he 2016 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference is now history and County Fair Season is in full swing across America.

County Fairs are not just for the youth of our breed. The poll taken at Impact 2015 reveals how the show ring plays a role for Shorthorn breeders.

Items B, C and D in the graph show that 66% or 2/3 of the attendees use the show ring to market or promote their operations. The 9% who voted “A”, fall into a category of designing only show cattle. The numbers indicate that 2/3 are breeders designing cattle that have performance data and eye appeal for all segments of the industry.

These animals are being displayed at local and state events. This activity falls into the first Initiative listed at the top of this page “To Develop Better Shorthorn Cattle”.

We need the best cattle and better cattle displayed at these events, both for the breeder and breed acceptance. At these events, each and every cattle person’s impression and perception of our cattle is important. They become an advertisement for Shorthorns.

I just returned from the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Conference held at Kansas State University. First I want to congratulate Dr. Bob Weaber, the KSU Staff and the BIF Board for hosting one of the best BIF Conferences I have attended.

The BIF focuses on improving all beef cattle performance regardless of breed affiliation.

The educational sessions and networking is an awesome advantage to those that attend.

The major buzz word at BIF was Genomics or Genomic EPDS (GE-EPDs). The multibreed Genetic Evaluation we are part of, IGS (International Genetic Solutions) held a pre-conference session with a panel of breed executives, myself included, and producers to introduce to the industry, IGS and the new Bolt System which will tabulate GE-EPDS. It was a standing room only crowd as this presentation was a huge success. BIF is a great event to attend!

Please review the graph concerning the use of EPDs to the left from a poll taken at Impact. If we combine B and C it indicates that 98% of the Shorthorn breeders at Impact use EPDs. This same group said in the poll graph above that 78% show cattle at some level. This indicates the majority of Shorthorn breeders that show also use EPDs in their selection process.

The two polls demonstrate that County Fairs and Shows with BIF and Performance Data play an important role in our breed and industry! =

Always Record Performance the “S.A.M.E.” Contemporary groups are truly the cornerstone of any genetic evaluation.

By definition, a contemporary is nothing more than 2 or more individuals that have had the same opportunity to perform. Unfortunately, as the popularity of EPDs grew, no one took the time to explain the value of contemporary grouping to the vast majority of breeders. The following paragraphs outline a few cardinal rules to follow when establishing contemporary groups while recording performance data. Your decisions can impact the potential value and EPDs of every animal in your herd.

If you can remember the acronym “S.A.M.E.,” you have very little to worry about. Sex, Age, Management, & Environment are the four main considerations in forming a performance report. Sex – This one is obvious, but bull calves do not compare against heifers. The registry system will split these groups automatically, but you can do it as well entering data. Age – Usually, the decision here is whether to include those “stragglers” in a group, or leave them behind in their own group in favor of a larger more powerful contemporary group. For example, if you have 2 bull calves in late May and 30 bull calves from February through April, don’t include the Aprils with the 2 stragglers. Management – This rarely enters in, but if ignored can cause considerable error. Creep feed is a form of management; if one pasture gets it and the other does not, the groups should be split at weaning. However, if feeding your bred heifers more energy (as you should be), their calves DO NOT need to be split from the mature cows. Once they go to grass, it should all equal out. Environment – Similar to management, but refers more to location. Example: If you have a fescue pasture that some pairs endure and a forage field of ryegrass and turnips, those groups should be split for weaning weights.

Here are some other rules to consider: Rule #1: It Takes Two. The basis of genetic evaluation is a comparison of animals given the same environmental opportunities. No

matter how proud you may be of your top animal, his/her performance information has no value by itself and no impact on the EPDs of the elite animal, his/her sire or dam, relatives, etc. Individual animals need at least one other pen mate with which to compare.

There are some additional breed, sex, and age requirements to follow in order to make the animals true contemporaries. As the number of animals in a contemporary group goes up, the power of the information increases. In turn, EPDs will change at a faster rate and EPD accuracies will increase, moving cattle closer to their “true” genetic estimate.

Rule #2: Contemporary Groups Never Get Larger.

As cattle age, breeders make decisions that determine the fate of each calf in the herd. In many cases, the decision is performance based, keeping the faster growing genetics back in the herd.

Contemporary groups are established at birth on the original farm or ranch where the calf was born. Purchased weanling or yearling cattle obviously come from different operations, so they can never be contemporaries of your own home-raised progeny. Even if the animals are fed in the same pen since weaning, their environmental opportunities (and their mother’s) were different prior to that, potentially affecting performance traits. In the complex matrix of performance records, herd of origin is the first limiting step in determining contemporary groups.

As a result, any weaning and yearling data collected can dramatically influence the EPD profile of sires and dams. On the other hand, purchased bred heifers/cows should have their progeny recorded with the rest of the herd.

Rule #3: The Bad Ones Make The Good Ones Better.

This statement seems like an oxymoron of sorts, but the disadvantages of selective reporting cannot be made any clearer. Many breeds are migrating to a performance system that mirrors the ASA Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) system, only participation is required. This system encourages breeders to submit ALL

records for their calf crop, creating a data set that is a much truer reflection of the herd’s genetic value. Reporting only calves that remain in the herd skews data and actually hurts the resulting EPDs of the most elite progeny. For example, in order to maximize the benefit of EPDs, weaning weights should be reported on all live calves prior to making culling decisions.

The resulting ratios of the heaviest calves go up, and in turn, Weaning Weight EPD. Rule #4: Make Fair Comparisons.

The basic numbers that establish an animal’s performance profile are only as good as the person submitting the information. However, in some cases, breeders are unknowingly misleading themselves. Proper contemporary grouping and data submittal ensures more accurate EPDs and increases the chances for happy, repeat customers. At birth, it’s important to compare calves born in similar environments. January babies should not be compared to May calves born in much warmer conditions as climate and temperature affects birth weight. The registry system will count 90 days from your first calf and split the contemporary group after that birth date if you do not. If bulls or heifers are pulled away from contemporaries to be prepared for sale or exhibition, they should immediately be put in their own 1 head contemporary group from that day forward. In the case of females, reporting a hefty weaning weight from a show heifer against others being fed less could devastate her Milk EPD as a mature cow. Her data suggests she should wean the heaviest calf, but her genetic ability does not allow that to happen. Other treatments like creep feeding will also impact performance and should separate contemporaries.

What Can I Do? The following example explains how to maximize contemporary groups in a small herd without sacrificing data integrity.

The following calf crop of 23 head has been properly split into 4 contemporary groups based on sex and date of birth. (Reader’s Note: All male calves should be reported as bulls, even if castrated at birth to avoid an unnecessary contemporary group break.

Change bull calves to steers at weaning, regardless of castration date.) If these records had been submitted differently,

the resulting groups may be different by ASA system default. For example, if submitted one at a time, the June heifer may have been separated to her own group, and no performance records would result in EPD changes. If all submitted together, the system would count 90 days from the oldest animal and separate the group between animals #517 and #523, even though they were

born one month apart. In the case of bulls, animal #522 would have been sorted by itself, again eliminating any EPD accuracy change. When calving intervals exceed 90 days, animals should be split in at least two groups to avoid the above cases. Consult an ASA representative if you need help establishing contemporary groups at any reporting stage. =

=News & Notes Farewell Vada R. Hahn, 94, of Toluca, Illinois, passed away at 10:41 p.m.

Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at Heritage Health in Minonk, Illinois.

Vada was born January 18, 1922 in Rock Port, Mo., the daughter of Claude and Bertha Moore Gubser. She married Robert H. Hahn Sr. on August 26, 1945 in Hamburg, Iowa. He died June 15, 2009.

Surviving are two sons Robert (Barbara) Hahn Jr. of Morrison, Ill., and Richard (Pam) Hahn of Minonk; six grandsons Jeremy (Lindsay), Justin,

Casey, Aaron (Jennifer), Cory (Sarah) and Matthew Hahn; one granddaughter Sara (Cody) Miles; and five great grandchildren Braden, Madison, and Bennett Hahn, and Grace and Noah Miles.; and one brother Raymond Gubser in Virginia, Neb. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Leroy and Robert, one sister Verna Joesting and a great granddaughter Lauren Elizabeth Hahn.

Vada was a member of St. John’s

Lutheran Church in Toluca where she was a member of the Ladies Church Circle and of the Home Extension Club. She was an avid quilter for the church and for her family. She had also taught Sunday School at Trinity Lutheran in LaRose. Vada taught school for 53 years in Toluca, Henry, and LaRose and also substituted for a number of years. In July 2007, Gwen Crawford began working for the American Shorthorn Association as the director of registrations. Eventually she took her place a director of youth activities. She said she always wanted to work with youth and it was her goal to get to that position.

“There is a word that comes to mind whenever I think of Gwen,” Shay Bakenhus said. “Tenacity. From the time I met her 23 years ago, there was always a spark. My children have definitely been the recipients of a few pep talks. She always encouraged them to be active and better.”

Originally from Roca, Nebraska, Crawford now currently resides in Kathryn, North Dakota. She grew up showing Shorthorns and she was even

on the Junior Board in the 90s. Her involvement as a junior helped grow her passion to be the director of youth activities and give back to the breed that she loves.

“As I say good-bye to the American Junior Shorthorn Association, I hope that the junior participation continues to grow stronger,” Crawford said. “Not only in showing but contest involvement and other activities like the KEY Conference.”

Crawford said her favorite part of her job is getting to work with the junior members, junior board and event planning.

“I will really miss working with the youth,” Crawford said. “Being in my position has made many of them like family and even though I won’t be there

anymore, I know that they will always be a big part of my life. Even though the National Junior Shorthorn Show takes a lot of work I will miss getting to plan such a large event.”

Crawford has seen many changes over the years. She said even though change is sometimes hard, the changes have helped the ASA get to where it is today. There was the big change of moving office locations to a whole new state but the ASA continues to grow.

“Gwen is a hard-working individual that has a passion for helping the youth,” said Montie D. Soules, Executive Secretary/CEO for ASA. “In the years that I have been here I have seen how much she loved her job.

National Junior Shorthorn Show

Shorthorns took St. Paul by storm last month for the 2016 Shorthorn Junior Nationals, and when I say took it by storm, I mean there was an actual storm! Although gale force winds tried to blow the hoop building down during the Sullivan Supply Fitting contest.

Even with the the challenges we faced the Shorthorn juniors shown through, the event fittingly being themed

Shorthorns in the spot! Events were kicked off on opening ceremonies night. From the first contest to the last Shorthorn juniors gave it their all and tried their hardest to be the one in the spotlight when the contest results were announced at the banquet. There was even a guest appearance from Brad and Carrie at the banquet. As the week drew to a close the hardest part was

letting one of our own go. Thanks again Gwen for all you have done for the juniors. However even as we are all packed up to go home we are already shining our spotlights toward Tulsa for the 2017 Junior Nationals, where once again we will pick up friendships right where they were left at St. Paul and strive to make new ones. =

Beef Cook-Off Winners

Bad jokes, creative prompts for their skits, and great food. The beef-cook off competition combines all three of those things as well as many more. This contest is a great way for juniors to show off their acting and public speaking skills as well as being creative with their skits. It is also a great way for contestants to showcase their culinary skills. After their skit these contestants were quizzed on their knowledge by the judges both on the product they made

as well as the retail cuts and the beef industry as a whole.

Indiana won the Showmanship award while the award for best recipe went to Kansas.

Winning Recipe Recipe by Kansas

Ingredients 1 Sirloin Steak 1 Sprig Fresh Rosemary 1 Tbs Crushed Garlic 2 Tbs Butter Salt and Pepper to taste

Heat skillet to hot. Salt and pepper both sides of steak.

Place steak into hot skillet and leave it alone for 3 minutes.

Turn steak over and let it sit for another 3 minutes. Add butter and let melt. Place rosemary sprig on top of steak.

Add garlic to butter. Tilt pan slightly and continuously spoon garlic butter on top of rosemary and steak. Check for desired doneness. Place onto plate and let sit for a few minutes before cutting into it to let the natural juices relax.=

Lassie’s Princess Hour

decorating their cookies we then served them lemonade in their teacups. The girls enjoyed their cookies and lemonade while getting to know each other. When it was time for them to leave we made the announcement that they would get to keep their cups. I heard many comments like "cool", "no way", and "awesome". After the day was over I had many parents come up to me and say that they thought it was so cool that we had given them teacups.

I even had one parent say they had round two tea party at their stall. I remember when I was little going to my first Lassie Princess Hour and how I looked up to the queens. I hope that this is the start of a tradition that will be carried on for years. =

With over 300 people and 600 head of cattle, it can also become a mess if not taken care of. In the herdsmanship contest states must work together within their association to make sure every member is a part of keeping their stalls, tack area and alley ways clean and

presentable. Each state is judged on organization of tack, stall card quality, upkeep of stalls and bedding, cooperation and teamwork, and the care and appearance of cattle. Because there is no set judging times, this contest helps exhibitors to always be prepared and know that someone can be watching at any moment.

Junior Nationals is the highlight of many junior members summer.

However, the first few years can be intimidating for the younger members.

The Mentor/ Apprentice program, sponsored by Eric and Carrie Behlke allows for a senior or intermediate to mentor a prospector throughout the week. There are several fun activities that the Mentor and the Apprentice participated in throughout the week.

Activities included getting to know their partner, practicing judging skills and

selling Frisbees for a throwing contest to help fund next year’s Junior Nationals.

This year’s juniors who sold the most Frisbees, raising money for the American Junior Shorthorn Association were Kelsey Wolfe and Addison Obrecht.

At the end of the week, juniors that completed all of the tasks were placed into the Golden Hopper to be in a drawing to receive the coveted Golden Comb award. This year’s recipients of the Golden Comb Award were Emma Bird and Ryan Wickard. =

Photography Winners Digitally Enhanced Winners The juniors this year sure came through with great skill and quality in the Photography Contest. With so many photos captured and entered in the contest from cattle in the heartland to wide ranges covered in snow to the show calves in the barn, the judges all agreed it was hard to pick the top five in each age division. All the juniors that entered did a magnificent job capturing and highlighting the breed through a camera.

The intermediates and seniors were also able to take it to the computers and enhance their photos for the Digitally Enhanced contest. These

individuals were allowed to alter their photo by changing the hues, brightness, as well as the possibility of combining multiple photos. Just like the photography contest, each junior entered captured the moment amazingly through their cameras.

Promotion of one’s own animals results with either obtaining a prospective buyer’s attention or losing a sale. These youths have excelled at promoting the Shorthorn breed through posters or the graphic design contests. They have excelled in finding catchy slogans, visually appealing designs and putting it together in a striking package. The prospectors were challenged to create a poster and were given instructions on what the poster should promote. Prospectors I supported the breed and Prospector II promoted involvement in contests at

Junior National. The Intermediates and Seniors were given the task to create a graphic design. The intermediates charged with the task to promote the American Junior Shorthorn Association, while the Senior were to promote Advertising in the Shorthorn Country. The participants applied their creative abilities to make something that successfully promoted their respective category. These youths have a bright future ahead of them in the Shorthorn Industry. Once again AJSA partnered with Teter’s Sock Drawer as part of a community service project. Each state in attendance were challenged to collect as many pairs of new socks as possible.

States were ranked based on the number of socks brought per exhibitor entered for the respective state.

American Shorthorn Foundation Scholarship Recipients

On Wednesday, July 7, junior exhibitors gathered around on lawn chairs in the Coliseum at the right front row: Ashley Nye; Desirae Logsdon; Macy Minnesota State Fairgrounds to receive Bakenhus; back row: Mark recognition for their hard work in the Gordon, Tate Lueth; Collin barn but also to be recognized for their Vander Wal; and Cody academic excellence and involvement.

With the support of the American Shorthorn Foundation and the generous families who are listed below, juniors walked away with money for school. All of those represented though the scholarships are known as “Builders of the Breed,” An honor granted to members of the Shorthorn breed. Every year a selection committee carefully combs each application and makes nail biting decisions to select the best recipients.

Jared and Justin Bedwell Memorial Scholarship: The $1,000 Jared & Justin Bedwell Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the Bedwell Family of Isabella, Okla., in cooperation with The Shorthorn Foundation and was awarded to a high school senior, college freshman or college sophomore based upon the applicants' involvement, future goals and career plans in Agriculture, college GPA, and character references. The scholarship was established by the family to honor the brothers, who were both active AJSA members. This year the recipient was John Reasor.

Reasor is the 21-year-old son of Steve and Melissa Reasor of Wildwood, Georgia. He currently attends the Oklahoma State University majoring in animal science and minoring in business. Reasor plans to continue on to law school to learn the legislation process to help give cattlemen a larger voice.

“With a constant need for a positive voice for the beef industry, and agriculture as a whole” Reasor said, “My career goals try to stay focused on helping the image of what I love to do.”

Lyle and Katharyn DeWitt Memorial Scholarship: The one $1,000 Lyle and Katharyn DeWitt Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Lyle and Katharyn DeWitt and their contributions to the Shorthorn breed.

This scholarship is sponsored by The Shorthorn Foundation and awarded to high school seniors or college freshmen based upon Shorthorn involvement, grades, need, and participation in other activities. This year the recipient was Macy Bakenhus.

Bakenhus is the 18-year-old daughter of Ward and Shay Bakenhus. She plans to pursue a degree in agricultural education starting at Central Community College in Columbus, Nebraska then completing her degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Bakenhus has been involved with Shorthorn cattle her whole life and has showed and participated in contest at Junior Nationals since she was sixyears-old.

“My greatest honor was to be chosen to serve as the 2016 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen,” Bakenhus said. “Since the crowning I have attended the National western Stock Show, the Fort Worth Stock Show, the Nebraska Cattleman’s Classic, and numerous sales and events representing the National Shorthorn Association and the National Lassie Association.”

Jessie M and Jennie S. Duckett Memorial Scholarship: The one $1,000 Jesse M. & Jennie S. Duckett Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by The Shorthorn Foundation and awarded to high school seniors or college freshmen based upon the applicants’ involvement in Agriculture, educational background, ACT scores, and high school and/or college GPA. This year’s recipient was Ashley Nye. Nye is the 18-year-old daughter of Chuck and Tammy Nye of New Prague, Minnesota. She attends South Dakota State University majoring in agricultural business and minoring in agricultural marketing. Nye was involved in 4-H and FFA, along with being a member of the Minnesota Junior Shorthorn Association since 2011.

“I want to be involved in educating youth and consumers about the industry to decrease the misunderstandings and the valid assumptions,” Nye said. “I believe young people are a huge aspect and major factor of our industry, and

without their involvement our industry would struggle.”

Mike Dugdale Memorial Scholarship: In 2006 the Shorthorn breed lost one of its long-time members, Michael Dugdale. Dugdale was involved in the first importation of Irish Shorthorns in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He served in the Nebraska and Iowa Shorthorn Association holding positions in each.

In the early 80’s he was elected to the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors. In his history of being a manager, herd consultant and order buyer, Dugdale attended hundreds of Shorthorn sales though out North America and Canada while purchasing untold numbers of Shorthorn cattle.

The $1,000 Dugdale Scholarship was awarded to a collegiate upperclassman who is an active AJSA member with a sincere interest in bettering the beef cattle industry after college. This year’s recipient was Tyler Pierson.

Pierson, of Watertown, Minnesota, is the son of Thomas and Sherri Pierson.

He currently attends South Dakota State University double majoring in animal science and agricultural science, and minoring in agricultural business.

Pierson has been a member of AJSA since 2006 and was also active in 4-H and FFA. “I look forward to expanding my cow herd as a member of the American Shorthorn Association,” Pierson said.

“While being gainfully employed off of the farm in either the nutrition, genetics, or product management field.”

Charles B. “Chuck” Leemon Memorial Scholarship: The one $2,500 Charles B. “Chuck” Leemon Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the family of Chuck Leemon in cooperation with The Shorthorn Foundation and awarded to a college student based upon the applicants’ involvement, future goals and career plans in Agriculture, college GPA, and character references. The recipient for this year’s scholarship was Haley Alden.

Alden is the 21-year-old daughter of Ron and Judy Alden of Hamilton, Missouri. She currently attends the University of Missouri majoring in agribusiness management and minoring in agricultural leadership. Alden has attended 20 National Junior Shorthorn Shows since her first attendance at the age of three-months-old. She has also been active in 4-H, FFA and the Missouri Shorthorn Association.

“It truly is my passion to be able to help youth develop their skills in the livestock industry,” Alden said. “I plan to continue to raise Purebred Shorthorn cattle and stay involved in the Shorthorn industry for the rest of my life.”

Don Longley Memorial Scholarship: Don Longley was a past publisher of the Shorthorn World magazine. He followed his father’s footsteps and continued the empire of the Shorthorn magazine, insisting his staff attend every Shorthorn show, sale and conference possible in order to bring Shorthorn breeders the most accurate and expansive information of the time.

He worked effortlessly to promote the breed, and his greatest delight was to publish a journalistically superior book.

The Shorthorn World was never the same after the Longley era, with more than 50 years of father and son work towards the magazine and breed.

Each year four $1,000 Longley Memorial Scholarships are awarded.

The scholarships are sponsored by The Shorthorn Foundation and awarded to high school seniors or college freshmen based upon Shorthorn involvement, grades, need, and participation in other activities. Four recipients were selected for this year’s scholarship, Cody Pearson, Collin Vander Wal, Desirae Logsdon and Tate Lueth.

Pearson is the 18-year-old son of Brad and Bev Pearson. He plans to attend South Dakota State University majoring in natural resources law enforcement and minoring in wildlife and fisheries/ Vander Wal is the 18-year-old son of Kevin and Kari Vander Wal. He plans to attend South Dakota State University majoring in animal science with a minor in agricultural science.

Logsdon is the 18-year-old daughter of Barry and Renae Logsdon. She will be attending Wilmington College double majoring in ag business and animal science Lueth is the 18-year-old son of Jeffrey and Dana Lueth. He plans to attend the University of NebraskaLincoln majoring in pre-veterinary medicine with a minor in animal science reproduction.

John Miller Scholarship: The one $2,500 John Miller Scholarship is awarded to collegiate upperclassman (including trade schools) who is an active AJSA member with an emphasis to be placed on

recipient having some interest in making Shorthorns more viable in the commercial cattle industry. The recipient selected this year to receive the John Miller Scholarship was, Jennifer Bedwell.

Bedwell is the 20-year-old daughter of Jeff and Diane Bedwell of Isabella, Oklahoma. She attends Oklahoma State University double majoring in agricultural communications and animal science, and minoring in agricultural economics.

“Agriculture is something that I have always had a passion for,” Bedwell said.

“Whether it’s been on the end of a show halter, or in the cab of a tractor, some of my fondest memories encompass agriculture.”

John C. “Jack” Ragsdale Scholarship: The $1,000 Jack Ragsdale Scholarship is awarded to a high school senior or college freshman who is an active AJSA member with a sincere interest in learning how to evaluate livestock and an appreciation for the purebred livestock industry.

The recipient of this award exemplifies the qualities of Ragsdale, who is also known as “Mr. Shorthorn” by many breeders. Hailing originally from Indiana, he has been active in the Shorthorn business his entire life.

Ragsdale was the High Point Individual at the International Livestock Judging Contest in Chicago in 1948, and had the record high score until 1961.

Ragsdale was on the Purdue University Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team.

After judging, Ragsdale began his servitude at the American Shorthorn Association in 1965, where he began a 12-year term on the Board of Directors, eventually being named president.

Ragsdale was instrumental in the inception of the North American International Livestock Exposition, and also implemented the first Shorthorn Youth Conference in 1968, which was the start to the American Junior Shorthorn Association. Ragsdale’s portrait is hung in the Purdue University Livestock Hall of Fame in Indiana, and also has been inducted into the Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Club. This year’s recipient is Lane Williams.

Williams is the 18-year-old son of Kenneth Williams of Duncan, Oklahoma. His college choices are Oklahoma State University and Redlands Community College, and an anticipated major of animal science with a minor in ag business. =

One of the most difficult competitions of the week is the Showmanship contest. Showmanship is the jack of all trades competition.

Members are judged on their ability to prepare and present their animal while showcasing a depth of knowledge of the beef industry and the Shorthorn breed.

The work towards this competition began long before exhibitors arrived in St. Paul. This year’s judges were Father/Son duo Ed Schmidt and Kelly Schmidt of Minnesota (Senior/Prospector II) and Husband/Wife duo Ryan and Crystal Dunklau of Nebraska (Intermediate/Prospector I). This year’s team sales competition once again proved how much talent the kids have in the Shorthorn breed.

Smooth talking individuals teamed up to try and sell an animal, a Zoetis product, or to come up with a solution for a given scenario. Prospector divisions were to sell an animal of their choice. They were expected to bring an animal to the judges and give a 4-6 minute presentation on why the judge should be interested in buying it.

Intermediate contestents were to sell

any Zoetis product of their choosing to the judges. Senior contestants were given a real-life scenario in which a producer was looking to add some Shorthorn genetics into their operation.

Contestants had to come up with a plan and present a solution to the judges. Many different methods of selling were used in this event, some were serious, some were funny, but all were one of a kind! Placings in the team sales contest:

This year the exhibitor that the Junior Board selected stood out by having to be talked into going into the showmanship ring to overcoming his fright and walking out of the ring as an enthusiastic participant and fist bumping the judges. The Outstanding Junior Board Member Scholarship was created to honor a Junior Board Member who has gone above and beyond in their service to the American Junior Shorthorn Association during their time in office. This recipient has been selected to receive this $500 scholarship by the members themselves in acknowledgement of their hard work and determination. This year’s recipient was Haley Alden of Hamilton, Missouri. Alden is the 21 year-old daughter of Ron and Judy Alden. She passed on her red coat at this year’s Junior Nationals, ending her term on the board as President. =

After the first few days of contest it was hard to guess which state might come out on top as the Outstanding State Junior Association. In the end a few states gave each other a run for their money with Indiana being the top state once again. With 26 exhibitors competing in contest and show, it’s hard to beat the dedication of Indiana’s junior members. =

From Our View... At the Junior National Very often there are people at a function who do not receive enough recognition and thanks. Here are three who we feel need a little extra in the thank you department.

THE MINNESOTA VOLUNTEER GROUP This group of people--including the

Minnesota Association Board of Directors--was amazing all week. We were told it started when exhibitors arrived. They were greeted upon arrival, shown where they were stalled and even helped during unloading. It just kept going. They were everywhere, always asking if you needed anything or if they could help. They did a wonderful job and are to be commended. Thanks to all these Minnesota Volunteers!

STEPHANIE STECK Again this year, Stephanie designed the logo for the event as she has done for the past many years. She always does this at no charge to the Juniors and always designs something

wonderful. Stephanie does not receive enough recognition for her efforts.

Thank You! How do you put into words what over 9 years of something they had the passion and LOVED to do has meant to someone?

It all started in July of 2007. I came in to be the Director of registrations. I have the background to get an office up and running when people have left or companies have been having issues and I love to make efficiencies. Most importantly though, I loved working with youth. Not many people would use a week of their vacation to volunteer for Cornhusker Girls State where you spend a week with over 400 girls just after their junior year of High School but I lived for it every year. When I was hired I already knew about Junior Nationals, the other shows and their leadership conference but the timing for all of that would come later. God has a plan and it is amazing how you are NOT in control and he makes sure you know this.

I have been blessed with getting to work with some of the best interns in the country.

Trying to find housing was an issue when I first got to ASA so after Mackenzie Kastl had the interesting experience living downtown, I decided to open up the spare bedrooms for future interns. I could not be happier that I did! Most people would think that living and working together would get hard. Good thing is I’m a busy person and I was barely home so that wasn’t going to be a problem. Well turns out it was even more fun to invite the interns along to the things I was going to so they could meet people, experience new things and just really get the experience of Omaha. One of the things I pride myself on whether it be for interns, junior board, or basically anyone that comes in to our circle is helping people experience things for the first time. I have tried to do this every year for the interns. I have taken them to things from their first professional baseball game, College World Series games, places to eat, to ice skating in July. It literally gives me such a blessed feeling when I can do this for ANYONE. The hard work leading up to Junior Nationals is always a ton of work and can be very stressful and when they see their hard work come to fruition this is the other most satisfying thing for me to be a part of with them. From Hilary Hawkins and Jennie Johnson, my first official interns who had to take the most of the learning curve with me, to Blaire and Laura where we made so many efficiencies that Jennie was jealous of how we weren’t in the office at 10:00 every night to Rachel Linder and Jordan Albiani, Will Moore (Mo) and Victoria Osburn (Tex) and even thought she wasn’t technically ASJA’s intern we would never leave out Rachel Metzger, to finally this year Abbey Martin and Taylor Wilkins I can honestly say I could not have gotten through one single Junior Nationals without you. I know how they all loved pulling the papers off of the door/walls when they completed something and couldn’t wait for them to become empty. What they don’t know is just how proud I am of each of them. I have had the most awesome opportunity where I have stayed in touch with each of them. I have watched where each of them has ended up after the internship and after they

graduated. Someday I would love to do a piece on them “Where are they Now” they have each gone on to be some pretty successful young women and men and I still get a chill when they text or FB message me to tell me their next step and keep me in the loop of what is going on in their lives. It means a lot!

I literally have tears in my eyes preparing to write this next piece. I would put our junior board against any other breed ANY DAY and I would win. People talk about worrying about our future with this new generation, well those people better make sure to hire or work with one of these men or women that have been on our board because let me tell you they would change their tune and start talking about how the future is bright with people like these.

It wasn’t in the cards for me to have kids of my very own. Luckily however, these past several years I was given the chance to have nine kids each year that are just like one of my own. I want to thank all of the parents who trusted me to look out for their children. Just like in life as one gets older, it’s amazing what I find out after the fact! I hope they knew how special they were/are to me and how much I worried about them just like a parent and even still I try to keep tabs on them.

In St. Paul I was given the most heartfelt tribute from the present and past junior board members. I still get choked up thinking about it. The words that were said were so humbling and to have so many past board members actually there or texting me they wished they could have been there is the best gift of all. I love them all so much and the inside jokes, stories, and the thousands of wonderful memories will not be forgotten. I have written each of them a note so I’ll keep this part brief. But I want ALL of the juniors to know how much they have meant to me whether they were on the board or not. I enjoyed getting to know them so much and I will be keeping tabs on all of you too!

Junior Nationals has been one for the books! My first official year I became the Director of Junior Activities, where we broke all sorts of records including the record high for temperature in Grand Island to all of the years in between. We went from states hosting the event to ASA being responsible financially for the event. Even though ASA may be responsible for the finances and Junior National as a whole, there is no way an event can go on without all of the support of all of you.

Sponsorships, donations, volunteers in a hundred different ways. Minnesota, I want to thank you for letting me leave on such a high. You all were so great and I couldn’t be happier that we finally got a Junior National up there. You guys proved that it definitely should come back down the road.

I want to thank my dad, Greg Crawford for not only thinking of me when it came to the job opening years ago, but also for breaking away from your family tradition and having Bev and I show Shorthorns and bringing us to our first Junior Nationals in 1988 in Omaha, NE. That led to the love of the breed and helped me set my sights on being a lassie and being on the Jr. Board and now look where it’s taken me! LOVE YOU! Jodene, thank you for being the newest addition to our family just 4 short years ago. It is so neat to see dad having someone to share all of this with. I know he loves it and it certainly can be hard, but you are so appreciated for going along and doing this with him and the grandkids who are now aging out of the juniors themselves.

Dennis and Rita Jungels, thank you for always helping get me wherever I needed to, whether it was a ride to the airport so the car didn’t have to sit for a week while I was at an event, or actually going to an event with me just to say hi to breeders and see what it was all about, to helping hold down the fort when Derek was up to his eyeballs in calving, breeding, haying, and everything in between with the bank. Most people think “Oh he’s a banker he has a hired man to do the work.” Yes, Joe is a great asset to the team, but I have never met anyone next to my dad who works as hard as Derek does. You guys raised him with such an amazing work ethic and willingness to help I want to thank you for that.

Last but definitely not least, I want to thank Derek. He’s been right by my side knowing how hard it is to leave something I love. He knows how much it all meant to me. I think sometimes he got just as much of a kick out of the junior board as I did when he was in contact with them. Thanks to Derek I am blessed to have his son Brock in my life who I hope one day will want to be a part of Junior Nationals as well. =

Judges Announced for 2016 Northeast Region Keystone International Livestock Exposition HARRISBURG -- Shorthorn exhibitors are encouraged to travel to beautiful Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for the 60th Annual Keystone International Livestock Exposition (KILE). Held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, this year KILE runs Sept. 30 - Oct. 9, 2016.

Tyler Melroe of Britton, SD, will judge the Northeast Region National Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus show at KILE. Tyler and his family operate

Melroe Farms, a diversified grain and cattle operation located in southeast North Dakota. He has served as President of the SD Beef Breed Council. Tyler has judged shows at the national level.

Shawn Varner from Kearney, Mo., will judge the KILE junior Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus show. Shawn works for Syngenta as a Seed Advisor Manager and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University, where he was on the livestock judging team. Shawn
