| KINDERGARTEN ON HURON ST.

My kindergarten aims to provide a learning environment for children through play and imagination. Through defined spatial qualities, it inspires children to occupy and utilize spaces differently. The classrooms are designed to be regularly shaped with limited windows to provide ample natural light, which promote concentration and focused learning. While the indoor play space is designed into a zigzag form, the irregularity of the space hence maximizes space for play and circulation. The cascading floor plates creates different pockets of activity zones that encourages social engagement, free flow circulation and areas for creativity. My wild card is the theatre that is public facing and is located at the northeast corner, visible to the public. During off hours of the kindergarten, the indoor play space is open for the public to access as mini-open theaters. In the urban context, the orientation of entrance of the kindergarten is an extension from the Robarts’ path across the street. The ground floor of the design is also freed up for park space for families and users of the site as a structure for play during off-hours.

Location: Little Portugal, Toronto, Canada Studio Type: 3rd Year Design Studio - Individual Work Design Program: Library +Community Center The site is located at the intersection between an aging community and one that is gentrifying. While wanting to create a modernized community hub for both communities, rich local cultures and built form would be respected majorly through texture and materiality of the new building. Bricks are a predominant building material found in many old Toronto neighborhoods, and hold a unique tectonic ability to layer itself - not just visually, but also resonating on how the neighborhood was built up, through layers of changing trends. Hence, the tectonics of brick is further developed into an architectural expression for the building from inside out.

8

| LITTLE PORTUGAL LIBRARY + COMMUNITY CENTER

The wood finish is also introduced to represent an interruption. Although different in nature, this dual materiality plays into the interaction of old and new.

SITE ANALYSIS

The concept of layering, identified as a unique trait of the primary material - bricks, are also implemented on facade design and interior partition layouts and bulkhead designs

CONCEPT | TIMELINE OF FORT MODIFICATION & HISTORIC REFERENCE Frankfurt green belt used to be its fort since 1572, when the population expanded outside of the wall, the fort was into a moat and later into todays green belt. The form of the entrance bridge is a continuation of the form of fort, creating a visual linkage between green belt and Frankfurt Am Main.

The proposal is inspired by the history of Frankfurt’s star-shaped fort in 1572 for defense. The points of these fort projections created lookouts of overseeing and defending around the inner city. As the city expanded rapidly in 1808, it was decided that the city no longer needed the city walls, thus replacing them with garden plots. It was not until 1991 that the Frankfurt government decided to set up laws to protect and regulate the greenbelt. The greenbelt not only acts as a buffer between the new town and historic area, but it also facilitates an underground rainwater collection system. Although the greenbelt is a very prominent feature of the city, its relationship with River Am Main is very weak especially when it is no longer a feature of isolation. Upon site visits, it is also noted that the ends/beginnings of the greenbelt are disconnected visually and physically from the river by traffic lanes. A visibly grand entrance linking the two entities was established in order to invite more Frankfurters and visitors to experience this interesting dialogue. When one approaches an access point to the lower river edge, there are often two impressions given off to its visitors - a preview of what is to expect or an interior that completely contrasts from the exterior. However, for this particular site, it is believed that a gradual transitional path is the most suitable approach to link the two distinct features. This transition can be seen as two competing forces that needs a common ground, through physical approach (circulation and typological differences) and materiality.

Location: Cornerstone Fine Furnitures, 2886 Dundas West Work Type: Window Installation @ TODO 2015 Position: Project Leader Production: 3D Modeling + Diagram + Photographer Photokeratitis was a window installation done for a furniture storefront. The idea of the installation was to accentuate the tactility of furnitures displayed and sold from this company. Using a MDF skeletal structure coated with paper fins, with electric fans installed around the installation, creating an illusion of a living, breathing wall at the storefront. Drawing the pass-byer’s attention towards the installation as well as the furnitures displayed at the two oculuses. Through this project, a lot of prototyping was done before making a final design decision. During the design process, I am also exposed to an extensive variety of digital tools (e.g. grasshopper in Rhino modeling) and workshop experiences (e.g. access to tools to build prototypes).

A star that suddenly increases in brightness and then slowly returns to its natural state over time. The hanging structure proposed increases in brightness as people approach it; the closer the person is, the brighter the structure becomes. The use becomes engulfed by a bright space, surrounded by tessellating tetrahedrons. Each surface of the tessellation contains a reflective surface, the closest of which is an infinity mirror that resonates the bright space. These mirrors reflect all of the light on the structure infinitely, providing the experience of being in the cosmos themselves.

Through this project, Arduino is used to program the LED light strips, in which when one approaches the installation, he or she will trigger a sensor, and the installation will increase or decrease brightness and changes color as programed.

Location: Hong Kong Professional Involvement Team Members (2): Stephanie Tung, Gigi Yip Organizer, Designer and Builder, Photographer The Social Dock is a self-initiated independent project, a design build proposal for a campaign that advocates for public space designs in Hong Kong. This event was organized and called for open proposals to be submitted regarding their long term goal in transforming one of Hong Kong’s busiest vehicle-only streets to a pedestrian zone. On Sept 25 2016, Des Voeux Road was closed for this event. Our installation encouraged a pause – a rest area - for the Hong Kong people, a community so used to the fast-paced lifestyle. The form of our project was inspired by geographical history of the street; Des Voeux Road was once the water edge of Hong Kong in the 1930s. While other coastal cities made good use of their water edges as recreational use, parks, promenades, Hong Kong has still been neglecting this significant feature and is planning to one day close up the harbor. We brought back the water elements to allow people to think of our water edge as more of a possible public space generator instead of something seemingly non-approachable. The form is also inspired by several water edge conditions found in Hong Kong, including stone mounts near beaches, extended concrete decks, etc. We were inspired to create a streetscape that wasn’t commonly seen in Hong Kong streets.

20

| THE SOCIAL DOCK

We collected wood pallets, which are a major construction component easily found anywhere in Hong Kong, given it is a common tool for delivering goods. It not only reminds people of the city of Hong Kong as a port/trading hub, but also the allegory of the harbor.

During my employment at dbdbdb, I was involved in both architectural work and marketing work. In terms of architecturerelated work, I was involved with preparing drawings for permit submissions, visualization of concepts and Revit modelling for several residential projects (including Studio Emerson, Badgerow and Cortleigh). In terms of marketing-related work, I was the photographer of built projects and managing dbdbdb’s website.
