The Board of Directors took some time to review the 90-day past-due policy. After seeing an increase in overdue accounts, a policy change was enacted, which brought about another change regarding membership renewals. First (as of January 1, 2024): Any past due balance over 60 days will automatically put an account onhold until the full account balance has been paid. As a reminder, this will restrict online access to only being able to pay that balance, as well as no printing of any registration papers is permitted when there is a balance due. Second (effective immediately): Due to the increase in unpaid membership renewals, (i.e. breeders logging in and renewing their membership and not making payment) membership renewals must be paid at the time of renewal in order to gain online/ member access for that calendar year. If a breeder logs in, agrees to renew the membership but then does not pay simultaneously, said membership renewal will be made null and void and deleted the next day.

WHR Breeders

WHR Assessments for 2024 were sent in November. 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2024 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2024.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2024 to an assessed 2024 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months) 2024 ASSESSMENT FEE SCHEDULE: November 1, 2023 - January 9, 2024 $18 January 10 - February 29, 2024 $24 March 1, 2024 and after $30 *Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees.

Send DNA Directly to Neogen As a reminder, breeders can now send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office first. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the office for preprocessing. 3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal 2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number 3. A barcode number for each animal tested Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, (it’s not entirely an automated process) staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to print and send to the lab with samples. Checks/payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

Association Outlook

Montie D. asa executive Soules secretary/CEO

Make a Difference Today

I

t doesn’t seem possible that 2023 is already coming to an end. The past twelve months have flown by and a lot has been happening in the breed. Everyone has been kept extra busy with shows, sales, the Junior National, Shorthorn events and programs making the past year full of positive vibes. I don’t want to dwell on the past and prefer to look ahead to next year’s activities, but it would be remiss to not mention a few things. The 2023 Junior National and Youth Conference in Iowa was the largest we’ve had with a record number of exhibitors and cattle exhibited. Our Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon in conjunction with the American Royal just wrapped up with one of the largest attendances we have had. The open house social at the office was a big hit for all who attended. We registered over 15,000 head for the third consecutive year; which adds a lot of stability to our breed. Going back to the Cattlemen’s Congress in January, the sale was the best and the highest grossing we’ve had at this national show event. Many of the national shows are increasing in numbers by 20% or more. The market for registered Shorthorns is at an all-time high along with the commercial market. Heavy weaned calves bring more than $1,500 a pop, and heavy feeders are worth $2,000 to $2,400. Yes, 2023 has

10

been good for the cattle industry and for the Shorthorn breed. So, as they play Auld Lang Syne on December 31st, we must look to 2024. We all have a fresh look and certain expectations as the new year arrives. Many make New Year’s resolutions for lots of different reasons. The only resolution I see is for Shorthorn breeders to stay the course and continue to supply the marketplace with better animals backed with the documentation that adds premiums to the product. One of our first events of the new year will be the Shorthorn E.D.G.E Show at the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. This should be quite interesting and educational for Shorthorn enthusiasts and any folks looking to use Shorthorn genetics. The E.D.G.E. show will combine the performance data and phenotype of the animals giving a new prospectus on how to evaluate cattle. The ASA Staff and Board of Directors are planning a major event in Lexington, Kentucky on July 18, 19 and 20: A must-attend Symposium of industry leaders sharing how-to’s that will help us all learn more about keeping our breed on the move. There will be many events, shows, and sales that demonstrate the value of this breed throughout the coming year, just as in past years. We all have goals for 2024 that we will try to achieve, but we know there will be some

shorthorn country • december 2023

high points and some bumps in the road and to predict when is nearly impossible. This quote credited to Nick Saban hits home: “What happened yesterday is history. What happens tomorrow is a mystery. What we do today makes a difference.” The most important part of this quote is “What we do today makes a difference.” Every day can make a difference. It is part of staying the course and staying on track. Yesterday is yesterday and tomorrow is truly a mystery and today we have the ability to make a difference! I challenge you to make a difference every day of the new year and see the progress and results. The holiday season is about family and sharing. In our Family Friendly Breed, it’s a great time to celebrate our Shorthorn Family, too. We have a special group of folks with a common passion for this great breed which brings us together as one in more ways than you may know. Share the good fortune with your family and the Shorthorn family. Like many families before us, pull together to accomplish success and growth. As the saying goes, it takes a village. Well, it takes the Shorthorn Family pulling together to create the successes each day that will make a difference tomorrow! Happy Holidays!

Up Ahead & in the Rear View The year 2023 has simultaneously flown by and dragged on it seems. The phrase “the days are long, but the years are short” so adequately describes the Woolfolk house these days. Two under 2 is a challenge, but we decided to up the difficulty level with full time working parents and a cow herd! My saving grace is that on the days that it’s hard, I remind myself that there’s plenty of you, who did the same thing and lived to tell about it. Our son is obsessed with cows, which simultaneously helps and creates times of struggle all on its own. On the Shorthorn calendar, things mostly seemed to zoom by. Here we are writing for the December issue when spring bull sales were not that long ago, and the NJSS in Des Moines was just seemingly a couple months ago, not almost half a year. While time has not slowed down since we turned 2022 over into January 2023, there are plenty of highlights from the past year in the breed worth taking a moment to slow down and relive here in this column. We kicked off the year in Oklahoma City at Cattlemen’s Congress with the stoutest pen bull and heifer show in recent memory, and one of the largest open shows of any breed in OKC. What an outstanding display of the red, white, and roan that week! Those stud bulls that showed in OKC sold like wildfire across the country. Our industry is traditional, and I love some aspects of that. But it’s also changing. I believe new lines of thinking and decision makers are looking for new, different genetics that can provide them with a stout set of feeder calves and a winning set of replacement heifers. Shorthorns can fit that bill well. Opportunities are there for those who hustle wisely. Once again, the National Junior Shorthorn Show was a world-class event. 12

Maybe even a Disney World class event this summer! Breaking records in both attendees and cattle shown, there’s a lot of momentum behind our American Junior Shorthorn Association. If you want to see our breed’s future leaders in action, go to a junior national. If you want to see them stay in Shorthorns and sustain the future of the breed, support our junior national. There’s no better program for raising a family than junior livestock projects. Genomic data submissions are growing as breeders embrace the technology available to our industry. While some of the increase can certainly be attributed to the new requirements for herd sires to be genomic tested, the growth is moreso via breeder commitment to using the available tools to improve Shorthorn cattle. Down the road, the implementation of the walking bull rules will pay great dividends as we improve our ability to maintain an accurate pedigree registry through the power of parent verification. Plus, we will make Shorthorn cattle better with these tools at our fingertips. We have looked back on 2023, but there’s lots to look forward to in 2024 as well! The Shorthorn E.D.G.E. show will make its debut at Cattlemen’s Congress. I am looking forward to the start of this unique exposition and expect to see it flourish in the future. Cattle market signals indicate we should have another strong bull sale season next spring. The National Junior Shorthorn Show is poised to be another great event in Timonium, Maryland. And we can’t forget The Summer Symposium, presented by the American Shorthorn Association July 18-20 in Lexington, Kentucky. I can’t wait to release the itinerary for The Symposium to you in the first part of next year. It’s going

shorthorn country • december 2023

to be a must-attend event for industry education, Shorthorn networking, and just having some fun surrounded by good people. All these events plus other projects on the horizon make 2024 an exciting year for America’s First. What a year it has been, both on and off the job. I’m thankful for the great Shorthorn people who make this position an enjoyable endeavor. May you and your family have a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and best wishes as we head into 2024! God Bless, The Woolfolk Family

In the Know

Upcoming Show Reminders We made it to the other side of the fall shows, and if you’re like me, you’re ready to hibernate! Easy on the rest though, January brings a full schedule of events for ASA! As we gear up for the winter national shows, it is important to go over the check list for each. Many of you will be making the trek to Oklahoma City for our 2nd Super National of the year at the 4th Annual Cattlemen’s Congress. Cattlemen’s Congress (CC) has easily become one of our largest shows and this year brings excitement as we unveil our inaugural E.D.G.E. Shorthorn Show. Stalling requests are processed with entries; CC provides very specific instructions found on their website to ensure you have the best chance of getting your request. If you have Cattlemen’s Congress questions, please send those to Cassie (cassie@shorthorn.org) for tie show and Wade (wade@shorthorn.org) for the E.D.G.E. or pen show. A schedule for Cattlemen’s Congress can be found in the News & Notes section.

National Western Stock Show (NWSS) comes in next in our schedule for National shows. If you have not entered, late entries will be considered until December 20th. Over the last two years, NWSS has made tremendous progress toward their new facilities, we anticipate this year being nothing less. Returning this year is “The Summit at Denver” National Shorthorn Sale. If you will be making both shows, reach out to Wade or Cassie if you need help with schedules. Find a schedule for NWSS on the News & Notes in this issue. Closing out January finds our crew at Fort Worth Stock Show (FWSS). Unique to FWSS, ownership on open animals must match the exhibitor name on the entries sent to FWSS. This ownership will be evaluated at check-in. The owner and/or exhibitor is not required to be the showman on open show day. Be sure to transfer any animals to the exhibitor prior to the ownership deadline. A schedule for FWSS is located with the

other show schedules in the News & Notes. Dixie Nationals in Jackson, Miss. Wraps up our show season with the final National Show. Entries should open December 1st, and close January 22nd. The open show will be held Saturday, February 10th. This is a laid-back show that many exhibitors attend to collect show points to secure their year-end placing. We anticipate many to return, and more to enter! A complete schedule can be found in the News & Notesr. As a reminder, please let us know if you will not be attending a show you have entered to allow us to reallocate tie spaces, we appreciate your cooperation to ensure a good experience for all. We look forward to seeing you at upcoming events! Should you need anything as you prepare, we are happy to assist you with your needs. Happy Holidays from ASA, we look forward to seeing everyone as we ring in 2024.

Show Points Show points are on DigitalBeef for your review. The “Show Points” page can be found on the left-hand menu as the last option. Follow the screenshot to get the most out of this tool. Points are uploaded as results are processed by staff following each show. Contact Wade or Cassie if you have any questions.

Some of my family and I’s favorite holiday traditions are celebrating the birth of Jesus, decorating the Christmas tree, spending time with family, and my most favorite part of all is sitting on the couch, drinking hot chocolate, and watching Christmas movies. Speaking of Christmas movies, we all know that the junior board loves to watch movies. So, let’s have some fun! Guess below which junior board member, to their favorite holiday movie. Words of Advice

“But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people.”- Luke 2:10

As I write my last article as an AJSA board member, I would like to thank everyone who has stuck by my side over the last three years. I have had a blast being able to serve such an amazing breed that has made a significant impact on my life! With that being said, November has brought us so many great things to be thankful for, such as rain, cooler weather, NAILE, and Thanksgiving. This year at NAILE, our Deck the Stalls Extravaganza was an absolute success. From the donors who donated items to the amazing buyers, we wouldn’t be where we are today without you, thank you! As much fun as November was, my favorite time of the year has finally come

Tartan Plaid

MacKenna 2023-24 National Geeseman Shorthorn Lassie Queen

Life Changing Opportunity When I was crowned National Lassie Queen in June at the AJSA Show and Youth Conference in Iowa, I knew I was being provided a life changing opportunity! Let me tell you, the first several months have not been disappointing! My name is MacKenna Geeseman and I am the fourth generation to raise Shorthorn and Shorthorn composite cattle at Lakeside Farm in Evart Michigan. I have attended MI State University and am currently employed full time near the farm. My family and I have a successful freezer beef business complemented by the opportunity to market a small group of heifer and steer calves each fall to juniors who have an interest in showing. Since leaving Des Moines in June, I have had the opportunity to promote Shorthorn cattle at multiple events around the State. Highlights of my summer and early fall included being a part of the Michigan Livestock Expo champion ceremonies as well as providing service at the Michigan State Fair. September brought the start of sale season, and I was able to participate in the Heart of Michigan Club Calf Tour as well as the Great Shorthorn Revival. The consignors at the Revival as well as members of the Michigan Shorthorn

Breeders Association were generous and provided many silent auction items to benefit my travel and I am so grateful to all who have helped. In addition to the fall sales, I have had an opportunity to get a new group of spring heifer calves ready and out into the show ring for a few early shows here in Michigan. As I write this article, we are packing to head to Louisville for the North American Livestock Exposition. I am excited to be ringside at the NAILE Junior shows as well as leading in the classes at the Super National Shorthorn & Shorthorn Plus Bull and Female show. As soon as the holidays wrap we will head to Oklahoma for the events at Cattlemen’s Congress, followed quickly by a trip to Denver for the NWSS and last on my travel plans for January is to attend the Stock Show in Fort Worth! Please look me up to say hello! I cannot thank everyone enough for supporting me in the journey as National Lassie Queen. This has been a dream come true! Supporting and promoting the breed that has given me so much is an honor. I encourage every young lady to consider being a State Lassie Queen. The opportunities are endless and have been so fulfilling! I am proud to wear the tartan and would be happy to talk to

you about attending your event! Please reach out if I can help promote your Shorthorn event.

American Shorthorn Association 2023 Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet The 2023 Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet was a slightly different format this year than in the past; with the highest attendance we’ve had in some time. Holding this event in conjunction with the American Royal, allowed attendees to either participate in the show or spend the day watching the breed in the ring. The event kicked off on the evening of October 21 at the ASA office with a social for breeders to gather and enjoy the company of new and old friends. From the perspective of the ASA staff, it is so enjoyable to see the office overflowing from wall to wall with breeders. During the Annual Meeting on the morning of October 22, 2023, more than 100 members from 24 states gathered at the Hilton Kansas City Airport to elect new ASA board members, learn about the state of the association and receive awards. Delegates and attendees convened to listen to Montie D. Soules, Executive Secretary/CEO of ASA, share the State of the Association. This included Key Performance Indicators, finances, and other association updates including the introduction of the 2024 ASA Symposium in Kentucky. After the report, the nominating committee submitted three candidates

22

for the available board positions. Tyler Cates from Ind., Cory Bollum from Minn., and Mark Gordon from Ill. All three will serve a three-year term; Cates and Cory will serve their first term; Gordon will serve his second term. The board elected new officers for the ninemember board. The new president of the board is Toby Jordan of Ind. The vicepresident is Lee Miller of Ohio and the executive director is John Sonderman of Neb. They serve alongside Jeff Bedwell of Okla., John Russell of Texas, and Rick Osterday of South Dakota. We want to extend a thank you to John Sonderman for retiring as the 2022-2023 ASA President, it is not an easy job and he served as a great fearless leader. Joe Bales and Dave Greenhorn also deserve a huge thank you as they both retired from their six-year terms on the board. These two put many hours of dedication into serving the breed. Following the election of board members, attendees heard updates from junior activities, the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund Foundation, the Shorthorn Foundation, and several other committees. After the meeting adjourned, attendees enjoyed a small break for more socializing before a steak luncheon was served.

Shelby director of youth activities, Diehm director of marketing & communications

Following the luncheon, attendees listened to motivational speaker, Matt Booth. He encouraged positivity in daily life. He is the Author of a #1 Amazon Best Seller, Basically Incredible. The final event of the day was the awards presentation. Breeders who registered more than 100 head in a fiscal year were given the Century Club Award. Next, animal owners received certificates for Performance Animals that met certain qualifications. The National and Regional Show Winners for 2022-2023 were recognized with leather banners and metal awards. The final presentations of the evening were special recognition awards. This year the Heritage Awards went to Mary Hinton Bass and Bryan & Marti Warner. The Merit Award recognized Alan K. Sears. The Builders of the Breed were Ward Bakenhus, Bill Bales & Joe Bales, and Rick Leone & Family. In 2024, the ASA Annual Meeting will be October 26 in Kansas City, Missouri with a similar format for the meeting and awards. Make plans to join us next summer for education and fun at the ASA Symposium in Kentucky on July 18-20, 2024.

Heritage Award 2023

Mary Bass

The Shorthorn Heritage Award recognizes Shorthorn members who have shown exceptional leadership for Shorthorn activities in a state or regional area. These honorees are persons that have shown exceptional passion in all areas of the breed. Award recipients have promoted the breed by taking leadership roles within their respective geographical areas. They are individuals that can be given credit to helping with the longterm success of the breed at any level. They have attended functions, been a mainstay, and have shown their passion and love for the breed and the people in the breed. A Heritage Award winner is a true Shorthorn enthusiast who has positively impacted the breed to the benefit of all Shorthorn breeders.

In 1961, Rufus Hinton bought his daughter Mary her first Shorthorn heifer from T.P. Coburn of Blum, Texas, to show in the 4-H Club. This began an ongoing 62-year span of her being actively involved in the show ring and promoting the love of her life, her Shorthorn cattle. During her eight years in 4-H she showed steers and heifers all over central Texas, making many friends in the process. In 1967 she was a charter member of the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association and later served three years as secretary/treasurer. She was one of four area princesses elected in 1968 to promote Shorthorns and was selected Texas Shorthorn Lassie Queen in 1969. She represented Texas in the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen Contest at the Chicago International Livestock Exposition in the fall of 1969. In 1973, the American Shorthorn Association honored her as Outstanding Junior Breeder. While attending Tarleton State University she met J.O. Bass, and they were married in 1977 after which they moved her herd of cattle to his family farm in west Texas and called it MJ Shorthorns. At this time her cattle were mostly red and straight beef blood, even though TPS Coronet Leader 21st x had been used A.I. in the 1970s. She had used Great White Hope semen and had a couple of good white calves. MJS Mahon’s Hope x, born July 17, 1977, was the first bull sold by MJ Shorthorns at the 1979 5-state Shorthorn Sale in Guymon, OK. They then purchased a Columbus son, Hart’s Columbus x from Hart Farms, Waxahachie, Texas. He put a lot more size and color in their calf crop. Next came two half-Irish bulls from Alden Farms in Missouri and a Sutherland Irish Jack son from 7M Polled Shorthorns in Texas. They were able to increase their cow herd to 40 head and showed at all five shows in Texas for many years, always taking six head so they could show in all the group classes. In 1981 she was elected secretary/treasurer of the Texas Shorthorn Association. One of her duties was compiling the state membership directory and mailing copies to the 254 county extension offices and 1,100 FFA Chapters in Texas. She mailed Texas Shorthorn Association newsletters to a mailing list of around 500 people four times a year. She also took the Texas Shorthorn Association display to the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association trade show in San Antonio, Fort Worth, and the Amarillo Farm & Ranch Show. In 1985 she and J.O. took the display to the New Mexico Cattle Growers Convention in Albuquerque, N.M. In an effort to promote Shorthorns in New Mexico, she took cattle to the New Mexico State Fair. Mary served six years on the board of the National Shorthorn Lassies, serving two years as president. During this time, she wrote a monthly article for the Shorthorn World. She was honored as National Lassie of the Year in

1985. Their son James was born in 1986 but this didn’t slow down the show schedule. Many times, they would tie a rope around the back of his overalls and tie him to the end of the tack box, while they worked on the cattle. In the 80’s and 90’s the couple managed many sales in the area, the 5-state Shorthorn sale in Oklahoma, the Cowtown Classic Shorthorn Sale at the Fort Worth Stock Show, and the Texas Shorthorn Association Sale. They never charged a commission for managing any of these sales. In 1985 Mary left the secretary office and moved to the publicity office. She worked with Linda Kahoa on a Texas/Oklahoma newsletter. She also sent TSA directories and Shorthorn literature to the Houston Livestock Show Calf Scramble office to go in the packets that calf scramble winners receive. News releases of upcoming Shorthorn activities and show results were mailed to livestock publications. In 1996 the couple was very honored to receive the Builder of the Breed Award from the American Shorthorn Association. In 1993, son James, age 7, entered the show ring at the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association preview show in Lubbock with ‘Kandy.’ She wasn’t the best heifer, but a gentle one that he could handle. When he turned 9 and joined 4-H, his official show career began and the MJS show career slowed down. Things changed in the late 90’s as J.O. quit his farming operation and Mary had to greatly reduce the cow numbers and they both got 8-5 jobs in town. This didn’t slow Mary down much as she still made junior shows with her son James and served on the boards of several area prospect shows. She also took on the role of secretary of the local 4-H/FFA stock show. She just recently gave up her place as publicity officer of the Texas Shorthorn Association after approximately 30 years. The couple got a very nice surprise when the National Shorthorn Show in Fort Worth was dedicated to them in 2020. She now spends her time helping the step-grandson, who is eleven years old and is doing well in his third year of showing Shorthorn cattle. Just last month she visited with a young man from Honduras who is a graduate student at Texas Tech University. He was taking pictures of her cattle at the South Plains Fair, so she struck up a conversation. He had been to Houston last spring and had visited V8 Ranch and met Jim Williams. So, Mary told him Jim’s daughters had shown Shorthorns because they were gentler than Brahmans. Mary hopes to be around long enough to get granddaughter, Brittyn (age 5) and grandson, Langston (age 3) started in the Shorthorn business. She has spent most all of the last 62 years showing and promoting Shorthorn cattle but, on top of that, has made a great many good friends from all over this great country. Congratulations to Mary on receiving this award.

Bryan Warner grew up in Weld County, Colorado. His family was involved in farming and trucking. He, his sister, and brother had 4-H projects, steers, and pigs, which they showed at the Adams County Fair in Brighton, CO. .Bryan’s dad owned and operated Semi trucks and trailers. That was a big part of Bryan’s life. When he was old enough to get his CDL driver license, Bryan became a very good overthe-road truck driver. He has driven from coast to coast and hauled a wide variety of freight. Marti grew up in a small community in Moran, Wyoming. Her parents, Walt and Betty Feuz, were strong Christian ranchers who raised Hereford cattle. Marti and her three sisters were very involved in ranch activities, from haying to handling and herding cattle with their horses. They were active in 4-H, showing Hereford steers from their dad’s herd and they learned to judge livestock. After graduating from Jackson High School in 1969, Marti attended the University of Wyoming and earned a degree in Physical Education. She taught one year of school at Basin, WY, and decided that teaching was not for her, so she took a night class in basic bookkeeping. A college friend and Marti decided to move to Denver where she worked as an accounting clerk for various companies. In 1985 Bryan and Marti met. He was driving over the road and she was a clerk for the same trucking company. They got married on June 29, 1985, and their journey together began. In 1987 Bryan bought his first Semi Truck and Trailer. They have their US DOT authority to haul freight on their own. Bryan has been a proud owner of several trucks and trailers. This was the beginning of their life motto: “Nothing ventured – Nothing gained” With help from a friend who was a real estate agent, the Warner’s began their adventure of buying and selling “fixer-upper” properties. Their last property in Colorado was a small farm near Ft. Lupton, CO. That farm allowed them to raise a few cattle and grow their own hay. In 1996 they attended the National Western Stock Show in Denver. There was a cattle sale that was about to start so they decided to watch. It was a Shorthorn sale. They went home with two Shorthorn heifers! They were the beginning of their Shorthorn herd. They bought their first Shorthorn bull at the 1997 NWSS sale. He was CHR First Watch, from Ralph Holloway. In 1998, and in years that followed, they bought bred cows and heifers from Bakenhus Shorthorns, in Columbus, NE. In 2002 the real estate market in Colorado was booming so Bryan and Marti decided to move to Wyoming. They bought a farm near Riverton, WY. Bryan was no longer driving over the road, but the truck and trailers are really important equipment. This has been their life for the last 21 years. They have pasture for cattle and grow hay for feed and to sell. The cattle have pasture to graze in the summer and in the winter, they graze the third cut hay on the fields.

shorthorn country • december 2023

Hay is supplemented when needed. They also have a small herd of Hereford cows, and some Simmental cattle. Because the Warner’s had room to grow, they bought Shorthorn heifers from Ward Bakenhus, in Columbus, NE. Their cattle were the foundation of the Warner herd. They also bought females from sales in Iowa and Texas. At Warner Ranch Shorthorns the cows are managed like commercial cattle. They have been selected and culled on structural correctness, fertility, disposition, and udder and feet quality. They have focused on calving ease and maternal strength. Bryan and Marti expect a cow to raise a calf every year and to maintain her condition efficiently. In their program, they feel that a great bull is the best investment they can make for the future of their herd. They have had some outstanding herd bulls walking the pastures. In 2005 they attended the Black Hills Stock Show, in Rapid City, SD and bought the Champion Shorthorn bull from Ward Bakenhus, Ar Su Lu Massive 3140. This bull made and still makes a great impact on their herd. His offspring are always their best and thickest cattle. In 2010 they attended the NWSS in Denver and made friends with Peter and Christine Boake, of Alta Cedar Shorthorns, from Alberta, Canada. They were exhibiting some excellent Shorthorn heifers and bulls. Bryan attended their sale the following April and bought two Shorthorn bulls: Alta Cedar Code Red 62W, and Creekside Amp 32W. Those bulls have had a strong influence on the Warner cattle. They were true beef cattle with lots of natural muscle. .The Warners’s have bought other Canadian Shorthorn bulls from Muridale Shorthorns, in Saskatchewan, Canada. Muridale Skoll 38Y and Muridale Rawhide 6E were deep-bodied bulls with plenty of muscle. They have added real quality and thickness to the cattle in their herd. In years past they have been involved in showing and selling at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. They took cattle to the Cattlemen’s Classic, in Kearney, NE for several years. They have shown and sold yearling bulls and heifers, exhibiting several Champions and Reserve Champions, at the Black Hills Stock Show at Rapid City, SD every year since 2008, and plan to be there again in 2024. In 2013 they started the Fall Harvest Sale at Columbus, NE with the help and participation of fellow Shorthorn breeders and the management of their friend Alan Sears. It was an annual sale for ten years. Their last sale was on Sept. 25, 2022. The Warner’s have received the Century Award in 2010 and 2011 from The American Shorthorn Association for registering 100 calves or more. In 2021 they sold part of their farm. They have built a new home and shop and are still in the process of building cattle sheds. They thank God for bringing them there and taking them on this amazing journey. As they have been recalling the events of their past years, they realize that the greatest gift in their involvement in the American Shorthorn Association has been the friends that they now have. Seeing people, they have known over the years is always such a blessing and honor. They thank God for every one of you. Bryan and Marti want to express their gratitude to the ASA board for choosing them for this award.

Merit Award 2023 The Shorthorn Merit Award recognizes individuals who support and promote the cattle industry. This award honors those beef cattle industry leaders who have specifically assisted and had a positive influence on the Shorthorn breed. These individuals have been exceptional supporters and dedicated friends of the Shorthorn breed for many years.

Alan K. Sears

Alan K. Sears grew up on a small farm in Greencastle, Indiana. He was a member of 4-H for ten years and FFA for four years. His first beef project was a red Shorthorn heifer purchased at the Indiana Shorthorn Association Blue Ribbon in Lebanon, Indiana. After that first Shorthorn heifer, he was hooked on the breed. Shorthorn cattle and the Purebred Beef industry became his passion. Sears attended Purdue University obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science. While at Purdue he was on the Livestock Judging and Meats Judging team, a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, Chairman of Purdue Royal and President of the Block and Bridle Club. After graduation, Alan was hired to work at the American Shorthorn Association in 1977 to run the junior activities and field representative duties. In the early 1980s, he helped merge the youth conference and junior national show into one event for a great week-long family vacation. Sears also worked with other youth activity directors to create Youth Beef Industry Council, which brought together the junior boards from various associations for leadership, education, and socialization. By 1982, Sears was spending more of his time managing field staff and helping with the magazine and he passed over the junior activity duties. In 1987, Sears was hired as the Livestock Sales Director at Drovers Journal in Kansas where he worked for the next three years. After leaving Drovers, he then went to work for another breed association for three years. He was hired as the Director of Marketing for the North American Limousin Foundation in Englewood, Colorado. He led many marketing efforts for the breed in his short time on staff. Sears made his way back to the Shorthorn breed in 1993 when he was hired as the Managing Publisher of the Shorthorn Country magazine in Omaha, Nebraska. He enjoyed getting back to his Shorthorn roots as he managed the magazine until 1997. After his time at the Shorthorn Country, he became a field editor and advertising

representative for Western Livestock Reporter in Billings, Montana where he worked until 2001. He then became the Director of Sales and marketing for Deiter Bros., in Faulkton, South Dakota until he began working as the General Manager for Five Star Cattle Systems, LLC in Loveland, Colorado in 2006. He worked there until 2008. In 2008, Sears returned to Western Ag Reporter where he advised purebred producers on advertising and marketing issues whose primary target market is commercial cow/ calf segment of the beef industry. He sells advertising business and attends over 100 bull sales annually. He continues to work as field editor and advertising representative for Western Ag Reporter. Sears also began his own business in 2008, Sears Marketing Service, LLC. He provides sale management, genetic and marketing consultation services to seedstock producers in the United States and Canada. You can often find him at different Shorthorn sales across the U.S., because as he said, he has a passion for the Shorthorn breed and Purebred industry. Alan and his wife Diane reside in Eaton, Colorado, where he continues his business of helping seedstock producers in many different ways. Sears has contributed not only to the Shorthorn breed over the years but the cattle industry as a whole. The merit award is given to recognize individuals that are not Shorthorn breeders who support and promote the cattle industry. This award honors those beef cattle industry leaders who have specifically assisted and had a positive influence on the Shorthorn breed. These individuals have been exceptional supporters and dedicated friends of the Shorthorn breed for many years. This describes Alan K. Sears and shows why he is deserving of his recognition.

Ward Bakenhus Edward (Ward) Bakenhus was born into the famous Ar Su Lu Shorthorn program located near Columbus, Nebraska. Ward became involved at a young age, not only in the day-to-day operation of the diversified cattle and crop operation, but also in the National Junior Shorthorn Association participating at State and National Shows. Upon graduating from college, Ward returned home to the Family operation and contributed full-time to the development and success of the Ar Su Lu herd. Ward led the family operation to exhibit annually at the National Western Stock Show in the Yards Shows for many years. They exhibited very competitive bulls for several years and hold a very special record at the National Western Stock Show. The Bakenhus Ar Su Lu Shorthorn operation has exhibited more Pen Show Champion Pens (26 wins) than any other firm from any breed exhibited at the National Western, a record that still stands today. The program successfully exhibited cattle at other National Shows including NAILE, American Royal, and National Junior Show. When asked, Ward says that his most meaningful win was when he showed and won with Ar Su Lu Lace at Denver right before he went home to start dialysis for kidney failure. Some of his other memorable wins were when they won Overall Breeding Heifer at the Nebraska State Fair, his first win at the pen show in Denver and his oldest son, Josh winning Reserve Champion Purebred Heifer at Jr. Nationals held in Wichita Falls, Tx in 1996. As the genetic pool grew, the Bakenhus’ began to hold an Annual Fall Female Sale and an Annual Bull Sale. The Female Sale always featured some of the best cow

families in the Shorthorn Breed. The Bull Sales featured the offering of the National Western Pen Champions and a very solid set of commercial oriented bulls for their strong customer base. The Dottie, Lady Fool, Brenda, Super Lass, Flossie, Meg, Lace and Obsession cow families are synonymous with the Bakenhus herd and are just a few that many will remember. Bulls such as Mike’s Cujo, Gizmo, Pattern, Ladd, Common Sense, Gold Spear and many more roamed the gentle hills north of Columbus. Tonic, 38 Special, Vinnie, Massive, Osage, Master Plan, Kool, Moonshine and Vann made their impact in other Shorthorn programs. Ward sold the bull Golden Spike to Shadybrook Shorthorns in Canada. He enjoyed being able to contribute to Shorthorn Genetics outside of the United States. Ward was the owner of Tex Rider Eagle, a triple crown winner at The National Western Stock Show, NAILE, and the American Royal. Ward was a contributor to the Nebraska Shorthorn Association serving on the board for several terms and American Shorthorn Association serving on the Board of Directors for two terms. Ward has been a fixture in the Shorthorn breed. When Ward speaks, other breeders pay attention. Ward currently resides on the Family Farm with his wife Shay north of Columbus, Nebraska. Children include Josh and his wife Andrea and children Gage and Ellison; Jacob and his wife Shelby and children Nash and Trenedy; Macy; and Levi and his wife Chantel and children Mabel and Lyla.

Builder of the Breed 2023

Bill Bales & Joe Bales Hillside Farm, Bill and Joe Bales, Morristown, TN, has been involved with the Shorthorn breed for over 100 years, tracing back to the 1890’s. The farm focuses on raising seedstock that are practical and profitable, balancing a sound, eye-appealing structure with generations of predictable performance. Growing up on the farm, Bill started his involvement in the Shorthorn breed exhibiting steers in the local 4-H and FFA shows. A banker by profession for nearly 50 years, he ultimately assumed responsibility for the family farm and cattle herd and stays active in their management today. An active proponent of youth livestock events, he has served the industry at the local, state, and national levels. He helped manage the Morristown Steer Show, which for many years was one of the largest steer shows in Tennessee, securing sponsorships and buyers for the event. He created, organized, and managed the Bank of Commerce’s bull leasing program that provided local breeders with access to superior seed stock with a manageable investment. Following his retirement, he served for several years on the state’s Livestock Marketing and Dealers Board, overseeing the state’s livestock sales. A lifetime member of the American Shorthorn Association, he served the state association as both an officer and director. An active supporter and promoter of the breed, Hillside Farm has marketed cattle through the Tennessee Beef Agribition and Tennessee State Shorthorn Sale, The National Shorthorn Sale in Denver, the Shorthorn Polled Congress, the original Southern Stars Sales, and other national and regional sales. During his children’s AJSA and 4-H careers, cattle were successfully exhibited nationally and regionally, producing a number of AllAmericans. Their greatest achievements were Joe’s exhibiting the Champion female at the 1980 North American International Livestock Expo and Reserve Champion at the 1979 Junior Nationals. They were also partners in TNT Fastrak 4U, the National Champion Bull. Long a believer that “show stock” and “performance stock” did not have to be different, one of their All Americans, “Excitement” sold to progressive breeders the Repp family and Sno-vue Shorthorns, where

he sired top-selling range bulls from the Cow Palace to Red Bluff for a number of years. Like his father, Joe grew up on the family farm and got his start with Shorthorns by showing Shorthorn steers locally. Ultimately adding heifers to their show experiences, he and his brother and sister exhibited Shorthorns across the Southeast and nationally. His experiences with the Shorthorn breed led him to being named a National 4-H Beef Project winner in 1977. At the University of Tennessee, he was a member of their winning livestock judging and evaluation teams, finishing as a top 10 individual at the National Judging Contest. Following his undergraduate career, he became the Judging Team Coach at UT, while earning his Master’s degree. He has judged major breed shows in over 25 states. While his current position as Vice President for Advancement at Middle Tennessee State University precludes daily activities on the farm, he remains responsible for the selection and genetic management of the herd. Also, a lifetime member of the ASA and a former Board Member and Vice President of the AJSA, Joe has served multiple terms as President and Vice President of the Tennessee Shorthorn Association and is currently a Director of the state association. A current member of the ASA Board of Directors, he is the immediate past President of the Association and has previously served as Vice President and Chair of the Finance Committee. During his time as President, he led a strategic planning process that led to the development of a long-range strategic plan for the ASA. He is serving on the inaugural board of the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund, the new fundraising entity supporting our Juniors and the Junior National. Truly a family operation, the involvement of the entire family, including Bill’s late wife Mary Lynn and Joe’s family (wife Valerie, children, Lauren and Will) and siblings Thom (wife – Karin and son, Theo) and Mary Ann (husband – Tom Rush and children Caty Palmer (Robbie) and Ben), have all played an important part of the farm’s success.

Builder of the Breed 2023

Rick Leone & Family The Leone Family acquired their first Shorthorn in 1976 as part of Rick Leone’s involvement in 4-H. Peak View Eliza the 4th was purchased at the Rocky Mountain Shorthorn Sale in Denver, Colorado. She was bred and sold by Lyle and Vernon Cooksey of Roggen, Colorado. The Peak View prefix then went unused until 1990 when the Leone family began to use it and later registered the prefix. Peak View Ranch sets in view of many of Colorado’s mountains which made the prefix a great fit. Peak View Ranch also purchased foundation females from KaBa Ranch including Len Ru Ta Leader’s daughters and Maine-influenced cattle and females from Shalimar Ranch. Herd sires were purchased from Leveldale, Homedale, Byland, and later females from Leveldale, Sullivan, and Cates Farms. Peak View Ranch succeeded because of the contributions of time, talent, and labor provided by members of the Leone family. Rick’s passion for the breed has been reflected by a lifelong commitment to service and stewardship. Rick exhibited cattle at county, state, and national levels as a youth. He served as President of the Rocky Mountain Shorthorn Association during his time attending Colorado State University and majoring in animal science from 19811984. Rick attended vet school there and after working in Nebraska for two years returned home to help manage and work for the growing family ranch. While serving as a mixed animal veterinarian for his local community Rick performed extensive artificial insemination and embryo transfer work for the ranch and does so still today. In addition to his family operation, Rick became involved in serving the National Shorthorn Association in multiple roles. He served as committee chair for the Appendix Registry Committee in the 1990s. Rick and his father John had purchased Red Angus females and actively used Red Angus genetics in the appendix program and continue to this day. Rick served on the Genetic Improvement Committee in the early 2000s. He served in various positions such as President, Vice president, and treasurer of the State Association from 1990 to the present. Rick served on the board of directors for the American Shorthorn Association for six years including serving as President from 2019 to 2020. Rick married Trish in 1996 and she quickly became another asset for the ranch, breeding and providing ranch horses for the entire family. Trish attended field days, prepped sale and show cattle, and exhibited at shows from days of strollers to the present. Trish works alongside Rick and the family branding, riding, delivering calves, doing books, cooking, and, like many of us, doing anything else that needs done. Trish has been the 4-H leader for the local area club for the past 15 years. She also coordinates and delivers locker beef as part of the Shorthorn beef program for the ranch. Gabriella Leone was born in 1999. From a very young age, it was clear she shared her family’s passion. Gabri exhibited and promoted Shorthorn cattle at county, state, and national levels. Gabri attended Kansas State University where she very successfully judged wool, meats, and livestock. Gabri won the highly competitive meat animal evaluation contest in 2021 and was an all-American. Gabri served on the junior board including vice president in 2021. Gabri is an outstanding fitter, showman, and evaluator and has greatly

helped to improve the cattle and genetics of Peak View Ranch and the breed. She exhibited multiple national champions during her youth tenure. Gabri currently is attending medical school in Kansas City, Missouri, and is still very involved in the family operation. Val Leone was born in 2002. He also exhibited Shorthorns at county, state, and national levels. Val judged livestock in 4-H very successfully and earned Supreme Beef Exhibitor several years in Otero County. Val has worked multiple summers freeze branding the ranch calf crop, riding, running the chute and repairing and building new fence. Val has greatly elevated the physical properties of the ranch. He has a great love and understanding of the ecosystem that the ranch occupies including soil health. He attends Chadron State College as a biology major and is very involved in the family operation. Both Gabri and Val work each spring and early summer synchronizing recipients and implementing the extensive embryo transfer program for Peak View Ranch. Both frequently help exhibit and promote Peak View Ranch cattle at shows including the NILE, Royal, Oklahoma City, National Western Stock Show, and Fort Worth Stock Show as well as help with the annual Peak View Ranch Production Sale in April. Gabri and Val each help procure new genetics and make breeding decisions for the ranch. As a family, the Leones have attended multiple junior nationals and both children have received American Shorthorn Association Scholarships. The ranch has had multiple regional and national show animals of the year. The Leone family enjoys mentoring and helping other youth begin their own operations and become involved in the Shorthorn breed. Besides his service to the American Shorthorn Association, Rick coaches the Arkansas Valley judging team which he has done for the last 12 years. Gabri and Rick both judge at county and state shows. Rick is the Shorthorn youth coordinator for The Breed Bash, a multi-breed youth show in Colorado, and organizes the events of educational contests such as quiz bowl, salesmanship, and speech contest. The Leone Family is a strong advocate of performance testing and strongly supports the value and use of EPDs and genomics. Peak View Ranch was enrolled in SPR (Shorthorn Performance Records) in the 1970s and 1980s and later became a whole herd reporter when DigitalBeef was founded. Peak View Ranch enrolled heifers in the Heifer Genomic Program including tests at Iowa State University for its duration. Peak View Ranch also did shedding scores and genomics to support the shedding study supported by the American Shorthorn Association. Peak View Ranch has been a many-time Century Club recipient. Peak View has had multiple Performance and Pacer Dams and Sires over the years. Peak View Ranch also participated in feedlot trials in Nebraska, earning Champion Pen and Highest Dollar Return Steer. The ranch also participated in the Tri-County feedlot test for the duration of the years the association coordinated the program. The Leone family collectively have served and expressed a great passion for the breed, the people, and the association. They are humbled and honored to be recognized this year for “Builders of the Breed” and extend a heartfelt thank you to other breeders for their support and encouragement.

News & Notes Farewells On October 16, 2023, God called Martin (Marty) Earle Stanley home. He passed away at Canyon Creek Memory Care in Billings, Montana. He was the son of Orville and Harriet (Banister) Stanley born in Bismarck, North Dakota on April 3, 1953. Marty grew up on the family stock farm at Kintyre, North Dakota, where they raised registered Shorthorn cattle, sheep and swine, dryland hay, grain, and corn. He was the oldest of four brothers and worked alongside his Dad and Uncle Alvin in all aspects of the farm. There was a rule that the last boy to get outside for chores had to stay in the house to help their mother. Marty rarely was the one to stay in the house. As a youth he participated in 4-H, cattle shows, FFA serving as a State Officer, and the American Junior Shorthorn Association. Upon graduation from Napoleon High School, Marty attended college at North Dakota State University in Fargo and was a member of Alpha Gamma Roe Fraternity, Saddle & Sirloin Club, Rodeo Club, and University 4-H. While attending school he worked at the University’s Beef and Sheep Barn. Roger Jacobs worked with Marty at the Beef Barn and said that chores started at 5:30 a.m. and Marty prided himself in always being the first at work, had the coffee on, and was mixing feed for the show cattle before anyone else showed up. He was on the University’s Junior and Senior Livestock Judging teams and participated in contest at the Chicago International where the team won the sheep judging division, Fort Worth Stock Show, Kansas City Royal, National Western Stock Show and others. Marty loved livestock judging and was always 80

one of the top scorers on the team. Marty enjoyed fitting and showing cattle and loved his Shorthorns. In 1974 Marty was elected President of the American Junior Shorthorn Association. He served as the Manager of the Bison Stampede Intercollegiate Rodeo. Even with all the extra curriculum work and activities, Marty graduated in three and half years with a degree in Animal Science with an emphasis in animal nutrition. Upon graduation, he was asked by the Governor to be a Vo Ag Teacher due to a shortage of Ag Teachers. He taught Vo Ag at New Rockford, North Dakota for a year. He spent two years as the Agriculture Extension Agent for Benson County, Minnewaukan, North Dakota, where he enjoyed team roping with his good friend Alvin Nelson and others. He also had successful cattle fitting and showing business. In 1979, Marty moved to Miles City, Montana, to work at the USDA Livestock and Range Research Station as a Research Assistant managing the feedlot, feedmill, and animal care/ hospital. He managed the Station’s Line 1 Hereford Herd and produced the annual sale. It was at the Station where Marty met his future bride, Kathryn Burkhart. They were married on August 16, 1980. They lived on the Station until November 1982. L.F. McCullom (Mac) hired him to manage his Scattered Oaks Ranch in Bleiblerville, Texas. Mac told Marty that he was authorized to borrow all the money he needed. He was also authorized to pay the loan back. Marty did just that, growing the ranch from a yearly budget of $250,000 to $2.5 million, always paying the loans back. He managed two European importations of seedstock working hand in hand with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the French government and going to France to hand select the cattle to be imported. Many foreign dignitaries were hosted by Marty at Scattered Oaks Ranch including

the President of Finland, Princess Anne of Great Britian, and the Prime Minster and Agriculture Minster of Turkey. Marty and crew showed Scattered Oaks’ cattle from coast to coast and Canada, winning several prestigious shows. He served on the Board and as President of the American Salers Association during his tenure at Scattered Oaks. Marty was asked to judge the Royal Easter Show in Sydney, Australia, the 1987 National Junior Shorthorn Show, and many other state and national shows. After Mac sold Scattered Oaks, the family returned to Montana, with a couple additions, son Matthew Adam born in 1983, and daughter Meghan Elizabeth joining the family in 1987. Marty worked for AgriBasic West Feeds and later was hired to manage the U.A.P. Seed Company. When he retired from the seed company, he began his fall adventure with the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks as a Hunting Access Technician. His territory extended from Pompeys Pillar, down to Hardin and back to Abasarokee. Marty stayed at home until January 2023, when he entered memory care. He joined Canyon Creek Memory Care in August. The family will be forever grateful to the staff at Canyon Creek for making Marty’s last months so wonderful. They not only took excellent care of Marty; they treated the entire family as part of theirs. Marty is survived by his wife Kathryn of 43 years, his son Matthew (Adri), daughter Meghan (Don). He is also survived by his brothers, Curt (Karla) their children Ross (Leah) and Mimi; brother Tom (Deb) and Mikaela (Dallas) and the many members of his beloved wife’s family who became his. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and brother Orville John; and his father and motherin-law, Bud & Mary.

Lloyd “Tiny” Stone, 94, of Sullivan, passed away Monday, October 30th, 2023, at Odd Fellow Rebekah Home, Mattoon. Tiny was born February 27, 1929, in Sullivan; the son of Claude and Ruth

(Stewart) Stone. He married Ruth Alice Bragg on September 5, 1948, in Sullivan; she preceded him in death on August 24, 2019. He was a retired farmer and raised Purebred Livestock, and exhibited them all over the United States. He is survived by his children, Chris (Brenda) Stone of Toledo and Connie (John) Wise of Bethany; brother, Steve (Kathy) Stone of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Curtis (Lindsey) Wise of

Change to ASA 90-day Past-Due Policy The Board of Directors took some time to review the 90-day past-due policy. After seeing an increase in overdue accounts, a policy change was enacted, which brought about another change regarding membership renewals. First (as of January 1, 2024): Any past due balance over 60 days will automatically put an account on-hold until the full account balance has been paid. As a reminder, this will restrict online access to only being able to pay that balance, as well as no printing of any registration papers is permitted when there is a balance due.

Second (effective immediately): Due to the increase in unpaid membership renewals, (i.e. breeders logging in and renewing their membership and not making payment) membership renewals must be paid at the time of renewal in order to gain online/member access for that calendar year. If a breeder logs in, agrees to renew the membership but then does not pay simultaneously, said membership renewal will be made null and void and deleted the next day.

These policy changes are an effort to maintain fairness for those members who are paying their fees in a timely manner, as well as keep the financial status of the ASA in good order. These new changes are in effect for every single member – whether junior or senior, WHR or TOC – everyone will be treated equally. We appreciate your continued support of the American Shorthorn Association.
