Look for these reef buddies!

These animals work together to make the coral reef a happy, healthy place. The reef also keeps them healthy and safe. As you read the story, look out for these animals in the pictures!

Plankton are tiny creatures that many other animals in the reef eat.

Parrotfish scrape algae off the coral and keep it clean.

Sea turtles need the reef for safety and food.

Manta rays eat extra plankton and keep the water clear.

The octopus explores and hides inside small holes.

Ghost pipefish hide in the reef among the sea grass.

Blue skies and calm waters — a perfect day for diving!

We set out in a little boat, hoping for a BIG adventure!

We put on our fins and masks. We are going to explore the coral reef!

Ask: What do you think they will see?

Wow! The reef is full of fish!

The fish are zooming around. It is like a big busy city.

Around the coral, small fish are hiding to stay safe from the big fish.

Ask: Which fish is the smallest? Can you point to the biggest fish?

Parrotfish nibble algae on the coral and keep the reef clean so it can grow!

Thank you parrotfish!

Can you spot the Nudibranch? It helps clean the coral too.

Thank you nudibranchs!

This trumpetfish changed colour to try and blend in with a school of yellow tang. The reef gives him lots of friends.

Ask: Do you know any other animals that blend in to look like what’s around them?

We see clownfish swimming through wavy tentacles. The anemone stingers don’t hurt them, and the clown fish protect the anemone and bring it food. They help the reef, and the reef helps them.

We see an eel having its teeth cleaned by little fish. These fish want to give us a scrub too! Nibble nibble, rub rub!

Ask: Would you like a fish to help brush your teeth?

An octopus plays hide-and-seek with a red grouper. They love the reef, and the reef loves them.

Say: Look carefully, scientists! Can you spot the octopus hiding in the reef?

The octopus wins at hide and seek! They’re masters of disguise.

Pipefish are great at hiding and blending in, too. Can you spot the two ghost pipefish in this picture?

Two whitetip reef sharks are resting near the bottom. They love their cave. When we swim closer, they dart away.

Ask: How do you think sharks sleep?

We follow a sea turtle as he pokes around the reef looking for a nice sea sponge to munch on. He gets food from the reef.

Oh! Do you see it? A manta ray glides through the water. It eats plankton so the reef can get sunlight. And the reef is happy.

Say: Spread your arms and glide like a manta ray!

We are happy too. What a great dive! We can’t wait to go again.
