Transferring Bred Females There is a new policy that all bred females being transferred at ASA must have all the breeding information including name and registration number of sires, type of service, date of service and/or pasture exposure dates to and from, at the time the bred female is transferred to a new owner.

• Effective January 1, 2015, EPD’s will only be available to Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) members of the American Shorthorn Association.

As a reminder, regardless of membership status of owner, an animal registered by a WHR breeder will have access to EPDs for the lifetime of that animal.

American Shorthorn The Association fiscal year ends August 31. We are wrapping up year-end duties and looking forward to the new fiscal year. At this point we can review a couple of major achievements listed for the breed listed. The past year brought many changes: selling the Omaha office and moving to Kansas City, the new registry and website and our Impact Conference in conjunction with the annual meeting. This past fiscal year was packed with action. It will be difficult to provide and equal amount of energy during the upcoming year.

The ASA staff and Board are forging forward, just like the pioneers who built the railroad across our great country. The tracks have been laid and now we want to fire up the Shorthorn Express. It is time to get the train on the tracks and start everyone stoking the fire to build up enough steam to pull the whole train (our breed) right across America (The Beef Industry). If we do this right, we will have new folks jumping aboard as we move down the track. Yes we will need to slow at a few depots along the way to allow some to get on board completely, but the focus is to have the train loaded beyond capacity when we reach our destination. We are the next generation of pioneers of the breed headed toward a bright future!

The Iron Horse changed America and many of those who took advantage of this new form of transportation prospered beyond belief. Advances in transportation have moved our society, from trains to automobiles, airplanes and other technology resulting from space travel. We take these advances for granted in our daily activity.

Just think how we would function without satellites. Satellite TV, the Internet and GPS systems used for travel and farming may not have been discovered without the first step of steam engines and the Iron Horse.

So how does this relate to Shorthorn breed and our industry? The early technology of EPDs has already added the step to Genomics and other advanced possibilities that result from developing ways to measure tiny pieces of information about our cattle and industry. I am not sure any of us are smart enough to predict the future, but I am convinced that we have only scratched the surface of advancements made possible by believing in new technology, much like the Iron Horse!

The ASA Board and staff are stoked for another year of advancement for the Shorthorn breed! All Aboard!!

=What Digital Beef Can Do For You Shorthorn Sire Progeny Test at the University of Illinois The Shorthorn Association is excited to announce a new project; we have partnered with the University of Illinois to conduct a sire progeny test. Three hundred head of commercial cows have been made available to us by the University to breed and gather information on the offspring. The University of Illinois via, Dan Shike, will be collecting data on all of the calves. This data will include: DNA collected at time of birth, gestation length comparison on the AI Sired calves, weaning and yearling data, docility scores, carcass data and feed efficiency. All progeny will be fed out by the University of Illinois and then harvested. The number one goal of this trial is to have the opportunity to do it year after year. We had the opportunity to select 15 bulls from our breed to use for this Sire Test. The bulls were nominated to us and then selected on the following criteria devised by Patrick Wall and ASA staff. The criteria was then approved by the Commercial Acceptance Committee and the Genetic Evaluation Committee chair and vice chairmen. (see selection criteria to the red box on the right) The first requirement is a direct reflection of the desires of the University of Illinois and ASA. Though all of the females in the trial are mature cows, progeny must hit the ground with no assistance and have solid growth thereafter.

Due to the relatively low accuracy of carcass EPDs in the Shorthorn breed, strict requirements for carcass traits were not put in place and were only reviewed for red flags. The sire test is really a proving ground for those EPD’s, so a more wide-open tactic is better.

The third requirement will mitigate any risk of propagating genetic anomalies, poor performers, undesirable traits, etc. Research suggests that 16 calves is enough information to find any undesirables, usually producing EPD accuracies above 0.30. The final requirement also awards producers who religiously submit performance records.

This approach uses individual EPDs for the criteria.

The profit potential for the research institution performing the trial must remain a high priority when selecting sires. These requirements not only offer risk management for both parties, but also attempt to put Shorthorn bulls in a positive light as a real option for use in a commercial crossbreeding system.

SELECTION CRITERIA 1. Bulls should rank in the top 60% of the breed for CED, WW, and YW EPD’s.

2. Carcass EPDs were reviewed for ‘red flags’ on a case-by-case basis. The goal: Top 70% of the breed for REA, MB, and FT.(CW requirements will be captured by growth EPD’s.)

3. The highest overall EPD accuracy will be used to determine bulls utilized in the trial that are “borderline” for meeting the minimum standards.

Studer Shorthorns Celebrates 100 Years

“My grandpa, Ben, registered his first Shorthorn cattle in 1916,” said Dale Studer, the third generation of Studer Shorthorns. “First a white cow and then a roan. From then on our family had Shorthorns.”

In 1960, at only seven years old, Dale began following his father, Nate, around the barn to help him bring in the nurse cows. By 1965, Dale began going with Ben to state fairs and national shows to help him.

“I bought my first heifer in ’68 from Bert Hanson,” Dale said. “It was always Shorthorns every single day after that for me. From then till now it will always be Shorthorns for me.”

This is where Dale’s love continued to grow and develop for Shorthorns.

He was able to learn from his Father, Grandfather, brother Mike and brother Rich first-hand what it meant to have a love for the Shorthorn breed. At that time, Nate started phasing out of the showing and started passing it onto the

boys to do. When Mike came home from the army he was in charge of caring for the Shorthorns. Shortly thereafter, Rich left for Vietnam to serve his country. Mike and Ben took over the breeding decisions in the herd from 1960-1975.

Studer Shorthorns is a family operation built on generations of hard work, faith and love that has made a foundation for the future generations.

“There was 757 t-posts from Anita’s house to mine,” Dale said. That was 2.5 miles. We got married in 1980 and started our family with Nathan and Kaisha while we lived in our first home.

She is the love of my life and the reason I am able to keep raising Shorthorns today.”

Dale said farming was rough in the early 80s and by 1985 they moved to Hamilton, Texas, to work at Riverside Farms. His brothers remained in Wesley and was able to keep a few Shorthorns with them.

“We stayed in Texas for about six years and actually had three kids born there,” Dale said. “Ashley, Austin and Sarah.”

Dale and Anita moved back to Iowa in 1991 and ended up in Creston, the same town they have been since they moved back to Iowa. The kids, Nathan, Kaisha, Ashley, Austin and Sarah, got involved in 4-H and started showing.

Nathan bought his first two show heifers from Jordan Acres when he started showing in 1993.

“We haven’t missed the Iowa State Fair since I started showing in ‘93,” said Nate Studer, fourth generation of Studer Shorthorns. “We started where dad left off attending several Midwest state fairs, as well as many state and national junior shows. It was certainly something our entire family was privileged to grow up around.”

This tradition still remains today and they will be taking 10 head to state fair this year.

As the Studer herd grew in numbers and quality in the early 2000s they joined in their first production sale with Genetics Online in Eastern Iowa.

Soon after they joined with the Loudon family in the Generations of Exellence sale located closer to home. In 2005, Studer’s said they really made an effort to expand their marketing and

promotion of quality bulls to seedstock and commercial producers. They brought in genetics from the North in Canada, to provide something different to the herd.

“In order to sustain the herd you had to promote the breed to Purebred and Commercial breeders,” Nate said. “The commercial cattle market is the biggest segment of customers for any seedstock operation and we needed to provide consistent and reliable traits that appealed to this market as well. You couldn’t just sell to one or the other, we had to get genetics that both parts of the industry would see as beneficial.”

Bringing in the changes in genetics in 2005 was one of the biggest changes at Studer. Dale said there was a separation in showing and commercial and with a market based around the commercial industry.

“In the Midwest there was a need for cattle to be more efficient,” Dale said.

“They had to perform on less resources. with grass acres dwindling and creating higher input costs. It was important to think about frame size and being sustainable with what acres we had for the cattle.”

Studer Shorthorns maintains their herd with managing forage through rotational grazing on 600 acres of mostly fescue pasture, which can be a

challenging forage, in itself, for the northern imported cattle.

In 2010, opportunity provided, that they move to a new sale site on the home farm. The name Family Legacies was born over the kitchen counter at Dale and Anita’s house as they tried to decide what type of name was fitting for Studer Shorthorns. This year will mark the 6th Family Legacies Sale and will be the celebration of 100 years in the Shorthorn business. The rolling hills of Southwest Iowa contain a heritage built on five generations that is still going strong today.

In the Fall of 2014, at breakfast after church one Sunday morning, the Studer guys began discussing how they could get their bulls presented to a broader audience, expand their marketing’s, and concentrate on a promotional event for their potential clients. The Don’t You Think It’s Time Online Bull sale was born and started in February 2015. As one might imagine, this was a little new type of marketing for Dale, but with the encouragement of the younger generation the sale was a great success and sold bulls to 8 states. They were one of the first ones in the breed to have an online bull sale.

cows with 600 acres of pasture. They have mostly winter and early spring calves from January to April.

“We are excited for the future of the breed, with the potential to become a valuable genetic asset to the industry, by focusing on the positive impacts that Shorthorn cattle can provide and diversifying our customer base.” Nate said.

Family is a big part of Studer Shorthorns and as Dale and Anita’s children have gotten older their family continues to expand. Their children are always quick to step-up and help at shows and sales.

Nate, Jenny and Brock live Northwest of Creston and are active in the day to day operation at Studer Shorthorns.

Ashley, Chance, Kyzer and Landry make their home in Wiota, Iowa and have a show cattle and show pig operation. They continue the tradition of Studer Shorthorns with cows in their own herd. They have an annual Fall Sale each September.

Kaisha, Chad, Drew and Cayson live in Des Moines, Iowa and stay active with traveling and attending sporting events with their kids.

Austin currently lives in Ankeny, Iowa and works for Dupont Crop Protection as a Technical Sales Agronomist.

Sarah is the youngest and lives in Seasboro, Iowa and is a Labor and Delivery Nurse at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Austin and Sarah continue to maintain cows of their own in the main cowherd.

The fifth generation of kids (Kyzer, Brock, Cayson and Landry) are starting to be active on the farm and will continue to carry on the legacy of Studer Shorthorns.

Studer Shorthorns have received many recognitions over the years, but one nearest to their heart has been named Builder of the Breed twice.

Once in 1969 with grandfather, Ben and again in 2000 with the Dale Studer Family.

“God, Shorthorns and family is all I have ever known,” Dale said. “I wake up and its Shorthorns. That is how it will be for the rest of my life.”

“I would like to dedicate the last 100 years to my Grandfather Ben, my Father and Mother, Nate and Imogene, my late Brother Tom (Stub) and his family and my late brother Richard and his family.” =

I can’t believe I have already been working at ASA for about three months now. My time here has already flown by so fast and I have enjoyed every minute. I have kept really busy in the office and traveling which always makes it seem to go faster.

My first National Junior Shorthorn Show was a whirlwind of learning and meeting everyone I possibly could. I had so much fun getting to know the junior board and junior members as well as the volunteers that helped make it a great event. I am so excited for next year and working with the junior board to plan for Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I also had a great time in California at the KEY Conference getting to know the junior board even more as I begin taking over as the director of youth activities.

This board has been amazing to work with so far and I can’t wait to see how this first year is going to go. They are an incredible group of kids that work hard to make this an awesome association.

As part of my position as the director of marketing and communications I will take every opportunity to learn. At the end of July, I attended the Agricultural Media Summit that is crop and livestock media professionals from all across the United States. This conference gave me

the opportunity to network with other industry professionals. I also attended sessions that will help in story writing, photography, design and more. It was a learning experience that I can bring back to ASA to help me improve every day.

I love my job…my career…and I can’t wait for what the future holds with the ASA and the AJSA. =

=News & Notes Farewells Robert (Bob) Henry Gordon, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully with family by his side July 29, 2016, Boissevain, Manitoba. Bob was born November 13, 1932, in Oak Lake, Manitoba to the late Henry and Ella (Ronberg) Gordon.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joyce of Boissevain; his children Lois (Blair) McRae, Brandon, MB; Shirley Kaufman (BC Derrow), Mt Sidney, VA; Sheila (Kevin) Jensen, Courtland, KS; B. Lynn Gordon, Brookings, SD; Bruce (Kindra) Gordon, Whitewood, SD.; ten grandchildren Brett and Melissa McRae, Cole Kaufman, Brady, Brooke and Ben Jensen, Bridger, Danika, Matea, and Bennett Gordon; brother Wayne Gordon and sister Cheryl Brown both of Souris, MB. Growing up in the 30s, Bob loved the country and farm lifestyle, 4-H, and at an early age he had a dream of becoming a registered livestock breeder. In 1946, Bob exhibited his first steer at Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in Brandon and continued showing there for more than four decades later showing at Denver, Chicago, Toronto Royal, Ag-Ex, Canadian Western Agribition, World Angus and Hereford Shows until his retirement.

Bob’s family moved to Souris, MB in 1955. He married Joyce (Honeyman) of Hayfield, MB in 1959. Bob and his brother Wayne formed Kinnaber Cattle Company, establishing a Shorthorn operation. Bob took a risk purchasing a large framed white Shorthorn bull, “TPS Coronet Leader 21st” in 1963 at

the Polled Shorthorn Congress, Omaha, NE — a bull who generated a new era in the Shorthorn breed. Bob was named “Builder of the Shorthorn Breed” in 1970 by the Shorthorn Country and American Shorthorn Association. He was instrumental in forming the Canadian Shorthorn Lassie Organization and president and director of the Manitoba Shorthorn Club. The Shorthorn days were exciting times for Bob, leading the Gordons to become regular suppliers of Shorthorn bulls to large American Ranches. Kinnaber won three consecutive Grand Champion Females and two Reserve Grand Champions between 1969 and 1971, at the esteemed National Western Stock Show in Denver (all sired by Leader 21st) and two Champions at the 1968 and 1969 Chicago International. Bob also judged many livestock shows including Agribition, Toronto Royal, 4H achievement days and U.S. state fairs.

While serving on the Manitoba Cattle Producers board, Bob and fellow cattlemen initiated the Douglas Bull Test Station in the late 60s. In 1969, he served as the first president and founding partner of Bar- 5 Simmentals, Brandon, MB. Bob initiated the importation of Simmental cattle from Europe.

Achilles Cattle Co. hired Bob as manager to promote and sell Simmental semen all over the world.

In the 70s, the Hereford herd was established when his children’s love for showing cattle begun. While serving as director of the Canadian Hereford Association, he initiated the formation of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association (CJHA) hosting the inaugural youth event at Kinnaber in 1979.

Bob was intrigued by the Angus breed and developed a small herd in the 80s.

His experience with multiple breeds lead him to be named Sire Selector and Manager of the Beef Program for

Western Breeders/Alta Genetics, Balzac, AB, in 1985 selecting beef sires for the North American market for 13 years.

Bob was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1995. In 2007, Bob and Joyce were inducted into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame for their contribution to agriculture and the beef industry.

In 2003, Bob and Joyce wrote, “A Cattleman’s Walk Down Memory Lane”, a book chronicling their lifelong experiences in farming and livestock industry.

Bob and Joyce retired to Boissevain in 2008. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, father-and-mother-in law Findlay and Rosella Honeyman and brother-in-law, Keith Honeyman.

Bob’s family will remember — “A true stockman never dies; he's just selected by the best judge of all.”

Brothers Zackary Winters and Bo Winters have been members since we were kids. And both of them and our wives Kristy and Brittany had their first girls in January and April Kendy Mae and Elivia Shyanne and they plan to bring both up in the breed.

Simpson Honored as Shorthorn Progressive Breeder. Dr. William Simpson, Lazy 8 Ranch, Eastland, Texas was honored as the Progressive Breeder of the Year by the Texas Shorthorn Association. The award was presented June 18 during the annual meeting in Fort Worth.

Dr. William and Michelle Simpson started with Shorthorn steers in 2007 as show calves for their children. The herd quickly expanded with cows bred to Purple Eclipse and Double Stuff with an emphasis on producing competitive show steers. In 2008 they started acquiring Shorthorn and Maine-Anjou cows with an emphasis on quality breeding stock and Lazy 8 Ranch was born. The herd presently numbers over 85 head of solid producing cows. The operation has greatly increased their productivity with the use of artificial insemination, embryo transfer and IVF. They have added many high capacity recipient cows and cooperative producers to their program. Their cattle have been very successful in the pasture and in the show ring with wins at major shows in Texas and Arizona. In addition to private treaty sales, the firm has sold cattle through Texas Shorthorn Association sponsored sales.

In addition to being a rancher, William Simpson is a general surgeon and chief of staff at Eastland Memorial Hospital. He is a director of Eastland County EMS and serves on the first department. He is president of the Eastland Ag Boosters and vice president of Eastland County Livestock Raisers Association. A director of the Texas Shorthorn Association, he has chaired the state sale committee.

The Simpsons have five children – Lindsey Hallman (Mrs. James) of Eastland; William (Bubba) Simpson III of Clyde; Courtney, a 2016 graduate of Oklahoma Sate University; Jacob, a 2016 graduate of Eastland High School; and Ashley, a junior at Eastland High School where she is president of her FFA Chapter; and two granddaughters – Lelia and Emmalee. The family attends First Baptist Church in Eastland. = Texas Shorthorn Association 2016 Pioneer Breeder of the Year. Don W. Lewis, Trenton, Texas, got into the Shorthorn business in 1983 because of his children. The first Shorthorn purchased, a steer named “Big Tex”, was champion Shorthorn steer at the 1984 Fort Worth Stock Show. The first female 3F Miss Seal, was purchased from Billy Joe Fischer, McCloud, Oklahoma in 1985. This was the beginning of 3L Shorthorns. The original herd bull, JLJ Maverick, was purchased

in 1988 in partnership with Bill Rasor.

Top cow families include a Cumberland, AF Topsy, 14L, Double Radio, who was champion at San Antonio, and Miss Double 14L, who is their lead donor cow. 3L Shorthorns currently run 40-60 cows. The firm utilizes successful A.I. and ET programs and like to calve in the spring because it’s easier on the cows.

Don Lewis was born in Denison, Texas although his parents lived in Oklahoma. He studied drafting at Southeastern Oklahoma University. He was founder of Accurate Automatic Manufacturing, a machine shop that today employees about 45 people. He designed and patented a “swivel” for car washes. He is semi-retired from the machine shop. He loves to hunt; especially quail and wild turkey.

Mr. Lewis, high late wife Barbara,

and their three children Tracie, Chris and Kyle, lived in Allen, Texas. He was a founding member and past president of the Allen Sports Association, a youth softball organization. He also served on the Allen City Zoning Board. In 1996 the family moved to the farm at Trenton, Texas. He served on the East Fork Sports Association (youth softball) in Trenton. He is an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Trenton.

Don. W. Lewis has been a member of the Texas Shorthorn Association since 1988. He served as a director in the early 2000’s. Both his sons, Chris and Kyle, as well as all six grandchildren, Ashley and Wade McCroan, Tyler, Jordan and Garrett Lewis and Julia = Lewis Brown, have showed Shorthorns.

Are You in the Bull Market?

This article may seem several months early for many cattle producers in the Upper Midwest; the combine and grain dryer demand a lot more attention than the cow herd this time of year. However, early fall is actually the most opportune time to evaluate bull power, even if you don’t act on it until next spring. In many cases, the decision is quite easy and can save you significant time and money.

Here are a few simple evaluation tips: Step 1: Pull the bull. This may seem overly mundane, but bulls that remain with cows past the desired breeding season often exit the farm far quicker than they deserve. If cows are open after 90 days with a bull, it’s likely her fault, not his. There’s no need for a bull to chase a cystic cow every 10 days, risking injury to both parties. On the other hand, if a number of cows are still cycling after the bull comes home, then the problem is entirely different. A semen check (BSE) after the bull arrives home is a good idea to diagnose the problem and save feed costs from a potentially sterile herd bull.

In any case, pulling the bull early is a sound management decision. If the bull will be used again for a fall calving herd, a 90-day rest period is a good idea to allow him regain weight and recharge his sperm count. This also prevents those “straggler” calves that get sorted off and discounted on sale day.

Step 2: Look at him. Again, an extremely ordinary step, but one that is crucial to complete right after he comes

off cows. Where’s the first place to look?

Joints. If a bull shows signs of swelling or inflammation in his hocks or knees, it may subside after 30 days, but it will likely get worse as the bull ages. If it hurts too much to service a cow, he won’t. Bulls that have problems with mobility should be replaced, but their issues are more difficult to notice after he has laid by the round bale for two months. The more obvious critique of the bull is sometimes where mistakes are made: How thin is he? In some cases, thin bulls simply don't fit the environment, and culling is necessary. However, in some multi-bull pastures, the thinnest bull is the one that bred all the cows!

Some of this is natural pecking order, but DNA parentage testing is the only way to truly evaluate it. Sire verification of replacement heifers can be a very useful evaluation and management tool for minimal cost. In any case, be careful not to give the fat, lazy bull a free pass at the expense of the bull doing all the work.

Step 3: Grab the calving book. As you wait for the next hopper load or sit in line at the elevator, study the calving book. If the sire is known, were the calves vigorous at birth? Was the calving ease acceptable? If birth weights were collected, were they good enough to try the bull on heifers? There’s a number of things to evaluate prior to pushing down the scales at weaning. If you are keeping daughters back, the bull better meet your expectations. If the bull has been

around awhile, multi-year comparisons may show a bull’s tendencies, good or bad. If you don’t have a calving book, consider it before the next calf hits the ground. At the very least, recall back to the calving season. What went wrong or right? Could a new sire fix some of the woes?

Step 4: Get him off the feed bill. If the decision was made to cull a bull, there’s no reason to let him destroy your $400 bale ring! You have better things to do than flip that manure covered feed bunk back over so you can feed him every day. Pound price for cull cows and bulls operate under the same supply and demand curve as everything else. If you haul your bull to town when everyone else does, price goes down. Unless he is gaining a tremendous amount of weight for little to no cost, the economics don’t work. Save the feed resources; invest in a better bull in March.

The bins will be full in short order and the combine parked once again.

The bawl of weaned calves will annoy you, but the check in hand somehow erases that from memory. Now is the time to make sure your herd bulls are earning their keep. New bale rings are expensive =

For one week this summer, the Minnesota State Fairgrounds was filled up with red, white, and roan animals and some of the best people in the beef industry! Shorthorn Junior Nationals was an unforgettable one as always.

First off, the Minnesota juniors did a fantastic job hosting this event and deserve the shout out! Whether it was helping out with daily activities or passing out pizza the Minnesota crew was always hustling around. Kudos to them.

All of the events ran smoothly from the mentor/apprentice to the all the various contests to the show itself. It takes a special group of people to do the kind of things needed to make an event like this run smoothly!

Second off, this week was a special week for me. We faired well in classes

and all that but that is not the reason it was a special week. From my first Junior National in Grand Island, Nebraska, I set out on a goal. It had been a goal that I worked very hard to achieve and it was this week that it happened. I made it on the AJSA board. It is a true blessing for me and I’m very excited to work with some great people and bring a fresh set of ideas to an already spectacular event.

I’m looking forward to the many opportunities that become of this position.

There are many events coming up soon. The Leading a Legacy sale is happening October 15 at Sullivan’s Farm in Dunlap, Iowa, and we are very excited about this years fundraiser. This sale is our biggest fundraiser event of the year and we hope to see everyone there.

=An Aussies Perspective First Impressions My first month in Australia is coming to an end, and I’ve finally got a chance to sit down and think back to these past few weeks. My first impressions of Australia are a bit different from what I expected, but they are just that—different. My dad has always described other cultures as “not better, not worse, just different.” That phrase pretty well sums up my experiences thus far. Many of my expectations were set by what I had read from previous Ambassadors, but while the last few years have been filled with stories of drought conditions, this year they have had plenty of rain. This, combined with an increased demand for Shorthorn cattle, has many people filled with hope and good spirits.

After a few days in Sydney, I was picked up by Lane Evans and I rode with him to Tamworth. I spent the weekend with him visiting studs such as Kingsley Vale and Nagol Park. Nagol Park imported a bit of BISS Element 79 semen, and it was interesting to see their first crop of calves from him. I then met Trent Johnstone of Trojon Shorthorns, and stayed with him for a few

days where I got to see a fair bit of Trojon and Ronelle Park Shorthorns. Sadly there wasn’t enough time for me to see their mature cowherd, but I’ll be going back later. My next host was Kilkee Shorthorns—Jonathan Tink and Family.

They live in Orange, and their farm is just outside of town. Their cattle are quite different from the majority of Australian cattle, both in pedigree and type, but that’s what works for them. Jonathan is a very experienced fitter, and he taught me about torching sale cattle. I spent a couple extra days with Jonathan to drive down the coast and see some more country. There was a nice change of scenery around Moss Vale, where the environment is more like a rainforest. After Kilkee, I spent a few days with Nic Job at Royalla. They had an impressive group of two-year-old bulls that will be offered in their on-farm sale next month, and I was able to help them with photographing and clipping the sale bulls while they were putting together their catalog.

was fortunate enough to sit in on a Thousand Guineas producer meeting.

Thousand Guineas is a Shorthorn branded beef program designed to bring a premium for quality grain-finished Shorthorn beef. The program has only been in place for about three months, but it has been very well received by vendors and consumers. The restaurants that have trialed it have had very positive feedback, and Norman’s Hotel will be running a promotion on it during the Brisbane Royal Show. At the producer meeting we got to enjoy a Thousand Guineas steak, and it is definitely a quality product. It will be interesting to see how the product grows once restaurants put it into their regular menu. =

Juniors Unlock Potential at KEY Conference in Sacramento, California

by Abbey Martin & Taylor Wilkins The annual KEY Conference is a great way for the older junior members of AJSA to learn more about different parts of the agricultural industry around the U.S. This year 13 juniors met up in Sacramento, California for two days of industry tours, set up by ASA Director, Hugh Mooney.

A majority of the attendees arrived in California, Wednesday July 27, and had the opportunity to travel the two plus hours from inland California to Half Moon Bay State Beach. The day was much colder than expected and the water freezing, but many braved the cold temperatures for a time and had fun playing ultimate Frisbee to warm up. The final attendees arrived late Thursday evening and all were ready to roll early Friday for the first official day.

First stop on the farm tours was The Fishery. Located outside of Galt, California this fish farm incorporated 800 acres and raises catfish, white sturgeon, largemouth bass, and silver carp.

Fish are live hauled to fresh fish market in the state at around one pound in size.

The group arrived at the end of catfish spawning season and were able to see all stages of life from eggs to years old catfish. There was even a group of eggs that hatched during the tour. Van Warmerdam Dairy down the road from the fish farm was the second stop of the day. Peter Van Warmerdam, the second generation dairy farmer gave a rundown of daily operations and explained their process of using recycled water throughout the operation. A little over 1,000 cows are milked twice a day.

From there the group traveled to Orchard Machinery Corporation’s main

office to get an overview of the different machines used to harvest nuts and fruits from trees. Starting out by one man wanting to develop a better way to harvest from trees, their tree shaker is now exported around the world to 14 different countries. Juniors ended the day at Dillibo Livestock. After walking the pasture looking at the Shorthorn herd the group was able to relax and enjoy good food.

The second day started out at VA Farms, the largest rice farm in the state of California. This operation grows two types of rice that are commonly known as sticky rice and sweet rice. Both varieties are used in Asian dishes, sticky rice being primarily used with sushi and sweet rice is used to make mocha. The group was able to see both varieties in different stages of growing. The fields have around 5 inches of water coverage at all time until it is drained for harvest.

Growing season begins in March and harvest occurs in the fall. For lunch the group got to experience the famed west coast burger chain In-N-Out. Dessert was at Stephens Farmhouse, where the group was served fresh baked pies before touring the orchard. Prunes and peaches were picked straight off the trees and taste tested by the attendees. Albiana Farms hosted a relaxing evening of swimming, corn hole, and fun times for the juniors to bond.

Even though it only lasted just a few days, the juniors were able to create some new friendships and gain an immense amount of knowledge of Agriculture in the Sacramento Valley. =
