drawing on their 35,000-head genetic base, Simplot successfully calculated BCHF EPDs for 9,800 ASA animals.

The Shorthorn Advantage The results are a monumental victory for the breed. Over 90% of the tested cattle scored as “low” or “very low” risk for BCHF. In this system, any EPD below zero (a negative number) indicates low risk, with a -7 currently ranking in the top 1% for low risk. The data clearly showed that purebred Shorthorns possess extremely low-risk (minus) EPDs. The small percentage of higher-risk animals were largely Shorthorn Plus cattle carrying genetics from other breeds, such as Angus, Red Angus, or Maine-Anjou.

Using the Data in Your Herd Because BCHF is approximately 29% heritable, producers can actively make genetic selections to eliminate this condition. You can find these new BCHF EPDs on the DNA page of the Digital Beef Registry for any 100K-genomically tested animal. Accuracy naturally increases when multiple generations are tested. Moving forward, Simplot plans to incorporate physical heart-score testing from harvested cattle to validate and elevate these accuracy levels even further.

Looking Ahead Funded by the ASA Board of Directors and the Shorthorn Foundation, this is an ongoing 1- to 2-year research project. We will submit new 100K tests every four to six months to expand our databank.

To promote this immense commercial advantage, the ASA has launched targeted Facebook campaigns to reach commercial cattlemen.

Additionally, we recently visited the Simplot feedlot in Idaho to interview Dr.

Randall Raymond. This invaluable footage will be featured on an upcoming episode of The American Rancher in September.

This fact-backed research elevates Shorthorn cattle as a premier genetic solution for the commercial beef industry. We strongly encourage you to look up your cattle’s BCHF EPDs and make this a core part of your breeding and selection process.

Legacy Built on Partnership

The early morning fall breeze sweeps through the south pasture full of red, white and roan Shorthorn cattle. Nearby stands a barn full of show cattle, rooted in a three-generation Shorthorn operation.

The Ferguson family of Chickasha, Oklahoma, began their legacy when Jerry Arthur, retired Chickasha High School agricultural education advisor, invited Don Ferguson to partner with him purchasing Shorthorn cattle.

“Jerry had found a herd out in Washington State,” said Ferguson, owner of Lazy Bar F Shorthorns.

“He asked me if I wanted to buy into some Shorthorns.”

Arthur and his two sons flew to Washington to look at the Shorthorns and bought the beginning of the herd, Arthur said.

When they arrived back in Oklahoma, he offered Don 32

Ferguson the opportunity to join the partnership, Arthur said.

Ferguson started his herd out small, he said. He ran his Shorthorn cattle similar to a commercial herd, rather than a show stock operation, he added.

“One of my friends told me, there’s a

world’s difference between your cattle and mine,” Ferguson said. “He told me, ‘You don’t make a living at the sale barn. You make it at the office. Keep running those Shorthorns. You won’t get hurt.’

The decision to invest in Shorthorns came naturally, Ferguson said. Their calm temperament and strong maternal instincts come naturally, he added.

Ferguson asked his nearby cattle producers for advice as he started to build the foundation for his herd, he said.

While Don was building his Shorthorn herd, his daughter, Kim Ferguson, had graduated from vet school and moved to Arizona, Don Ferguson said.

“I didn’t have any real connections in the Shorthorn association,” Don Ferguson said.

“I was a member because I was registering cattle.”

Everything started to kick off when Kim Ferguson moved back home, Don Ferguson said. The herd was not just building in numbers, but also quality, he added.

“I became responsible for most of the breeding decisions,” said Kim Ferguson, co-owner of Lazy Bar Ranch. “We calve about twice a year, fall and spring, and we do some embryo transfer and AI.” Kim Ferguson changed the whole face of the operation, Arthur said. As a veterinarian, she brought drive and pushed to keep improving the herd, he added.

“Kim and I started going through the herd and keeping what we thought were the better lines of cattle,” Don Ferguson said. “We learned a whole lot about what we needed to work on.”

Breeding season is an opportunity to improve the herd, Kim Ferguson said.

“I’d like to improve the EPDs of our herd,” Kim Ferguson said. “I would like to gain a little more commercial acceptance for our steers.”

In Oklahoma’s climate, Lazy Bar F continues to raise competitive show cattle and balance functional and maternal cows, Don Ferguson said.

“We have kind of gone down more of the show cattle route,” Kim Ferguson said. “The challenge is raising cattle that can perform in the show ring but still be functional in the pasture.”

Improving the genetics is not the stopping point for Kim Ferguson; she intends to focus on pasture management in the years ahead, she said.

“I’d like to make changes to focus on

the health of our farms and the land,” Kim Ferguson said. “My daughter will lead the farm one day, and I want her to have a successful cattle operation to pass down to future generations.”

What started as a small partnership between two friends became a multigenerational operation continuing to evolve through hard work and family values, Kim Ferguson said.

“Building and maintaining the herd had its highs and lows,” Don Ferguson said. “During the drought of 2011, pasture growth declined and feed prices increased.’

“2011 was rough,” Don Ferguson added. “We had to get creative, looking for alternative feeds, and you couldn’t buy hay anywhere.”

The Fergusons refused to give up, Don Ferguson said. Every challenge they faced taught them to prepare for what is to come, he added.

“Growing up, my dad instilled important morals in me,” Kim Ferguson said.

“Hard work, good ethics, and the ability to communicate with others are values I hope to pass down.”

Hard work and good ethics did not stop at Kim Ferguson, she said.

Kim Ferguson’s daughter, Talia, is just

like her mother, Don Ferguson said.

“At 13 years old, Talia works with her show cattle every morning and night,” Don Ferguson said. “We have raised one of the hardest-working girls on the planet.”

From early mornings in the barn working with her Shorthorns to national livestock shows, Talia puts the work in, Don Ferguson said.

“Talia works circles around me,” Don Ferguson said. “We don’t even have to ask her to go to the barn. She just goes.”

Teamwork at Lazy Bar F is part of the family’s values, Kim Ferguson said.

“I handle the books and recordkeeping,” Kim Ferguson said. “My dad keeps the pastures in shape, and Talia never misses a day of feeding.”

Kim’s husband, Mike, also pitches in to help around the farm, especially during calving season, Kim Ferguson said.

“It’s a family effort,” Don Ferguson said. “Everybody has a job, and everyone takes pride in what they do.’

“Watching Talia in the show ring is the most rewarding part of all this,” Don Ferguson added. “She puts a lot of time into her cattle.”

Don Ferguson is not the only one who sees Talia’s work ethic. Arthur sees it too, he said.

“It’s become a family thing,” Arthur said, “three generations involved in the same passion and doing the right things to improve the breed.”

working in the barn to long show days, their foundation started from a simple handshake, Arthur said.

Each generation at Lazy Bar F continues to shape the operation into what the cattle operation is today, Don Ferguson said. They may not measure their success through banners or ribbons, but they measure it through their values they built their herd on, he added.

As our industry continues to evolve, so too must the services, programs, and resources we provide to ensure that Shorthorn cattle remain competitive, profitable, and relevant in today’s beef industry.

Over the past several years, the Association staff and leadership have worked diligently to keep members informed, engaged, and connected to the issues that directly impact their operations. From genetic evaluation improvements and performance data collection to enhanced communication efforts and member services, our team has gone above and beyond to ensure that Shorthorn breeders have access to the latest information and opportunities available within the cattle industry.

One area where the Association has demonstrated leadership is through its commitment to research. Through our collaboration with Simplot and other industry partners, we have invested in important research efforts focused on Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF).

This work is helping identify genetic

factors associated with the condition and provides valuable information that can be utilized by breeders to make informed selection decisions. Research initiatives such as these not only benefit Shorthorn breeders today but also help position the breed for long-term success.

In addition to research, the Association continues to support a wide range of programs that add value for members.

These include genetic improvement initiatives, expanded data collection, youth development programs, marketing opportunities, educational resources, and breed promotion efforts. Each of these programs requires ongoing investment to maintain the quality and level of service that members have come to expect.

As we evaluate the future needs of the Association, it is important to recognize that the cost of providing these services has increased significantly, much like every other segment of agriculture and business. Technology, data management, research partnerships, operational expenses, and program development all require resources to ensure that we continue moving forward rather than standing still.

At the same time, the cattle industry has experienced a period of historically strong profitability. Cow-calf producers have benefited from record or near-record cattle prices, creating opportunities for

increased returns across many operations.

The proposed fee increases represent only a very small adjustment when viewed against the overall profitability of today’s cattle market and the value received through Association services and programs.

These modest increases are not simply about covering costs—they are about investing in the future of the breed.

They will allow the American Shorthorn Association to continue conducting meaningful research, improving member services, maintaining cutting-edge genetic evaluation tools, supporting youth programs, and representing the interests of Shorthorn breeders throughout the beef industry.

Keep Your Foot on the Gas: Making Our Cattle Better As the current Vice President of the ASA Senior Board, I appreciate the opportunity to share with the membership a bit of a board member’s perspective as to activities of the ASA and if I may, my perspective as to the state of our Shorthorn breed within an ever-changing beef industry.

To begin, I would like to share that in my now nearly 5 years as an ASA Sr Board Member I continue to be impressed by the professionalism and positivity of the ASA Staff, the ASA Board of Directors and others that contribute to the function of daily business, the commitment to customer service at the Association office, and the committee members that contribute and offer ideas that make there way to the board room in the form of “action items” that help to form the road map for our breed to follow.

There is absolutely no doubt, if you are in the cattle business today, you are participating in the most dynamic time of beef industry our United States of America has EVER experienced.

Basic economics of a tremendous demand for beef and a tight supply of quality beef are providing the most opportunities for higher margins we have received at the farm gate and in most places through the supply chain.

These positive beef demand conditions have the wheels of the industry moving quickly to continue to enhance the management ease of cattle, consistency of beef quality, cattle performance, record keeping and to further improve beef acceptance in a highly competitive protein market.

As I attend/participate in various committee zoom calls, I am excited about the potential positioning I hear discussed for Shorthorn cattle to fit in this incredibly dynamic beef 44

industry whether that be in the role of development of our tremendous Jr. program, or the fit Shorthorns have as a kingpin of development for British cross females that have the ability to produce easy managing and highly valued finished beef product that will find their way to a packing facility and ultimately to a family that trusts beef ’s nutritional wholesomeness.

At the same time, I am a realist and realize that finding our way as a breed into that highly competitive market places of the beef industry is a constant uphill climb. Regardless of the breed, everyone in the beef cattle business considers their animals to be the “best fit” for this beef industry.

From an ASA board members perspective and having had the privilege to participate in the board interactions be that in formal meetings or zoom call events, I can assure you that your association has their “eye on the ball”!

As a breed, our high participation percentage of DNA submissions provides tremendous opportunities in market positioning, especially in the fed cattle business. You will likely be hearing some very good news in that regard that is a direct result of the tenacity of shorthorn breeders and their dedication to breed improvement by using tools such as DNA submission and evalution as they implement this data into breeding decisions. What a compliment to data collected at the farm level that DNA can provide as we continue to allow these genetic markers to assist in the identification of those animals, we need to identify to both replicate in greater numbers and to identify as inferior and cull.

From my perspective as an ASA Board Member, the focus of policy that enables a continuation of critical information

management, market development by increasing industry partnerships outside our breed and presenting that information to public with an appealing and meaningful message to encourage new business is a constant focus of all members I have the privilege of serving the Association Membership with.

One of the first activities I was fortunate enough to have been a small part of was the most recent strategic planning meeting held post Jr National’s in KC four years ago. Of the many things we discussed, the ASA Board and the ASA Staff identified a number of actions to provide direction and focus for ASA staff and the Association Board of Directors to follow.

Those actions have resulted in events or policy adjustments that have complimented stability within the association and in many aspects has allowed for increases in breed performance.

Perhaps the most important thing the actions identified at that strategic planning meeting provided was the prioritization of a fiscally stabile Breed Association that enabled breeders to do their business without overburdening them financially but also providing an environment that allowed enough profit potential to allow the Association to be helpful in the promotion of Shorthorns for the breeders to still realize the benefits that the ASA provides with regards to the management and integrity of pedigree records, DNA and the continued education of the membership relative to both industry and breed developments.

At that time, it became evident that financial stability required an adjustment in fee structure of services provided by the Association. It also heightened the necessity for ASA Staff to be conservative with regard to daily activities and assist

the board in identifying things that could be adjusted or cut to make the most of the revenue generated from the function of services provided by the association.

As Board members, we dedicate a tremendous amount of time and attention at each of our ASA board meetings, to budgeting and the financial performance of the association relative to forecasted budgets. To the credit of the ASA Staff and Montie’s leadership we don’t get negative surprises. In fact, since my short tenure as a board member our financial position has remained strong due to the conservative approach and realistic vision of our Executive.

Not unlike we as breeders and our reevaluation of our cattle and the business those cattle contribute to, or the ASA as we critically evaluate our systems

contributing to EPD’s and their effect on breed measurement, or the effectiveness of the distribution of information through social media we also must revue the balance of income to the Association and to the responsibilities and the expectations Members have to perform its role on their behalf.

Montie has outlined in this issue some small increases that the current ASA Board unanimously voted to implement as we move into the next calendar year.

These fee increases are not unlike other increases in cost of doing business we all experience in our own operations.

As a Board I feel that each member hopes these minimally impactful at the individual level but feel strongly that as a collective organization these fee increases will continue to allow our American

Shorthorn Association to continue to be fiscally aligned with member needs of services and promotion of this great breed.

To conclude, I am grateful and humbled to have been a part of one of the most rewarding and educational experiences I have had as breeder and as a professional of agriculture. I continue to be increasingly optimistic with regards to the opportunities that exist for the members of the American Shorthorn Association. As always, I welcome the conversations with other members that will allow us all to continue to refine and redefine our rolls for both our breed association and our operations at home!

OrderingDNA Cards

by Wade Minihan, ASA director of shows & member communications As many of us have experienced, mail is taking longer and longer to arrive these days. We have also received feedback that people are failing to receive their DNA blood and/or hair cards due to getting lost in the postal service; which is out of our control. In an effort to help solve the problem, we have updated our DNA card request process.

DNA cards can still be ordered at shorthorn.org, however, there are two options now. The first option is to request nine DNA cards or less. These cards will be processed at the American Shorthorn Association and mailed out from our office. With this request option, we will offer two shipping options, standard USPS or 2nd day UPS with tracking. Cards being mailed by standard mail will be mailed from the

ASA office every Thursday.

The second option for DNA card requests is directly through the NEOGEN website. This process is linked on shorthorn.org to directly order DNA (hair or blood) and ALLFLEX tissue sample kits from NEOGEN. This would be for ten or more card orders. NEOGEN requires a ten-card minimum when ordering hair or blood cards. When ordering cards through NEOGEN, simply type hair card, blood card, or tissue sampling unit into the search bar at the top. Tissue sampling units can only be purchased directly from NEOGEN; not through the ASA. Once you have added/selected your desired amount; you will proceed to the checkout. You will need to create an account with NEOGEN during the

checkout process.

In an attempt to serve our members better, we will now be offering DNA blood and hair cards at our ASA sanctioned shows. Save time and shipping costs by ordering ahead from us to deliver at the shows we attend. You can contact Wade or Cassie prior to the shows, or at the shows to obtain those cards. You can pay for preordered cards when picked up at shows with cash or card, or be billed via your DigitalBeef account.

When sending your DNA samples and form to the lab, we recommend sending with tracking. This will help you, the member, guarantee you know when/ if your sample has been received at the lab.

All animals must be registered as purebred Shorthorn in the records of the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) at the time of the show.

ASA will accept electronic registration papers at ASA sanctioned shows for check-in, unless otherwise stated by the hosting show rules.

All animals must have a birth weight and weaning weight recorded in the registry.

All animals must have a 100K Genomic testing sample submitted and received at the lab by November 1.

The fair/show must adhere to the below divisions for all Shorthorn Shows regardless of entry numbers. Age divisions are not flexible.

The show will be evaluated by one judge. The same judge will evaluate both phenotype and genotype.

Genotypic and phenotypic components will be evaluated as separate proportions in this show. Both genotypic and phenotypic components will have equal parts in the overall tabulation (50% genotypic/50% phenotypic).

Genotypic judging will take place prior to exhibition in the phenotypic portion. During the phenotypic class, the judge will be provided with animal birthdates and placed on phenotype. During divisions and overall championship drive, EPDs will be provided, and the judge will be asked to rank the group of cattle using both phenotype and genotype.

The top two animals in a class will be announced and advance onto the division classes. If a tie occurs in class, EPDs will be provided to the judge.

Females 20 months of age on the day of the show need to have a pregnancy verification signed by an accredited, non-owner veterinarian at the time the female is processed for the show. If verification cannot be produced upon request, the exhibitor is allowed to find a qualified veterinarian to verify pregnancy prior to time of show.

Senior Yearling Females who have calved will show based on age and will show without the calf at side. Cow/Calf pair classes will not be offered.

All Shorthorn cattle are subject to a tattoo inspection, parentage DNA testing, an age inspection and/or females 20 months of age on day of show are subject to a blood test to prove pregnancy if deemed necessary by the ASA. The decision of an examining veterinarian is final.

IMPORTANT: Each of the following classes MAY be broken into multiple classes to accommodate large numbers of entries, but separate classes may NOT be combined into one. For example, there MAY be four “Junior Heifer Calf ” classes, but “Late & Early Spring Calves” may NOT be combined into one single “Spring Heifer Calf ” class.

Class numbers provided below are an example format, each fair and/or show may renumber each class and division as needed.

The Gift of Perspective As my time as AJSA President comes to an end, I’ve been thinking a lot about perspective. It’s easy to get caught up in the next show, the next goal, or the next challenge. We spend so much time looking ahead that we sometimes forget to appreciate where we are right now. But one of the greatest lessons the Shorthorn breed has taught me is to cherish every moment, because the moments that seem ordinary today often become the memories we miss the most tomorrow.

The early mornings in the barn, the long days on the road, the laughter with friends at junior nationals, the conversations with mentors, and even the setbacks that felt disappointing at the time have all become part of a journey I wouldn’t trade for anything. Through this breed, I’ve learned that life isn’t measured by banners or success. It’s measured by the people we meet, the lessons we learn, and all of the memories we get to make along the way. The cattle brought us together, but the relationships and experiences are what truly matter. They remind us to slow down, be present, and appreciate the opportunities we’ve been given.

One of the greatest blessings of my time in AJSA has been serving alongside

my fellow board members. The countless hours spent traveling, planning, laughing, and making memories together have become some of the most meaningful moments of my junior career. We came together because of a shared passion for the Shorthorn breed, but we leave with friendships that will last far beyond our time as juniors. If there’s one thing I know for certain, it’s that I wouldn’t trade the memories we’ve made together for the world. Those moments have shaped me, challenged me, and reminded me of the incredible people this breed brings into our lives As we continue our journeys into summer shows, I hope we all remember to embrace each season of life.

Celebrate the successes, learn from the challenges, and never take for granted the people standing beside you. Time moves quickly, and before we know it, the moments we’re living today will be the stories we’re telling tomorrow.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your AJSA President. This organization and this breed have given me a perspective on life that I will carry forever: cherish every moment, because the journey itself is the greatest gift of all.

After graduation, I hope to use my education to bridge the gap between agriculture and the public by communicating the effectiveness, innovation, and importance of the agricultural industry.

Future plans: I hope to pursue a career in a show management position that blends my passion for livestock shows and youth.

Future plans: I plan to become an agriculture teacher so I can share my passion for agriculture with future generations, help students develop leadership and career skills and make a positive impact on the agricultural community.

One thing you hope to learn during the internship: I hope to work on building my skills in digital marketing and communications. I also hope to strengthen my graphic design abilities and enhance my visual storytelling skills, allowing me to create engaging content that effectively communicates messages to a variety of audiences.

The cattle presented in this sale were of the highest quality and a truly even set to look at. There were outstanding individuals in each group. The pairs were just outstanding as well as the bred females and the open heifer calves. All the consignors are to be commended for bringing a truly top set of cattle for a great event. $17,500 - Lot 8 - Cow/Calf Pair - SFF Mona Lisa Reward LL 202 - A RWM, 2022 daughter of CSF Long Look HC 706 ET and out of CF V8 Mona Lisa Reward 660 ET. At side was a roan, polled heifer born 02-24-2026 sired by PVF Identity 681 ET. What a pedigree on this one. The cow is by a top young sire and the dam’s pedigree needs no

introduction in the breed. A really good, solid pair with the cow destined for the donor pen. Offered by Oler Farm and purchased by Greenhorn Cattle Co of Waynesville, Ohio. $9,500 - Lot 1 - Cow/Calf Pair Martindell Dreams 209. A red, polled 2022 daughter of Gilman’s Big Bank 34H and out of Martindell Dreams 452. At her side was a roan, polled heifer born 02-10-2026 and sired by Studer’s Limitless 15L. athis was a very popular pair in a strong group of pairs.

A beautiful cherry red female with a performance dam in her pedigree. She has a great udder to go with a very desirable body shape. Her calf is really a fancy youngster. Offered by Martindell and purchased by Rowdy Cattle Co of Hazard, Kentucky. $9,000 - Lot 5 - Cow/Calf Pair - L&L Scarlet 04. A red polled 2020 daughter of Muridale Thermal Energy 15A and out of BSG Scarlet 1707 OF 7Y. At side was a red, polled heifer born 01-29-2026 sired by Byland Casino 3WS130. This was the cover girl pair and a really solid pair to see. A deep sided cow with a lot of dimension and a fancy youngster by her side. She has a great pedigree with Taylor Made on her dam’s side. An outstanding addition to any herd. At her side was a R&W, polled heifer born 02-12-2026 sired by SBR Leverage 960L. Another of the top pairs in this sale. This one sired by the popular JW bull and out of a Rolex daughter. Her heifer calf looks to be a really good one.

A RWM, polled November 2024 daughter of CSF Evoution HC and out of SS Myrtle Bo Marie ET selling bred to Gilman’s Basin for a September 2026 calf. This great young female headed a strong group of bred heifers. Sired

by Evolution and out of a great female from the Schrag program. This one will certainly be a leader in her new herd.

Sale Highlights: Lot 36 – Saskvalley Mesa 8M $22,000. The crowd favourite for the day was a roan, stout made Father Time son. He was purchased by a longtime supporter of the sale, Rockdell Shorthorns of Lone Rock, SK. Lot 21 – Bell M Dominion 168N $20,000. This impressive roan Studer’s Kingdom son out of an eye catching, proven female was brought to Saskatoon by the Moellenbeck’s and is heading to an exciting new home at Sunlite Stock Farm of Virden, MB. Lot 20 – Bell M Shoresy 53N $17,500. A paternal brother to the bull above, this flashy made roan bull was circled in lots of books. He was purchased by a Lane Easton of Kennedy, SK. Lot 24 – Muridale Time Keeper 16M - $17,000. This smooth made, calving ease two-year old bull was purchased by Lynda Lucas. She couldn’t fit him in her carry on, so he will be trucked down to his new home at Cheyenne, Oklahoma, USA. Lot 37 – Saskvalley Mint 38M $17,000.
