From the heart of cow country!

FOR

decades, these Caffee Ranch cows are often most noted for “their look”, but our Maine-influenced herd matrons are more than just a pretty face. Their genetics take them beyond the banner wins and provide a living for our family. As many folks know, every cow on this place is one I raised, in fact, I haven’t bought a female since 1995. I can look them up in my book for generations back. That “calving book” traces back to cow records from 1972 and we implemented AI into our program in 1974. Each of these females was mated with the idea that we would be calving them out in the Spring. We selected proven cows from every age group except the wet 2’s and anything older than a 2013 model. We know these girls will go on and produce for their new owners.

less of what the cow is. With the high demand in our bulls and females for breeding stock we have been breeding more Simmental and Maine in recent years. However, we still breed some for show steers. I remember Bud DeJong saying the exotic breeds were good if they were 1/2 Angus. I think he was pretty close. When you look at these cows you will see we use Angus on the Maine’s and Maine’s back on the Angus for more than one generation. My goal was always to raise a cow that is good to look at, has a good udder, will raise her calf and has some power to her. We don’t target any one certain person with our program. Not just commercial producers or just club calf interests or someone looking for show cattle, but people that want eye appealing cattle that perform.

Our environment doesn’t allow livestock that need to be pampered; While we raise our own females, we maintain steady progression in our cows take care of themselves year-round, in fact this sale our homegrown genetics by utilizing crossbreeding and sampling offering hasn’t had the feed poured them for presentation. All the AI sires, you’ll see that in not just the cow make ups but in the way pictures and videos of the cows were in November when the cows they are mated as well. were and still are on pasture, the only supplementation they will receive is prairie hay. We A.I. using natural heats and heat detect for 30 days. These cows are used to being handled and most of the time Nancy gets them in If you have any questions please call. These cows will last a long herself. When it comes time to decide what to breed them to we time if you take care of them. I had two cows that were 17 years mate everything maternally oriented for their first 3 calves, regard- old this year, raised their 15th calf and bred back.

Thank you!

Dave,Nancy, Lacey & Trig

SELLS OPEN & READY TO FLUSH AT TOG IN SIOUX CENTER

This is one of those cows that works mated to anything, and she’s been bred for Maine’s, Simmis, and to make a show steers. Her daughters are making amazing cows and she’s sold plenty of bulls in our bull sales. Recently, the Shalla family from Iowa had a very successful campaign with a HIA steer by her, including being 3rd overall at Aksarben. The Beitelspacher family from SD had one heck of a run with a HIA steer of 16 CAFFEE RANCH \\ DROUGHT REDUCTION SALE

hers too! Baylor Bonham campaigned a really good I Believe steer from her. S33 currently resides at Trans Ova in Sioux Center waiting to be flushed by her new owner! I’m sad to see this cow go - she’s taken us so many places, and allowed us to dream bigger than we ever thought possible, bringing in over $75,000 her 2021 production! Her frozen genetics sell as Lot’s 58 and 59.

We love the look of this female, she’s our kind, and so versatile. The fact that she goes back to S33 is just a perk! She produced a Witness bull calf a few years ago that was incredible, and she’s clicked with HIA too. Her Sundance daughter, F06, is in our herd and looks super. She has a Makin Time bull calf this year, and he’ll for sure be a stud in our bull sale. So far the B33 embryos average $932 when we’ve sold them and she flushes extremely well! Maine-Anjou Influence

THE MAIN REASON FOR MAINE’S Dave explains his reasoning for taking advantage of heterosis. “I can market a Maine-influenced calf on our fall private treaty sale in September because they have eye appeal, and our Maine x Angus bulls we sell in the spring have the biggest scrotal measurements and yearling weights of all the bulls. That shot of Maine adds so much value and versatility to our cowherd. Our newest venture is crossing Maine cows with Simmental bulls.” We started our success with using Maine’s and there will always be a Maine influence in our cowherd. They just work in so many aspects of our program.

14

In the spring of 2020 we sold a Maternal Made daughter out of B14 to Jim Moylan. B14’s 2017 calf was a Million Dollar Secret heifer that we kept for a replacement. Her number is E14 and she has a bull this year that will be in our 2022 bull sale. B14’s dam, W12, is a Final Answer daughter that always raised one to keep or make the sale. Her first calf was a Limestone Jupiter daughter Y12 that raised a Maternal Made bull that sold in our 2019 bull sale to Brandon Horn going to Texas for $6,500. This is one of those cow families that works for generations!

For over a decade Bismarck has kept a place in our program, proving the phenotype of his progeny is timeless and his capabilities as a cow sire are legendary. Our first experience in his usage was as a heifer bull. It was easy to see he made the kind we like to keep around here… sleek fronted, easy keeping and fertile. His daughters have the perfect udder structure for our harsh calving environment. The longevity and versatility is tremendous; we still have the first 5 daughters we kept in the herd and their calves averaged $4,000 in our fall sale (this doesn’t even include their sons in the upcoming March sale!). We’ve gotten in the habit of breeding all our Maine replacements to Bismarck with the intent to keep them. This cross has been a lucrative one, creating that sweet mix of Maine Angus female as well as producing bull calves worthy to add to the sale offering. To date, Bismarck has generated over $350,000 worth of progeny for our family and our cow roster boasts 64 daughters in the herd.

Maternal Made Influence

Chad Thompson called us, “Dave I’ve got a bull I’d like you to try, I’ll give you the semen.” “No,” Dave said, “I’m going to come look at him and if I like him I’ll buy it.” This conversation started what is now the most lucrative sire used at our place in history! When I saw the bull, he was so complete, had the mass and the bone I was looking for in a Maine bull with rib shape and a long neck. I had been looking for something, preferably a Maine to use on my young Angus based cows to power them up. I got 30 straws from Chad that day. We got great conception and really liked the calves, but we weren’t sure how much interest we’d have in selling heifers on our fall pasture sale. We had always focused more on steers. We started with five heifers in the sale that fall, then we took two out, we just didn’t think anyone would bid on them, feeling our customers would not be looking to buy heifers that time of year. We were wrong! We averaged $21,167 on those three head. Maternal Made has not only produced our highest selling heifers and bulls to date, but he has changed how we sell cattle, what we can sell, and shaped our program these last 7 years. We use at least 100 straws of Maternal Made every year.

Million $ Secret Influence

Million $ Secret was our high selling bull that year commanding $10,500 by Troy Baloun. Troy collected him and we used him on our low percent Maine cows. We LOVE the daughters, they are some of our best producing cows. A Secret daughter raised a $9,250 bull, selling in our 2021 bull sale, it was her first calf! She has a heifer this year in our keeper pen.

Secrets dam, Y21, is now a donor in our herd. She has never missed, we have bred her Maine and Simmental and she always lands one in a sale, unless I keep her daughters. I always put all my Maternal Made daughters in our annual fall sale, except hers. She had one of my favorite Maternal Made heifers a few years back so I kept her. We aren’t offering Y21 in our sale due to her age, but lot 53 offers the opportunity to purchase 3 Garth embryos out of her. These embryos are full sibs to The Dance, her high selling bull, commanding $12,000 in our 2020 bull sale. We don’t have any more Secret semen out there, capitalize on these two females because there aren’t anymore!

Background photo of Y21 dam of Million $ Secret & her embryos sell as lot 53.

E26 is just getting her career started! This year E26 raised a Something About Mary bull calf that will be in our 2022 online bull sale. Last year she raised a heifer that we kept for a replacement. Simmental cows started Dave and Nancy out before they were married then started going the show steer route, Maine-Anoju cattle had more to offer at that time for the direction of the steer world. Seventeen years ago we started to like the look and the type the breed had to offer so we started back in again slowly, currently we now use 100 straws of Simmental bulls a year.
