Non-Certificate Bull List In Digital Beef, on the left-hand column, you will find a link that reads Non-Certificate Bulls.

On this link, you will find all bulls that have all DNA testing done for A.I. Sire qualifications; along with their results. You can also download this list as an excel spreadsheet.

For a bull to become non-certificate, ALL DNA requirements for an A.I. Sire must be completed.

Genetic Condition List In Digital Beef, on the left-hand column, you will find a link that reads Genetic Conditions.

On this link, you will find every animal in the registry (both bulls and females) that have been tested for DS, TH and PHA; with their status.

A.I. Certificates In order to have A.I. certificates released on a bull, it must be tested as an A.I. Sire. However, if the bull is deceased, the calf can be tested instead.

WHR Breeders WHR Assessments for 2018 were mailed in November. If you have not received yours, please contact the ASA office as soon as possible.

1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2018 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2018.)

2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) A

s the year draws to a close I want to bring to your attention some activities that affect Shorthorn breeders and membership.

First, it is time to renew your membership for 2018. This can be paid in December or you can wait till after the first of the year.

Please remember after March 1, 2018 your membership becomes delinquent; so take care of this before March. If you use the online registry after January 1, just login; the membership will automatically renew and show the balance due for membership. Remember, you must be a member in order to register animals.

Another major activity this time of the year is WHR assessments. All WHR breeders were mailed an inventory in November. If you did not receive yours please contact the office. Do not delay updating your inventory. It amounts to a considerable savings to complete your inventory in the registry or submit it to the office by January 10th. For each cow assessed, you will receive a free registration for the calf born in 2018 plus 1 free transfer of the calf, if it is completed within 60 days of the sale date.

The cow assessed will receive a free transfer in the 2018 calendar year, if transferred within 60 days of the sale date. The cost is only $16 per head if completed by midnight January 9; the normal fee of $20 is in place from January 10 to February 28. The fee for each cow assessed increases to $25 on March 1. When reviewing your cattle records be sure your entire calf crop is registered before it becomes a year old, otherwise penalties for registering animals over 1 year of age will be added.

Please keep in mind you can only assess 2017 cows until December 15; after this date, 2017 assessments will not be accepted and will default to TOC fees.

These dates are to remind you to be prepared for 2018 and receive all the benefits of being a WHR breeder. It really does pay to participate, as a result your transactions in 2018 will be a breeze.

I truly believe we are “A Family Friendly Breed”! This is the time of the year to take a little time to count and be thankful for our blessings. There are sacrifices that come with being a passionate Shorthorn breeder; whether it is missing a child’s ball game, activities at church and school, going to a sale on your anniversary or missing your spouse’s birthday.

This business is time consuming and all of our families make sacrifices because of it. Take time to thank your family for being part of the Shorthorn Family this holiday season. =

Be SMART Heading into 2018 By the time this issue hits your mail box, we will have wrapped up a very successful ASA Annual Meeting and will be full steam ahead into the Christmas season and the upcoming New Year.

There’s plenty to be done around the farm or ranch this time of year, and that doesn’t even begin to cover all the extra tasks and events that come with Christmas. I’m sure you will feel like there is no time to breathe during the month of December!

For those of us in the cattle business, the end of the year is a good time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the year that lies ahead. Examining how well you met your goals for 2017 while preparing your operation for success in 2018 is a good exercise to keep you on track. Many businesses lay out a strategic plan that outlines future goals and the steps to successfully accomplish those feats. I don’t suggest going as far as building a strategic plan, but having some goals in mind can help guide your operation. I am one who writes down goals and objectives as a reminder of the final destination. This past summer at BIF, one of the speakers laid out some guidelines for setting goals and objectives that I found intriguing and want to share with you. The key is to be S.M.A.R.T. in setting goals for your herd: Specific,

Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.

Specific: It’s important to have goals laid out that you can clearly define what you’re trying to accomplish. It’s a good idea to want to sell more cattle or to utilize genomic testing, but how do you want to achieve that? By stating “Increase bull sales by 3 head” or “Test all replacement heifers with a uLD genomic profile”, you have something concrete to aim for while accomplishing the goal.

Measurable: Thankfully, we measure a lot of things in the cattle business. This one should be easy! If your goal is produce heavier weaning calves, it’s simple to run them across the scales and learn how successful you were at accomplishing that task. Shorter calving seasons, more heifers in the replacement pen, or greater profit are some of the many measurable ways to track your progress.

Achievable: Having a reachable target to aim for is necessary to make progress and actually have some success.

If you have 10 Shorthorn cows, setting a goal of having the most registrations in the breed is likely going to lead to your disappointment when you don’t accomplish that goal. If you want to one day have the largest Shorthorn herd, you might focus on gradual herd expansion over time and one day reach that long

term dream of having the largest herd.

Realistic: It’s important to keep a little perspective when setting your sights on the future. Increasing your average bull calf weaning weight from 550lb to 600lb is feasible and can be done with some management tweaks or a change in genetics. Moving your average weaning weight from 550lb to 900lb is probably not going to happen, no matter how many management and genetic changes you make within your herd. There’s no need to aim for the moon when all you need to do is get to the roof of the barn.

Timely: Putting a deadline on yourself is the best way to apply some pressure to work towards the prize of accomplishing something on your list. If you want to rebuild your working pens next year, set the deadline to complete it by a certain event, such as fall weaning. You’ll be motivated to get it done, and you will get to use those new pens when you work cattle this fall!

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as we head towards 2018. I hope to see you all in Denver, at a sale, or one of the many other Shorthorn events on the 2018 calendar. We’re in a great position to Make Shorthorns Great Again as long as we are SMART about setting our goals.

Grathwohl Honored at the American Royal Livestock Show 2017 National Shorthorn Show

Georgia Loyd, Eddie’s and Lawrence’s sister, Ryan and Nancy Grathwohl Heter, and their children, Josie and Ryder, Rebecca Bacon and her daughter Tayler, and Andy and Robin Grathwohl.

John, Eddie, and Lawrence Grathwohl were life-long Shorthorn breeders. Eddie and Lawrence’s father, John, always had cattle, but it was Eddie, who really grew and developed the Shorthorn side of their operation. In 1959, at 12 years old, he bought his first registered Shorthorn as a 4-H project from Don and Pat Stout. Eventually this 4-H project grew, and he started Deer Trail Ranch in 1978, located in Powhattan, Kan. Eddie started an annual production sale in 1979. This event was held on the third Saturday in October. Eddie was the first President of the Kansas Junior Shorthorn Association and held many offices in the Kansas Shorthorn Association as well.

In 1986, Eddie was named Builder of the Breed. Their breeding for functional, performance-oriented cattle resulted in numerous All-Americans and many Champions for both the Grathwohl Family and buyers from across the country. Deer Trail Ranch was a wellknown exhibitor at PACE and National Shows.

Nancy remembers asking Eddie as a 14

child why they raised Shorthorns, and she will always remember what he told her. He believed that Shorthorns are the best combination of maternal and carcass traits. He said they are great mothers and can perform on grass or grain while not giving up phenotype and eye appeal. He truly loved the breed and spent his life raising Shorthorns until he passed away in 1999 after a 9-month battle with cancer.

Many people will remember John, and how he enjoyed showing his cattle to others. He loved the color of Shorthorns - especially, the dark red roans. He lived outside of Hiawatha, Kan., on Highway 36, and he loved that everyone who drove by would be able to see their cattle from the highway. John was very proud of the quality of cattle his kids raised and how active Eddie was in the Shorthorn breed. He supported his kids and their love of Shorthorns. John also liked to name his calves very unique names, and that is something his grandkids will always remember.

Lawrence grew up showing Shorthorns.

After he graduated from High School

in 1982, he went to work for Eddie as a herdsman. He was responsible for the show cattle and exhibiting cattle at shows. Lawrence made lots of friends on the show road and enjoyed helping other breeders get ready for sales. Lawrence had his own herd of Shorthorns and one of his well-known cow families was the Ruby’s. Nancy still has females in her herd from this line. Lawrence continued Deer Trail’s annual production sales until 2003. Lawrence passed away in 2005 at the young age of 41 due to injuries sustained in a car accident.

The family that attended the American Royal to receive this award for Eddie, Lawrence, and John Grathwohl is Georgia Loyd, Eddie’s and Lawrence’s sister, Ryan and Nancy Grathwohl Heter, and their children, Josie and Ryder, Rebecca Bacon and her daughter Tayler, and Andy and Robin Grathwohl. Eddie, Lawrence, and John would be very proud that all of Eddie’s children have continued to raise Shorthorns and carryon the genetics that they developed. =

The ideal female will calve and re-breed every year while raising a high performing calf year in and year out.

• The dam is owned by a WHR Breeder.

On a really nice Sunday in October in Iowa The Cedar Valley Shorthorn Sale was presented to a good group of buyers. The consignors dug deep into the heart of their herds to make this a good sale and must be commended. The quality was very deep in each division with the open purebred and pluses as the highlight. It was a snappy auction with a lot of bidding by the crowd, phone bids and the internet. Many of these opens will see the backdrop this year and I wish the new buyers the best of luck. The bred females will head to their new owners and make quite the addition with some reaching donor status. Congrats to all involved.

A capacity crowd filled the seats at the Horseshoe Creek Farms Herd Reduction Sale and an even larger audience followed the sale online. Buyers from six Canadian provinces, five US States as well as England, Ireland and Australia purchased cattle in this sale.

The top selling female was Lot 4, HC Sparkle Delight 20B, at $14,000 to 58

Martyn Moore, Woodstock Bower Farm, Worchestershire, England. This female is a full sister to HC Bluebook 22B, who sold for $32,000 in the 2015 Sun Country sale. She is sired by Waukaru Orion 2047 ET and her dam is HC FL Sparkle Delight 2X ET, a leading donor for Horseshoe Creek.

Selling for $12,000 was Lot 12, was HC Melita Rose 52D and she also sold to Martyn Moore ,Woodstock Bower Farm, from England. This bred heifer is uniquely bred, being sired by the Australian Kamilaroi Meat Packer, and her dam is Waukaru 12H Melita Rose 5021.

The “Quality in Volume” statement in this sale title continues to be one of the most definitive phrases to describe any sale of the fall sale season. Again this year in pen after pen, there were truly outstanding individuals for the large crowd to analyze while making their selections. Normal, where he met his wife of 64 years. He was a sergeant in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

He was a grain and livestock farmer his whole life. He was a Shorthorn Breeder for over 60 years and he and his family exhibited at the county, state and national level. He also was a Yorkshire hog breeder. He was a member of the Knox County Farm Bureau, American Shorthorn Association and Illinois Beef Association. Darrel was a leader for the Wataga Livestock 4-H Club for 20 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Galesburg and was a deacon and trustee. He was a Sparta Township trustee for 18 years. He was also a member of the Oneida American Legion.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Galesburg. Rev. Bob Myers will officiate.

Burial will be in Wataga Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials in Darrel’s name may be made to First Baptist Church, Shorthorn Foundation or the Knox County 4-H and Extension Foundation.

Bernie Leon Vacura, 67, co-owner of Old Czech Country Antiques in Oberlin, died October 23, 2017, at the Uni-

versity of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He was born May 6, 1950, to Anton and Eva Marie (Chance) Vacura.

Mr. Vacura married Othelia (Grossen) Miller on June 21, 1994. He was a farmer and stockman and a lifetime member of the American Shorthorn Association. He was treasurer and a lifelong member of Western Fraternal Lodge Cesti Vlastenci of Oberlin and Jennings.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mick Vacura of Cotopaxi, Colo., and Monty Vacura of Dingmans Ferry, Pa.; a daughter, Marie (Michael) Hargrove of Colorado Springs; a stepson, Keith (Karen) Miller of Mendon, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Amberley Denton of Lyons; his ex-wife, Carol Gethins; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Merlin Vacura; and an infant brother, Randy Vacura.

Farewells Darrel E. Steck, 85, Wataga, died at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg.

He was born November 26, 1931, in Hannah City, to Frank and Fern Weeks Steck. He married Lillabelle “Belle” Mae Lebegue on June 20, 1953, in Highland. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, David (and Sharon) Steck of Galesburg and Dean (and Janice) Steck of Laurel, Nebraska; a son-in-law, Lee (and Stephanie) Steele of Gilson; a sister-in-law, Shirley Steck of Wataga; five grandchildren, Craig (and Stephanie) Steck, Dirk (and Lindsey) Steele, Darla (and Chris) Donovan, Crystal (and Ryan) Dunklau and Michelle (and Scott Montilla) Clague; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Debra Steele; two brothers, Kenneth Steck and Walter Steck; a sister-in-law, Mary Frances Steck; and a grandson, Cole Steele.

Darrel graduated from Galesburg High School in 1951. He attended Illinois State University in Bloomington/ 62

‘Tis the season for candy canes, Christmas carols on the radio, and writing letters to Santa. But as I get older I realize that there is so much more to the holiday season than the presents under the tree. It is a time to be with family and to rejoice in all of the blessings received this past year. My entire life I have been blessed with two families – my immediate

family and my Shorthorn family. There are many breeders who have watched me grow up and learn to love the breed just as they do, and the reason I love the breed is because of the people in it. I have witnessed that when hardship strikes, the first people to rally behind you is your Shorthorn family. So when I received my red jacket this past summer, I

knew that every time I wore it I would do my best to make my Shorthorn family proud.

Although I will not be gathered around the Christmas tree with my Shorthorn family, I know that they are there and that is such a comforting feeling to have. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year! =

1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2018 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2018.)

Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.)
