Welcome,

What a great time to be in the cow business! 2014 has brought us ample moisture, record prices, and incredible demand for SHORTHORN cattle. It brings truth to the adage “If you build it, they will come.” Over the past several years, people have come from all over the US and Canada. All the while, we have continued to build. This summer over 600 hd of females were sent to pastures in SE ND under the JSF brand. These numbers allow us to share our very best in terms of top end donor cows, heifer calves of incredible quality, and bred females to build cowherds around. Our bull battery is evolving and we think you will like what you see. We have not lost our focus on creating cattle that are born easily, flesh well, and are pleasing to the eye. Where we are changing is adding more performance without increasing mature frame size, creating functional cattle that can perform in a variety of environments with even greater maternal efficiency. Durham Nation 2014 embodies the aforementioned statements and is very reflective of who we are and where we are headed. That said, there are 2 guest consignors that share the same outlook and ideals, their cattle show it, and they are great people to boot. Thanks SBR and GCF! If you would like to extend your trip some, please let us know. We have access to over 2,200 acres within 60 miles of the ranch for upland game and whitetail hunting, with wonderful scenery as your canvas. Also, for those of you traveling from afar, the Schrag Family event sale is the following day in Marion, SD. I can’t think of a better opportunity to see some great cattle, great country, and great people! It is with great excitement and anticipation that the programs of GCF, SBR and JSF invite you to be with us on Saturday, November 1 for Durham Nation 2014! Most sincerely,

Derek

Selling the rights to one flush. Flush to take place on or prior to 6-1-15. Buyer pays all flush costs. Seller guarantees 6 transferrable eggs. The very first ad we ever ran for our first Durham Nation sale was a picture of 0426 with her then heifer calf at side and a heading that read: It’s the Cows. The 2014 edition sets the rule. I love the power, eye appeal, and soundness of 33B, combining the best of her sire and dam into a package with a great deal of intrigue. Speaking of Intrigue, 0426 gives it new meaning. Not a single person comes here and doesn’t ask about this cow. I can only imagine where the breed would be if we had more like her. 10 yrs old this spring, near perfect udder, great foot, and always in excellent condition. She will enter the donor pen here next spring. We are excited to share her practicality and longevity.

15B has been a standout at the ranch since day 1. Her mother is a direct daughter of the great Venture 711 cow and full sib to the bull we brought back here to use on the fall herd the last 2 years, JSF Navigator T2. Saturday Nov. 1 affords a rare opportunity to tie into the best brood cow prospect born on the ranch in 2014 along side the next premier donor, safe to what could be the next bull from JSF to write his own page in the history books, JSF Broker 157Z.

Marvel 100B is likely the most complete heifer in the offering. Flawless structure, impeccable design, and an incredible blend of calving ease, eye appeal, and performance. It comes as no surprise given her name and also her dam. Speaking of her dam, she is a full sib to JSF Allegiance, former herdsire for Aaron Rasmussen, A&T Cattle Co in NE and she has made herd bulls along the way as well. Namely a great one a couple years back, so good we called him just that…The One. He was the talk of the yards and fetched $15,000 in Durhams for Denver 2011. Ask Dave Dillabo and Mike Bennett about his calves. They have done a lot of winning on the west coast and are making excellent brood cows. Her last years bull bred cows here for us. Take advantage of real opportunity and a time tested cow family.

91B is Big Time Good. Go a little further back in her pedigree and you find the granddam of the T11 cow selling next to her. That cow was Rodeo Lady 301. She lived to be 20 years old and raised a calf the year she passed. I can’t think of much more to write about the cow family. They get it done, forever.

Blossom 10B and her dam are a special lot. I told Les Mathers the other day he had discovered a great find in the Taylor Made bull. He reported to me that they come easy, grow well, and in the process develop a great deal body of mass. This heifer fits that bill perfectly and with some pizzazz. Her dam is as impressive a 3 year old cow as you will find anywhere. Admittedly I had many reservations in selling this cow, but, given the quality of her heifer calf coupled with the fact she is safe to Broker, she needed to be on here. If she has a bull, call me. When she’s ready to flush, call me again.

Sharp, square, standout young heifer here by Colonel Gus. If you need one to enjoy next summer and then go on to make a fabulous cow, lot 6 deserves a long look. Her dam has raised some great cattle here, most namely her last years bull, JSF Reverend 124A, now walking the pastures for Greg Crawford in NE as his Jr. Herdsire. Reverend was too young to make the sale, everyone still found him however and not long after he was sold. He combined moderate BW with solid performance and exceptional scan data. 7F30 sells bred back the same way, bull or female, next year’s calf immediately adds to her value. As an added bonus, both are asterisk free.

I find great satisfaction in the fact we can make heifer calves that look like 85B, all the while with a holistic approach in our program of making both great bulls and future brood cows. 85B presents exceptional eye appeal with practicality built in. Her dam has been a great producer in her short time here, landing a herdsire for our great customers in Arkansas, Jerry & Carolyn Cox. Her pedigree is old school and awesome. Her mating to hot new AI sire Broker creates much anticipation for next March!

BW: 79 205 day wt: 619 Our great customer, friend, and long time Shorthorn breeder LeRoy Foss asked me if we would be interested in a few of his cows on shares. I’m sure glad he asked because it meant this heifer calf got to be on the sale! Her dam was purchased from SBR in last year’s sale and is proof of what a Durham Nation bred can do. This gal has great balance and symmetry, not to mention she is one of only a few JSF Goldenrod daughters to sell. Make a trip to Java and you’ll understand why I talk so highly of the bull and have been trying to buy him back for the past several years. He’s the real deal. So is this heifer calf. Thanks LeRoy.

She can run with the best of the best. What’s more is the mating is proven. Her full brother is one of the favorite Plus bulls I’ve ever had, JSF Patton 54Z, now working for the LaPlant Ranch at Binford, ND. Her last year’s heifer calf was JSF Lucy Lu 27A. She was the pick of the crew last year as well and selected by Gavin LaPlant that day for $7000, going on to be the first heifer he ever took to the North Dakota State Fair. LaPlant’s will tell you she got fat on air. Persuasion 47B got the same big, soft middle from momma along with a shot of neck snapping WHOA from Colonel Gus. Examined safe. Due 2-20-15 to Saskvalley Outlaw. This heifer’s dam was one of the picks of Lee Miller’s for his expanding fall herd out in Ohio. I have no doubt she will follow in her mother’s footsteps with regard to longevity and production.

Examined safe. Due 3-5-15 to Saskvalley Outlaw. I love this heifer! Her sire was a bull that we used here and out of a great cow that just headed to our great friend and customer Lee Miller of Paint Valley Farms in OH. I think the resulting Outlaw calf could have a lot of value, bull or heifer.

COMMERICAL SHORTHORNPLUS BRED HEIFER 338 Each year we try to do something to benefit the American Junior Shorthorn Association as we recognize their sustainability is crucial to the future success of this great breed of cattle that has given so much back to us. Over the years we have donated open heifer calves, bred heifers, embryos and semen, as well as been supporters of numerous fundraisers in order to help ensure success of the future of the breed. This year our bred female is a great example of how our breed can compliment the industry. We believe for the breed to be sustainable, this is paramount! Proceeds from the sale of JSF #338 will go to ASA’s Funding the Future, of which 55% goes to the Jr. Association and 45% goes to Shorthorn Jr. Nationals. Great heifer. Great cause. Examined safe.
