Welcome‌

Welcome to the 4th Annual Caraway Red Angus Bull Sale. This offering of bulls include the first sons out of our newest herd sire-Loosli Hughes 437 that we are excited about. His sons will add the performance you desire for your calf crop! We have a passion for producing seedstock that will be beneficial to purebred producers and commercial operations alike. The cattle business is in our blood and through our hard work and dedication to our herd, we can offer the quality cattle our customers come back for year after year. While each of us were raised in different aspects of the industry-Jon from a purebred operation and Blair from a commercial and feedlot family, we have combined our knowledge and passion to offer genetics that are highly efficient. Our cattle are all handled by us. The bulls are hand fed by Jon and we work them in a low-stress setting. The heifers are broke to lead and are worked with ahead of the sale. If you walk among cows in our herd they are gentle and have calmer dispositions. This has led our daughter, Gabrielle to help out on the ranch and someday our son, Parker will help, too. We look forward to seeing all of you at the sale. With having the sale on Monday, it can be difficult for those who work to attend. All cattle can be viewed ahead of time and phone bids placed the day of the sale. You can arrange a viewing of the cattle by contacting Jon or Blair prior to the sale.

-Jon, Blair, Gabrielle, & Parker Caraway 3

Using EPDs to help make your selection! HerdBuilder Index (HB): An index used to estimate differences in profitability for the sustainability of the cowherd. This index was created on the assumption that an operation raises its own replacement females, and terminally markets the remainder of the calf crop on a quality based grid. Given that replacement heifers are retained, primary influence is placed on maternal traits such as Stay, HPG, and CE. MARB, YG, and growth EPDs also impact this index but to a lesser degree. GridMaster (GM): An index used to estimate differences in profitability for those whose primary goal is to maximize profitability in the feedyard and on the rail. This index was created on the assumption that an operation markets all of the calf crop terminally on a quality based grid with no replacement females being raised. MARB, YG and growth EPDs are traits of primary importance in this index. Calving Ease Direct (CED): Predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted from two year-old heifers. Selection on actual birth weight is flawed. It is influenced by non-genetic factors such as nutrition and weather. While the BW EPD removes these nongenetic factors, the CED EPD is the best predictor of calving ease. CED includes variation in BW plu other influential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc. The the CED EPD, the less calving difficulty. Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of the CED EPD. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth form birth to weaning. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Milk: Predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal’s daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves. Maintenance Energy (ME): Predicts the differences in maintenance energy requirements of mature daughters of a bull. The lower the ME EPD, the less feed daughters require to maintain body condition. Stayability (STAY): Predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters remaining in the herd until at least six years of age. Females that don’t stay in the herd that long are losing money, and they also contribute to higher rate of replacement females that the rancher can’t cash crop.
