Don’t let your membership lapse!
Make sure you pay your annual membership fee by April 1, 2026. If you are a TOC Member and your membership is not paid by April 1, 2026, you will become a WHR Member when you renew your membership.
2026 WHR assessments will come available to complete online starting November 1, 2025. They will also be printed/sent to those whose preferences are set as so in their DigitalBeef accounts. The Board of Directors approved pushing the deadline windows back, and they are listed below.
2026 ASSESSMENT FEE SCHEDULE:
November 1, 2025 – January 25, 2026 $18
January 26, 2026 – March 31, 2026 $24 April 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026 $30
1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2026 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2026.)
2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2026 to an assessed 2026 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months)
*Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees.
The Annual ASA Adult WHR Membership deadline is April 1. Any TOC breeder that does not renew their membership before April 1, 2026 must become a WHR breeder – if they choose to renew after the new April 1 deadline.
Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing.
3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal
2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number
3. A barcode number for each animal tested
Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

As we close out another successful year for the Shorthorn breed, I can’t help but reflect on the excitement and sense of community that filled our recent Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon, held in conjunction with the American Royal in Kansas City. This year’s events set new records — from the tremendous attendance at the meeting and luncheon to the incredible turnout at our Friday evening social at the ASA office. The energy, fellowship, and enthusiasm shown by our members truly reflect the growth and stability of our breed.
“For the fifth consecutive year, Shorthorn registrations have exceeded 15,000 — a clear sign of strength, progress, and confidence in the breed’s future.”
Our new membership numbers are strong and more encouraging is the number of new breeders joining our Shorthorn family — many coming from other breeds after recognizing the unique advantages and community spirit found within Shorthorns. The breed is on the move. We may not have the massive registration numbers of some other associations, but what we have is strength, pride, and steady progress. People are noticing the Shorthorn breed for what it is — a strong, family-friendly community built on genuine relationships and shared values.
The phrase “The Family-Friendly Breed” may sound simple, but in today’s world, it carries tremendous meaning. In a time when society can feel increasingly disconnected, people are yearning for the sense of belonging and shared purpose that the Shorthorn community offers. The values of family, integrity, and working together are alive and well in our breed — and those values are drawing people in.
During this holiday season, I am reminded of the words of business author Harvey MacKay, who recently wrote about perception and reality in his weekly commentary. He pointed out that what
Montie D. Soules asa executive secretary/CEO
we perceive isn’t always what’s real — and that perception can be misleading. He also emphasized how important first impressions, trust, and honesty are in building lasting success.
“What you see may not be reality. Perception can be misleading.” — Harvey MacKay
That message struck a chord with me because it applies directly to our breed. Each of us plays a role in shaping how others perceive the Shorthorn breed. Whether it’s at a show, a sale, or a visit to the farm, we are all representatives of what the Shorthorn name stands for. Sometimes perception and reality don’t match — but it’s up to us to make sure they do.
Our actions, our words, and our dedication to raising quality cattle backed by reliable performance data all contribute to the image others form of Shorthorns. The reality is that we are a breed built on honesty, family, and hard work. We care about one another and about the success of the people who choose to raise Shorthorn cattle. That’s the reality we need to project every day.
As you celebrate the holidays, I encourage you to take a moment to look in the mirror and think about the perception

you leave behind — as a breeder, as a businessperson, and as a member of the Shorthorn family. Does that perception reflect the reality of who you are and what you stand for? When we align perception and reality, we build trust. And when we build trust, our breed grows stronger.
The Shorthorn breed has produced generations of outstanding people — individuals and families who embody the best of what the cattle industry represents. Their example has helped shape the strong foundation we continue to build upon today. Growth doesn’t happen by accident; it happens because people believe in the reality of what we stand for.
As we wrap up 2025 and look forward to a new year, I challenge each of you to keep promoting that true, positive perception of the Shorthorn breed. Let’s continue to open our arms to new members, share our passion for these great cattle, and keep working together to strengthen our future.
From all of us at the American Shorthorn Association, may you and your families have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Take time to reflect on your blessings — and remember, being part of the Shorthorn Family is one of the greatest blessings of all.

Are you taking a much-needed breather after the whirlwind of shows this fall? I know we are! Though we do not have any shows in December, it is a time to prepare for all that 2026 brings. Along with that, we hope you are enjoying the holiday season with those closest to you! Gearing up for the upcoming national shows, it is important to go over the check list for each.
Many of you will be making the journey to Oklahoma City for our 2nd Super National of the year, Cattlemen’s Congress. And others onto Denver for the National Western Stock Show.
Cattlemen’s Congress returns for the 5th Annual event, with late entries closing December 5th. Stalling requests are processed with entries; note there are very specific instructions found on their website to ensure you have the best chance of getting your request. The OG&E Coliseum opened earlier this year and will be home to our open and junior shows. There will still be some construction, and the location of the Sale Ring will be in Barn 3 for 2026. If attending, be sure to familiarize
yourself with the new facility. If you have Cattlemen’s Congress questions, please send those to Cassie (cassie@shorthorn. org) for tie show and Wade (wade@ shorthorn.org) for the E.D.G.E. or pen show.
National Western Stock Show (NWSS) comes in next on our schedule for National shows. If you have not entered, late entries will be considered until December 10th. This year, “hill cattle” will make their grand entrance into the Sue Anschutz-Rodgers Livestock Center & CoBank Arena. With the opening of this new facility, pay attention to exhibitor information for any updates to procedures. If you plan to attend both shows, reach out to Wade or Cassie if you need help with schedules.
As January concludes, our team heads South to the Fort Worth Stock Show (FWSS). Unique to FWSS, ownership for open animals must match the exhibitor’s name on entries provided to FWSS. This ownership will be evaluated at check-in. The owner and/or exhibitor is not required to show the animal during the open show. Please transfer
any animals to the exhibitor prior to the ownership deadline.
Dixie Nationals in Jackson, Mississippi wraps up our show season as the final National Show of the year. Entries are now open and will close the end of January. The open show will be held Saturday, February 21st. This is a laid-back show, and a great way to secure final points for the show year!
Full schedules for all shows can be found in the News & Notes section of this issue.
As a reminder, please let us know if you will not be attending a show you have entered. This will speed up checkin and allow us to reallocate tie spaces if needed. We appreciate your cooperation to ensure a good experience for all.
Should you need anything as you prepare for upcoming shows, we are happy to assist you with your needs. Happy Holidays from ASA, we look forward to seeing everyone as we ring in 2026.

“Deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa la la la la, la la la la…”
This season is not just halls being decked, it’s about decking the stalls, show rings, and barns, as we are in the midst of the most exciting time of the year! I want to say a special thank you to all of those who made our Deck the Stalls fundraiser event successful. The Shorthorn Youth Development Fund (SYDF) depends on the generosity of donors like you. Funds raised support events like the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference. Whether you donated an item, bid during the auction, made a purchase, or simply made a donation, we appreciate your support and cannot thank you enough.
“’Tis the season to be jolly…”
And jolly we are! If watching those red, white, and roan cattle on the green shavings at Louisville didn’t get your heart racing, please check your pulse. The atmosphere, not just at NAILE, but all the other point shows I have attended this Fall has been electric. From the early morning hum of blowers to the gleam of freshly fit show cattle, everyone is in high spirits. Friendships form in the barns, rivalries stay friendly, and the shared love of Shorthorns brings us together.
“Troll the ancient Yuletide carol…”
Anticipation builds as the judge
makes the final pass and serenades us with the championship speech. Whether it’s a grand champion heifer or a top bull in class, every banner tells a story of hard work put in by breeders and exhibitors. These moments are where months, even years of dedication, genetics, feeding, and fitting all come together. Getting one dialed in is a mix of science, art, and showmanship. After the shows, the barns are always full of laughter, fellowship, and celebration. Some exhibitors even turn on holiday tunes—yes, Deck the Halls might make an appearance— reminding everyone that this season is about joy, family, and gratitude for our Shorthorn cattle.
In many ways, the rhythm of Deck the Halls mirrors the cadence of show life itself — structured, celebratory, and rooted in tradition. Whether in small county barns or on national stages, cattle shows remind us that excellence is achieved through both passion and perseverance.
So, this winter, as you hum “Fa la la la la, la la la la,” remember for our Shorthorn families, the most festive place to be might just be in the barn, where the true spirit of the season shines—one ribbon, one banner, one heifer, and one happy exhibitor at a time.

The 2025 American Shorthorn Association Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet, held in conjunction with the American Royal, brought together breeders, members, and friends of the breed for a weekend of learning, celebration, and fellowship.
Festivities began on the evening of October 24 at the ASA office, where breeders gathered for a casual social to reconnect with familiar faces and meet new ones. From the staff’s perspective, it’s always a joy to see the office filled from wall to wall with members who share a passion for Shorthorns.
The Annual Meeting followed the next morning, at the Embassy Suites Kansas City Airport. More than 170 members from 24 states attended to hear association updates, elect new board members, and recognize the accomplishments of breeders and members across the country.
Executive Secretary/CEO, Montie D. Soules, delivered the State of the Association address, which highlighted key performance indicators, financial updates, and current initiatives shaping the association’s direction.
After the report, the Nominating Committee presented three candidates for open board positions: Ben Wilson
(Ky.), Scott Loving (Kan.), and Rick Osterday (S.D.). Each will serve a threeyear term, with Wilson and Loving beginning their first and Osterday continuing for his second. The board then elected new officers for the ninemember leadership team. Mark Gordon of Ill. will serve as President, Jeff Bedwell of Okla. as Vice President, and Rick Osterday of Java, S.D. as Executive Director. They join Tyler Cates (Ind.), Cary Gilman (Iowa), Jeff Aegerter (Neb.) and Cory Bollum (Minn.) in guiding the association forward.
A sincere thank-you goes to Lee Miller, who retired as the 2024–2025 ASA President after a year of dedicated service and completing his six-year term as a board member. The association also extends deep appreciation to John Russell, who completed his six-year term on the board. His commitment and many hours of work have made a lasting impact on the breed.
Following elections, attendees heard updates from several committees, including Junior Activities, the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund Foundation, and the Shorthorn Foundation, along with reports on other association efforts.
After the meeting adjourned, members enjoyed time to visit before gathering for
a hearty steak luncheon.
The day concluded with the Awards Presentation, a highlight that recognizes excellence throughout the breed. Breeders who registered more than 100 head during the fiscal year were honored with Century Club Awards. Owners of qualified cattle received Performance Certificates, and National and Regional Show Winners for 2024–2025 were recognized with leather banners and metal awards.
The evening wrapped up with Special Recognition Awards, honoring individuals and families who have made significant contributions to the Shorthorn breed. This year’s Heritage Awards were presented to Priddy Family Shorthorns and Jay Benham. The Merit Award went to Stuart Wilson, and the Builders of the Breed honors were presented to Lynn Charles Ewald and Jeff & Susie Winkle.
The ASA extends heartfelt congratulations to all award recipients and appreciation to everyone who attended and supported this year’s events.
Mark your calendars — the 2026 ASA Annual Meeting will take place October 24 in Kansas City, Missouri, following a similar schedule of business, celebration, and camaraderie.

The Shorthorn Heritage Award recognizes Shorthorn members who have shown exceptional leadership for Shorthorn activities in a state or regional area. These honorees are persons that have shown exceptional passion in all areas of the breed. Award recipients have promoted the breed by taking leadership roles within their respective geographical areas. They are individuals that can be given credit to helping with the longterm success of the breed at any level. They have attended functions, been a mainstay, and have shown their passion and love for the breed and the people in the breed. A Heritage Award winner is a true Shorthorn enthusiast who has positively impacted the breed to the benefit of all Shorthorn breeders.

Jay Benham’s lifelong passion for the Shorthorn breed is deeply rooted in family tradition. His grandfather, Frank Benham, was among the first herdsmen in the early 1900s to raise polled Shorthorns, shipping bulls by boxcar from Tippecanoe, Ohio, to the Chicago International. Frank often remarked that while the horned cattle might have been better, the “muleys” (polled cattle) always sold first.
In the 1950s and 60s, Jay worked alongside his father, Robert Benham, expanding from showing steers through 4-H to building a breeding herd of heifers and bulls. His foundation sires helped establish Jay’s reputation for strong cow families and consistent genetic progress.
After graduating from The Ohio State University in 1967, Jay taught high school agriculture in Oxford, Ohio, where he shared his enthusiasm for Shorthorns with his students. In 1971, he was selected as the first Administrative Secretary of the National FFA Alumni Association, which required a move to Washington, D.C. While in D.C., he was invited to an event at the Italian Embassy to introduce a new (old) breed of cattle called Chianina. Jay acquired enough semen to breed 20 Shorthorns before any Chianina were born in North America. This experience proved to be quite an education and strongly reinforced his belief in the gentler temperament of Shorthorns.
During his time in Washington, Jay met and married his wife, Jill. In 1976, the couple returned to the family farm in Troy, Ohio, where they raised four children—Heather, Angie, Rebecca, and RJ—and established their own herd, Stone Springs Shorthorns. Their children were active in both farming and Shorthorn youth programs, holding various leadership positions within the Ohio

Junior Shorthorn Association and FFA. Angie served as both the Ohio and National Shorthorn Lassie Queen.
Jay has remained steadfast in his goal to bring new families to the Shorthorn breed. As President of the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders’ Association during a period of stagnation, he helped revitalize the organization—tripling membership in one year and doubling it the next. Under his leadership, Ohio became one of the strongest state Shorthorn associations in the nation. In addition, Jay has served in numerous other leadership roles, as a delegate to the ASA Annual Meeting many times, and on several national committees.
In 1989, when the National Junior Shorthorn Show came to Troy, Jay played a key role in making the event a success. Years later, in 2001, the Benham family again played a major role when Ohio hosted the event. In 2022, the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders’ Association honored Jay with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
Married now for 53 years, Jay and Jill continue to operate a cow-calf herd and Shorthorn feedlot, marketing locally raised beef. Their day-to-day operations are managed by their son, RJ, and grandson, Luke Gilliland—both recipients of the prestigious FFA American Farmer Degree. Blessed with ten grandchildren, Jay hopes one or more will carry on his lifelong passion for Shorthorn cattle and the family’s proud legacy.
The American Shorthorn Association proudly congratulates Jay Benham as the 2025 Heritage Award recipient, honoring his lifetime of leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to the Shorthorn breed and its community.

For more than a century, the Priddy family has been deeply rooted in the Shorthorn breed, carrying forward one of the longestrunning family traditions in Texas. What began in 1905 with W.N. Koonce’s first Shorthorn has grown into a six-generation story of cattle, community, and legacy.
W.N.’s son, Ben O. (B.O.) Koonce, registered his first Shorthorn cow in 1920 and quickly built a reputation for raising quality cattle that excelled in the show ring and carried lasting bloodlines. His devotion earned him the Texas Pioneer Breeder Award in 1984—a recognition of decades devoted to the breed.
That passion carried on to the next generation. Ben’s daughter, Nelda, showed her first Shorthorn heifer at age ten. She later served as Texas Lassie President and as a National Lassie Board member. Alongside her husband, Garth Priddy—an agricultural science teacher for 34 years and a Texas Shorthorn director—the couple wove Shorthorns into the very fabric of their lives. They began Priddy Shorthorns in September 1963, the same year they married. In 2007, Garth and Nelda were honored with the Texas Pioneer Breeder Award for their tireless efforts to grow and strengthen the breed. Their steady leadership and love for Shorthorns continue to inspire their children and grandchildren.
Their three children became the bridge between past and future. Marlin, the oldest, began showing at age nine when his grandfather gave him his first registered heifer. By 1976, he had captured both Reserve Shorthorn on Hoof and Champion Shorthorn Carcass at the Fort Worth Stock Show. He went on to teach agriculture for 32 years, inspiring students and drawing many into the Shorthorn world. Today, Marlin and his wife, Laura Ann, operate Down by the Bosque, where their daughters, Shayla and

Miranda, proudly continue the family’s cattle tradition.
Annette, the middle child, carried the Shorthorn banner as Texas Shorthorn Queen and later National Queen in 1986–87, traveling across the country to promote and represent the breed with pride.
Greg, the youngest, began showing cattle at just nine years old. He and his wife, Sally, of Desdemona, have built a herd of their own while passing that same passion to their children. Their daughter, Sheridan, and son, Everett, proudly represented the fifth generation of the family in the show ring and remain active in raising Shorthorn cattle. In 2023, Greg and Sally were honored with the Texas Shorthorn Association Progressive Breeders Award, and Greg now serves as Vice President of the Texas Shorthorn Association. Together, they continue to strengthen the family’s six-generation legacy, ensuring the Priddy name and the Shorthorn breed remain deeply intertwined for years to come.
The story doesn’t stop there — the sixth generation is already stepping into barns and pastures, with the oldest great-grandchildren learning the rhythms of show season and the youngest not far behind.
For the Priddy family, Shorthorns are more than cattle — they are a heritage, a way of life, and a promise to honor the past while building the future. Rooted in generations of perseverance, faith, and family tradition, the Priddy legacy continues to exemplify what it means to live the Shorthorn way.
The American Shorthorn Association proudly recognizes the Priddy Family Shorthorns as recipients of the 2025 Heritage Award, honoring six generations of dedication, leadership, and lifelong commitment to the Shorthorn breed in Texas.

The Shorthorn Merit Award recognizes individuals who support and promote the cattle industry. This award honors those beef cattle industry leaders who have specifically assisted and had a positive influence on the Shorthorn breed. These individuals have been exceptional supporters and dedicated friends of the Shorthorn breed for many years.

Stuart Wilson grew up on a purebred livestock and grain farm near Findlay, Illinois, where he raised Shorthorn cattle. He was active in both 4-H and FFA, showing at the local, state, and national levels. He was a member of the 1966 Illinois State FFA Champion Livestock Judging Team, which placed second in the National Contest at the American Royal. Stuart’s mother, Joyce, served as treasurer of the National Shorthorn Lassies for six years and was named the 1967 Lassie of the Year. The family traveled extensively to shows and sales, where Joyce sold merchandise to benefit the Illinois Lassie organization.
Stuart graduated from Western Illinois University in 1971 with a B.S. in Animal Science. While at WIU, he was the founding president of the Alpha Gamma Sigma agricultural fraternity and a member of the Block and Bridle Club. He was also part of Western’s highly successful 1970 livestock judging team. He went on to pursue graduate work at the University of Missouri.
In 1971, Stuart began his career immediately after college as a field representative for The Shorthorn World. He organized the first beef cattle auction ever held in a hotel ballroom, moving cattle from the Chicago International to the Pick Congress Hotel in downtown Chicago. In 1972, he became an insurance agent for American Live Stock Insurance Company/Harding and Harding. In 1973, he established Stuart Wilson Sale Management, which managed Shorthorn cattle sales throughout the United States and Canada for over four decades
In 1976, he established and managed Whispering Pines Cattle Company in Brewton, Alabama. He played a key role in the success of the Graham Dispersal in Waverly, Minnesota, in 1975, and the Ernmore Dispersal in Manitoba, Canada. At the time, Canadian Image, a bull from the Ernmore Dispersal, became the highestselling Shorthorn bull in Canada, bringing $20,000. Stuart was serving as Publisher of The Shorthorn World when it was sold in 1976.
In 1983 and 1984, Stuart coordinated two large importations of cattle from Ireland for

Sangamon Farms in Dewittville, New York. He managed these cattle for T. Howard Snethen until Snethen’s passing, at which time the nucleus of the herd was sold to Moore Shorthorns in Jerseyville, Illinois.
In 2006, Stuart returned to American Live Stock Insurance Company/Harding and Harding as manager of the cattle department. He quickly advanced to Manager and Head Underwriter for the Livestock Division.
In 2019, Stuart was inducted into the Livestock Marketeers Hall of Fame at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. The Marketeers is a fraternal organization of livestock professionals recognizing fieldmen, auctioneers, and sale managers for their contributions to the livestock industry.
After retiring from the insurance industry in 2021, Stuart formed Stuart Wilson Consulting, where he continues to work as a sale consultant dedicated to the genetic improvement of Shorthorn cattle. He advises both new and established breeders in developing their herds through the selection of show cattle, donor females, herd bulls, embryos, and semen.
Stuart has supported the beef cattle industry—and specifically the Shorthorn breed—his entire life. He has assisted, advised, consulted, and directed countless breeders with their operations. Passionate about helping others achieve success in the Shorthorn industry, Stuart has dedicated his life to the stewardship and advancement of the breed. He is also a strong advocate for promoting scholarships and youth programs within the Shorthorn community.
Stuart and his wife, Ann, have been married for 51 years and have owned several Shorthorn cattle throughout their marriage. Ann was the 1968 Illinois Shorthorn Lassie Queen and the 1970 Illinois Beef Queen. They have one daughter, Robyn, and one granddaughter, Avery.
The American Shorthorn Association congratulates Stuart Wilson as the 2025 Merit Award recipient, honoring his unwavering commitment, mentorship, and lifelong service to the Shorthorn breed and its people.

They are also recognized as individuals that have continuously been supporters and promoters for both the Shorthorn breed and the beef cattle industry. Builder of the Breed award winners are recognized for making a lasting impact on our breed.

For Lynn Ewald of Fair Acres Stock Farms, Waldorf, Minnesota, Shorthorns aren’t just a breed—they’re a birthright. With roots tracing back to 1892 when his great-greatgrandfather purchased the family farm and the first registered Shorthorns arriving in 1902, Lynn was born with the breed in his blood. At just eight years old, he stepped into the show ring with a heifer at the Austin Minnesota Shorthorn Show—and he’s never looked back.
A true Shorthorn family, Lynn is a fourthgeneration Shorthorn breeder and the third generation to achieve the honor of Shorthorn Builder of the Breed. His grandfather, Charles Ewald, was honored in 1963, his father, Lyle Ewald, in 1997, and Lynn joins that legacy in 2025.
Lynn’s early days in 4-H and FFA set the stage for a lifetime of leadership and achievement. He served on the National Junior Shorthorn Board and later the senior board of the Minnesota Shorthorn Association, including time as President. From his home base in Minnesota, he has owned and exhibited Shorthorn champions in the USA, Canada, Argentina, and Uruguay—twice achieving the title of Champion of the World Shorthorn Female.
His show ring success is legendary. Crestdale Jane 6L, a heifer that claimed seven state fair titles, was just the beginning. He went on to win both the heifer and bull shows at the American Royal with DFS Margie and DFS Red Rider and claimed top honors at Canadian Agribition with heifer Oxette and bull Uffda.
Beyond North America, Lynn’s influence spans continents. For nearly three decades, he has worked with Shorthorns in Argentina and Uruguay, exhibiting nine grand champions and three “Champion of the World” winners—Patranca, Afrodita, and Julie—spanning three generations of excellence. Along with his partner, Hector Mario Eyherabide, Lynn has been
instrumental in the resurgence of the Shorthorn breed in Argentina’s commercial sector and the growing prominence of the breed in major livestock shows. Together, they have contributed to the advancement of the Shorthorn breed across South America, Central America (Costa Rica), and Africa (Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania).
Lynn has also been a trailblazer in international genetics, being the first to introduce Argentine Shorthorn genetics to North America—an achievement that helped reshape the breed’s future. His agri-business expertise extends over 45 years of developing and operating successful purebred and commercial cattle and agricultural operations across multiple continents.
His passion for Shorthorns has also inspired the next generation. His nieces, Ann and Laura, followed his example into the show ring, served as Lassie Queens, and were elected to the AJSA national board. Lynn didn’t just teach them about cattle— he taught them about life, leadership, and legacy.
Lynn continues to run a thriving cow/ calf operation in Minnesota and manages cattle in Argentina, buying and selling cattle across four continents. He is also one of the founders of the Minnesota Junior Heifer Classic, a show that continues to shape the next generation of cattlemen and women.
His expertise in the ring extends to judging, having evaluated purebred cattle in the USA, Canada, and Argentina—including the honor of judging the 2023 Minnesota State Fair Shorthorn Super Regional Show.
For Lynn Ewald, Shorthorns are more than a breed—they’re a lifelong mission. His impact is global, his legacy generational, and his dedication undeniable. Few have done more to build, represent, and elevate the breed both at home and abroad.
It is truly fitting that in 2025, Lynn Ewald is recognized as a Builder of the Breed.

Jeff and Susie Winkle established Cedar Lane Farm in 1985 when they moved from Marysville, Ohio, to Cedarville, Ohio, to farm Susie’s family farm after working for an Angus operation. At first, they owned a few Angus cows, but as their son Scott approached 4-H age, they decided to return to the Shorthorn breed—a breed that Jeff’s family had been involved with since the 1920s.
The family ventured to the Ohio Beef Expo, where they purchased a bred cow from the McLaughlin (10 M’s) family and a bull from Waukaru Farms, beginning a small herd. A few years later, they purchased another bull at the Expo from Cates Farm— CF Bravo, a son of Trump out of CF 18th Fool. This bull roamed the pastures of Cedar Lane for eight years and provided Scott, Eric, and Kelsey with many outstanding 4-H projects throughout their show careers.
About fifteen years ago, Cedar Lane Farm made a large investment to improve and expand the herd by purchasing embryos and flushes from select cows in various herds. Around that same time, the family became more involved in the National Show circuit. One of their first significant purchases was a heifer that Kelsey showed in her final year of 4-H, who was named Reserve Calf Champion at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. This heifer became the foundation of their Cindy Beauty line. They also purchased a flush out of GCC Fool Pride 10, which became the start of their Proud Fool line. Both cow families have gone on to produce back-to-back Junior National Champion Cows.
Cedar Lane Farm achieved another milestone with CLF Foolin’ Around 1401 ET, a Sonny son out of a full sibling to CF Bravo that was purchased as an embryo. This three-time undefeated Ohio and Kentucky State Fair Grand Champion Bull helped

elevate their program to the next level. His daughters now form the foundation of the purebred herd, and his son, Ain’t No Foolin’, has proven to be a strong breeding piece himself—siring the 2023 Junior National Champion Bull in Oklahoma City and the Reserve Champion Bull at the Keystone International.
Since Susie retired from teaching in 2022, she has become the main “cattle whisperer,” handling the breaking and feeding of the show cattle, while Jeff manages the crops and hay in addition to his full-time job at an aerospace factory. Their competitive drive remains strong, earning Cedar Lane Farm the Premier Breeder Award at the Ohio State Fair for the past four years. While the show accolades are meaningful, the most rewarding part of their Shorthorn involvement has been the time spent—nearly 90% of their vacation days—attending Junior Nationals, State, and National Shows, and the lifelong friendships they have formed within the Shorthorn community.
Jeff and Susie have dedicated many hours to promoting the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders Association through events such as The Farm Science Review, the Fall Showcase, and the Ohio Beef Expo Sale, where they now market a large portion of their genetics. They also ensure that Ohio Shorthorn Directories are available at every show they attend.
In closing, Jeff and Susie express their sincere gratitude to the American Shorthorn Association for this prestigious award. As they reflect on the list of recipients dating back to 1945, they are both honored and humbled to be included among such distinguished individuals.
As Jeff says, Eat Beef, Wear Leather, and Raise Shorthorns! Congratulations to Jeff & Susie.

The National Shorthorn Lassie Queen Contest is a distinguished event that honors leadership, tradition, and the advancement of young women within the Shorthorn breed and the broader agricultural community. This year, we are proud to uphold the tradition of crowning our National Royalty in
conjunction with Cattlemen’s Congress. Two accomplished candidates have completed the application process and will compete for the titles of National Shorthorn Lassie Queen and National Shorthorn Lassie. During the contest, participants will assist ringside alongside the current National Shorthorn Lassie
Queen, Brie Duerre, attend a luncheon and gift exchange, and be formally introduced at the National Lassie Association Annual Meeting. Our Royalty will also participate in an event held at the Governor’s Mansion this year. We are excited to have this new opportunity for our young ladies as well.
Hailing from Southern Ohio, eighteen-year-old Sadie Cummons is a fifth-generation farmer whose roots run deep in the Shorthorn cattle industry. The daughter of Thomas “Scott” and Courtney Cummons, Sadie is set to graduate from Gallia Academy High School in May. Her academic journey will continue Fall 2026, where she plans to major in agriculture studies, focusing on meat science and animal embryology.
Sadie’s lifelong involvement in farming has shaped her into a passionate advocate for agricultural education and youth engagement. Since 2017, she has proudly represented the Ohio Shorthorn Lassie Association, cherishing the opportunity to support Ohio’s junior members and breeders. One of her favorite traditions is walking into the sale ring with the official bagpiper at the Ohio Beef Expo—a moment that encapsulates her love for community and heritage.
Driven by a vision to expand the Lassie program not only in Ohio but across the nation, Sadie’s leadership and enthusiasm continue to inspire those around her. Her commitment to agriculture and youth development marks her as a standout contestant and a role model for aspiring young farmers.

From Macomb, Illinois, Masyn Riggins is forging a path in the world of animal science and livestock breeding. The daughter of Andy and Holly Riggins, Masyn is currently a freshman at Kansas State University, majoring in Animal Science and Industry Management with a concentration in beef reproduction.
Masyn’s journey began with a passion for showing and breeding Shorthorns, aiming to produce high-quality livestock and develop a purebred breeding program for both personal and family farm success. Her dedication has already earned recognition, including being named Macomb FFA’s first-ever Discovery STAR farmer—a testament to her leadership and commitment to agricultural excellence.

Masyn has served Illinois with distinction in both Princess and Queen capacities, consistently exemplifying leadership and integrity. Through her dedication, she has inspired numerous young women to pursue opportunities to represent Illinois, fostering greater engagement and enthusiasm within the community. Her presence at sales and shows—both statewide and nationally—reflects her commitment to promoting the Lassies and their values. Masyn eagerly anticipates the chance to further broaden her experience and contribute at the national level.
Both Sadie and Masyn exemplify the spirit of young agricultural leaders—rooted in tradition, yet forward-thinking in their ambitions. We look forward to getting to know these ladies better and having them represent both Shorthorns and the Lassie Association throughout 2026.

Denny Jordan
When Denny Jordan was told that he would be receiving this recognition, his first reaction was that he was completely honored to be singled out by his peers as anything special. There have been many breeders, before him and currently, who have similar histories and deserve equal recognition.
Shorthorns have been a part of Denny’s life for as long as he can remember—and long before that. His great-great-grandfather was the first settler in Drummer Township in central Illinois around 1859, and Denny grew up on that same farm. Cattle were always part of the Jordan family. His greatgrandfather used to drive cattle from central Illinois to the Chicago stockyards on horseback in its early years, roughly 150 miles.
Denny believes he was the first in his family to ever enter the show ring with Shorthorns. When he was ten, he showed a Shorthorn steer at the county fair. At that time, there were only Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn breeds being shown. He remembers there being three classes of about a dozen in each Shorthorn class. His steer weighed 925 pounds and was a heavyweight. He stood next to last and received a B rating—but he was hooked.
Over the years, Denny has had both good and bad years in the show ring. Some that stood out include 1991, when a steer he sold, sired by Rodeo Drive, was named Grand Champion Steer at the Illinois State Fair. There were roughly 700 steers at the time, and it remains the only Shorthorn steer to ever win the Grand Prize at the ISF. In 1988, the family showed eight offspring of Seven Ts Greg, and all were named some kind of champion.
He used bulls to make them “blockier,” bulls to make them taller, deeper, and thicker. Times changed—and so did the cattle.
Denny attended all but the first Shorthorn Youth Conference and won the Showmanship Contest in Colorado with Cris Davis of Big Rock, Illinois. His kids all grew up showing Shorthorns and attending Junior Nationals, and now the family has moved on to grandkids attending and showing.
He spent six years on the Board of the

American Shorthorn Association, serving as President for two. Ironically, during that time, his oldest daughter, Tasha, was President of the Junior Association.
Denny has traveled many miles with friends in the breed and learned from many of the best. He has attended sales of a lot of the “greats” of the breed— many of whom are now gone.
He knows this kind of success is not possible without a supportive family, and he is no different. His wife, Terri, has been with him every step of the way for 47 years, and their daughters—

Tasha, Amanda, and Ashleigh—have all contributed in countless ways. The family continues to grow, and Shorthorns continue to play a part.
Denny says that writing this feels somewhat like writing his own obituary rather than a tribute to himself. With luck, he hopes to be around this breed for years to come. From his heart, he extends his sincere thanks. Congratulations Denny Jordan on being our 2025 American Royal Show Honoree.
