The USB port connects to your computer.

The GPIO pins connect to sensors and motors.

IMPORTANT IDEA

Every electrical circuit needs: Power GPIO pins use 3.3 volts only.

Ground Without Ground (GND), the circuit will not work.

Never connect higher voltage.

GETTING STARTED

Install Thonny 1. Open your web browser.

2. Go to: thonny.org 3. Download Thonny for your computer.

4. Open the installer.

5. Follow the instructions.

6. Open Thonny.

7. Select English.

Thonny is the program where you write Python code.

Install MicroPython 1. Unplug your Pico.

2. Hold the BOOTSEL button.

3. Plug the Pico into your computer while holding the button.

4. Release the button.

Now the Pico is in boot mode.

1. In Thonny, look at the bottom right corner.

2. Select MicroPython (RP2040).

3. Click Install MicroPython and wait for installation to finish.

Your Pico is now ready to run Python code.

Project 1 :

Botanical Sensor INTRODUCTION Plants, like animals, need water and minerals to survive. When water is poured on plant roots, it is absorbed in root hair cells and transported through xylem, one of two transport tissues in vascular plants. Then it transpires, or evaporates, from the surface of the leaves through stomata. Humidity sensors report the amount of water vapor in the air, which can help botanists decide if plants are getting sufficient moisture for ideal growing conditions. In colder climates, agriculturists use greenhouses to control environmental factors. In general, greenhouses should be kept between 26°C and 29°C and around 80% humidity. It is important to monitor these quantities, as cold plants can freeze and hot plants can wilt. Low humidity may prevent water absorption, and too much humidity can result in pests and pathogens growing on the plants. To ensure optimal growing conditions, greenhouse temperature and humidity meters can be made to measure these values.

Stomata Transpiration The process by which water evaporates through the stomata on the leaves.

Root Hair Hair-like extensions of root cells for the absorption of water and minerals from the soil.

When the humidity of the air is high, the air becomes saturated with water vapour. This reduces the rate of water evaporation through the stomata, which in turn decreases the rate of transpiration.

GETTING STARTED TECHNOLOGY IN FOCUS Locate your Raspberry Pi Pico with the pins face up and find the following ports: GND, 3V3, and GP16.

3V3 is a 3-volt power source. This port will supply power to your sensor.

GND is a ground pin, meaning it sends electricity back to the board, completing the circuit.

GND is a ground pin, meaning it sends electricity back to the board, completing the circuit.

GP16 is a general purpose pin. In the code, it will be set to “input” so it can read signals from the sensor. The Pico will then send the signals to your device through the USB cable.

Part 1: Print temperature and humidity values to the shell.

WIRE Step 1: Place the Raspberry Pi Pico facedown in the prototype shield on the left side. Make sure each pin inserts into its respective hole. The shield makes it easier to connect components.

Step 2: Find the S (signal) port on the sensor. Put the female end of the white wire onto the prong, and connect it to GP16.

Step 3: Find the V (voltage) port on the sensor.

Put the female end of the red wire onto the prong, and connect it to 3V3.

Step 4: Find the G (ground) port on the sensor. Put the female end of the black wire onto the prong, and connect it to GND. Note: There are several GND ports on the Pico. The sensor only needs to be connected to one of them.

This allows the Pico to ground multiple components at once.

Step 5: Plug the Pico into your device using the USB cable. If your device doesn’t have a USB port, you may need a USB-to-Lightning adapter.

CODE Step 1: Open Thonny.

Step 2: Click View -> Files in the top left corner.

Step 3: Navigate to Documents/Grade 9 Raspberry Pi Pico.

Projects/Projects/Project_1_Temperature_and_Humidity.py. “.py” is the Python extension used for all of our Pico programs.

Step 4: Select MicroPython (RP2040) in the bottom right-hand corner.

Step 5: Upload the libraries in the folder to your Pico by right-clicking on dht11.py and selecting “Upload to /”.

Repeat this for the lcd128_32.py and lcd128_32_fonts.py, as we will need them later to display the readings on the LCD.

Step 6: Click the “Run” button and read the temperature and humidity values printed to the shell. What happens if you change the number in time.sleep(_) and click “Run”?

Project 2 :

Predator Detector INTRODUCTION In the phenomenon known as natural selection, members of a species that survive longer are more likely to reproduce and pass on their traits. As a result, a species’ predominant DNA changes over time to favor characteristics that improve survival. Predators and both alike rely on avoiding detection in nature in order to survive, whether they are hunting or being hunted. A PIR (passive infrared) sensor, detects movement by measuring infrared light radiating in its environment. If a species can move or hide without triggering the sensor, it may have better chance of survival. An RGB (red-green-blue) LED, or light emitting diode, is an output that can be programmed to change color based on the energy detected by the motion sensor. Together, a PIR sensor and an RGB can be used to create a predator detector that signals whether a predator is likely nearby. This setup can help predict whether a predator is likely to sneak up on its prey undetected, or whether the prey is more skilled at avoiding detection and escaping predators.

CODE Step 1: Open Project_2a_Predator_Detector.py in Thonny. Ensure that RP2040 is selected in the lower-right corner.

Then, go to Tools Manage Packages, search for “picozero,” and install it on the Pico. This library is required for RGB LED control in Part 2.

Step 2: Click “Run” and wave your hand over the PIR motion detector. Does the built-in LED blink? Does the shell display “Motion Detected”? Find the parts in the code that cause these steps to happen.

Note: The sensor has a 2-3 second delay, so the response may not be immediate. If nothing happens, try clicking “Stop” and then “Run” again to reset the Pico. Then wave your hand over the sensor once more.

Step 3: Look at line 10 in the code. If there’s a # in front of the line, it’s a comment, meaning it doesn’t execute.

Delete the # to activate the command.

Click “Run” again.

Does the LED in the top-left corner of your Pico blink quickly when motion is detected?

Part 2: Program the RGB LED to change color based on PIR. WIRE Step 1: Identify the long leg of the RGB LED and place it into the GND pin on the top-left corner of your prototype shield. Insert the remaining three legs into GP1, GP2, and GP3, in order.

Step 2: Since GP2 is now used by the RGB LED, the PIR motion sensor must be moved.

CODE Step 1: Open Project_2b_Predator_Detector_RGB_LED.py in Thonny.

Step 2: Locate the function setColor(r, g, b) which sends values to control the red, green, and blue intensities of the LED. Now find the setColor() function in the pir_handler() function.

Predict what color the LED will change to when motion is detected. Run the code to verify your prediction.

Hint: Try setColor(0, 0, 255) to make it blue.

Step 3: Change the RGB values in the setColor() line within pir_handler() to make the LED turn blue when a predator is detected. Run your code to confirm the change.
