Andy, Brad, Tommy and I have traveled the country over the last few years seeking the BEST of the BEST. We are continuing to do what it takes to improve the ANGUS breed. I think as you look at the offering, you will agree.

Two years ago, we entered the BEEF market. Brad heads that division, GABRIEL PREMIUM BEEF, along with two of our grandkids, Garrett and Payton, and they have done an outstanding job marketing the beef. We have built our own MEAT MARKET in Canton, Texas, supplying beef to the public along with servicing many restaurants as well and shipping to other states.

COMING SOON, we are in the process of finalizing architectural and engineering drawings for an upscale steakhouse and a grill and bar. We love the ANGUS breed and with the addition of the meat market and steak house, we truly can say we produce Angus beef from conception to the table.

INSPECTION OF CATTLE:

Cattle will be displayed on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning before sale, or anytime by contacting Andrew Maupin at 903-497-4307.

HERD HEALTH:

Cattle will be accompanied with proper health certificates for immediate shipment. An updated breeding and calving report will be available sale day and announcements from the auction block will take precedence over all printed material.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

The cattle will sell under the standard terms and conditions of the American Angus Association. All announcements from the auction block take precedence over printed materials.

TRUCKING:

Lathrop Trucking (Randy Lathrop) and Tom Snell (580374-4168) will be available sale day. Cattle may be loaded following the sale, but can remain at the sale site until trucking arrangements can be made or pickup arranged. If you are unable to haul your own cattle, truckers known to be reliable will be on hand to assist you.

All persons attending the sale and related functions do so at their own risk. Welcome to the Annual Gabriel Ranch Sale at their pristine ranch in Central East Texas. Ron Gabriel and his wife Lana continue to create some of the most elite Angus genetics in the southwest. Ron likes his Angus cattle sound, fertile, or highly maternal or they leave, no exceptions. Lana is a true perfectionist, a wonderful woman, and makes everything she touches have her own personal touch on it. Their manager Andy Maupin along with his wife Brandy need no introduction to the Angus world, and they are considered the best in the business, and I concur. Andy’s right hand is Emery, and this girl is a top hand for sure. Ron and Lana are joined again by their son Brad Gabriel and their daughter Dedra and her husband Tommy Goodson. Both families continue to build their elite Angus herds and have chosen to market them all under the Gabriel Ranch brand. Brad has set out in his meat business marketing the Gabriel brand with his family, and they have done an outstanding job in less than two years.

We lead this year’s sale off with a breeding masterpiece in Lot 1A, one that has it all four P’s (performance, phenotype, power and pedigree). This Abel daughter is a true specimen and will most definitely be a sale day favorite. Her maternal sister Lot 1B is a big spread female with top 300 $C, can you say future donor! Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

Accuracy (ACC) is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.

GROWTH

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

MANAGEMENT EPDs

Claw Set EPD (Claw), is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set. The ideal claw set is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced.

Foot Angle EPD (Angle), is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth.

Pulmonary arterial pressure EPD (PAP), is expressed in millimeters of Mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny with a lower PAP score. PAP score is an indicator of susceptibility to high altitude disease commonly experienced at elevations greater than 5,500 feet. Selection for this trait aims to improve the genetic potential for a sire’s progeny to have lower PAP scores thus a lower chance of contracting high altitude disease increasing the environmental adaptability of cattle living in mountain areas.

MATERNAL

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASS

The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences

in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

ANGUS-ON-DAIRY $VALUE INDEXES

Angus-On-Dairy $Value Indexes are bioeconomic selection indexes that allow multiple change in several different traits at once pertaining to a dairy-beef crossbreeding objective. These values are terminal crossbreeding indexes to estimate of how future beef-on-dairy progeny of each Angus sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to beef-on-dairy progeny of other Angus sires if the sires were randomly mated and beef-on-dairy calves were exposed to the same environment.

These indexes were designed as specific crossbreeding tools for Angus bulls being mated to dairy cows. Two indexes have been developed for the dairy market:

Angus-On-Holstein ($AxH), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetic traits weighted by appropriated economics of each Angus sire when mated to Holstein females. The underlying breeding objective assumes Angus bulls will be mated to Holstein females to produce Angus-dairy crossbred calves to be fed and marketed on a quality-based grid. Traits included are as follows: calving ease, growth from birth through the feeding phase, feed intake, dressing percent, yield grade, quality grade, muscling, and height.

Angus-On-Jersey ($AxJ), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetic traits weight by appropriated economics of each Angus sire when mated to Holstein females. The underlying breeding objective assumes Angus bulls will be mated to Jersey females to produce Angus-dairy crossbred calves to be fed and marketed on a quality-based grid. Traits included are as follows: calving ease, growth from birth through the feeding phase, feed intake, dressing percent, yield grade, quality grade, and muscling.

$VALUE INDEXES

$Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. EPDs directly influencing a combined index are: CED, CEM, WW, YW, Milk, HP, DOC, MW, Angle, Claw, DMI, Marb, CW, RE and Fat.
