Non-Certificate Bulls To make a bull non-certificate, ALL DNA requirements for an A.I. sire must be completed before we will make them non-certificate.

A.I. Certificate Bulls As of January 1, 2017, any bull releasing its first A.I certificate, will not be able to until ALL DNA is completed.

Transferring Bred Females Bred females being transferred must have all the breeding information including name and registration number of sires, type of service, date of service and/or pasture exposure dates to and from, at the time the bred female is transferred to a new owner.

WHR Breeders 1. WHR Breeders cannot register any calves until their cow herd inventory assessment is completed and paid in full for that calendar year.

2. To take advantage of the free registration benefit of being a WHR Breeder, you must register your natural calf before it turns one (1) year of age.

Attention Juniors - New Rules!

Contemporary Groups

• Juniors running for the AJSA Junior Board must be at least 17 and no older than 20 as of January 1, 2017. Junior Board members will be allowed to finish out their term even if they age out of showing. The AJSA junior board application can be found at juniorshorthorn.com. Junior Board candidates are required to attend Youth Conference I, II and III as well as a junior board interview. Email shelby@shorthorn.org for any questions about running for the junior board.

• Junior members turning 22 in 2017, your Junior membership is good through Dec. 31, 2017. At that time you will need to become an adult member by January 1, 2018 to maintain membership in ASA. You are still eligible to show at the Junior National in 2017 if you turn 22 anytime during the 2017 year.

• New age requirement for Junior Nationals! Starting January 1, 2017 the age to show at the Junior National has been lowered to 7. The junior member has to be 7 on January 1 of the year the Junior National is taking place to be eligible to show at the Junior National. For example, if a child was born on 12/15/2009 they will be eligible to show at the 2017 Junior Nationals in Tulsa because they were 7 on January1, 2017.

If you enter your calf crop into the registry in several different sessions, you must indicate which contemporary group each calf belongs to. To do this, use management codes (the “Mgmt” box) and the “Season” drop down menu when submitting calves to the registry. All calves in a contemporary group must have the same management code and same season submitted in order to be properly grouped together. If these are not used, the registry will group calves by the day they are submitted.

Miscellaneous Information • Effective March 1, 2016, DNA sent to the office without complete paperwork will incur an additional charge.

• Effective January 1, 2015, EPD’s will only be available to Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) breeders of the American Shorthorn Association. As a reminder, regardless of membership status of owner, an animal registered by a WHR breeder will have access to EPDs for the lifetime of that animal.

• All A.I. Sires and Donor Dams are required to have all genetic conditions tested (TH, PHA, DS) and DNA genotype (SeekSire) completed before registration of progeny.

t is springtime across the country and new beginnings accompany the new season.

This time of the year leads to hustle and bustle for all. At the association, the staff is busy preparing for the next ten months’ activities. Fairs and exhibitions need information for Shorthorn classifications and judges must be announced for all the regional and national shows (the 2017-2018 show schedule on page 35). Staff and board members are reaching out to state associations for officer contacts for each state organization. We are striving for better communication links between the state groups and ASA. New technologies and activities continue to be developed and studied by staff and your ASA Board. Our goal is to always be prepared to answer questions and educate membership. The biggest activity of our year, the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference in Tulsa, OK this July is getting its final touches. Plans for the Junior National begin immediately after the previous year’s event. There is an exciting facelift planned for the show this year - with the help of the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association. I believe this experience will be talked about for quite some time. It is being designed and planned to be bigger, better and more sensational than ever before!

Junior members and families, please remember the entry and ownership deadline is May 1, with a late entry date of May 15. All entries will be online through the website on the junior page and all rules and regulations are online in the Edge Newsletter - please check for more information on Page 20 in this issue. This year’s Junior National and Youth Conference will be worth the time and cost. This is our biggest Shorthorn event it is going to be spectacular!

Additional important ASA activity this time of the year includes helping members with finalizing WHR assessments; if you do not already have yours done, please get started.

WHR Breeders must have their assessments for 2017 completed before registering a calf born in 2017. I encourage you to register your entire calf crop early. This is a huge benefit for you as a breeder in saving additional fees for registering animals over 12 months of age. There is no additional cost to register the entire calf crop each year if you are a WHR Breeder. One number, Total Registrations for the breed, is an important reflection on the position of Shorthorns in the industry. We can improve our image from a small breed registry to a mid-breed registry if everyone registered all their calves. On this same topic, remember to submit data - CED, BW and WW - for sure on the resulting calf from each cow assessed. This will add tremendous strength to the performance data and EPD system in our breed. It will also reveal which animals in your operation are the top producers and which ones may need to be culled. In order for EPDs to relate the most useful information, we must record a complete picture of our herds – from the very best right down to the very worst.

At ASA just like at your house, preparations are being made for the next season of activities and events. I challenge you to do the same with your cattle operation. Register those calves at a young age! Be prepared with the paper and information for entering shows or sales this summer and fall. It is easy to put off this activity; I can tell you from my own experience managing a registered operation with over 300 calves born per year. When I rearranged our priorities and made the commitment to have all calves registered by the time they were 45-60 days old, many of my frustrations and problems disappeared. I had the information when I needed it, whether it was for a sale, customer inquiry, show entry or if I needed performance information. I registered every calf born for that reason and there was not an assessment program that included the registration and transfer. It was costly, but really saved money in the long run.

Spring is a refreshing time of new beginnings from all of nature. It has a special way of energizing us and motivating us to accomplish tasks that we know will be beneficial to us later. So, please get those Junior National Entries in early. Make sure transfers and/or registrations are done before deadline dates and register everything in a timely manner this year. Be prepared for summer shows, fall sales and even next year’s Junior National! See you in Tulsa! =

New ASA Policies 1

Any Junior whose membership expires on December 31 of the year they turn 22 is eligible to become a Senior ASA member at a cost of $50 for the first year if the application printed on the back of the letter notifying them of the expiration is completed and returned, with payment in full, to the office by March 1 of the year which follows the expiration.

As of July 1, 2017, all DNA has to be processed by ASA’s designated lab (GeneSeek). Only tests results completed by ASA’s designated lab (GeneSeek) will be uploaded to the Digital Beef registry. All DNA must be sent directly to the ASA office in Kansas City.

Motion was made and seconded to register ET steers for $20 unless the registration was covered with WHR assessment. Motion failed – 2 in favor, 6 opposed.

President Mark Gordon called the meeting to order Dec. 2, 2016 at 8:00am.

A committee was appointed to review a fee schedule for ET registrations.

A motion was made to include the new Stayability EPD, being formulated by IGS through the Bolt system, as a standard trait for Shorthorn EPDs. Motion passed unanimously.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were reviewed and discussed.

The board approved to accept and determine the requirements for the Builder of the Breed as agreed upon with Shorthorn Country. The motion passed unanimously; a Board committee will be appointed to present the Builder of the Breed requirements at the next board meeting.

December 2, 2016

The Minutes for the Sept. 28-29, 2016 Board Meeting were unanimously approved.

Rochelle Wilson and Montie Soules presented financial reports for November 2016; due to the date of the meeting, the November reports were not complete. Finalized financials will be provided to the Board by Dec. 10.

The Board unanimously approved the final version of the ASA Audit for the fiscal year (Sept. 1, 2015-Aug. 31, 2016) as prepared by Tom Schwaller, CPA. Jim Freed reported on the committee from Oklahoma working with ASA staff on 2017 Junior National in Tulsa.

The Board went into executive session.

After lunch Bryce Schumann reviewed the Board objectives, responsibilities and governance set earlier in the year.

Steven Crow, ASA attorney offered information regarding disclosers and legal responsibilities of the Board and the Executive to the membership.

Meeting adjourned at 4:45pm.

Exhibitors must be a paid member of the AJSA and must be 7 years old as of Jan. 1 and not have had their 22nd birthday as of Jan. 1 the year of the Jr. National Show in which they are exhibiting animals.

Reports were presented on Show Committee activities, U of I Sire Progeny Test, IGS (Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation), GeneSeek, WHR activities, Annual Meeting Plans and Shorthorn Foundation.

The Board approved funding the Fescue Tolerant DNA project with $7,000 to $10,000 and requested the Shorthorn Foundation share this funding 50/50. Regardless of the Foundation’s support, the ASA will proceed with the project and provide funding. Motion passed unanimously.

The Board approved as of Jan. 1, 2017 no new bull will have AI certificates released unless all AI Sire DNA requirements are met and no bull will be added to the list or become an AI non-certificate bull unless all AI Sire

President Mark Gordon called the conference call meeting to order Feb. 10, 2017 at 7:00 a.m.

Present: Mark Gordon, Robert Alden, Tom Turner, Nancy Grathwohl Heter, Marty Loving, Hugh Mooney and Executive Secretary, Montie Soules Conference Call Purpose: The IGS proposal to provide Genomically Enhanced EPDs to the Shorthorn Breed in March, 2017.

Montie Soules provided an update on the process & procedures the IGS science technicians will follow to provide the Genomically Enhanced EPDs in March.

The Board’s consensus was to move forward with the IGS proposal.

=Member Service Updates DNA Recommendations Please plan ahead and send DNA to the ASA Office a minimum of 3 weeks before you need results.

We recommend that you collect 2 samples per animal, send one off to ASA and keep one on file for yourself. Creating two samples allows you to have a backup ready if the lab needs a new sample to do a re-test on the animal, and ensures that you already have a sample on that animal if future testing is needed. The easiest way to collect DNA is with blood cards, plan ahead and have 2 blood cards per animal ready when you collect the DNA. Blood Cards are easy to store and have an indefinite shelf life. An easy way to organize and store your blood cards at home is by using a baseball card holder or a photo album. ASA is unable to store your samples in the office. You can call into the

office and request blood cards at any time.

If you have any questions about DNA testing, please contact the ASA Office.

Nate Tice, 2017 Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year

by Shelby Rogers, ASA Director of Youth Activities, Marketing and Communications Nate Tice started working at Sullivan’s Farms in Dunlap, Iowa, parttime while he was a freshman in college at Black Hawk College in Illinois. He has now been working there as the show barn manager for 12 years.

“I have always been in the show barn since I started in college,” Tice said. “I helped for a few years and then really got involved with that part. Josh does more sale work and I do the show work.

That is where I like to be.”

Tice grew up showing cattle all over the country. He attended many Junior Nationals as well as Louisville and Keystone. Although he mainly exhibited Shorthorns, he also showed cattle mainly steers - with Maine and Chianina influence.

As a long-standing employee with Sullivan’s Farms, Tice said he has experienced many National Champions from birth, to show barn, to champion banner.

“Seeing the progress of the cattle is probably one of my favorite things about working in the industry,” Tice said. “It is fun to see them when they are born, picking out our favorites, and then seeing how they turn out in the

ring. It isn’t always easy to pick the best ones but rewarding when we do find the ones that can win a banner.”

Tice said it was truly an honor to be selected as the 2017 Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year in Denver. He was surprised that he was selected by his peers for this prestigious award, and flattered when his name was announced.

“Nate is an outstanding person and show cattle manager,” said John Sullivan. “He possesses all around skills in breeding pasture, calving barn, genetic selection and show barn. He has developed a strong relationship with my daughter Sara and has taught her a lot about show barn dedication and work experiences.

We are grateful beyond words with being able to work with him. He is considered part of our family and we are proud we was able to win this award.”

Livestock Marketeers induct three into Hall of Fame

The Livestock Marketeers honored three inductees to the Hall of Fame for 2017: Jim Danekas, Wilton, CA, was honored posthumously and represented by his son-in-law, Matt Lohse; Bill Angell, LaSalle, CO; and Doug Paul, Edmond, OK.

The Livestock Marketeers — an informal fraternity of livestock fieldmen, auctioneers, sale managers and related livestock business leaders — met for their 52nd Annual Banquet at the National Western Club on January 14. The event was hosted by American Live Stock; master of ceremonies was J. Neil Orth, executive vice president of the AmericanInternational Charolais Association and 1984 Hall of Fame inductee.

The Livestock Marketeers group was formed in 1965 by Harry Green, Ross Miller and Claud Willett. Their purpose was to establish a fraternal organization of livestock professionals, and to make annual awards in order to encourage younger members of the industry to succeed in their chosen profession.

Bill Angell You’ll find Bill Angell in the livestock barns directing operations or visiting with exhibitors; in his office producing premium books or schedules and finalizing rules and regulations; or along ringside taking bids.

Raised on a stock farm near Lansing, MI, Bill competed on the Michigan State University livestock and meats judging teams under Harlan Ritchie before completing his undergraduate degree. He earned a graduate degree in animal science and coached the meats evaluation team at the University of Wisconsin, and then taught and coached the livestock judging team at the University of

As a member of the Michigan National Guard, Bill proudly served his country during the Vietnam crisis.

His livestock marketing career started with the American Polled Hereford Association, covering Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee, and increasing advertising for that territory by 200% in the first year. He also worked for Superior Livestock Auction, The Record Stockman, International Arabian Horse Association, and Southern States Cooperative.

Bill made his mark at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, serving as Yards and livestock manager for 10 years. He has also supervised the Weld County Fair in Greeley, CO, and currently serves as livestock manager of the Nebraska State Fair.

Despite the full show schedule, Bill can be found turning in bids at about 50 sales annually throughout the West. He’s the ringman wearing a patriotic tie featuring the American flag.

“He wants to work every sale,” noted auctioneer John Korrey of Iliff, CO. “The drive and passion that Bill has for the industry is second to none.”

“I’ve been blessed to work with some of the greatest professionals in our great industry. I tried to learn from the best, and it’s been a great ride for me,” Bill said. “We are professionals, and I think I’ll always be a Marketeer.”

Bill and his wife of 45 years, Donna, live at LaSalle, CO. They have three chil-

dren: Blake, Miki and Missy, and three grandchildren.

Doug Paul From the first steps of his career, Doug Paul has embarked on a path encompassing a broad range of livestock marketing and sales experiences. This path stemmed from a passion first fueled on a family acreage in Edna, KS, where he was involved with raising Suffolk sheep and Quarter Horses as 4-H and FFA projects.

Doug’s interests continued into collegiate years as part of successful livestock judging and rodeo teams. He attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, Miami, OK, and then Oklahoma State University (OSU) in Stillwater, graduating with a degree in agricultural education.

Doug went to work for the Drover’s Journal. He traveled as a fieldman for the publication, working sales primarily in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

In 1987, Doug moved to the American Simmental Association to help with The Register. As the magazine and association grew, so did Doug’s family. In 1989, he married his wife Leslie, and they soon had daughters, Brooke and Alexa.

“He was hard working even as a young man, and I feel fortunate to have discovered him early on and to have had him be a part of our team,” said Ken Holloway, a longtime Oklahoma cattleman,

founder of American Cattle Services and 2002 Livestock Marketeers Hall of Fame honoree.

Holloway hired Doug as a young man to work on his purebred cattle operation, Coyote Hills Ranch and later as a ringman for American Cattle Services sales.

“I am very proud to say he was part of our team and is still part of our team,” Holloway continued. “Too often, many of the other industries grab talented individuals in marketing and sales, and we don’t have the fortune to get them in agriculture. But we have had that fortune in Doug — to get and keep a talented individual among us.”

In the fall of 1989, Doug started DP Sales Services, Inc., a sales management company that heads up purebred cattle sales throughout the United States. He followed with the 1997 purchase of The Stock Exchange, a semi-monthly livestock sales publication. Involvement with The Stock Exchange would later prompt Doug’s affiliation with DV Auction; the Internet marketing service helped take The Stock Exchange online in 2005, and continues to reach customers across the country through online sales broadcasts, totaling more than 800 in 2016.

Among his expansive management and sales support has been the NAILE Select Simmental Sale for 15 years, the National Simmental Sale at the National Western Stock Show for 10 years, as well as the National Maine Anjou Sale at the National Western for 19 years.

“With this group, we all work together,” Doug told the Livestock Marketeers.

“I’ve had a lot of fun with my friends . . . and I have a lot of friends.”

very strong ties to the Angus community across the United States. He was a member of the National Western Club, served on the Livestock Publications Council board, was a longtime member and director of the Western States Angus Association, a lifetime member of the American Angus Association, and numerous other livestock affiliations. He was a diehard fan of the San Francisco Giants.

“Jim was absolutely one of the most organized people to work with,” said C.D. “Butch” Booker of Colfax, WA, who presented the Hall of Fame award.

“He attended to every detail. And there was nobody who could talk someone

into bidding one more time like Jim Danekas.”

“He was the most knowledgeable person you'd ever meet, regarding pedigrees of cattle. He brought a very professional side to the business that went back to the roots he came from,” Booker added. “He represented the total package — knowing the cattle, knowing where we were in the marketplace — and he really cared.

He was always very fair.”

Survivors include his wife, Sherry; daughters Danielle Danekas and Mercedes (Matt) Danekas-Lohse; and mother Valois “Frenchy” Danekas. =

Jim Danekas James “Jim” A. Danekas (1947-2016) of Wilton, CA, was honored posthumously. Born in South Dakota, he was very active on his family’s Blue Top Angus Farm, raising and exhibiting market steers and breeding heifers as he developed a strong passion for agriculture. Jim graduated from South Dakota State University before joining the U.S. Army, and was named manager of the Western States Angus Association following his discharge. This position took him to California, and helped him learn the ways of a livestock sales manager and auction ringman.

He later started his own entity, James Danekas and Associates. Jim and his wife, Sherry, grew the business with the incorporation of a publication division.

They published the California Cattleman Magazine and Angus, the Magazine. Later they would move on to start another, Western Cowman. The firm currently produces the Western Cowman, Angus Icon and Wagyu World.

=Junior Corner Buyer Beware When purchasing an animal, reputation is important. I’m not talking about a breeder’s reputation for winning, but their reputation for taking care of their customers. Often when purchasing an animal, we don’t think about the what if ’s: what if she doesn’t breed; what if he is sterile; what if… At the sale we are just looking at the bull, cow or show heifer prospect. Unfortunately, after you purchase that animal its fertility is not always guaranteed. In those instances, it would be important to have a breeder that is willing to back up their animals with a guarantee that the animal will be “breed-able”. However, if you purchase from someone that says the animal is sold “as is” (or doesn’t explicitly say the animal is guaranteed to breed), you could be left holding the halter of a very

expensive feeder calf.

One of my ideas to improve the Shorthorn Association would be to have the association create a registry of “Safe Sales”. Essentially the Breeders would go to the Shorthorn Association and say that they will guarantee the sale animals would be breed-able (in the case of bulls it would guarantee that the bull would breed). This is especially important for new Junior members and their parents who might not be familiar with different breeders and what to expect and watch out for as they start purchasing their Shorthorn cattle. Animals sold at these sales, that aren’t breed-able could be returned for either credit, or replacement at the agreement of the buyer and seller. The buyer could also use this Safe Sale in their promotion of the sale, let-

ting buyers know that their animals are guaranteed. This could help draw buyers to their sale, as well as, give the buyer some peace of mind, putting their hand up again at the sale. The knowledge that this show heifer or cow comes along with a guarantee (because mortuary insurance doesn’t cover a free martin) is a definite plus for new and old purchasers alike. A small change like this could help grow the Shorthorn industry and put additional confidence in the = purchase of a Shorthorn animal.

= Beef Business Artificial Insemination: It’s Not All Bull Before long, it will be time to AI your cows for next year’s spring calves. Most of you have done your research and selected your AI sires. If not, you still have time to prepare. We’ve all heard about AI selection from the bull side, but not enough about the other half of the mating equation: the cow. The ladies of the herd don’t always get the credit they deserve! Here are some tips to help you maximize returns from the females in your AI program.

1. Who do I AI? An AI program largely depends on three resources: time, money, and bull power. Incorporate as many females into your AI program as your resources will allow. Heifers are good candidates for AI, utilizing proven calving ease genetics.

Detailed production records help identify the mature cows that deserve a spot in the AI pen. The cows that have proven

they can raise an above average calf, breed back efficiently, are phenotypically correct, and have a good EPD profile are your best AI candidates. Cows that have raised sellable bulls and replacement females should be at the top of your AI list.

2. Big Picture Decision Making.

After figuring out which cows to AI, study them as a group. Nobody knows what your herd does well and what can be improved better than you do.

Identifying these traits simplifies bull selection, weeding out bulls that aren’t the right fit. Using multiple sires in a calf crop allows for some genetic variation and effectively compares sire groups.

Personally, I’ll use 2 different heifer bulls and 3 to 5 bulls on the mature cows.

3. The Perfect Fit. Once bulls are selected, focus on individual selections. The “little things”,

such as a minor structural flaw or a poor EPD, can be emphasized and corrected through specific matings. Utilize production records to know what bloodlines have worked before, as well as which ones didn’t live up to expectations.

If a cow raised a $10,000 bull last year, it won’t hurt to try the same mating again!

4. Get Them Bred and Wait!

The 283 days from conception to calving can seem like 2,830 days. There’s a lot of excitement waiting for those AI calves, hoping all your hard work results in your best calf crop. Searching for the perfect AI bull is fun, but don’t forget about the girls at home. They work hard to keep you in the Shorthorn business! =

by Sydney Miller, National Shorthorn Lassies Secretary The National Lassie Organization recently celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2016. Over the past 60 years the Lassies have evolved into a modern representation of the Shorthorn breeds heritage and history.

Yet with kilts made of Royal Stewart tartan, Lassies have and will continue to stand out in the cattle industry.

Previously located on Halstead Street, the Chicago International Livestock Exposition was the home of the first Lassie contest. It remained in Chicago throughout the duration of the show.

Penny Vance (Hale) was a queen contestant in 1969. She recalls the sisterhood bonding experiences,

including rooming with 21 other queen contestants during the entire contest and participating in numerous activities such as etiquette classes.

From the early 70’s until the late 90’s, the Lassie Queen contest alternated between Louisville, KY and Denver, CO as a part of the annual National Show. Jennifer Taylor (Braman) was a contestant in the 1995 contest and served as the National Lassie Queen. She was crowned at the National Western Stock Show in Denver Colorado and has distinct memories with her fellow queen contestants and co-queen, some of whom she is still friends with today.

Her favorite memories include a

hemming party that would take place before competing, all of the ladies would get together to hem their skirts among many other activities.

From 1998 to 2011 the contest was held in conjunction with the National Junior Shorthorn Show and was then moved back to the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky in 2012.

While the contest locations may have changed since 1956, the importance of the Lassies and their significance within the Shorthorn breed has remained constant and will continue to do so with the support and guidance of the Lassie organization and Shorthorn breeders nationwide. =

=News & Notes Texas Shorthorn Lassies Begin 60th Year

by Mary Bass, Publicity Officer 1957. She was Elizabeth Alexander of Pearland. To date 53 young ladies have worn the title of Texas Shorthorn Lassie Queen. The breed ambassadors are easily recognized in the Scottish kilt costume. The Shorthorn Princess program in Texas was begun in 1968 and on June 27, 1969 the first group of four princesses competed for the state queen title using scrapbooks, essays and personal interviews.

The next planned function of the Texas Shorthorn Lassies will be their annual meeting, May 6th at Tadmore Farms, John and Barbara Russell, Caldwell, Texas. =

The Texas Shorthorn Lassies, ladies auxiliary of the Texas Shorthorn Cattle Breeders Association, began a year long celebration of their 60th year with an afternoon tea on Saturday evening, January 28th in the Mural Room of The Gardens Restaurant at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens.

The national auxiliary was organized in 1956 to encourage and extend the influence of Shorthorn cattle breeding; to promote the interests of its membership; to stimulate greater activity and cultivate closer relations between them. The auxiliary arranges for exhibits at fairs, presents awards, publicizes the breed, provides reception committees and provides scholarships.

The Texas Shorthorn Lassies was officially organized in August 1957.

Lois (Mrs. Carson) Gibson, Houston, was the first president. The Shorthorn Lassie Queen is a promotional program of the auxiliary. The first Texas Shorthorn Lassie Queen appeared in

As of July 1, 2017, all DNA has to be processed by ASA’s designated lab (GeneSeek). Only tests results completed by ASA’s designated lab (GeneSeek) will be uploaded to the Digital Beef registry. All DNA must be sent directly to the ASA office in Kansas City.

Contemporary Groups If you enter your calf crop into the registry in several different sessions, you must indicate which contemporary group each calf belongs to. To do this, use management codes (the “Mgmt” box) and the “Season” drop down menu when submitting calves to the registry. All calves in a contemporary group must have the same management code and same season submitted in order to be properly grouped together. If these are not used, the registry will group calves by the day they are submitted.

New Board-Instated Rule As of the most recent board meeting held on both March 6th and 7th a new ruling on cows enrolled in the WHR program has been instated. On the rare occasion that a WHR assessed cow has multiple natural calves born during an assessment year, ASA policy now allows for a reduced cost of the registration for the second calf.

The following conditions must be met: • The calves must be registered before 12 months of age.

• The assessed cow either had twins or had a calf born early in the assessment year and calved again toward the end of the assessment year.

= Beef Blurb Pump Up The National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference is officially just a few months away (112 days from me writing this article)! I can’t believe it is already almost summer time and show time.

This year is going to be an exciting year in Tulsa, Oklahoma, because we have a great committee of Oklahoma Shorthorn Association members and a fantastic junior board.

It may be my first official year being the youth activities director which is a little scary taking on the Junior

Nationals. But to say I am excited is an understatement! I have been working on plans almost 24/7 to make sure everything is ready for one of the most exciting weeks of the year!

Just wanted to give a reminder of deadlines that are coming up. Entries will be only online this year, the entry and ownership deadline is May 1st and we also have a late entry deadline of May 15th. The entry forms can be found at juniorshorthorn.com. The junior board applications are due April 10 and scholarships are due May 1st.
