The last six years of Darren's life were spent night-to-night in an emergency shelter. "It was hell. I knew it was time. Coming to Step, into a clean and safe environment... it was just amazing. It’s just little things that can lead to bigger things.”

Just nine months ago, Chris wasn't on speaking terms with his sons.

“They had every reason to be mad. I couldn't stop drinking, and wasn't holding up my part of the bargain of being a dad. It was kind of a mixed bag. They wanted me to get help but here I was once again, abandoning the family.

"It took a few months. I didn’t see them at the holidays, neither one of them wanted to have anything to do with me. I had to accept that. It was going to take a long time to get well again."
