=Junior Corner Reflection and Change I would like to speak on the behalf of the AJSA board and welcome everyone to a New Year. With only being a month into 2014 it’s safe to say that January has been the best month so far. For everyone who has made a New Years resolution my only advice would be to take a chance and stay motivated. Everyone’s resolution usually includes some type of change. The only way to change is to do something you have never done. Staying motivated can come from even the

smallest thing that inspires you. This could be seeing the first calf of the year hit the ground with no assistance, winning a class during Junior Nationals, getting more involved in contests outside of the show ring, or even just meeting new people from other states. My resolution last year was to become more involved and meet new people. I was able to achieve this with two amazing opportunities through the Junior American Shorthorn Board and FFA. I
never would have guessed how much of an impact they would make on who I am. My new resolution is to build better friendships and enhance my college career. I believe that to achieve my goal I will need a detailed plan and stay motivated. Just remember it’s a new year, which means new beginnings, just stay motivated. “People often say that motivation doesn’t last well, neither does bathing… that’s why wee recommend it daily,” Ziz Ziglar. =

=New & Notes Farewell Tribute Don Stout, 78, of Kremlin, Okla. He was born November 11, 1935, to Carroll and Irene York Stout in Lambert, Okla, and passed away December 21, 2013, in Enid. He grew up on the family farm and was raised in the Friends Church. He graduated from Lambert High School in 1953. An active FFA member, he was awarded the FFA American Star Farmer. He attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University for two years. He later graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1957 with a degree in animal husbandry. He married Pat Hays in 1957 in Enid. He was a County Extension Agent in Brown County, Kansas, for several years after graduation. He and Pat started their own farming and ranching business in 1962. They specialized in purebred shorthorn cattle and raised and showed three national champion bulls. Don’s keen cattle philosophy impacted the Shorthorn breed worldwide, with their stock sold as far away as Australia. He was a member of American Shorthorn Association and Oklahoma Shorthorn Association. He served on the board of directors for both. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Pat; one daughter, Debbie Adriance and husband Al of Kansas City; one son, J. David Stout and wife Vicki of Wake Forest, North Carolina; one grandson, Cody Stout; two brothers, Bob and wife Helen of Hooker, Okla, and Bill and wife Evelyn of Cherokee, Okla; and many nieces and nephews. James Elliott "Jim" Bondurant, 84, of Union City, Tenn., formerly of Hodgenville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Union City Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was born October 19, 1929, to James Willie and Zula Powell Bondurant. He grew up in Brandenburg and graduated from Meade County High School in 1948. From childhood on, Jim was a hard worker and held many jobs during his early years in Meade County, including milking cows at a dairy before and after school every day, working on a barge on the Ohio River and helping hang wall-
16
paper. His favorite job was driving his granddaddy, James Henry Bondurant, around the area beginning at about age 13. In 1952, he married Katherine "Kaye" Keyes of Lexington and they started a family with the births of their two children, Jane Elizabeth and James Bourbon Bondurant. Bondurant worked in the banking field then began a full-time practice of law in Hodgenville in 1962. He was elected as state representative in 1963 and during his second term worked diligently to pass the Kentucky Civil Rights Act which gave every Kentuckian the right to attend school, eat at restaurants, stay in motels and enjoy other civil rights regardless of their color, creed, race or religion. In 1964, he and others chartered a new bank in Elizabethtown, originally called Citizens Bank of Elizabethtown which now is First Citizens Bank. He was on the bank's board of directors for 45 years, serving as chairman of the board for many of those years. He served on LaRue County Fair Board, was attorney for LaRue County Board of Education and was active in Hodgenville United Methodist Church and the Democratic Party. He also served on the board of directors of Methodist Evangelical Hospital then after its merger, on the board of Norton Hospital, where he chaired the ethics committee. In 1985, he was elected District Judge for Hart and LaRue counties and continued in this position until his retirement. In January 2000, the Chief Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court appointed him as the first senior judge

in Kentucky. As senior judge, he held court throughout the state and served on various courts including district courts, circuit courts, probate courts and the Kentucky Court of Appeals. One of his most rewarding positions was as chairman of the board of trustees for Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, where he contributed greatly to its operations and expansion. He joined its board in 1979 and held many positions until his recent illness. The college awarded Bondurant an honorary doctorate degree for his services as well as a distinguished service award. Jim was a Shorthorn Breeder, owning and operating Beau Monde Farm in Hodgenville, Ky. He served as Vice President of the ASA Board. He was very active in the Kentucky Shorthorn Association serving as President and legal adviser until his retirement. Upon retirement, he and Kaye moved to Union City, Tenn., where he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Peggy Penas; and a brother, Joe Bondurant. He is survived by his wife, Kaye Bondurant; a daughter, Jane Bondurant; a son, Jim Bondurant and his wife, Mary Nita; a grandson, Dylan Bondurant and his wife, Courtney; a granddaughter, Katie Creech and her husband, Jeremy; four great-grandchildren, Rylan Ali and Bo Bondurant and Charlie and Hattie Grace Creech; and three sisters, Alice Scott, Mary Jones and Eleanor Newman. =

Sexed semen creates building blocks By Clifford Mitchell
Cattlemen are resourceful individuals, who by nature have the will power to help overcome challenges along the way. No doubt the fickleness Mother Nature has displayed the last few years has created an even bigger gap in the fence. Rebuilding the cow herd is no simple task. Females must meet quality standards, be environmentally adaptable and come equipped to produce calves that will perform all the way through the production chain. Combination cattle that can multi-task could be few and far between and are often valued at a level that causes sticker shock for some. For some outfits, sexed semen can create a female that is very desirable from industry standards. “We need to rebuild the cow herd with quality females. We can’t lose sight of who the real customer is. Sexed semen is a way to create that product,” says Heath Kohler, ranch manager, Ratcliff Ranch, Vinita, Oklahoma. “Sexed semen is a good option to create only one sex and it’s about 95 percent accurate,” says Dr. Robert Wells, consultant, The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Ardmore, Oklahoma. The calf market continues to be at a very favorable level and production

costs have eased with a decrease in feed costs. Weather still seems to be the deciding factor in some areas weather to expand or stay at current numbers. “The demand for top quality replacements will increase with continued winter precipitation. This not only helps winter pasture, but also puts moisture in the soil to kick off spring and summer grazing,” Wells says. “The market signals are there to rebuild, we just need all the environmental signals to fall in place.” Traditionally, between five and 10 percent of commercial cattlemen will throw their hat into the artificial insemination arena. Some operations are equipped to handle the challenges, while other operations are not prepared. “Sexed semen is a viable option for those operations that understand the amount of labor involved to be successful,” Wells says. “Most will recover the extra costs because they are producing a higher quality animal.” Statistics are starting to show sexed semen can work with today’s estrus synchronization protocols. Understanding the drill and being able to make sound decisions will help producers take advantage artificial insemination. “We have found we settle 72 to 73

percent of the cows in active estrus with conventional semen and that number fell to 55 to 56 percent with sexed semen,” Kohler says. “Cows that aren’t in active estrus will conceive at 50 percent with conventional semen and only around 20 percent with sexed semen. Sexed semen costs more so we have made the adjustment to only use it on cows that are in active estrus. Even though there is a little less conception rate, we add a lot to our breeding program and this is a way the every day commercial cattleman can make it work.” The benefits of synchronization programs are well documented. Sexed semen just amplifies some of these advantages because producers can instantly create a product that will work on the ranch or be a very marketable replacement female. “Even if all those cows aren’t in active estrus it stimulates them to come in heat and before long that calving interval has tightened up. It’s a lot easier to manage that tighter calving interval and there are big benefits when you can have a load of calves born in a week to 10 day interval,” Kohler says. “We are currently selling some weaned heifer calves for more than their steer mates. There is good demand for females with a known genetic
background.” “Estrus synchronization protocols do a real good job shortening that calving season. At least 50 percent of those cows are going to calve in a week to 10 day period and the rest will calve on the next heat cycle. Realistically, the majority of the cow herd will calve in 45 days,” Wells says. “You can use semen on some of the top bulls out there and add that maternal component to your replacements.” Designing females that will not only meet the eye-test, but also come with the genetics to be the right kind and fit the environment, are benefits sexed semen brings to the table. Specific mating practices give a whole new meaning to “designer genes.” “If it’s justifiable to produce your own replacements, sexed semen is definitely an attractive option because you can create that designer female,” Wells says. “You can select the breed and the individual within the breed that will help design heifer calves that will perform well in that environment. Along the Gulf Coast, that Super Baldy or those Ultrablack cattle are very exciting because they can have a little more carcass quality with a little ear to withstand rigors of the environment.” “AI is priceless when we can use sexed semen to create those so called designer females. As our records get better, we’re able to identify those better cows that calve early and wean the best calves,” Kohler says. “At this point, we can drive the quality of the cow herd, because we can mate the best cows to good bulls using sexed semen to build replacements. By using “specific matings” we can engineer something that will look good and be at the top of the industry from a genetics standpoint. We believe that female can come in a variety of packages. That’s why we have incorporated Hereford and Simmental genetics into our Angus-based commercial herd. We’re in fescue country and a good female here is going to be a good female in a lot of places because she’ll fit different environments.” A by-product of AI and estrus synchronization is the tight marketing groups created. Sexed semen allows cattlemen to create marketing groups of replacements that have the same genetic background and come in a uniform package. “A uniform group of heifers set to calve in a short window with all heifers or bull calves is pretty attractive to potential buyers,” Wells says. “Some ranchers are willing to pay a premium for high quality genetics and depending on their goals, fetal sex could mean a lot.”

=Tartan Plaid The Lassies: A Step Back In Time By Theresa Sisung
The National Shorthorn Lassies have a long and storied past that started at one of the most historic places in the cattle industry, The Stock Yards Inn in

Chicago. The women’s auxiliary of the American Shorthorn Association, was officially organized in 1956 at the Chicago International Livestock Show

in the Harvest Room of the Stock Yards Inn. However, the work of creating the Lassies really began the year prior when W. Henry Dilatush of Memphis, Tenn., presented a resolution at the 1955 annual meeting recommending the formation of a women’s auxiliary. He suggested the name Shorthorn Lassies. Mr. Dilatush then persuaded Mrs. Henry Baum of West Lebanon, Ind., to assume the responsibility of the new organization. He gave the Lassies a $100 check to help establish the organization, and through letters, he persuaded others to give financial help as well. Mrs. Baum then served as the first National Shorthorn Lassie President. The 1956 International marked the original appearance of Lassie Queens in Chicago. Twelve young ladies vied to be the queen in 1956 but it was Ann Bullock of Missouri that was crowned the first National Lassie Queen. Since the beginning, Lassie Queens have been known for their iconic outfit, which is rooted in the heritage of the Shorthorn breed. Since Shorthorn beef cattle originated in the British Isles and many valuable beef improvements were made through cattle imported directly from Scotland, the national Scottish costume was selected. The kilt is a type of short pleated petticoat worn in the Highlands of Scotland. The tartan is the cloth itself. The Lassie Queen’s tartan is known as the Royal Stuart Modern. The royal tartan, as adopted by the House of Stuart, is the official tartan for Britain’s Royal Family. The plaid is actually a garment worn like a shawl wrapped around the body and fastened at the left shoulder. It is worn by both sexes in Scotland in place of a cloak and the Lassie Queens wear this draped over their left shoulder. This completes the official Lassie Queen attire that is recognized across the entire beef industry.
