Miss Margie 9169 produced the Reserve Champion of Division III at the 2022 NJSS, exhibited by Charlie Sutherland. I feel certain that the Worldwide sisters, Miss Margie 2210 and Miss Margie 2209, are capable of following in her footsteps at the highest levels of competition. But the best is yet to come! How will the Margie 9169 sisters be mated to positively impact the Shorthorn breed with their own progeny? That’s my WHY, and truly the fun part of being a lifelong student of Shorthorns.

From head to tail, and every phenotypic trait in between, the vision Lynn Ewald and I had of the mating of Miss Margie 9169 to Worldwide is evident! These two females will start a new branch on the Margie 6109 family tree – read 6109’s intriguing Revival Cow Family Story on the next page, and find out how Lynn and I acquired the dam of Lots 1A and 1B. (Ella and Leo, take note! Your uncle has given you a great lesson on how to conduct a successful agriculture project!)

DFS Miss

Steve French noticed a very good Aviator heifer calfout of SULL Miss Margie 9169 featured in the 2020Du-Lynn Sale, consigned by Cedar Lane Farms.

The tabulation of the Margie family in America started in 1977 with the importation of Shannon Margie from Ireland (see page 11). But jump ahead four generations to learn the story of DFS Margie 6109. Lynn Ewald and Pete Hunter discovered her in the 1997 Dean Farms production sale. They bid $900 to split her off her dam and take her home. Sara Hunter showed her successfully – Reserve Grand at Kansas City and Division Champion at all the other national shows. Margie 6109 was spotted at NAILE by Col. Alvin Greenhorn who declared her “the best Shorthorn female he’d ever seen.” According to Dave Greenhorn, his father determined then and there to buy her. 6109 was offered in the Genetics Online Sale in December, 1998. The two-year-old had her first calf the night before the sale in an Iowa snow storm with Pete on constant watch. The storm kept the Colonel from traveling to the sale but with assistance on the phone from Don Cagwin the Greenhorns won the bid at $5,700. Margie 6109 was later sold privately to Sullivan Farms for $10,000 – but not before Greenhorn Cattle Co. mated her to Solution and Trump to create the three high impact Margies pictured below. Wait, there’s another 6109 daughter...read below!

She finished her run at Denver where she achieved National Champion Female. Like her dam, 542 continues to produce exceptional offspring. At 2021 Ohio State Fair, both champi ons were 542 daughters, and at 2022 Ohio Beef Expo her daughter by Red Knight captured Champion Shorthorn. This is a red hot mating!

Kolten has had an illustrious show career with Maxim 81 at the last four NJSS. She was a crowd favorite winning purple in her Division at all four shows – a feat never before accomplished. Kolten even talks about bringing her out again! Her embryos were high sellers at the Springtime Revival. DNA GENOTYPING & GENETIC TESTING • A DNA genotype is utilized in establishing parentage and in determin ing the presence of a genetic condition. Animals do not have to be DNA genotyped or free of a genetic condition to be registered. However, if an animal becomes an A.I. sire or a donor dam all required genetic testing must be completed and a DNA record must be on file with ASA prior to registering any progeny. Recognized genetic conditions that require DNA testing are explained on the ASA web site: www.shorthorn. org. Genetic conditions “free” (F) and “carrier” (C) that have been reported to the ASA are continually updated on the website. Buyers are urged to consult the ASA web site for the most up-to-date list of test results for all genetic conditions

Spend some time studying the lineage of the various branches of the modern Margie families and you’ll find they all trace back to Shannon Margie of Ireland who entered the American Shorthorn Association herdbook in 1976. After she was a “no sale” in the 1977 Irish Sweepstakes Sale, George Alden imported Shannon Margie within a group of bred heifers. Little could he have imagined her impact on the American Shorthorn breed! In the last 25 years, Shannon Margie has produced countless national champions and foundation females. From Shannon Margie came AF Shannon Margie 924, then the Dream Girls, Dream Ladies and Sweet Dreams. The branches of Margies featured on pages 2 – 10 descend from DFS Margie 6109, the great great granddaughter of Shannon Margie. On page 30, you’ll see that the dominant Lady Crystal line stems from – you guessed it – Shannon Margie!4thShannonfromgenerationsfourtheoriginalMargie,damofLot12

An opportunity to see the results of cutting edge genetics to help make future mating decisions.

Clint was a Shorthorn man from birth, an international show judge, salesman extraordinaire, and he served as Executive Secretary of American Shorthorn Association from 1941 to 1951. He left the association to join his boyhood Shorthorn friend Frank Harding, and Frank’s father F.W. Harding, in forming American Live Stock Insurance Co., but Clint never left behind his love for the breed he helped make great. Steve kicked off two days of discussion with a great question that had perplexed him for some time, “Clint, how are we going to get Shorthorn breeders to focus again on the cow families that made the breed great?”

LuckyCharm

sellsBUCKEYEGCCCHARMOct.1 FULL SISTER to LOT 22

Lot 21 is a double bred Lucky Charm with the influence of both Hot Commodity and Aviator. That sets up interesting options in her matings down the road! Note that we bred her to Lookout in early August for her first calf. Wow – get in early on Lookout! Texas Charm T21 is sound and feminine with straight lines and well-balanced with ample center body. You’ll like her long, sure stride with plenty of flex. Admired by all during her show career, Charm 7102 was Grand Champion of the 2018 NAILE Junior Show. Her dam, Sonny’s Charm 7102, was Reserve Grand Champion of the 2007 NAILE. One of my personal favorites in our production sale on October 1 is GCC Buckeye Charm, full sister to Lot 22. It required major “motivational speaking” by Steve French (as only he can do) to persuade me to let this heifer pregnancy sell in The Revival. She is truly the best we have to offer!

Roses areRed

The dam of Lot 23, Roses Are Red 2009, is owned by Enix Farms. She did a fantastic job raising her first calf. Watch for her future production as she makes her place in the elite donor pen!

Roses Are Red daughters have really been competitive and, better yet, they are top level producers. Roses Are Red 2208 will be popular on sale day – she’s so deep-bodied and great-fronted and sound, as are all the Worldwide offspring. She’ll see her share of backdrop photos.

We could not be more excited about these Propel x Max Rosa 3123 full sisters. Max Rosa 2223 hits you really, really hard. She is so picture perfect in her design, a real show heifer! This lady can compete at any level and certainly can be a donor for your herd. She’s a true moneymaking opportunity. Now, Max Rosa 2222, at first glance, looks like the Number 2 heifer of the pair but there are some advantages to being the last consignor to send your footnotes! 2222 has taken off since picture time and is certainly a barn favorite. She is a tremendously big-bodied, big-topped and stout-made solid red show heifer. 2222 is a different type than 2223 but she could be the one to beat down the road. You be the judge – these two heifers are really, really good and will create a lot of buzz in Beaverton. Buyers Bonus: Max Rosa 2222 is extra quiet and would be a great beginner show heifer for a young showman!

Little Cedar Cattle Co. will offer TWO PUREBRED SHORTHORN STEERS (both sired by Worldwide!) on September 24 following the semen lots. Come see them on sale day or view them on video on CCi.Live 26

Simply put, this Aviator x Max Rosa is magical! When I saw the mating of Lot 33 presented in a package of embryos offered in the Schrag Family Event Sale I knew I had to have them. I remember Lot 33’s dam being shown by David Smith at NAILE and she still leaves an impression. Max Rosa’s popularity never wanes. PS Troubadour, the sensational 995-lb. Shorthorn calf that was crowned International Grand Champion Steer over all breeds at the International Live Stock Exposition in Chicago on November 27, 1956, was such a personable bovine that he borrowed a page from the human book. It all started when PS Troubadour was purchased by The Greenbrier Hotel of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia for the (then) record price of $20.50 a pound, a total of $20,397.50. There was immediate demand from animal husbandry professors for personal appearances by PS Troubadour at universities and colleges so students could see what constituted beef cattle perfection. A few weeks later, PS Troubador made his debut on network television and was seen by 30,000,000 people in the US and Canada. Edward R. Murrow took his “Person to Person” cameras to Acadia Farms, home of the famed Cleveland industrialist Cyrus Eaton, breeder of the prize Shorthorn steer. Hardly had the program ended before urgent new invitations began pouring in for PS Troubadour to appear up and down the countryside. A comprehensive train tour was arranged, educational in purpose, international in scope, ranging over a broad area. Throughout his journeys, the appealing little Shorthorn won countless friends, both professional and amateur.

Lot 34C – I flushed Picture Perfect to Dream Maker using conventional semen in hope she’ll produce another major AI sire like Worldwide. The breed needs great bulls, and this Dream Maker mating will put you in the driver’s seat of the semen selling business!

MAV Picture Perfect is one impressive beast. Remember that I bought her from the Vogel family in the 2016 Springtime Revival for $3,000!

Lot 34B – Dream Maker x Picture Perfect has to be one of the most exciting heifer pregnancies selling in The Revival, quite possibly in the entire fall sale season! This mating promises a unique female of investment quality.

The Lucy family always has lots of style and 09K is no exception. Lot 47 is a laser-fronted and extremely stylish heifer. Her dam did very well in the show ring in Canada.

The dam of Lot 46 was just 22 months old when 02K was born. With ARG Hector as her sire, the calving ease was built right in. It’s a critically important “real world” trait whether you’re calving cows in Argentina or Canada. The Jane family of Crawfdown are historically hardworking, gooduddered cows – dependable as far back as you can trace. Jane 02K is very sound in her structure and well-balanced. Her Argentine genetics are balanced by the known quantities of Aviator and Martindell The Answer on her dam’s side, sire lines that will make mating decisions interesting!

Lucy 09K’s genetic base and phenotypic profile will present many options for matings to the leading sires of North America.

bringing specially selected HERD BUILDER HEIFERS across the border this year. Distinguished Crawfdown Cow Families blended with the Genetics of Hector, Low Rider and Aviator

It’s well known in the U.S. that Low Rider makes good cows and his daughters have worked great here at Crawfdown. We like low birth weights and easy keepers – always have, always will.

I hear that Julie and Jen are unveiling a new after-dinner drink starring Faygo Pop. Line ‘em up, Renee and Chuck! Come to the Revival for fun and fellowship. If you’ve been in the Shorthorn business long, you’ve surely heard of the great Myrtle Bo lineage. The female who started our Shorthorn passion here at Nebo Ridge, Myrtle’s Date, continues that legacy. She’s affectionately known as “Bo“ around the farm. Bo and her offspring have hung several banners for the Archer family. Myrtle’s Date was a multi-time Top Five Jackpot Show Winner, Division Reserve at KILE, and Divison Champion at Pennsylvania Farm Show. Her first heifer calf by No Worries went on to follow in her footsteps as Reserve Champion Bred & Owned Mainetainer Female at KILE. Her recent offspring has excited us the most – BAA Bo’s Heavenly Style was Champion Bred & Owned ShorthornPlus at the 2021 NJSS in Louisville and was a barn favorite of many. The added mass, dimension, and impeccable structure that comes with Bo’s offspring have garnered her fans nationwide. This is the first opportunity to acquire eggs out of our leading donor. We will make them for you in late October with a mating to your choice of four great sires. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by!

This young show heifer is the daughter of Regal 7D, Toronto Royal Senior Heifer Calf Champion. She’s just an April calf, so give her some time and she will come along. The best thing is, she’s as quiet as you’ll find one and would be a perfect first project for a youngster and their family. If you breed for ShorthornPlus snap her up!

Lot 57 is a first calf heifer sired by Aviator that is a maternal half sister to our Lot 31 Weston Mary cow/calf pair that topped the 2022 Springtime Revival sale at $16,500. The background of Weston Dynamo’s retro genetics (he was called the Maternal Powerhouse in the ‘70s) gave us the answer as to why Weston Mary first calf heifers are almost the size of some mature cows. KSS Aviator’s Weston Mary 2038 ET has been shown and is very gentle. If I needed some shade, I might consider taking a nap under her. (Please don’t try this at home!) Add this Aviator cow to your program. She is a great young female and has a bright future that will lead to endless opportunities to add many positive traits to your herd. Lot 58 – Woodlawn Farms is offering full interest in their donor Bobby’s Girl 120E. She’s safe to Current Commodity! She produced 16 embryos from her first, and only, flush. Her heifers and bulls have been impressive and have shown well at the national level. Her son, Intrepid, sold in 2021 Revival to the Penrod family, DAP Cattle Co. He earned Reserve Spring Bull Calf Champion at 2021 NAILE. Bobby’s Girl is easily handled and nice to be around – that’s a real bonus when giving donor shots! Lot 58A – These are the only embryos by Lookout offered in the sale and I predict a genetic explosion! If you like this mating, better step up and own these four eggs. We’re gonna be very stingy with the rest! We’ve sold a lot of Bobby’s Girl females in the Revival Sales of the past and have had great success. Here we are with the Worldwide son “Universe” and we sure think a lot of him! Take a look at his maternal sister, Lot 58 also selling, and you’ll get a glimpse of the traits he gained from his dam. Universe is super sound, nice-fronted and very stout. Here’s your new herd sire –Worldwide son from the DAM of Bobby’s Girl 120E

Our visitors always point and ask, “What is that cow?” Rosette has produced a Division Champion at Kansas City and Class Winners at NAILE. Her steer calf by Worldwide is very good. He’ll sell with another Worldwide son after the semen sale. Her son proves she gets her job done very well despite milking only three quarters. Rosette is due in March to the Thermal Energy son Equator who sold last year to DeLisle Farms and is being used naturally by Ron & Judy Alden, Vaughn Farms and Capstone Farms.
