The Board of Directors took some time to review the 90-day past-due policy. After seeing an increase in overdue accounts, a policy change was enacted, which brought about another change regarding membership renewals. First (as of January 1, 2024): Any past due balance over 60 days will automatically put an account onhold until the full account balance has been paid. As a reminder, this will restrict online access to only being able to pay that balance, as well as no printing of any registration papers is permitted when there is a balance due. Second (effective immediately): Due to the increase in unpaid membership renewals, (i.e. breeders logging in and renewing their membership and not making payment) membership renewals must be paid at the time of renewal in order to gain online/ member access for that calendar year. If a breeder logs in, agrees to renew the membership but then does not pay simultaneously, said membership renewal will be made null and void and deleted the next day.

WHR Breeders

WHR Assessments for 2024 were sent in November. 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2024 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2024.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2024 to an assessed 2024 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months) 2024 ASSESSMENT FEE SCHEDULE: November 1, 2023 - January 9, 2024 $18 January 10 - February 29, 2024 $24 March 1, 2024 and after $30 *Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees.

Send DNA Directly to Neogen As a reminder, breeders can now send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office first. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the office for preprocessing. 3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal 2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number 3. A barcode number for each animal tested Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, (it’s not entirely an automated process) staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to print and send to the lab with samples. Checks/payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

Association Outlook

New Year Responsibilities

A

nother year has passed as we begin 2024. A brand new year and with some new experiences and a few changes - Jan 1st signals the time for renewing our memberships, affiliations, assessments and so on with most organizations. The ASA is no different. Your membership is due for 2024. The assessments for your cow herd which entitles you to free registration rights and one free transfer per assessed animal for 2024 born calves are also due at this time. If your assessments are paid by Jan. 9th, the fee is only $18 per head. On January 10th the fee increases to $24 and will rise again on March 1st to $30. I encourage you to bring your herd inventories up to date and get your assessments done - the savings will be substantial. Please work on this in a timely manner to take advantage of the lower fees. 2024 Memberships are due. Renew your membership in the online registry by clicking “Renew”. Due to some breeders not following through with payment after renewing, a few changes have been made. This year, be prepared to make payment with your credit card when you click the renew button. It will take you directly to the payment platform to pay for your membership which gives you rights to the online registry. Membership must be paid before access is granted to do work in the registry. Due to the increase in receivables over the past year, the ASA Board has approved that as of Jan. 1, 2024, accounts over 60 days past due will be placed on hold until the balance is paid in full. This replaces the 90-day past due grace period before the system denied access for new work. I want to remind everyone that a ruling put in place on Jan. 1, 2022, will affect registering calves born in 2024. 10

shorthorn country • january 2024

The ruling states that all bulls born after Jan. 1, 2022, must be 100K/Parentage DNA tested to register a resulting calf. This impacts those bulls born after Jan. 1, 2022, used as herd sires and/or bred cows whose first calves would be arriving now. To restate: For any calves resulting from a bull born after Jan. 1, 2022, the sire of these calves must be DNA tested for 100K/Parentage before a resulting calf can be registered. I bring this up now because many of you may have newborn calves sired by young bulls born after Jan. 1, 2022. It is time to ensure the DNA testing is done on those sires so you can register the resulting calves when the time comes. Many of you may wonder why this is needed. The increase in parentage testing and 100K testing has identified more animals that do not DNA to the suggested sire. In many cases trying to determine the proper sire is difficult due to the lack of those bulls being DNA tested. If all the sires being used are tested the ability to determine the appropriate sire becomes much higher and helps breeders be able to register these problem calves. Some of you may prefer to avoid this DNA testing, but I assure you it is done to add integrity to the herd book as well as making it easier and in some cases possible to find the proper parentage on animals that may have been mislabeled. As we start 2024 the future looks bright for cattle producers. The market is strong and up considerably for the commercial segment of the beef cattle industry. The demand and value of registered Shorthorn cattle may be even stronger. Sales and activities in our breed have been as robust as I have seen. Strong numbers are coming in for new memberships, which means more buyers and participation in Shorthorn activities in the future. One of the great assets this

breed has is its members or breeders. You are a friendly bunch who welcome new members to the Assocaition with open arms. Most breeders are willing to help new breeders in any aspect they need. This is very important for the progress and future of the breed. Think back to when you may have been the new kid on the block and the help you received from now friends. For those of you who are generational, your parents or grandparents or ancestors did this so you can be part of the Shorthorn fraternity today. We advertise as being “The Family Friendly Breed”. So, as we enter 2024, let us all make a resolution to be positive in our thoughts and comments. Please treat others the way we would like to be treated. Share the passion for Shorthorn with the world and anybody who will listen. In 2024 and beyond, let’s all be Proud to be a Shorthorn Breeder! Happy New Year!

Changes to the Growth EPD Evaluation Our genetic evaluation provider, International Genetic Solutions (IGS), recently made adjustments to the mechanics and models that tabulate the weekly EPD runs. IGS facilitates the largest weekly beef cattle EPD run on the planet. With the growing volume of data entering the IGS evaluation from over 20 worldwide breed associations, adjustments were needed to improve the efficiency of the weekly runs. As data volume increases, time to complete the eval also increases. We used to be able to get our new EPDs every week on Monday afternoon, but that has slid back later in the week over time. The computer power that IGS uses for the tabulations couldn’t keep up with the influx of data from around the globe without some adjustment to the models. Implemented with the run conducted the week of December 11, the changes center around adjustments to the breed comparison tools used within the evaluation, how that comparison data is handled through the evaluation, as well

12

shorthorn country • january 2024

as updates to the EPD bases that are in place. As a true multi-breed evaluation, these comparisons are necessary to the function of the IGS eval and need to be updated from time to time. With these changes to the models, breeders should expect to see changes in their EPD values for BW, WW, YW, and MILK EPDs. While values may change, there is minimal shuffling of where cattle rank for these traits. Changes in EPD values are occurring across all the IGS member breeds with these updates to the model. So what we anticipate you seeing is a quicker, more efficient evaluation run each week with some slight differences in the values of your growth EPDs. Unfortunately, due to the timing of the announcement from IGS and the deadlines for Shorthorn Country, the earliest we could discuss these changes in print comes after the fact with this article. The initial announcement can be found in the December 5 Shorthorn Insider e-mail newsletter. Our partnership with IGS allows us to

bring you the strongest genetic prediction tools found in the beef industry. Our involvement in IGS allows Shorthorns from around the globe (Australia, Canada, and the United States) to all have EPD profiles that are directly comparable to each other. Participating in the cooperative, or any genetic evaluation for that matter, will come with occasional changes as the science teams work to improve the product they distribute to the breed association. I was once told that if you’re trying to make improvements and nothing changes, then you didn’t make improvements. We expect to see improvements in the genetic tools we can offer you with this round of updates from IGS, even if the numbers look a little different. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me (matt@shorthorn. org) to further discuss these new models. Happy New Year!

In the Know

Cassie director of shows & events; Reid customer service specialist

Rounding out the Season As the steam settles from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, Shorthorn breeders once again are set to gear up for a jam-packed January! Our winter shows roll into January just as hot and heavy as the Fall shows do for October & November. As busy as the time seems, your Shorthorn staff is ecstatic to kick off 2024 with a bang! When packing for upcoming shows, I personally advise for warm clothes, a smile and your registration papers! January starts strong with Cattlemen’s Congress returning this year as a Super National Show. The addition of the E.D.G.E. Show will bring excitement to the ring and highlight the best of the best of the Shorthorn Breed. A complete Cattlemen’s Congress schedule is on page 47. The National Western Stock Show (NWSS) sneaks right up on us after Cattlemen’s Congress. Our entries look spectacular this year as NWSS gains

traction following a hiatus period. We have worked with NWSS to ensure our exhibitors have the time they need to travel if attending both Cattlemen’s Congress and NWSS. Please be aware of arrival and check-in times to ensure you are where you need to be. If you find yourself in a pickle, please reach out to our staff. NWSS Schedule can be found on page 47. Wrapping up January, our crew heads south for the Fort Worth Stock Show (FWSS). Unique to FWSS, ownership on open animals must match the exhibitor name on the entries sent to FWSS. This ownership will be evaluated at checkin. The owner and/or exhibitor is not required to be the showman on open show day. Be sure to transfer any animals to the exhibitor prior to the ownership deadline. Also note, our schedule and check-in process for FWSS has changed for 2024. Make note of the new schedule on page 47.

Rounding out our show season, we will head further south to Jackson, Miss. for the Dixie National Livestock Show in February. This is the last point show for the 2023-2024 Show Season, making it a great way to capitalize on point opportunities for year-end awards! Entries for Dixie close on January 26th; a full schedule is located on page 47. As a reminder, show points are uploaded into DigitalBeef. Check over these for accuracy and to see where you stand! We look forward to seeing you soon! It has been a blast travelling to our shows the last few months and we look forward to wrapping up the show season! Should you need anything as you prepare, reach out and we would be happy to assist.

Show Points Show points are on DigitalBeef for your review. The “Show Points” page can be found on the left-hand menu as the last option. Follow the screenshot to get the most out of this tool. Points are uploaded as results are processed by staff following each show. Contact Wade or Cassie if you have any questions.

Maggie 2023-24 Alternate National Bass Shorthorn Lassie Queen

Just go for it! My name is Maggie Bass and I am the 2023-24 Alternate National Shorthorn Lassie Queen. I would like to thank my mom for always supporting me and my travels. I was crowned this past summer at Junior Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa. I have represented the Shorthorn breed by attending state fairs and national shows, including both Kansas and Oklahoma state fairs, Junior Nationals, the American Royal, and NAILE so far. My favorite show has been NAILE where I got to walk on the green shavings for the first time! I had a great experience, even if it was three long days. But I couldn’t have done it alone, I had Mckenna Geeseman (National Shorthorn Lassie Queen) as well as Victoria Thompson (Alabama Lassie Queen). I also attended the American Shorthorn Association Annual Meeting in Kansas City and the National Shorthorn Lassie Annual Meeting in Louisville. A few years ago I was unsure about running for National Queen, but Harley Shelton the 2021-22 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen convinced me to just go for it and I couldn’t have made a better decision. I have met so many wonderful people and made so many connections that I would not have made if I didn’t run for queen.

As well as getting to travel and go places I’ve never been before. So even if you are unsure about running for National Queen I would just go for it because it doesn’t matter if you’re a first generation Shorthorn breeder or a 5th, everyone has to start somewhere.

New Year, Creating the Best You circle. An encouraging talk with a friend or a call to the neighbor down the road asking for help can make a “bad” experience a little bit more manageable. When things like this happen, it’s so easy for all of us to blame ourselves and feel defeated. If our goals aren’t “met”, we feel like we failed. Even though holding ourselves accountable is a great skill to possess, we often forget we’re all human and life isn’t perfect. Psalm 118:24 reminds us, “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it”. I have been told many, many times that a bad day does not equal a bad life. Each day has a purpose, just like you! During this season of change, I encourage you all to set new goals, work hard to pave the way for your future, and enjoy the activities you devote your time to. But remember to be yourself, and that your resolutions do not define you. There is great value in uniqueness and each day, a new opportunity awaits. I can’t wait to see everything the AJSA accomplishes together in 2024! The greatest rewards come from those you achieve with others.

Words of Advice

“Handle success like you handle failure. You can’t always control what happens, but you can control how you handle it.” - Pat Summitt

I can’t believe it’s 2024! Growing up, years like this seemed too far away to fathom and alternatively they’ve come and gone in the blink of an eye. When we think of a “New Year” we think of resolutions, changes we must make, and ways to improve our lives to meet the standards of society. Without a doubt, writing down your goals, an optimistic mindset, and self-motivation are important, especially to youth in the livestock industry. No matter the age of a Shorthorn exhibitor, we all share common interests in progressing our showmanship skills and the quality of our operations. However, the truth is, mistakes are inevitable, and plans don’t always go the way you’d expect. I’m almost positive all of us could share stories about times we’ve left a show upset, been disappointed in a showmanship heifer, or had a blowout on the interstate when your family was already running behind schedule. While it’s never easy, moments like these allow us to prove we can control our actions and reactions as well as recognize the value of having good people in your

NAILE 2023 Shorthorn Show Honoree Dick and Pam Hahn Family

The Dick & Pam Hahn Family in Louisville, Ky., receiving the Shorthorn Show Honoree award.

The Dick Hahn family raises and promotes Shorthorn cattle near Minonk, Illinois. The cattle operation was started by Dick’s father, Robert, Sr., in 1934 with the purchase of his very first beef Shorthorn heifer. Dick, his wife Pam, sons Jeremy, Justin, Aaron, and Matthew, along with their daughter Sara have continued the tradition of raising high-quality Shorthorns. The family operation has a deep history within the Shorthorn industry. In 1974, Robert, Sr. was named a Builder of the Breed by the American Shorthorn Association. In 2006, Dick and family were honored to duplicate the award, also being named Builders of the Breed. In the same year, Dick was named Illinois Shorthorn Breeder of the Year. Throughout the years, Dick served several terms on the Illinois State Shorthorn Association’s Board of Directors as both Secretary and President. Dick also served on the American Shorthorn Association’s National Board of Directors from 20022008 where he served as the Board’s President in 2007-2008. Aaron has been on the American Junior Shorthorn Association’s Board of Directors and worked for the American Shorthorn Association serving many roles. Dick and Pam have always paid great 22

shorthorn country • january 2024

attention to youth programs and the promotion of beef cattle production to future generations. Both have served as 4-H leaders for 30 years and beef show superintendents, guiding and influencing a multitude of students and young people. Sara continues the tradition, currently serving as a 4-H leader and Jeremy has been an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor for over two decades. For 20 years between 1994 and 2014, Dick and his family hosted a livestock judging workout in late September for many Illinois and surrounding states’ 4-H, FFA, college, and university livestock judging teams. As many as 200 students would attend this Saturday allday event to practice judging beef cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats. Dick would organize and gather 12-15 classes for students to practice on and Pam would provide a home-cooked lunch for all that attended. Youth livestock evaluation and their teams have been a very integral part of the Hahn family Shorthorn operation. When they were 4-H members themselves, Dick, Jeremy, Aaron, and Matthew were all selected and competed for the Illinois State 4-H Livestock Judging Team. Jeremy, Aaron, and Matthew were members of Black Hawk East livestock judging teams. Dick,

Jeremy, and Aaron were also members of University of Illinois livestock judging teams. Jeremy coached the Illinois State 4-H team for three seasons, coaching the 2004 team to a National Championship at the NAILE. Their passion for beef cattle evaluation has provided Dick, Jeremy, and Aaron the honor of judging at majors such as the North American Livestock Exposition, National Western Stock Show, The American Royal, and the Canadian Western Agribition as well as dozens of state and regional shows. Beginning in 1996, Hahn Shorthorns have been marketed through production sales, online sales, and private treaty marketing. The operation remains intently focused on the production of elite breeding stock and show heifer prospects. Selection for cattle that are economically efficient as well as attractive are continual priorities. As often as possible, the cow herd and developing replacement heifers are maintained on a strictly roughage diet to develop the low-maintenance traits needed in their operation and by the industry. The dedication to function and eye appeal has led to the development and use of many influential and successful sires and brood cows at Hahn Shorthorns. Born in 1999, DPH No Limits 9931 was a turning point in the direction of type and genetics. No Limits was named Grand Champion Bull at the 2000 Illinois State Fair and a class winner at the NAILE, however, his greatest success was experienced in the pasture as he sired outstanding daughters with muchneeded structural integrity and maternal ability. In the spring of 2004, a set of ET calves from a donor owned with the Bob Duis family produced DPH Contender SP2104. Contender was an extremely successful herd sire prospect in the showring, earning Grand Champion honors at the 2005 National Western and Reserve Grand Champion at the 2005 NAILE. Contender’s influence continues to this day, as he still sires incredible body shape and performance without sacrificing balance and eye appeal. In 2011, Ash Valley Prestige 0665 was purchased from Loving Farms and roamed Minonk pastures for 6 years leaving a tremendous set of easy fleshing, great structured, heavy milking females.

Hill Haven Cognac was brought to Hahn Shorthorns in the fall of 2014 and provided another outcross set of genetics to provide added growth and stoutness. The combination of Contender, Prestige, and Cognac have been foundational to the operation for many years since. Most notably, Prestige’s greatest daughter and current lead donor, Hahn Elizabeth P42B has produced a Reserve Grand Bull at the NAILE in 2018 and a Reserve Grand Heifer at the NAILE in 2021, both sired by Cognac. The bull,

Hahn Supremacy C42E continues to be the senior herd sire at Hahn Shorthorns and Rexlaine Farms. As Dick and family look to the future, young home-raised and marketed sires such as Hahn Chaos and Hahn Popular Opinion, are likely to see heavy use through AI and ET. The continued success in the showring set the stage for Matthew to be named the American Shorthorn Association Herdsman of the Year in 2021. “We are really honored to be recognized by the ASA at the North

American,” says Dick. “Raising, marketing, and showing Shorthorns has been a huge part of our family for a very long time and we hope to continue doing so with our next generation for a long time into the future.” Congratulations to the Dick & Pam Hahn Family for this award!

Lawrence Grathwohl Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year Jake Nikkel & Jaxon Schrag Each year at the North American International Livestock Exposition, Shorthorn exhibitors vote on the Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year. This year exhibitors selected a hard-working duo, Jake Nikkel and Jaxon Schrag of Schrag/Nikkel Show Cattle. Jake first started showing Shorthorn cattle in 2010 locally at county fairs and jackpot shows. He attended his first junior national in 2012 and after his great experience at the National Junior Shorthorn Show, his family decided to focus more on exhibiting and raising Shorthorn cattle. Jake served on the American Junior Shorthorn Association board from 2016-2019, serving as the 2018-2019 president. “It is a pretty neat deal to receive the herdsman award,” Jake said. “But the coolest part is that it is voted on by our fellow competitors and peers in the barn. It means a lot to have the people you look up to vote for you to receive this award. They understand and know what it takes to be successful.” Jaxon is a fourth-generation Shorthorn breeder. He has attended almost every

NJSS since he was born, exhibiting cattle, and competing in contests. He has grown up with many great role models in the breed and hopes he can become someone that people will look up to one day. He has big goals of continuing the progression of the Schrag/Nikkel herd while also making a positive impact on the breed. “It is a great honor to be voted as the 2023 Herdsman of the Year,” Jaxon said. “It makes it even more special I was able to be selected alongside my friend and brother-in-law, Jake, that means a lot. I appreciate all those who voted for us this year.” Jake Nikkel and Jaxon Schrag have been shaped into who they are today because of the connections they have made while growing up in the Shorthorn breed. Two years ago, when Jake proposed to Jaxon’s sister at NAILE, they went from being great friends to officially family. Schrag/Nikkel Show Cattle was then born when both families decided they were stronger together. The logical next step was to merge

each other’s cowherds into one. Since then, Jake and Jaxon have put together two production sales and taken care of too many show heifers to count. Both have their own unique skill sets that only complement each other. If you know Jake, you know that he is a natural-born salesman who can talk to anyone, and if you know Jaxon you know that he will spend all day clipping at the chutes. Jake and Jaxon have a common goal of exhibiting Shorthorns at the highest level possible and will continue to strive to do so for the rest of their lives. They also share the goal of progressing not only their herd but the entire breed while also growing the junior program. The 2023 Lawrence Grathwohl Herdsman of the Year is sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation. Congratulations to Jake Nikkel and Jaxon Schrag on being selected by their peers for this special award. It is well deserved!

News & Notes Change to ASA 90-day Past-Due Policy The Board of Directors took some time to review the 90-day past-due policy. After seeing an increase in overdue accounts, a policy change was enacted, which brought about another change regarding membership renewals. First (as of January 1, 2024): Any past due balance over 60 days will automatically put an account on-hold until the full account balance has been paid. As a reminder, this will restrict online access to only being able to pay that balance, as well as no printing of any registration papers is permitted when there is a balance due.

Second (effective immediately): Due to the increase in unpaid membership renewals, (i.e. breeders logging in and renewing their membership and not making payment) membership renewals must be paid at the time of renewal in order to gain online/member access for that calendar year. If a breeder logs in, agrees to renew the membership but then does not pay simultaneously, said membership renewal will be made null and void and deleted the next day.

These policy changes are an effort to maintain fairness for those members who are paying their fees in a timely manner, as well as keep the financial status of the ASA in good order. These new changes are in effect for every single member – whether junior or senior, WHR or TOC – everyone will be treated equally. We appreciate your continued support of the American Shorthorn Association.

IMPORTANT

ASA

FROM THE

New Rule for Milking Shorthorn/Lincoln Red Dual Registration As of July 1, 2023, all Milking Shorthorn and Lincoln Red cattle that are to be brought into the American Shorthorn Association herd book as dual registered animals must be tested as an AI sire or donor dam prior to herd book acceptance, due to the lack of information available in their online registries.

Update for DNA Testing Starting July 1, 2023, all animals tested through the American Shorthorn Association must have a registration or recorded number to be accepted for testing. This is only a slight adjustment to the current rule, which applies to samples sent directly to the lab. This rule adjustment includes any animal tested – whether the samples are sent directly to the lab or to the ASA office for pre-processing. Also starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will also be incurred for those samples sent to the office for preprocessing. We are trying to encourage breeders to send their samples directly to Neogen, once their DNA submission form is approved and in their hands. If there is an error in the registry holding your animal up from being pushed through as registered, you would need to go the ‘recorded number’ route. In the birth entry screen, you can un-check the ‘Register?” box, re-validate, and commit your animal to the registry as recorded to receive that ‘U’ recorded number.

New Digital Invoicing for ASA I. n an effort to reduce the amount of paper sent out of the office, statements will now be emailed, rather than printed. Please be sure to double-check that you have a correct email on file in the registry. If you wish to continue with the printed version, simply log into your DigitalBeef account and go to the ‘Prefs’ tab to update your Invoicing preference (see screenshot). You can also call the office to make the switch.
